Streetwise Cycle School is great! I did the Basic Rider Course which cost $275 and was a two day course. I learned so much about motorcycles! My instructors were Bob and Mike. Both were extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and great coaches to get me comfortable and competent on the bike. They were both very respectful and considerate. The riding on the range was done very safely and in a way that all the students (small class too) were able to learn the techniques. The test at the end was very fair and I was amazed how well the whole class did based on what we looked like when we started. The classroom hours were a little boring but hey - its classroom hours... The whole experience was top notch start to stop. Also, the whole process was easy! Write after I registered I already had a question - I called Bob and he answered all my questions right then. Everything was made simple and done smoothly. Not to mention that they have some great connections if you are looking to purchase a bike after the class, they can get you a discount. ANYONE who is even curious about motorcycles should take this course at Streetwise Cycle. Streetwise cycle is awesome! My instructors were Suzan, Mike, and Ken. I signed up for the weekend class thinking that it would be a small class of 6 people but when i got there, it turns out to be a Full class of 12!. It was so nerve racking the first day..because i went there by myself..but as time pass..i got comfortable. but anyways, day 2 (sunday) of our lesson, we were out and about in the chilly weather with our motorcycles. The instructors are so nice..that, i cant stress it enough.. they make sure you get everything right and if u dont, youll get a chance at doing it again. Dont be afraid to ask questions and what not..they would not hesitate to answer them! overall..i had an amazing experience with them. If you are thinking about getting your motorcycle license, first, go to the RMV and get your permit now, and then take your classes at Streetwise. I had Bob, the owner, as my teacher, and he's great. The instruction was focused, interesting, professional, competent, and confidence-inspiring. The teacher (Bob) kept everyone engaged and interested. He provided excellent and personalized feedback throughout two days of mostly riding. He brought us, purposefully and deliberately, up through our skill levels. I went there as a no-nothing novice, and now I now how to ride a motorcycle (on a flat dry parking lot with no cars around--the rest is now up to me by practicing, practicing, practicing, by riding, riding, riding). There's a written, book-and-test component to the course. Don't worry about it. Just pay attention and follow along. Most of all, don't worry about the motorcycle time whatsoever. Bob steps you through everything you need to know. From the first exercise, which involves sitting on your bike and moving forward and backward about three inches (so your feet go heels-on-the-ground to flat-on-the-ground and back), to the final evaluation, which involves accelerating through curves and swerving around obstacles--you will always feel confident and in your comfort zone. The faculty pay close attention to the individual students and don't move forward until the class is ready. If you are thinking about it at all, just do it. Three hundred bucks now, for a new endorsement on your license which will give you a lifetime ability to ride, ride, and ride, is the best deal I could imagine. A couple of logistical pointers: From the moment you log on to the web site, and through the emails the school will send after you register, the school will give you clear, specific instructions on everything. Just follow them to the letter. The school has a zero-tolerance late policy. You will really appreciate that if your entire class has: done the introductory work; signed the safety waivers; put on all your gear; gotten out onto the asphalt with the engines running; and the teacher is just giving you instructions on the first exercise when some straggler shows up. It would be really counter-productive to have the entire class of conscientious customers wait while the teacher goes and gets out another motorcycle, sizes the guy for a helmet, gets another set of paperwork out of the office, etc, etc. So, BE ON TIME. You will be glad. Driving there from Boston is a pain in the ass. I went through JP, down South St, and Hyde Park Ave in morning traffic. Leave early. Set an early alarm! Get there early! (I highly recommend introducing yourself to the other students who show up. ) The school is reasonably close to public transit: the Readville stop of MBTA commuter rail is about a 25 minute walk away. Follow the frickin' instructions that you get in the mail! Each one of those instructions is meant to make your experience more positive. Take your lunch, and plenty of extra snacks and beverages (there is no food, not even soda or coffee anywhere near the school). Dress in layers. Make sure your gear fits the description in the instructions. Did I mention show up on time, and follow the instructions you get in the email? Those are the keys to success. It was an absolute blast. I took the rider education course, because I had dreams of being James Dean cool, riding around town on two wheels without a care in the world, but also real fears about my ability to keep a bike up. There is no better way to ruin your cool than for a rider to fall down, go boom, so I set aside a few days to learn from the guys who know. A deciding factor when choosing motorcycling schools was whether I could even get to it, but Streetwise offers a shuttle from Quincy Adams station on the red line. That settled it for me, and I was booked. I was also pleased to learn that the shuttle was just the owner, Bob in his Toyota Rav4. That offered a chance to have some off syllabus chatter with an experienced rider about choosing a bike, bike maintenance and other elements of this world of two wheeled adventures I planned to join. The actual course was several hours on bikes, several hours in the class room. Rich was my instructor, and he was just an overall enthused, and energetic guy the whole way through. It made mounting an unfamiliar, 300 pound beast that much more approachable with his friendly instruction. We started out knowing no more about bikes than where to sit, but the course, and instruction got us up, and motoring in no time at all. At the end of the experience we all felt fantastic. We had just spent two full days riding the dream out in the warm sun, chatting, and learning as we went from a ragtag group of wannabes who could not tell a clutch from a brake to throttling through corners, swerving around obstacles and U turning the days away like real riders. To put it all in perspective, we had only ridden about twenty total miles in a parking lot at a top speed of twenty miles per hour, but we were that much better prepared for the open road that bikers dream of. read more

