I had a bad experience and wanted to share my story. I had gone to see Peter Rehl after a fall from my bicycle which had bruised my tailbone and was causing intermittent pain. Someone had suggested that perhaps a chiropractor might help. I scheduled an initial consultation. I was very concerned about my coccyx and explained that to Dr. Rehl. I told him my entire goal for chiropractic was getting back on my bike. After an initial consult, with a lot of talk that included terminology that I did not really understand and was not explained clearly in layman's language, he drew up a treatment plan costing in the thousands of dollars that was not covered by my insurance. I signed up for a 10-pack of services which was more economical than individual sessions and seemed like a good deal. Interestingly, he never ordered imaging on my tailbone, but instead requested a neck X-ray which he continued pressing me about, repeatedly stating he was concerned about my health. I never had any pain or gave a second thought to my neck before visiting Dr. Rehl. The only time I experienced any pain was after he cracked/adjusted my neck during a session (in hindsight, without asking for my consent, and without any discussion about the potential risks of this maneuver). When I wanted to discuss this, he became defensive right away. He also told me that because of the imaging that I would need to lengthen the treatment plan, if not, that my prognosis would be extremely dire- I think he told me that I might not be able to pick up a water bottle or something along those lines. At that point, I was getting a super sketchy feeling - this seemed like scare tactics to push his already pricey treatment plan. I ran the imaging by a PT friend (someone who actually cares about me on a personal level) as well my physician, and they told me that the imaging showed signs of cervical degeneration that were very typical of a person my age and that should not be a real cause of concern. Both told me that they thought Dr. Rehl was trying to scare me into paying for his services. My physician also warned me that chiropractic adjustments to the neck have the potential to be extremely dangerous. I researched this online and it's true. Yikes! After 10 sessions, I never saw any improvement in my tailbone pain, and I discontinued treatment. I read through some of the other Yelp reviews which reinforced my instincts (scroll down to read Bernie R. 2021) I encourage anyone reading this to get a second opinion and or/to try a session or two before committing to purchasing a 10-pack of services. Be skeptical about Dr. Rehl finding issues with parts of your body that are not causing you any pain and trying to frighten you into paying for work that is not in alignment with your own goals for treatment (vs his goal of maximizing the amount of money he can extract from you). Get a second opinion before investing any significant amount of $$$. This whole experience caused me a lot of emotional distress, missed work due to getting the unnecessary neck X-Rays (also completely out of pocket), as well as close to $1000 for nothing. There are so many chiropractors with better reviews and I just wish I would have researched more carefully before selecting Dr. Rehl. On a somewhat redeeming note, Dr. Rehl did refund my $$$ for an additional 10-pack of unused services and neck contraption when I requested it and when I expressed my dissatisfaction with the whole experience. Going forward, I would NEVER let a chiropractor adjust my neck even if I were experiencing pain (which I was not!!!). Look it up and you will see that there is no clinical research indicating its efficacy to treat anything, and it has the potential to cause strokes due to cervical artery dissection. I've seen several chiropractors and while I was happy enough with all of them, Dr. Rehl is in a different class. His approach is comprehensive. He starts with a neck x-ray to visualize your condition, and then he plans a course of treatment. His rates are very reasonable. We started with twice-a-week appointments and have now moved to the once-a-week phase. Rather than relying on his hands, Dr. Rehl uses a handheld device called an Activator, which shoots a low-force impact exactly where the doctor wants it. But Dr. Rehl also does soft-tissue adjustments as well in the ART style. I'm extremely pleased with the results. I noticed improvements almost immediately and after several months I obviously have less chronic back, shoulder and foot pain and increased range of motion. I hesitated to write this but I feel this is important enough to put it out there. A little under a year ago, I went to see Dr. Rehl. I was preparing for an ankle tendon replacement surgery and I was starting to get pain in my neck and shoulder that was so bad, I would wake up screaming. I thought that perhaps I had slept wrong. So I went to Structural when it was in San Leandro. Dr. Rehl examined me and ordered x-rays. I had a follow up with him in Oakland scheduled already. Well, I got the films before he did. I took one look and was shocked beyond belief. I could not, for the life of me, figure out how my head was staying attached to my shoulders. There was clear and ample evidence that something was seriously wrong. C-3,4,5,6, and 7 were all smashed together. The bone spurs were very apparent even to my