I visited Stubbs at roughly the end of a 13 hour road trip (ok, there was one overnight 9 hours into that) from MA to NC. There was no way that I was going to have driven all the way to North Carolina without eating authentic eastern North Carolina barbecue. Stubbs totally fit the bill. It's in an entirely unassuming building that looks like it at one time might have been a house, but has clearly been home to the restaurant for many years. But whatever. You're not at Stubbs for the atmosphere (not that there's anything wrong with the ambiance...it's eastern Carolina roadside barbecue.). You're here for the food and in that sense, Stubbs does not disappoint. The pork was fresh, moist, and well-seasoned. Perfect. The sides were abundant and well prepared (slaw, greens, stewed beans, etc.). And the hushpuppies were sweet and crisp and not at all greasy. Plus, the staff - particularly the guy taking orders - were kind and accommodating (taking time to answer questions and explain things to my traveling companion who was not particularly schooled in the subtleties of regional barbecue varieties...which is a critical skill if one is going to navigate North Carolina's unique and sometimes contentious barbecue environment). Everyone here was having a good time and yet were taking care of the business of making and selling some of the best barbecue I've had regardless of style or location. I tried Stubbs for the first time. Purchased 1 pound of BBQ pork and a dozen hush puppies. Food quality was very good, BBQ chopped and tasty. Seemed to have a little tangy like they use apple cider vinegar in their cooking. Hush puppies crispy and moist with good flavors. Servers were helpful and friendly. Recently stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I had a delicious cheeseburger and homemade fries. My husband had a bbq sandwich with slaw. We also bought a pack of their fresh pork rinds. Everything was delicious. The interior of the building was extremely clean. This is a takeout restaurant but they do have picnic tables outside for you to use if you like. If you like the vinegar style bbq you will enjoy this place. I will definitely go back if I'm in the area. read more

Ate here recently on a trip to the area, what a great find. Nice little hole in the wall location right off the highway, easy to find, easy to park. Super friendly and fast service, very nice greeting as soon as the door is opened. Got the XL combo plate, it was a massive amount of food. Stick with the Large, it is plenty unless you want to take some home. Sides were all hot and fresh. This is Carolina so you have to eat like the Carolinians when there, it is a vinegar based sauce, they have a regular and a spicy. Not my favorite sauce but still good complement to the perfectly cooked pork. Amount of food for the price seems lopsided in customer's favor, only spent around 11 bucks for the XL and it really is two meals. Very good value and worth the extra miles to drive to this place. Star reduction for lack of meat variety options, only pulled pork available here - no sausage or brisket, etc. Could also use a little more smoke flavor to the meat, it was very tender and moist just lacked some good ol' smoke flavor. Sides are very generous portions, our favorites were the greens and the hush puppies. Also, super kid friendly menu which is a huge plus for us. Wow, first visit to this place and may go back again tomorrow, well worth the 40 minute round trip. My husband had the ribs, beautifully cooked, well sauced, and incredibly meaty and as a certified KC bbq judge, he appreciates good que. I had the shrimp plate with slaw and potato salad, all delicious and such a generous portion size that I enjoyed two meals out of one order. Not worth stopping at a place that is only open when they want to work. We stopped by a few minutes before closing time only to find them closed. By the way this was at 3pm in the afternoon on a Saturday. There were several others who came to the door and also got turned away. They opened at 11 am so they were open for a total of 4 hours. I visited today for a take-out lunch of a hotdog and vanilla milkshake. The food is usually good but today was a miss all the way around. Apparently the milkshake machine was not working (no problem, things happen) but I saw something I really dislike. The young lady working the machine suddenly stopped, licked her fingers, and looked right at me, surprised to catch my eyes. Then she pulled out a garbage can, cleaned up the counter with no gloves on, and then finished my milkshake. I shouldn't have accepted the milkshake but I did. We have lived in this area for 18 years and thought this was an ice cream parlor, finally realized it had food and it was wonderful until 2 weeks ago and then I think they had employee problems we ordered chicken strips fried okra and my husband brought my tea out the cup smelled so much like grease I had to open the car windows he ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and took 2 bites then threw it in the trash it was 2 pieces of bread that were soggy the other food was greasy I hope the problems are fixed we loved your food before.