This class was great. I have been tempted to start riding for years, but could never seem to be in the right place or find someone good to teach me. After returning from an extended trip to India, I was AMAZED by how much more of the country (theirs and ours) you can see with a motorcycle, and what an experience just riding in and of itself can be. So, as soon as I got home I signed up for Bob's class. First, my overall summary is that it was amazing, and anyone with little or no experience should do it. It's a great, efficient way to get your license and learn not just how to ride a motorcycle (any friend could teach you WHAT to do), but also why things are done, how to ride SAFELY, and how to be a good, reactive rider. Also, I need to say that all of the instructors were amazing, thoroughly helpful, and made sure that if you have the skills to get your license (most people will), you'll end up with it by the end of the course. Just like some of the other reviews...a good heads up: 1), leave an hour before you're supposed to be there if you're coming from Boston. Between either local roads or taking 93, it took me between 30 and 55 minutes to get there, so plan ahead, because you will be charged a $100 rescheduling fee if you come to the class late and they have to reassign you. This seems steep, but there's so much paperwork they have to keep track of (remember, they are doing all the work behind the scenes to track you and get your license for you) and class size is also extremely important, it's absolutely necessary. 2), sign up for a class at least two weeks in the future, so you have time to go get your motorcycle learner's permit from the DMV and can make sure to set aside two FULL days. Streetwise is fantastic! I was very happy with the beginner program. I felt like I learned a ton, both in the classroom and on the range. Bud led our class and was fantastic. He made it fun and relaxed, but always kept safety and responsibility top of mind. On the range he and Tom were very supportive and encouraging. I'm a short female with zero prior riding experience (beside bicycles) and I never felt unsafe or rushed, and I left the program feeling really well prepared to ride. Bob means business. This past weekend, my sister and I took the Intro course to Motorcycling. Building up to this point, we were kind of dreading it. We were scared and super nervous. We knew how to ride bikes but putting an engine in the middle, YIKES! We showed up minutes early and saw no one around, we were tempted to leave but we waited it out. So Sunday morning, we are up at 630am to head over to the Streetwise Cycle School. if you follow the emailed directions, it brings you right to the door, literally. Be sure to show up early, have your waiver form filled out, and all your gear on. if you should up late, Bob will tell you he will have to reschedule you for another class. The class focuses on making sure everyone is safe. if you don't feel safe, then Bob will have you sit out the rest of the class. This is great because you don't want to injure yourself or danger others. if he feels, you are not quite ready, he will tell you. The course itself is 4 hours long and you learn alot. Its alot of information at once but its all hands out. I was really nervous when we went straight out to the bikes. But honestly, this was the best way to learn. You start off real easy and then you are able to really ride. Its alot of fun and Bob sets up various obstacles and tracks, so you learn how to maneuver on your bike. One thing that annoyed me was that Bob told us that if we were having issues, to pull over and wave our hand and he would come help us. But in actuality, he would tell us what was wrong and we had to figure it out for ourselves. My problem was not being in the right gear and not ever having driven standard this was hard. I kept stalling and it was extremely frustrating. But in the end, I guess it was a good thing, he didn't tell me what was exactly wrong and that I learned to solve it myself. overall, in the course of 4 hours, you really learn how to ride and do turns on the bike, even if you are only riding in 2nd gear and going about 15 mph, it still feels "fast". If you want to further your knowledge, you can apply the hours to the full course which I think is a pretty neat offer. I am glad I did this and I recommend it to anyone who is interesting in learning even if you don't have a desire to get your license. read more