eyes. My neck was all jacked up. I also had a follow up with my Rheumatologist a couple of days after my follow-up with Dr. Rehl. Dr. Rehl looked at the x-rays and outlined a treatment plan. He wanted to restore the bend in my neck and lengthen the spacing between the vertebrae. He set up a plan that included twice weekly visits, the use of a stretcher at home and he was clear that it would take at least year to achieve. He quoted me a price. It was steep and all out of pocket. I told Dr. Rehl that I would have to think about it. Then I showed the films to my Rheum. He was not at all pleased with what he saw so he sent me down the road to one of the best spinal surgeons on the West Coast, Dr. Qureshi at John Muir. I set up an appointment with Qureshi and I showed him the films. He was not happy either but since he is a conservative surgeon and will go P/T long before he cuts, he ordered an MRI. The MRI comes in and he freaks out. He calls me into his office and tells me, in no uncertain terms, that my neck is functionally broken and it has been that way since an accident in Hawaii while body surfing in 2014. He was extremely alarmed and he told me in no uncertain terms that with the damage that I had and the deterioration, if I had even a minor rear end collision or even if I fell, I would have permanent neurological deficits up to and including being a quadriplegic the rest of my life. He wanted to go in immediately to do an ACDF... and he wanted to fuse 3, 4, 5 and 6... which is UNHEARD OF!!!! They seldom do more than one and two is fairly rare. Three is unprecedented. This being the time when Covid was flaring last year, I was concerned that John Muir wouldn't allow the surgery. Qureshi told me that this was NOT elective and that it would go before a surgery committee at John Muir to assess. The panel of Docs who triaged my case freaked out also. I went in as soon as my ankle was healed and I wound up spending almost 18 days in the hospital. This was a serious, serious issue and surgery. It was a complete success... though by all the odds and statistics, one level should have failed to fuse. So, why am I giving Dr. Rehl this review? Here is why: 1) MRI: While two other Docs looked at the X-rays and were duly alarmed, they also needed to see the MRI to recommend immediate, emergency surgery. That was a piece that should have been ordered by Rehl as well. 2) MRI: This was serious enough based on the x-rays alone that my surgeon ordered the MRI during Covid and the surgery was green lit by the hospital. 3) Dr. Rehl should have noted the potential for serious and lasting damage. He should have referred me to a surgeon himself for further evaluation. He chose not to. I had shown these x-rays to another chiropractor and his response was that he wouldn't even consider touching that without an MRI and a Ortho's sign off. 4) Dr. Rehl was concerned about his business and not me. His course of action would have left me exposed to becoming a Quad and the pain would have never ended. Every physician I spoke with about this (and I am a Pharma rep so I talk to Docs all day long and I showed a bunch of them this) told me the same thing... damage like this to the cervical spine does NOT EVER get better without surgery. It simply gets worse. This is a thing that Dr. Rehl knows and his response was to RX a treatment that would have burned up a year, cost a small fortune, achieve nothing and expose me to further damage and risk. Folks, if you are reading this, understand that I sat on this since last September and mulled it over. After careful consideration, it is my opinion that Dr. Rehl is either: - Incompetent... or... - Concerned only with his own income. At the end of all this I simply urge you to double check everything he says, get a second opinion and know your risks. It was a tossup for me to write this or call my lawyer. I've been coming to Dr. Rehl for the last few months and I'm glad I have. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the human body and the correlation between muscle and spine. He's been super helpful with my back problems and the adjustments are spot on. The office is clean and easy to access (with parking). I rarely have to wait more than a couple minutes as he always honors his appointments! Really great experience and I'm glad I was introduced to Dr. Rehl. I've been on yelp 7 years and have written maybe 10 reviews. I'm not inclined to write 'em--it takes a lot to get me to sit down and craft one, so they are thoughtful and well-deserved. And it's only when it's to point folks towards a hidden jewel of a service provider. In a word, Structural Chiro qualifies for my shout out. I've found Dr. Rehl to be really compassionate. After trying urgent care and acupuncture for low back pain, I tried calling around on a Saturday morning and Dr. Rehl not only answered the phone himself, he did whatever juggling was necessary to get me in for treatment within the hour. Admittedly, I was a little fearful because my prior experience with chiropractic was "crank and jerk adjustments" which weren't so bad on my mid-back but terrifying when it was for my neck. Happily, I found this is NOT how things are done at Structural Chiro! Dr. Rehl uses a rigorous sequence to assess alignment, e.g., "please lay flat and let me measure, now shrug your shoulder a little and relax (remeasure), now lift the left shoulder towards the ceiling and relax (remeasure), now move your left hand to the headrest by your ear (remeasure)...." and so on. Only when he's certain about precisely where you need adjustment does he use a little tool that feels and sounds like a small castanet to direct just a little pressure just where you need it. And it works like gangbusters! Here's another element I really like: his practice is "boutique-y." 1) There's only 3 chairs in the reception area and they don't get used much. That's because it's not an assembly line. You do NOT wait 15 minutes for a receptionist to direct you to a treatment room where you wait 15 minutes for the doctor to appear (who is juggling treatment of 4 or 5 patients simultaneously). 