Located in Hintonburg, Strawberry Blonde Bakery is a vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free bakery that produces outstanding treats. Focusing on creating delicious food for the people with food allergies Strawberry Blonde Bakery excels at demonstrating you don't need to compromise taste in making vegan baked goods. For the past year I've become a fan of Strawberry Blonde Bakery, initially visiting to pick up vegan treats to share with friends and family, but later on, I continued to visit as I find their baked good just as delicious if not better than many other local bakeries.

I was actually on my way to another bakery when the bright turquoise storefront of Strawberry Blonde caught my eye. Located on the corner of Grange and Wellington, right beside the Bagel Company. The shop itself is really more of a wholesale/warehouse, but there is a display of their goods, and boy are they lovely! I was in the hunt for treats for a business owner seminar, and they did not disappoint. I'm always concerned about allergies and intolerances when hosting, and this place, being nut free and gluten free, takes the guesswork out of that - hurray!I decided to go with easily transportable treats that couldn't go bad sitting out for a bit. I chose some delicious cookies (ginger, mint chocolate, and chocolate chip). I really liked how moist and pretty they were, and they were all delicious. I also purchased a large pan of brownies which were super tasty. I would absolutely come back here when picking up baked goods for guests. The prices were reasonable as well. It would be nice if there was maybe a small table to sit at, but I know they're not really going for a cafe vibe here. It's a great spot to visit if you have an allergy, or if you have guests with one!

Great vegan chocolate bday cake! So rich!

I love this place; everything that I have had (cupcakes, muffins and brownies) has been absolutely delicious.

I really wish I'd gotten a photo of the little waiting area. They have all these colourful couches and lamps. It's like a little parlour. The spot is just so cozy. I even had to take a picture of the walls where the downstairs washrooms are located. They had gorgeous sunflowers painted all over them. The service is every bit as good as the food. The mimosas are worth it, lots of bubbles (some places really skimp, not Chesterfield's). They have many gluten-free options, which always makes me feel like I can eat like everyone else. I ordered the Bird's Nest Benny. The eggs were the most perfectly poached I've ever had at a restaurant. A side came with the benny, and I got the baked beans. The food was absolutely delicious. Potatoes, eggs, bacon, and maple-lime hollandaise that was to die for. There was so much food. Impossible to walk away hungry. Service was perfect as well. His name wasn't on the receipt, but he treated me like I was just as important as the group diners. No solo diner curse here. Cute spot, very clean, perfect service and food with quality ingredients. I will definitely stop in when I'm in Ottawa again.

They share a space with another resto who does dinner time. Line up and wait times can be disheartening, so plan to add your name to the list and take a walk around the area.

The Buffalo Mac & Cheese was the star of the meal, with its super generous portion, creamy sauce, pasta cooked to perfection, and crispy tofu on top. My grilled cheese was also delicious, although the tomato soup was scalding hot so I couldn't fully appreciate it after burning my taste buds with the first sip. My friend got the chipotle burger and fries, and was very pleased with her choice, in flavor, portion, and temperature. I was bummed that I didn't have room for dessert. The skillet cookie sounded worth it. Maybe next time!

That they had French onion soup was another plus. We arrived around 6:00 p.m. on a Tuesday and were shown to a table. We naturally ordered a bowl each of the soup, but I think we could have shared that and the Caesar salad (another dish I often order at vegan restaurants). I've had vegan onion soups I've liked better, but this was pretty good. For my entree, I ordered the risotto with king oyster mushroom "scallops," while my boyfriend got the gnocchi. The risotto was perfectly cooked, but I would have liked more mushroom scallops. The gnocchi was also pretty good, but not my favorite. If your French is rusty, fear not. The servers do speak English, and they do offer English menus (even if the website is primarily in French). If you're in Ottawa, it's worth a trip across the river.