First thing first, instructors Rich and Mike are really nice, funny and energetic. The course consists total of 10 hours of ride and 5 hours of classroom; seems long, but actually isn't that much considering the fact that you learn something new every hour. I took the morning classes from 7 am to 3 pm, they have 10 minute breaks every 2 exercise and a lunch break at the middle, so you get a decent time to freshen up. I didn't have any motorcycle experience before, but 10 hours were solid knowledge for me. I was lucky to have a good weather for this weekend, but they teach on bad weather as well, so it could be viewed as an extreme weather training. Recommendations: - Wear the most comfortable pants, boots, sweatshirts/shirts, gloves and glasses/shades. You will ride a lot, so comfort is essential. - Bring food or snack and a drink with you, as you will get dehydrated and tired as the course goes on. There is a lunch break, but still consider to bring some additional sources of energy. - Try to pick a good bike at the beginning, as you will use it until the end of the course. I used red Honda Hawks(naked), and I was pleased with it. Everyone will have a driving test based on scores taken off/ gained (-), but it is relatively easy, since you practice exact same procedures before the test. Also there is a written test of 25 questions, pretty straightforward as well. Need to score at least 20 to pass. At the end you get completion card/ certificate that grants you discounts on motorcycle itself, insurance, gear etc from select stores. Like any class or program, the instructors can make or break what you grasp and leave with. Bob and Bud were great. Decided 2015 is the year I'm finally purchasing a bike. Before that happened, wanted to take a weekend class to see if I felt comfortable enough to get something. If not, I'd move onto something else and forget a bike. Did I pass, yes. Did I learn what I don't know, yes. Do I need lots of practice, yes. Talked with Bob last week and he mentioned there may be a class this weekend (just finished). Signed up for it and the weekend was great. Spent lots of time on the bike doing drills & repetitions along with additional time in the classroom. The class was smaller (7 people) with varying skills. Bob and Bud seemed completely natural and took the time to work with each of us to identify and correct bad habits and explain the correct way (and why). Safety, risk avoidance, emergency reactions, even the proper attire was discussed. They are also a wealth of information if you have questions about the type of bike you are thinking about and offered to talk on the phone about future bike questions. You can tell when people enjoy what they do and these guys helped all of us learn. I'll be back in march for the experienced riders course. read more

Bob is a patient and service oriented teacher who really does wish for his class to be valuable to his students. I happen to get a class of 12 or so riders, most of who were seeking their licenses. I already have my license but hadn't ridden other than sporadically in 15 years. For me, this was a refresher and I am really glad that I took the class. In our class, there were half of the students for whom English is a second language (one didn't speak at all). Bob and his daughter and the other instructor were patient and made the effort to demonstrate as many times as needed for those who who did not understand the instructions of a particular exercise or who are visual learners. I will be a better, safer and more mindful rider now. Exactly what I was looking for. I'd recommend whole heartedly. read more

This is a top notch establishment. Schools like this are also a necessity, I think, for beginning riders. The instructors were sharp and on the ball; they were tough but fair. My fellow students were serious about learning, and the atmosphere was solely about learning how to ride. No wasted time or goofing around here. I took the last class of 2009. I had to get up at 6am to be there at 7:30 and I hate the morning. But for the main season they have afternoon hours. I probably would have had more fun if I wasn't so tired. This class isn't for lazy types who want an automatic bike license. They make you learn and if you don't, you can fail. No one in my class did, but don't go into this all cocky. Street Wise is professional, engaging, fun, and requires focus and commitment from the students. But that's how it should be. Riding a bike is a big decision and this school supports making that choice with all the information a new rider needs. read more