2) Appointments start on time every time. 3) You get Dr. Rehl's undivided attention for 15 minutes and then you're on your way. I tore my right shoulder labrum and needed help. I worked with Dr. Rehl since December 2020. He was very thorough with what needed to be done, and what other treatments that I needed and recommended a Doctor of Physical Therapy to work in tandem with. For 6 months we worked on regaining my range of motion and fine tuning my unbalanced body. I would often come in feeling tight and in pain, with his help it quickly went away. I train martial arts regularly and often end up with subluxations all over, with some adjustments I would feel much better and ready to train again. I had posted a review 1/31/2018, and it is no longer showing.I am reposting my original review before posting an updated review. From 1/31/2018 Dr. Rehl is great! Neck pain gone and I can turn my head Dr. Rehl is great! I had never seen a chiropractor before Dr. Rehl. I woke up one morning with neck pain so extreme that I could not turn my head. I was taking 800 mg of ibuprofen every 4 hours to make it thru work, and even then it was a struggle. My friend recommended Dr. Rehl. With the first visit, my pain was reduced significantly - to a mild discomfort. And I could turn my head. Within a couple more visits, the pain was completely gone. Should any of my friends ever require chiropractic care, I definitely recommend Dr. Rehl. Since my original review in 2018, Dr. Rehl has assisted my recovery for several scenarios. I was having intense headaches every day. With Dr. Rehl's observation and direction, the root cause was identified as gluten and dairy sensitivities. After avoiding these foods for a couple weeks, my headaches went away. The sensitivities were later confirmed with bloodwork (Cyrex array). I had severely torn my hamstring and was on crutches for weeks. Another time, I had a badly sprained ankle (again on crutches) Both scenarios, Dr. Rehl assisted my getting back on the trails by keeping my hips and knees aligned during recovery. As far as routine spinal care, some chiropractors will crack the same 2 spots every visit. That isn't Dr. Rehl. came in to get help with my neck pain. had me sign some forms, but brushed me off when i asked about what insurance would cover. halfway through the visit (where he spent half the time trying to upsell) he casually mentioned that the initial exam wasn't covered by insurance, a mistake he made because he "forgot" to check in on my ID/kaiser card. As a physical therapist myself, I can highly recommend Dr. Rehl! His evaluation is much different from other Chiropractors that I have been to in the sense that he takes a full body approach which is imperative as the body is highly interconnected. His toolbox, with regards to the type of adjustments, is much more extensive than other Chiropractors I've been to in the past as well. Along with traditional Chiropractic adjustments, Peter also has extensive training in using a tool that produces the same outcomes of a traditional adjustment, but with much less force and isn't as intimidating when compared to traditional adjustment techniques. I just had the chance to go over my health insurance for 2018. To much of my surprise, Peter Rehl had billed my health insurance company for multiple "Office Visit," "physical therapy," "therapeutic activity," "Chiro Manip Nonspine," and "Chiro Manip Spine"... even though I went to his practice due to his brochure that clearly states "Examination Special $60 *Full Chiropractic Exam, Surface EMG, Neurological and Orthopedic Examination for $60." I even paid that $60 out on my own, not know that he will be billing my insurance company as well! What a fraud! I never agreed or signed off on the treatment so I will definitely be reporting this incident to my insurance company! I kept all the paperwork involved because I had a funny feeling about the entire ordeal. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Peter since April 2018. I met Dr. Peter at a local gym where "mini structural" exams were being demonstrated. After having the tense back, shoulder and neck rubbed out I scheduled a consult appointment the same day. I'm 65 years old and prior to treatment I was chronically sore, had a shoulder that ached a hip that popped when I walked, and stiff upon rising. I ignored the symptoms and discomfort and considered the aches and pain as part of the aging process. Plus, because I was not on any prescribed medications I thought I was "well". I cannot believe the difference chiropractic treatment has made in my life.
