While sometimes better known as a music venue, their bbq is good and the service is great, especially given the recent staff shortages. 2 part review ------- The restaurant: soooo good! I'm a native Austinite and surprisingly had never been until recently. I ordered the brisket sandwich with beans and their creamed spinach. Y'all! That spinach was freaking amazing and the side dish portions are huge! The brisket was perfect and they serve it with the good pickles lol The bbq sauce was a little sweet for me, but wasn't bad. We also ordered the jalapeño poppers, they were so fresh and delicious. I ordered a Paloma and it was just ok, not sure if it was because the bartender was away, so our server made it? Overall, this is quality Texas bbq and I will go back & recommend to anyone! The venue: this is without a doubt one of my favorite concert venues! It's not huge, so I feel like there isn't a terrible spot, but would recommend getting there a little early to get the best spot - the right side of the stage, by the VIP stairs is the sweet spot!. The bars get crowded, but there are 3 or 4 of them and the lines go quick. The last show I went to they didn't allow bags larger than 4x4, which wasn't mentioned anywhere on the ticket or site, so had to run back to the car to leave my purse (which was a crossbody and follows the usual "small bag" policies) so that was annoying, but oh well. I used to have a craving for Stubbs' Serrano cheese spinach because it was the best bbq side I've ever had! I would get it as both of my sides. I would even take a three pack of it back home to San Antonio. This time I was very disappointed with the Serrano cheese spinach. It was missing something. I could not finish the second side of it. The ribs were good but the brisket was lacking. The fatty brisket needed more flavor. I received excellent customer service. I was let down by the food at Stubb's BBQ. Went to Stubbs for BBQ, for I use their marinade and sauces all the time. Eric was our server and he was friendly and attentive. We ordered Brisket and a Chopped Brisket sandwich. Our sides were fried okra, pinto beans, onion rings, coleslaw, and corn bread. I had 1 can of beer. Over all, for BBQ it was expensive, but probably not by Austin standards. The beer alone was $12 for a 16oz can. Total bill was $63.00. The cornbread was a very small slice and was an extra $3. The meat is lightly smoked, I prefer a bit more smoke. What makes this place is the BBQ sauce. Over all it was good but not memorable. You can get their marinade and sauce at the local grocery store. Another successful day of learning at TASSP Conference in Austin, Texas, and well I didn't want to drive the huge SUV I had, and BBQ was close to me so the front desk clerk sent me to Stubbs across the street from the hotel that I was staying at for the week. The restaurant is located on the corner, and you can park on the side streets, yet if it's busy, I see this as a problem for anyone. As you enter, you can see it's a beautiful BBQ bar motif very western. The restaurant has 2 floors and you can find the restrooms on the 1st floor. My server Dafne was very nice and helpful. Well, when I saw all you can eat, insert Homer Simpson voice and drule. "All you can eat.." THAT was the order. They offer you different cuts, but you choose 4 out 7 meats and 3 sides. Those 4 are the all you can eat only, not all 7. The food arrived quickly but made time to see the stage and other setups on the 1st floor. The brisket was dry, no bueno, and hard disappointed with that. The sausage was awesome with jalapeños. You can taste the rub on the ribs, and chicken was good. The okra rocked fresh to the table, and fries needed salt. The quality was good, and my inner Homer Simpson kept drooling while waiting for a crane to pick up my fat body from the chair. Pulled pork was dry and tasteless...had to saturate it in bbq sauce to make it palatable. Collard greens were with onions and bacon, maybe? but so watery and tasteless I couldn't finish it and that was after adding a ton of salt...since it was so tasteless, the salt I added barely made a dent. I believe they were over boiled. All flavor was gone. Coleslaw was fresh but watery...prolly sat in its dressing too long...it can easily be dressed to order to prevent that. Great old school vibe with the wooden floors, exposed brick and vintage photos. The local amber beer was tasty, but unfortunately, the buffalo wings were too sweet and needed more heat. We were invited to a pre-wedding dinner at Stubbs in their private room. I loved the brisket, ribs, potato salad, and biscuits. I find that slaw is a regional thing, and their slaw was vinegary and dry, while I like it tart and creamy -- just a difference in taste and preference. The bbq sauce was to die for. The pecan pie was very good. I took my meal on the veranda which overlooked the veranda on a cool night and it was lovely. I would highly recommend Stubbs if you're in Austin. Stubbs you did not disappoint! We ordered the brisket nachos as an appetizer along with some beer. The nachos were loaded with creamy queso, pickled jalapeños, beans and brisket. Absolutely delicious! I highly recommend ordering it. We then ordered the 2 meat plate with Mac n cheese and Serrano cheese spinach. WOW! The meat was so tender and tasty with a beautiful smoke ring on the brisket and the meat on the ribs were tender throughout. The Mac n cheese was creamy and had a fabulous taste to it. My friends really wanted some Texas barbecue, and of the options near our hotel, Stubbs looked like the most legit offering to me. We walked in and were seated pretty immediately. The place was distinctly Texan. I appreciated all the decorations, especially the boar head and the various music posters on the walls. I will say, if you like Texas barbecue, this certainly would fit the bill. We started with the potato skins, which were actually the most disappointing thing we had. They are totally fine except that the cheese is literally runny cheez wiz type sauce. It's not melted cheese or even thick cheez wiz. It was so runny that you could not pick up a potato skin and just eat it because the sauce would all run out everywhere. They had to be eaten with a fork and knife. Fortunately, from there, things improved. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which I recognize is not really a Texas barbecue go-to, but I just prefer it after seven years living in the Carolinas. It was fine, nothing special. The fried okra was completely on point and very tasty, and the mac and cheese was just what you'd want... large shell noodles swimming in cheese sauce. My friends both got the brisket and reported it was good. From what I could see, the bark was great, the smoke ring was really impressive and the meat appeared juicy. Visited Stubb's for a brunch concert with Honeymade and it was a fantastic experience! First off I want to say the staff here are rockstars and made everything so much easier. For this brunch there was a buffet with brisket, ribs, biscuits + gravy, migas, sausage, potato salad and more; My favorites were definitely the sausage, migas and potato salad. I will say that I am a huge fan of brisket and the cut I had today was a bit on the dry, bland side but I don't want that to take away from the fact that everything else on my plate was absolutely delicious! The cocktails and mimosas were banging and proportionate to their prices; I love the fact that they have fresh fruit in the mimosa! The food arrived on time and when we recieved our drinks, they came in this big red large cup. When I asked for a straw they informed to us that they don't have straws which I believed they had a good cause for not using straws however I like straws lol. It's not exceptional but it is better than average. Ditto on the sides. The beer selection is decent but not special. During our visit, the college crowd from nearby UTA dominated, which may explain the mainstream beer list. Stubb's is in the superficially rough Red River and Sixth Street section of Austin, which is hard-partying at night but calm by day. The sides might have been the stars of the meal in that the onion rings were perfect (large,crisp, not greasy) and the Serrano cheese spinach was thick with nice flavor as creamy spinaches go). For the meats, the spare ribs were the best by far. Falling off the bone and great flavor. The brisket was tender but maybe a little mushy and not as flavorful. The sausage was the best meat on the table and the rest was a bit dry for me. Found myself adding their barbecue sauce on the meats for some extra moisture. Cornbread was a bit small for a $3 up charge but tasted good. Their bread slices were super soft and the Mac and Cheese was good.