Besides my love for riding (as a passenger) a GROUPON/LIVINGSOCIAL deal brought me to Streetwise for the Introduction of Riding class. This four hour class teaches the basics of riding: maintaining your balance, changing gears, turning, etc. i left that class feeling safe, confident, and excited that i learned something new, HOW TO RIDE!! VROOOOOM :) I received a friendly email from Streetwise about their Beginner's Riding Course which would include a classroom and road portion where you would ultimately get your motorcycle license. This 2 day course was great. and the lessons taught on the closed course were great. The team were amazing, and gave excellent feedback. I cannot say enough good things about this riding school. A group of us completed the Experienced Rider Course with two Streetwise Cycle School instructors this past weekend: 1-day workshop. We elected to spend 100% of our time "on the range" and didn't participate in the classroom session (so we didn't sit for the exam.) Our instructions were exceptionally knowledgeable and experienced. They were also exceptionally patient, safety conscious and persistently sharing group and 1:1 feedback throughout the day. We took several breaks as we worked through skills exercises. The entire day was a phenomenal learning experience and bargain, too. I highly recommend this school for any form of motorcycle training. They're definitely "rider first". read more

I just took the beginner's riding course this past weekend and walked away with my license, as a total novice. Bob and Tara, the instructors, were great and devoted tons of time to one-on-one coaching as well as group riding. An incredibly welcoming and fun course! They really made everyone feel at home on a bike and were very clear and insistent about teaching safe operation, while helping novices gain confidence about those initially scary things like leaning into a turn. Do dress warmly and bring lots of layers as well as a rain jacket. Class runs rain or shine, as my class learned the hard way with our first day out in the cold, pouring rain. Great instructors for the MSF experienced riders course. They were clear, friendly, helpful, and gave specific advice on form and technique. I only wish they'd offer more advanced courses (e.g. bike bonding courses patterned on motorcycle police training) for people who are comfortable riding, but really want an education and opportunity to deliberately practice skills beyond what they'd do day-to-day on the street. read more

A solid class for beginners. The curriculum covers the basics surprisingly quickly, and gives you the confidence to (cautiously) proceed into the world of riding. Ron was deeply-knowledgable, encouraging, patient, thoughtful and kind. An excellent instructor and a very cool Zen-and-the-Art-of-Motorcyle-Maintenance human being. About the other person I will say this: I'm a teacher & understand how frustrating it can be when students make mistakes. But overreacting to such mistakes, taking that frustration out on the students, demeaning & embarrassing them, is unkind, unhelpful and wildly unprofessional. It's also just bad teaching. (Not to mention carrying a grudge over two days is simply childish.) The teacher is the authority figure in a classroom, and with that authority comes the responsibility to manage situations with calm professionalism. Had a beginners lesson on a Motorcyle, 125cc Kawasaki - RED. Much fun had that morning and Bob was great. Spirited in his comments explaining and showing the activities for execution on the Cycle. I took the BRC1 class at Streetwise last October and then didn't ride until July of this year. Therefore, I took the BRC2 class as a refresher and to learn what skills I need to improve. FWIW, YouTube can be a good source for training information. However, what YouTube lacks is instant feedback on your technique from professional instructors. Without the personal feedback one is likely to develop bad habits that aren't easy to break. If you are a beginner, you should take the BRC1 class at Streetwise. If you have your own bike and haven't had any formal training, you owe it to yourself to take BRC2. Unless you are a MSF instructor, you're likely to learn something you didn't know. You'll also improve your skills and have fun doing it. read more

