My second time getting a haircut & style by Nguyet, the first time being 12 years ago while visiting family in Jersey City. Now that I've moved back to my hometown, I needed to find a new hairstylist. I tried a couple of other places but didn't feel the most confident coming out of the salons. Then I remembered coming here prior, urged by an old friend who raved about this salon to me. She said I'll feel like a Rockstar coming out of there. I finally found my stylist! I've been going to Cindy regularly for almost two years, and she has been consistently awesome. I've had a long struggle with finding stylists who will listen, and faced quite an extensive past of stylists who just cut off waaaay too much hair. Cindy always checks in about the length, and took the time to understand my fears. She also has a great understanding of what looks good on her clients, and has a wonderul sense of humor to boot! Parking is a little harder to find, but perusing the residential area you'll definitely find a spot. Be sure to call ahead as well~ read more

Came here last week for a haircut with Ken after being home all month with a newborn and wanting to feel and look good after being pregnant. Exactly the opposite happened. I asked for long layers and ONE inch off my ends. I came in with very long hair down to my butt. When I saw a lot of hair being cut, I assumed it was the layers. When my hair was dried, I was horrified to see my hair had been cut maybe 6 inches off the length and choppy looking layers. My hair is completely ruined and years of growing it out are gone. I actually started crying when I saw it and told him I hated it, and he literally had no response and just started working on another client. I had to pay for a haircut that I hated and didn't receive any acknowledgment. I don't understand how this place has such good reviews. I would never recommend this salon to anyone. read more

I came here for a hair cut because my ends were so damaged and Anna was the one who took care of me . She is the absolute best there is !!! She has a customer for life!!!! She didn't pull and tug at my hair at all and also was able to have it come out healthy and shiny without using serums in it!! I'm telling you Anna is the BEST!!!! You must try her out! Called around 5:20pm today (January 3, 2019) to see if I can do a walk-in and was told that around 6pm they would be able to cut my hair. Cool. Waited for 40 mins in my car, parked right outside their salon only to be told by 3 people that they are close and they won't be taking anyone else. What a waste of time, I could have went somewhere else!!! Word of advice. Mainstream the message so that people are not inconvenienced. read more

Today was my first time at the Salon and I have finally found the perfect place! I've gone to shops in Soho, Short Hills and everyplace in between, but nobody has ever done well with my thick, wavy, coarse hair! My friend...who has a perfect, precise cut goes to Ken...so he is now my hairdresser too! I took a picture of the cut I liked, and told him not too short" and I quickly got my best haircut ever!!! Nice Salon with no drama or endless gossip, etc !!! Easy walk from downtown JC, and so reasonable I thought there was a mistake !! Salon 17 is a GEM !! June 23, 2017 My second visit today. Loved the cut Ken did for me a few weeks ago and today I tried him for Color ...he's an artist...I agreed to his recommendation to "brighten up the base" and I love it ! This shop runs like clockwork...it's very impressive. . And very reasonable ...especially compared to any other Salon near and far. This place is the most ridiculous place I ever visited. I made an appointment online, and I come in 10 min late because of the traffic. And they said they cannot do the haircut for me, because I am late for 10 mins. And she needs to do the hair service for another lady customer. It was so obvious that they wanted to earn more money from another customer and just cancel my appointment after I show up. And they blamed on me because I am late for 10 mins. Do they only plan to spent 10 mins for my haircut? Don't go this place! read more

Terrible Salon, especially Ken! wanted Platinum highlights with dark base even showed him a picture. He did what he wanted to do I got beige highlights and I asked him 3 times to do my base and he refused said I didn't need it, finally when he finally did it was blond base. He had his wife help him and she is more clueless than him she doesn't know what she's doing I dont think she has a license. owner is his brother in law so he doesn't care as long as you pay. then when I was paying Ken waited by the register afraid he was going to get stiffed. I have been going to Studio 17 for highlights for about 11 years now. Nguyet (pronounced like "wen") is amazing. I have very dark brown hair and the blonde highlights look great. She takes her time and knows her craft well. If you need highlights she is definitely the go to person! read more

