My favorite was the Bubble Waffle Sundae, while my bf is always a fan of the Peanut Butter & Jelly Milkshake. To be honest, despite being a Long Islander born and raised, I don't love the "Strong Island" saying. It doesn't cause me to suddenly have intense feelings of love for where I grew up and the place I live on (not in), but I will say that the saying does make me thing of some pretty tasty dessert. Enter Strong Island Ice Cream and the couple of enjoyable trips my wife and I took here. Located in Nesconset (not too far from my Ronkonkoma abode), Strong Island is nestled into a strip of stores with nothing in the interior that makes it any more desirable than the average ice cream parlor...other than its ice cream. You see their ice cream is all fresh and homemade which you don't get everywhere (despite what you might think). You can tell there's a little bit of love put into most flavors and owner Paul holds this down when you come into order. He's a relatively friendly guy who seems to enjoy what he does. For me, my enjoyment comes from eating the ice cream! My wife and I have taken two trips here a few weeks apart and both times we ordered a couple different flavors in cups to go. When mentioning flavors, it is rather impressive to see the amount of options available. Nothing is overly exotic (you're not gonna find some banana peanut butter cookie dough here), but the choices are still pretty vast. Our first trip, I got two scoops (Nutella and chocolate peanut butter) with hot fudge while my wife did two scoops as well with cookie dough and rainbow cookie being her choices. Out of the four flavors, three were rockin' with Nutella having that hazelnut taste, chocolate PB getting nutty, and rainbow cookie fully delivering the cookie goods. As for cookie dough, it was missing the titled item within its flavor (which my wife hoped there would be plenty of doughy pieces, yet there were not). Second trip, the lady went with Nutella while I switched over to fruity in getting black raspberry which hit the spot in creamy/fruity flavor. Yum. Overall, Strong Island Ice Cream definitely has the power to be a legit dessert spot on the island that it identifies with. Maybe a few flavors aren't perfect, but most will hit the spot and so will your experience here. So whether you're a born and raised Islander or just looking for a scoop of what you scream and I scream and we all scream, Strong Island is worth the after dinner trip. read more

Upon entering, there were customers seated and eating their ice cream. They greeted me and raved about the ice cream. Paulie allowed me to taste whatever I wanted before making my choice. I was happy that rum raisin was an available flavor. It's always hard for me to find. So I chose a two-scoop bowl with rum raisin and banana ice cream with hot fudge and whip cream ( hey, feed the need!). Every thing is homemade , the whip cream was nice creamy and thick, the ice cream creamy and yummy. Paulie informed me that the banana ice cream is only frozen bananas, had me fooled. After having dinner in Stony Brook, we wanted ice cream and the Google told us Strong Island Ice Cream was on the way home so off we went. The store is located in a large strip mall next to an interesting thrift store. We went in and of course it was busy on a July evening but the girl working the counter did not make us feel rushed as we asked for a few samples. I tried the rice krispie ice cream and was pretty impressed to find it had actual rice krispies in there! I had a waffle cone with rice krispies and cannoli ice cream. The add ins to the ice cream are top notch and really make the ice cream stand out. Well done. My husband got the min waffle sundae and the owner actually makes the waffle when you order the sundae. And, I saw some complaints about the owner's demeanor in some reviews. He was like a typical Long Islander. Totally cool but no bs. My husband did not want whipped cream on his sundae so he offered some hot fudge to "loosen it up" and not only did we know exactly what he meant, it was the right move. Some uber drivers were coming in and he was double checking to make sure they were not scammers which might be a momentary inconvience for the driver but it's his business so go for it. And, let's acknowledge this dude is making his OWN ICE CREAM. The flavors run the gamut from tradtional to experimental (ube ice cream okkk let's go) and I think it's terrific. Just wish it was closer to where I live but don't mind making a trip again. read more

We stumbled on this hole in the wall after a weekday sushi dinner a few doors down. The space seems bigger than necessary but soon the shop was full with over a dozen people. The choices are plentiful and you can see the equipment in the back used to make the ice cream. The owner is very friendly and took his time to offer us samples.
