Where do I begin, Studio 99 was worth the 50min drive. Melissa has a warm and inviting atmosphere and she possesses the same spirit. My hair from start to finish is on point! Melissa pays attention to detail, and did exactly what I asked her too. She took my raggedy weave down (prev done by someone else) and installed my new one with skill, precision, and craft!! I was happy to see that its walking distance from BART and is open late so I can come after work. The environment is clean and professional. The service is great! I was in and out with a take down weave, wash, condition, blow dry, and FULL SET curly weave in 3 and a half hours! Usually it takes people 5 because I have a lot of hair! I would recommend her to anyone who is apprehensive about getting a weave (she talks you through the whole process) and wants a friendly, quiet, relaxing place. It's a sad truth that most women of color who frequent black salons understand: When it comes to rating the quality of the experience one must lower the bar, because in general the standards just aren't that high. This is due to a variety of factors, but the following are what I expect at a minimum: Courteous and respectful communication with me (not talking negatively about other clients and former stylists is asking entirely too much), quality work, respect for my time and the environment free of mildew, rodents etc..... After repeated frustration with a previous stylists' workmanship, I set out to find a new stylist and from the yelp reviews, Studio 99 Weaves seemed to be a great choice. I will preface this review by stating that there were strong warning signs from the beginning, but I chose to ignore them due to the great work that she seemed to be doing. I will also say that you get what you pay for. A business named "Studio 99 weaves" is a clear indication of what you are getting. In any event after several unanswered phone calls, full VM's and unanswered texts I decided to drive over and make an appointment in person. I arrived and it had all of the makings of a hood salon: inappropriately loud music, marginally clean environment, personal refrigerator with non-complimentary beverages and snacks labeled with a makeshift price list, no receptionist and no greeting from the owner, Melissa, who looked up when I walked in and immediately looked back down at her client's hair. I apologized for the interruption and let her know I was trying to make an appointment to have my hair done. She promised to text me back that night -which she did and the following 2 appointments went down the exact same way. As a person, she was nice to me and I even drove her to the BART station so that she didn't have to walk through as she put it "ghetto Oakland", insert irony here. The first two appointments my hair looked great! So good that it was worth suffering through her gossip about former stylists trying to ruin her on social media, why she hates yelp, other salons being envious and accusing her of stealing their clients, clients not paying on time, etc. She even attempted to get me to out my former stylist by naming them because she thought the work was poor, but I refused to do so.... She was also adamant that the reason she has so many clients is because she does flawless work and and she works quickly out of respect for her client's time. The wait time to even sit in her chair had averaged at least 30 minutes in my experience with her, but it was something I accommodated. The third time I visited, however, my closure opened within 3 days while I was performing in Brasil and there was nothing I could do about it. When I returned, I texted her what happened and she was not able to get me in. There were several attempts to contact her and her response varied between ignoring me altogether to spotty at best. It wasn't until I finally asked her if her client load was too high to accommodate because I could find another shop, that she responded with an appointment for me the following week. At noon, the day of my appointment, I receive a text from her asking if I could come in at 4 instead of 2:30, my scheduled time. I told her I could not as I had things to do that evening and asked if we could reschedule for the following day to which she replied "no". When I asked what other times she had available, I received no response. The following day I sent her a text letting her know that it was clear that she did not want me as a client as she made no attempts to remedy a situation in which she was not able to meet our scheduled appointment in a reasonable amount of time nor did she apologize - customer service 101. Now why I thought an owner who runs her business the way that she does would resonate with that is beyond me. Her response (which was the quickest response I've ever had from her) was exactly what one would expect based what we are dealing with here: a long text rant about how busy she is with her clients, not needing to apologize because by not agreeing to come in at 4 it was actually I who cancelled the appointment and suggested I find another salon that can cater to my demands and needs. She's right, I did need to find another salon because I won't tolerate paying for service like that. Assuming it would be ok to push my appointment back 1.5 hours may have been insignificant to her but for a busy professional it is a big deal and I won't have it wasted. I've lowered the bar so low when it comes to black salons that my threshold for nonsense is pretty low as well. I really tried here, because I want to support small black owned businesses especially in Oakland and I also understand that for many of these salon owners they are not used to a true quality experience and therefore don't know how to provide that service to their clients. The Oakland business market is changing, step it up!!! read more