I had never been on a motorcycle in my life when i went here. The owner, his daughter tori, and the instructor whitey were all super nice! all 3 of them were extremely knowledgeable and really took their time to explain everything in great detail. I had to reschedule the class twice due to unforseen circumstancs and everyone was extremely helpful in helping me do that. As well as explain the excercises, tori actually demonstrated each excercise for us to watch so we knew exactly what we had to do. It was extremely organized and everything was planned out to a T. The lessons were fun and taught great lessons for being on the road. It was EXTREMELY HOT as the parking lot the course is on was in direct sunlight so we were in the sun for 6 hours straight but thy made sure to give us water breaks etc and whitey kept moral up by joking around and even just conversating with us. They were all extremely patient especially whitey he was everyones cheer leader getting super excited when people did things correctly and good and being understanding and gentle with us if we did it wrong and offering tips and pointers on how to correct the mistake. Over all it was a great experience the bikes were well maintained, they scored the final test fairly, they were very personable and friendly and although the heat was rough they still made it fun. I would suggest taking the class in early spring if you can when its a little cooler as the sun and heat was a lot, but other than the heat and sun everything else was PHENOMENAL! I would recommend this class and this place for anyone who wants to learn or even people who already know how and just want to brush up on some skills. read more

Because the educational framework is from the MSF, I imagine the schools are similar in content. Therefore it comes down the the instructors. The staff in Foxboro were awesome, and our class of 10 came a long way. I had never ridden a motorcycle before- the day my license came in the mail, I rented a Harley 883 from the dealer and rode 300 miles of backroads, highway, and city. Imagine learning on a 250cc in the parking lot, then pulling out onto Route 1 on a bike 3x larger. THE STEETWISE INSTRUCTORS GAVE ME THE TOOLS TO DO THAT! ps I'd advise all new riders rent some bikes before you buy- you'll learn alot about needs and comfort zone. I took the Experienced Rider Course last Monday and I got more than satisfied and happy with the classroom and riding range. That helped me a lot to improve the riding skills and learn new concepts / skills we were not aware before taking the course. The friendly atmosphere and respect it's brought to the course encourages everyone to better take advantage on it and helps us to easier learn the new skills. Communication, administrative processes, personal safety concerns, licensing process, everything was impeccable and I congratulate Bob and his team for such accomplishment. The instruction, inside and outside the classroom, was of high quality. I learned quite a bit. Both instructors seemed very knowledgeable. Bud (Bob) provided excellent constructive feedback and a lot of encouragement. I would take another course with him without a second thought. Since there is a lot to remember while learning to ride a motorcycle, I think feeling relaxed and attentive is key. Paul seemed like he was right on with many of his critiques; I thought most of them were valuable and helpful as I was learning to ride. His delivery and communication style, however, could have been much more positive. Paul's negativity slowed my ability to learned the material and made me uncomfortable asking questions. He said things like "How many times do I need to tell you....?" and "You should really reconsider riding a moped if you are distracted that easily." (Tone was negative and condescending towards this other student.) Another example: I was having a lot of difficulty shifting gears the first day, and I stalled the motorcycle a couple of times because of it. The second time it happened Paul said to me "We can't waste time with this. Start your bike." I understand Paul's frustration in teaching the course with limited time. I can't (with all my imagination) understand how assisting a new rider with shifting is a waste of time or how him yelling at me will help me start my bike. I really hope Paul takes a vacation or does whatever it takes to make his instruction more positive. It seems like he has a lot to offer the motorcycle community, if he can move forward with patience and encouragement. read more