I waited for so long to get a haircut because neither I knew anyone nor I had awish to experiment on my hair. Moms club from the area told me that Ken is a magician who creates beauty. So I went there and loved the way my hair looked! Made an appointment for Ken week before, came in and waited 0 minutes (really no waiting!!) They washed my hair and Ken cut it to perfection just the way I described, his wife blow dried and styled it giving my hair finished look. GORGEOUS! Ken, Ana, Cindy and other girls who work there are great! P.S. they do accept credit cards, but can not add in tips to the total charge. Tipping Cash only. They have an ATM machine inside the salon too :) read more

Been going here for 2 years, originally because I lived on the block, but kept returning after I moved because of the good service. I usually have my hair cut by Nguyen, but did go to Anna a few times when Nguyen was away. Both are great! Good at their jobs and very friendly. A men's cut is $25 which includes shampoo, rinse after if needed, and any product you want in your hair. Not a fancy place, but clean and modern. And I can usually call the day before or of for an appointment, and Nguyen always accommodates me, which I appreciate. Only inconvenience is that you can't tip with card, but that's pretty understandable, but make sure you have cash to tip. read more

The salon caters mainly to asian clients and hair but anyone can pay a visit. I have naturally curly hair but wear it straight or wavy. I had enjoyed my experience up to April this year when Ken botched my highlights. Otherwise, I would have rated them 5 stars. I went in to get halo golden highlight touchup on the 2-3 inches of roots. I was mortified when he took the towel off to reveal WHITE highlights. Yes, my hair was stripped bare to show the white! The staff tried to convince me to keep it. Um, no I refuse to walk around like a freak. So, then he put a toner to make it golden. After the toner, it was the color it should be. BUT then, another problem revealed itself! He did not highlight the entire hair shaft! WTH! so I was left with a centimeter dark spot near the middle of all the highlighted strands. I didnt feel like sitting there for another 2.5 hours to fix this, so I paid and left, and havent been back since. Thankfully the rest of my hair is brown, so you cant notice it unless you are staring at my hair close-up. As for cuts, Ken is great at cuts. But if you dont have a full hair of head, do NOT go to him. He gets scissor happy and "texturizes" to the point of thinning. If you have thinning to medium hair, heed my warning. Thankfully I have lots of hair, so my cuts always look good. One problem is that he doesnt listen. If I tell him to trim the ends, he "texturizes" 2 inches off. Ugh! The other female stylists do great work from what Ive seen. If I get over my bad experience, I may try the girls instead next time. As for prices, they are a bit up there given the neighborhood. Highlights and a blowout cost me $180. read more

After many bad haircuts, I found Win (co-owner) and has been cutting my hair since 94. Her and her brother Ken have taken turns cutting my hair. I've colored, highlighted, ombre and have gone long, short and in between all with amazing New York style results for a fraction of the price. Win can transform any photo I show her into an incredible workable version according to the type of hair you have. At times when I just wanted her to take charge she's done it and it still comes out fresh and unique. If my years of loyalty to this place is not enough to convince you, try it for yourself. He listened to me and spoke to me as a concerned consultant. 2.The price was reasonable, compared to new york's salons. 3. I have thick chewbacca asian hair.. he corrected my color, and thinned it. If you have thick, rough, dark, over-colored asian hair, come to him. I look 10 years younger after his spirit scissors magic. 4. My go-to hairsalon. I obviously see Ken. He is extremely talented at what he does and will make sure you look great when you walk out. Ken does get scissor happy and will comment on the condition of your hair as if he lacks a filter aka he will let you know! but whatever, the man can do his job so I'm not mad. He doesn't listen much so if you need a trim don't go here. Come here when you need a real haircut. You won't regret it. Prices are reasonable for the job ($50) wash cut & straightening. read more

Went in on a Thursday afternoon hoping to leave with a hair cut. The lady at the desk, Anna, offered to take me right away but that she had an appointment coming in so she would have to pause in between to take care of that client. Very understandable but I decided to just make an appointment for the next day. Another stylist, Cindy, came out and wrote down my appointment for me in the book. The next day, I came in for my appointment. They took me at the exact time my appointment was set. No unnecessary waiting. Cindy was my hair stylist who was able to remember my name and made very good conversation. A storm was coming in the last 20 min of my seating therefore Cindy asked if I had an umbrella. I didn't and she very kindly gave me an extra so my hair would not be ruined. I will definitely be coming back and im so glad I finally found a salon that actually satisfied my liking for my hair! Wen's great. I've been to this salon since it was in the old location. For ten years I've been going to her for my haircuts. I have not found anyone else closer to where I live who can come close to Wen's quality of haircut so I drive a long way but it's totally worth it. My hair falls really nicely after each wash and I do not have to style it too much. Wen's attention to detail of how the hair naturally falls thus minimizing the time it needs to style it each morning is my favorite feature of her technique. read more

