I really need to spend more time here, but I at least try to make my commitment to attend the weekly Tuesday evening Pilates class. The instructor is great; she kicks my butt every time. And as a result, my core muscles have improved greatly from my lethargic sedentary lifestyle of a few years ago. I also occasionally use the media room treadmill and watch movies on the huge screen. And the hot tub, sauna and steam room are great for a sore bod. I still have the gut to prove my love of food and beer. But I can carry it with pride knowing that there are some stronger muscles underneath that will help me keep moving into my 60s. The only time I haven't been a member was when I was away at college. I even worked for skills for a year. It's my favorite gym in the world, but with the new ownership things have really gone downhill. When I used to work at skills we cleaned the bathrooms every shift. Now I'd be surprised if they are cleaned once a week. The bathrooms are absolutely nasty. And with the new ownership they've switched to a system where someone is only manning the front desk for a few hours a day, meaning no towel service, no help with memberships, no movies in the cinema room. The cinema room has been turned into the spin studio meaning no more working out while watching a film. The yoga studio was torn down and made into some weird stretching space. Buttons on machines are broken and will go for months without being fixed. And forget using the hot tub or sauna -- they are always broken. The class schedule used to be packed during the morning and evening, now there's only one class offered during the evenings most nights. And while everything has changed, prices have gone up a few bucks -- which isn't a big deal, but I paid for what skills used to be. I used to love skills. It was a great local gym with the best amenities, equipment, and classes around. But it's turned into a sad shell of its former self. I've cancelled my membership and switched gyms. I hope they can turn skills around before it's too late.

There's quite a few of the same machine which means you'll always have access to whatever muscle group you're working on. Ide say about 30-40 treadmills, 20 ellipticals for cardio. Never seen anywhere close to half occupied. Anytime I've used the bathrooms they have always been very clean. The staff seem to really take care of the place and are on top of it. I usually go around 2-3pm or so, and Saturday nights if I'm not doing anything. Maybe 10-15 people. The gym is large enough to avoid crowding. Love Planet Fitness!

In Vegas I got a sense of clicks and a cool kids vibe. Here it's family Amd warmth. The Surrender class was led by Taylor. She was very good. She took us into a spiritual journey, accompanied by traditional yoga appropriate music that help spirit out life's noises Amd allowed me to clear my mind Amd be present and in the moment. The Vibe: Returning…read more Sometimes you return to a place... and realize you aren't returning at all. You're meeting the version of yourself that first learned how to breathe. Ritual has classes almost every hour. So I did what Ritual encourages: Show up. Carina welcomed me like an old friend. She opened my account. "You've practiced with us before." Suddenly... Chicago. The pandemic. Hundreds of classes. The place where breath first became movement. A home when the world didn't feel like one. I walked into class with gratitude. The Guide: Carina Cannon * Ritual Hot Yoga The room was exactly as I remembered. Warm. Dark. Candlelit. Every Ritual class begins the same way. A few quiet moments. A meditation. I chose Supported Fish Pose. A scented oil neck & shoulder massage. Then Carina offered our intention: Breathe in clarity. Breathe out self-doubt. She returned to those words throughout class. Then came the flow. If you've never practiced at Ritual, their sequencing is one of my favorite teaching systems. Core work first. Then a flow learned slowly. One side. Then the other. A little faster. Then both sides again... until you're moving almost entirely from memory while another Ritual yogi quietly keeps the rhythm from the front of the room. Everything happens to the beat of the music. Even the cueing. Breath in... cue. Breath out... cue. Over time, you learn one of yoga's greatest lessons: Breath leads. Movement follows. The staff went out of their way to make me feel at home, and comfortable as a "second time" beginner. My first class was the "yin" with Carina, which included sound bowls at the end... a very moving experience. I've been going regularly since December and already feel a difference in my body. Unlike the older Bikram classes with the same 26 poses in sequence each time (and I did get value from that at the time), each Ritual instructor puts their own imprint on the class, which adds freshness to each one, while preserving the Ritual signature experience. I was extremely nervous as an older student returning to yoga after a long layoff, but the instructors could not have been more encouraging, inclusive and supportive. There's something here for everyone, regardless of level. I can't recommend it highly enough. Try it! Or... buy a ten-day pass for someone you love.
