I was so excited that a BBQ place popped up down the road from where I have lived most of my life…read morein Pansey. It is in between Pansey and Ashford in a field between the old Hwy 84 and the 4 lane. I have to admit, I was skeptical about Johnny B' Smokin' at first. I have visited many BBQ places and I'm getting good at determining what is pretty good and what is a disaster. Johnny B' Smokin', plus what I've heard from people I know, seemed like it was going to fall more on the disaster side. Part of that is because they serve seafood and I believe that if you do more than BBQ at a BBQ place, you cannot do BBQ and the other both right. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The place looks brand-new and is very clean. It has a screened porch (hey! that's a great idea for a porch at a restaurant!). I went with the Johnny's mixed combo that came with 2 ribs, pulled pork, and 2 sides. I chose potato salad and cole slaw. The ribs were ok at best. They seemed to be overdone on the outside and in the inside wasn't done enough. I won't get them again. However, the pulled pork was really, really good. It was prepared with the sauce mixed in, which added to the flavor. It was not tough or chewy, so my jaws did not receive a workout. I was really surprised at how good the pork was. There are 2 BBQ sauces. The BBQ sauce on the table is a mild-tangy-tomatoey-vinegar base. I had to ask for the hot sauce, which seems to be more ketchup based with pepper. It had some heat to it. I like some heat but I could not eat more than a bite of it in a row. Overall, the sauces were good, but nothing special. The potato salad was very smooth. It was mustard base, but not overpowering mustard taste. It had red bell peppers in it and it was chilled just right. It might have been the best part of the meal, as well as the slaw. The slaw was a mayo kind of slaw that was very creamy and was all sweet. You could tell the slaw and potato salad were homemade and fresh. Sweet tea not as sweet as I liked but was ok. Besides the ribs being a disappointment, everything else was really good. I have to say I like it better than some places in Dothan. Next time, I will stick with the pulled pork, slaw, and potato salad.

BBQ is a gem of the American countryside dining. Partially, because the only other alternative is…read moretypically fast food. But, that would not be a fair description of this tradition: BBQ is an incredible style of cooking and spots like this represent this tradition well. BBQ 65 is conveniently located right off the interstate in a gas station in a saloon like building that has a beautiful character from the outside. Open since 2010s, this spot has started to earn its place in the BBQ world, albeit being newer to it. There is an indoor seating inside near the gas station shop aisles. The ribs are cooked well with a nice wood profile, but neither very delicate nor particularly notable for their flavor of the meat itself, with smoke notes dominating. The quality of pork itself and the slightly tougher preparation could be better to rival Alabama's best. The BBQ sauce is loaded up with vinegar, completely overpowering the meat if consumed together, although to be fair, this may be a matter of preference for some BBQ lovers. The star of the show is potato salad which was perfectly balanced on its acidity, sweetness and overall flavor. As a whole, BBQ 65 is a pleasant stop to experience some traditional southern cooking and support a local business instead of tossing money into another "by the exit" fast food chain.