They cater to the simplest and to the most "fun" "cool" "edgy" "futuristic" styles you name it! They are all artist in their own way. Ken is my go to guy and my now hairstylist, a true gem, and a perfectionist. When it comes to my hair, I do not play with it. Tip: if you are first timer bring a picture and show them. Used thinning scissors on my CURLY hair and ruined it. Ken did NOT ask for my permission and went ahead and did it. My curls are now extremely frizzy and undefined. My hair used to be thick and beautiful. They do not know how to cut curly hair because and it is painfully obvious that they cannot cut hair that isn't pin straight. read more

Go to Ken!!! He's been my guy for awhile now. He never disappoints. He's personable and really is great at what he does. I've gotten my hair cut and hair dyed from him and I've always gotten compliments. I have really thick hair and he does a great job at thinning it out. He's very thorough and meticulous and you can tell he takes his time. The place is trendy and chic. You can't go wrong with the price for its location either. I paid $60 for a cut including gratuity. I like it, but I don't love it. I got a cut here for the first time about 3 months ago. Unfortunately I cannot recall the stylist's name, but she gave a solid cut. I asked for a trim, I got one, and I liked it well enough. My only complaint is that when the cut was over, the stylist blow dried my hair, and when it wasn't getting perfectly straight, she flat ironed it. I dunno, that's my M.O. when I want straight hair, but I'm not a professional. When I go to the salon, I expect a quality blowout. But like I said, I liked the cut well enough, and I'd probably go back as their prices are a little more reasonable than a lot of other places in the area. Anna is awesome. She gives good cuts and styles for both ladies and men. Plus she's sweet and fun to sit with for 20 or 30 minutes. The price is right too. I visited Studio 17 at Newark Ave to have straightening done. My treatment was done by Ken and another stylist whose name I'm unable to recall now but it was a three letters word. *my bad* Both of them were very good at doing what they were doing. When I asked the female stylist of suggesting a hair cut, she very sweetly suggested me to not cut the length. I insisted her 2 times more and she still said the same thing. But I'm only glad she suggested against what I wanted. My treatment turned out to be well but not what I had expected because my hair from the ends still have the curls and turns but I didn't call up and complain Ken or anyone because I'm satisfied with the result. I had heard good things about Studio 17 and had to go downtown today so I stopped in for a badly needed cut on my way back home. I was a walk-in with no appointment, so I had to wait about 45 minutes, but that's what you get when you don't have an appointment, lol. I would have made one except I couldn't remember the name of this place for the life of me. I just remembered approximately where it was and that a couple of people had told me they were pretty good here. It began with a misunderstanding at the desk; I said I needed a cut and asked if they had someone there who can work with people with hair loss (I have a spot on my scalp with very thin hair and need someone with the expertise level to deal with this, as in someone who can cut hair to accentuate the other parts and disguise that part) which managed to get repeated to another staff member as I was looking for something to treat hair loss - I was told that they had no one who could do this and I should probably use a special shampoo or something. Well, from the work I was seeing two or three of the stylists doing, it sure looked like they really knew their stuff so I re-explained myself to a third person. The desk girl was very nice, but seriously, I should have to go through three people to get matched with a stylist who can work with someone with a problem spot??? Anyway, I was matched with Cindy, who was fabulous. I told her what steps I usually take on my own, how short I was willing to go and all that. She suggested a cut and demonstrated what and where she was going to cut and the effect she expected it to have. I could really tell she knew what she was doing and felt completely comfortable with her. I didn't feel self-conscious at all. The cut was a bit more mod than my usual styles, but it looks great, is manageable and is something that I can recreate myself at home. Cindy demonstrated for me. I'm really happy with the job Cindy did. Like someone else mentioned, she has a really great attitude and vibe. The price was neighborhood price, not NYC price. $45 for a wash, cut and blow dry.
