Smithfield Chicken 'N Barbecue is one of my favorite chains. Stopped at the Cliffdale Road location today in Fayetteville, NC. We ordered a small stew, a dozen hush puppies and 2 medium soft drinks. Should be a pretty quick experience. Nope, we had to pull up and wait after we paid. Best of all we didn't get our full dozen (got 6) of puppies but were certainly charged for a dozen. I was hoping for some good bbq. But I guess if they got a drive-thru you can forget about that. I was thinking great a place that has the convenience of a drive! This is great for moms or dads with little ones in the car. First off I hated the menu at the drive thru. But I did like that they had a second menu to look at before it got to your turn. Or your like me and didn't realize that was a second menu and was waiting for someone to talk and then realize it was an extra menu. I had no idea what I was looking at to order. Their bbq platter doesn't specify that it's pork. I had to ask. Their sides that come with the platter orders are so small. I paid about $20 for pulled pork with 2 sides and popcorn shrimp with 2 sides and hush puppies. I was not impressed. The fries were cold and small amount given. Their baked beans, potato salad and Brunswick stew were small portions. The popcorn shrimp wasn't crispy at all. I did like their hush puppies though. And they did not offer me any ketchup or bbq sauce for my fries and pork. I was a bit disappointed and will not be back. At least this location. I even purchased BBQ before I left even though she didn't resolve my issue. I do want to Thank Ms Helen and Jack for reaching out to me about my situation. While on 95 S I Googled (sorry Yelp) BBQ near me. I figure we are in NC so lets live a little! We also needed fuel I might add as we had many miles to go and thats how we found our way off 95 to Fayetteville. Nice little town. A bit sleepy or maybe it was the scorching heat. Seemed like nice folks live there. Was too chicken pardon the pun to try roadside BBQ or a diner so we opted for a fast food established Carolina chain that was clean, had plenty of seating, good reviews and was priced right. Nailed it at Smithfield. Not a HR as the pulled pork was just a shade off of the delicious scale IMO, didn't realize it came with cole slaw on it, and it doesnt come with BBQ sauce, still good though. Note Carolina BBQ is vinegar based and the meat is cooked with that in it so they dont give you more on top, if you want a rich spicy tomato based Q sauce this isn't the place. The fried chicken was excellent, really crispy and moist huge breast, the wing was a small non entity I should have asked for a thigh and paid an extra buck. I noticed they sell 10 thighs for $8. Thats an outstanding value that if I lived here would be a regular thing for me. French fries were very good hot n crispy and hush puppies were great too. I only ate two of them as I am on a diet...insert smiley emoji. Flat out this is quality fast food. When it comes to fried chicken I like most of the players but was weened on KFC and this is at least as good if not better. Lovely local girl was friendly enough to spend time with us just shooting the breeze as we asked her questions about the area such as what is there to do around here to which she replied nothin really just hanging out, 4 wheelin, muddin and hanging out. Could be worse I thought as an image of the Bronx tenements when we approached the George Washington bridge crossed my mind. All in all her charm and the good food made for a pleasant experience. I have been going to this establishment for years. However, the coleslaw I received yesterday was not up to their normal standard. It was the standard of bag slaw mix from Food Lion with coleslaw dressing. It had large chunks which is not bbq slaw. I don't even know how I even ended up here. I was yelping nearby places from my cousins. this place poped up and my cousin just took me here since it was along the way to Walmart. Since they got average 4 stars I said.. why not? hehehe I ordered the Fried Chicken (dark meat) platter which comes with cole slaw, potatoe salad, and something i didn't catch the waitress say. i substituted the cole slow with fries. the waitress was really easy going. The food actually came out really fast, she insisted that we just sit down and she'll us our food. I even offered to take it from her. :) Awesome hospitality.. At first when I looked at the food, it doesn't look that much and I was afraid that I would need to order more since I was pretty hungry. the platter gets you 2 pieces of chicken: a drumstick and a breast. I was in the area for the weekend visiting a friend and got a craving for barbecue.My friend suggested we try Smithfield's since we were just leaving the movies and it was pretty late and not far from her home. Upon arrival I noted that closing time was less than an a hour. I can honestly say that despite the late hour the staff greeted us with a smile and displayed true Southern Hospitality!! The restaurant was not crowded and was very neat and clean! We each decided to order the pulled pork sandwich combo (To Go)which comes with your choice of a side item and a drink. Some side orders are Baked Beans, French Fries, Potato Salad, Hush Puppies, Slaw plus more. I noted that the menu also offered Fried Chicken, Shrimp standard barbecue fare but with awesome prices. This is a very affordable eat