I wanted to like Streetwise, but now I feel like I really need to share who doesn't need this class. Basically, if you have some experience and know how to study, prepare to be bored by the slow spoon feeding. I entered this class with the mindset of, if I learn one thing from this class that can save my life that I can't learn on my own, this will be worth it. Sadly, I walked away scratching hard to even find that one thing. Background: I had been riding motorcycles for a few weeks at this point. I knew how to start the bike, and felt countersteering before, but was no where close to being a master of the craft. I took the basic course because it was a way to avoid the RMV in getting my class M, would save on insurance, and everyone said to learn from the MSF. I've also been taught or have taught a few medical courses as well as some flight lessons on a variety of aircraft, so I have a few insights into the world of instruction. The class is split into two types of sessions, an on motorcycle skills session, and an in class segment where you read from a book. Let's start with the latter. The bookwork is an insult if you have ever studied before. The primary method our instructor used was 'point out the info that is relevant (or on the test), and have people take turns reading aloud'. In combination, he would divy up segments for class discussion so that we could 'share important tidbits we found with each other'. If I wanted to listen to other people read out loud, I would go back 5th grade. The information we were really told could be done in 1 hour just reading through the book. This would be the point where a good instructor could glue everything together, as a book can only teach you so much. However, when people asked questions, all they got was a restatement of the line they had just read out of the book. After that, there was a lot of belching out the same things to do, but nary an explanation of why. Part of me hopes this would be better with a different instructor. For example, the topic of countersteering was brought up once. For those that don't know, at higher speeds, the bicycle instinct of turn handlebars in the direction you want to go gets a little complicated and backwards. But instead of getting a warning that this might be counter intuitive, and what might be going on, all you get is 'press and lean'. Maybe good enough for some, but if you are like me and would swallow up an explanation of gyroscopic precession, this class is not for you. They specifically stay away from the detailed explanations because that would scare students away. So you just walk away with broad statements like 'never brake in corners', 'always stay in 1st while stopped', or 'Remember FINE-C' and no idea the reasoning behind them. Now, the live riding segment. If you've never handled a motorcycle before, you will get a lot of benefit from this. You get to learn what the fuel shutoff does, how to shift into neutral, and a healthy dose riding experience in a nicely laid out parking lot. If you have done any of this, tough luck. You get to stand in line, and wait for 5 people to take turns doing the same exercise before you get to do it maybe a total of 3 times yourself. If you are unlucky, it will be cold and raining, so the instructors will want to take long breaks to drag the class out. Having someone watch while you roll around can be useful. I think there was one exercise where I caught myself and needed to say, 'oh I forgot to straighten out on that stretch'. Roll up to the instructor, and then hear the exact statement was a good reinforcement. But that's about it. Everything else, I would have loved to tear the course cards away from our instructor, just to practice them in a parking lot of my choosing, training repetitions until I felt good. So if you want to jump into the world of motorcycles from zero, I could see this class as a good starter. If you've ever worked hard to learn something before, and have some experience riding, this class is not for you. The main bite is that you can get your motorcycle endorsement in this class, but will be bored. If there was a way to take a rally course and get a class M, I would have fully endorsed that. The instructors were knowledgeable and attentive as well as personable, and it was well worth the cost for the skillset I rode off with. I had an excellent experience with Streetwise Cycle School. The instructors were competent, experienced, and kind. They spent ample time to walk me through all of the moves and safety practices to make sure that I could properly handle the bike. The class was fun and I came away feeling competent with a motorcycle. A few weeks after receiving my license, I did a motorcycle adventure through the Himalayan mountains in India. This is a well-organized, pressure-free school that provides excellent instruction for the novice as well as experienced rider. The instructors (Bud and Rich) are phenomenal: at once enormously competent and approachable, they make it very clear that their first concern when they're on a bike or when you're on a bike is safety. They clearly want everyone to succeed, and take an approach that corrects mistakes by coaching you in a friendly way rather than by making you feel like an idiot or an incompetent rider. This shores up your confidence - which is helpful to have when on a bike - rather than wearing it down. After two days of their Basic Rider Course, I went from never having driven a motorcycle to passing my written test and driving evaluation. The only thing I need to do now to get my motorcycle license is to wait for it to arrive in the mail! I'd strongly recommend anyone who can ride a bike consider taking a Basic Rider Course, even if they have no interest in being a regular rider. It will make you a better driver in general, regardless of what type of vehicle you happen to be driving. read more

This place is the best!! I had great instructors who were incredibly patient and encouraging (I had no prior motorcycle experience - and have never driven a standard). The pace of the intro class is perfect and it was a perfect preparation for the test at the end of the class. Also, I'm only 5'1" and they have small bikes for tinier people so you can be safe and comfortable. Thank you so much Rich, Bud and Dale for being so wonderful!