out spot $7.12 for each meal!! The employee quickly took our orders. The lady was very pleasant! We were able to observe the employees in the kitchen area preparing our meals. The food was fresh and tasty with a Vinegar Based Sauce. which is infused in the meat. This type of barbecue sauce is common for the Carolina and Georgia region. I'm a Georgia girl who now resides in Virginia where they typically serve barbecue with that Kraft Barbecue type of sauce. This was truly a treat for me . There were only two downside that I noted which kept me from giving this restaurant 4 stars and they are : I ordered a side order of barbecue sauce to go with my order which I did not receive (Not Good At All) and that the restaurant offered desserts which sat on the counter. They were not eye-appealing!! Sarah Lee's pre-packaged Pecan Pie slices and what appeared to be small containers of banana pudding( YIKES) !!!! The restaurant needs a little TLC in the dessert area! It's unlike any other fast food or BBQ joint you'll ever visit! The staff welcomes you the second you walk through the door. They're all friendly and polite, they happily answer any questions you may have, and are constantly asking guests for refills and cleaning the eating area. The food is always warm and delicious, and the sweet tea is unbelievable. (You can buy it by the gallon as well!!!!) For those not from NC, Carolina BBQ has a vinegar base, and naturally comes with slaw on it, so keep this in mind when ordering. The hush puppies (or whatever they call them) are AMAZING!!! I actually went to the Smithfield's in Sanford, NC(and not this particular location), but I'll just leave my review for this one(so that other yelpers can see multiple reviews of this NC chain at once), since I stayed in Fayetteville for a few days last year. Anyway, I went to Smithfield's twice(review is obviously, for the Sanford location) on my trip to Fayetteville last Christmas, both on my way there, and on my way out from Fayetteville. Smithfield's, for those who don't know, is basically a chain located throughout eastern NC. They even have a few locations in the eastern part of the Raleigh-Durham area, plus one in the Wilmington, NC area. That info aside, my family(and relatives, since I ate here w/my uncle and aunt both times) got at least 2 orders(seemingly) of most of the menu(if not all of it). This place doesn't have a major menu, and pretty much sticks almost completely to the southern food basics, w/not much beyond that: chicken, bbq, sweet tea, hush puppies, etc. Anyway, I enjoyed the fried chicken, pulled pork(they smartly provided hamburger buns, so you can eat the pork as a sandwich), and coleslaw very much. The hush puppies were pretty decent too, but not the best ones I've ever eaten, however. And although they serve Sara Lee's banana pudding dessert(and don't make their own), I was surprised how good this was. In addition, they provide generous servings of whatever food you get(save for the banana pudding, since it was just in those typical small containers), so its nice that in essence, you have a bonus serving of food you can eat later on. Love the 50's-60s Hollywood decor throughout the whole place. And it's a nice bonus too(as I'm an occasional smoker), they even allow smoking in a back, enclosed room! But interestingly though, the smoking room is somewhat hidden and out of the way(not to mention I was dining w/my nonsmoking family both times), that I didn't even notice this until later while I was dining here, and admiring all the old decor throughout the rest of the restaurant. (note to smokers: you might need to ask the workers to give you an ashtray, since the 2nd time I was there, they didn't have the ashtrays out on the tables in the back room) Not to mention, the nonsmokers out there who may wanna dine in shouldn't worry, since there was a group of smokers eating at the same time as we were in the nonsmoking area, and the smoking room is seperated by both a full door and curtain(at least this is how it was in Sanford, not sure if all locations have this setup, and/or allow smoking). I also didn't smell any smoke at all, when I was eating. So props to Smithfield's for fully seperating both sections! Overall, this is a decent place to go to, if you wanna try some Carolina-style BBQ, fried chicken, and/or other southern staples(i.e. coleslaw). Not sure how they compare to local Carolina BBQ places, since this was the only BBQ place I went to on my trip. The drive-thru window is another nice touch, though we dined in both times. read more

My husband and I love coming to this location. The staff is very friendly and the food is, as expected to be, great. We always get the BBQ sandwich meals. When I want some good pulled pork I can't think of anywhere else to go! When u dine in, the staff comes by your table, serves your food, takes away trash and refill your drinks (the sweet tea never disappoints). It's is also very clean. Yes it's a chain, so it may not correspond to your idea of a hole in the wall BBQ joint. However, it feels more like the small local chain that hasn't lost touch with its roots yet. The interior is clean, well-decorated, and the service was friendly. In fact, someone even came to our table and made sure things were going well - a step above KFC or McDonalds. I'm not a local, so I can't comment on the authenticity of the BBQ, but I really enjoyed it.