This might be a very long review and I apologize in advance. However I feel it is necessary to inform potential clients that this business is unprofessional and a waste of your hard earned time and money. I have been looking for a reputable black hair salon in my area for years now. It wasn't until I saw this business's yelp page and thought my search was over. I tried calling the owner to request an appointment but was never able to get through. I first text Melissa on Friday June 5th. I got a quick response about the price for a vixen sow in, however when I asked to schedule an appointment it took some time to get a response back from her. I text her again asking if Friday June 19th was available. I didn't get a response back until June 13th. That's when we set up the appointment and confirmed it as well. Unluckily for me, this was the day that the Golden State Warriors had a parade for winning the NBA championship. Of course I would never book an appointment when something this big is going on in town, but I booked my appointment prior to knowing this. Keep this is mind because it only gets "better" from here. I arrived in Oakland around 1030. Mind you I live in modesto and I wanted to beat any possible traffic. Took me a while to actually find the shop. It's nestled on a street corner that looks like townhouses instead of a business community. After finding this tiny little shop, I parked my car in the nearby parking garage. (Which is not free and because there was no available street parking) That was a red flag in itself. For a business you should always have free parking for paying clients. But I chalked it up to the parade so I let it slide. My appointment want until 12 noon so I waited in my car for about 50 mins before walking a block to the shop. I got to the shop doors around 1130 and saw two women sitting on the steps. I tried walking past them to open the door but one of the women spoke out and said she was a stylist there but had left her keys in her station so the store was locked. Really? She said we would have to wait until someone else from the shop came back from the parade and opened the doors. We waited about 20 minutes and I believe it was Melissa's assistant who opened the shop for us. Fortunately she was very kind and very courteous. She asked for my name, appt time and if I had washed my hair. I replied yes I washed my hair already because I was unsure if that would be an extra charge to installing the weave. So she prepped Melissa's station and I waited, and waited, and waited. After about an hour the assistant informed me that Melissa was on her way and would be here shortly. Another 3o mins go by and finally Melissa shows up. She says she was unaware that she had an appointment scheduled with me today because she was just "doing nothing but sitting and watching the parade". I was floored. I booked and confirmed this appointment a week in advance!!! I showed her our text conversation and she apologized and started to get to work. I wanted the vixen sow-in weave because of its versatility as I have to wear my hair up for my job. Things were off to a good start until a 1 1/2 hours or so later and I realized she was finished. I looked in the mirror and thought "that's it?" It looked nothing like how I'd imagined or from the pictures on her page. I like my hair full but this install was extremely thin and messy. She used maybe a bundle and a half and I had brought 4! I could tell she was rushing because she didn't style it, curl it, show me the different ways to wear it or nothing. Also because her next client had walked in too. I was very upset. I'm not the type of person to express how bad of a service I received, especially for hair. I just won't come back to you ever again. She gave me a discount of $25 for wasting my time and her tardiness. I ended up giving her a $15 tip anyways out of the generosity of my heart. I should have included a tip on how to properly conduct a business. I really want to support black owned businesses but when you conduct yourself in a manner like this, come 2 hours late, have horrible customer service, and rush and leave my hair looking a mess because of your negligence, I can't do nothing but pray for you and hope you do better. Not once did I get angry, hostile or act rude towards her. So I don't understand why I had such a bad experience. In the end, I ended up adding additional tracks in my hair and will do my hair from now on. Please don't waste your time with this place. A little disappointed, I went here to get a vixen sew which costed $175 because I wanted some of my hair left out and all off it "including the weave "flat ironed. So since I do wear pony tails the lady that did my hair decided to do a partial vixen. She left to much of my hair out, that was the point of me getting a weave for a protective style smh... The way she sewed it in looks like I have two big lumps at the top of my head. Now I have to go and add some damn extras in the front, I'm pissed because I work hard for my money, and I don't have money to just waste. I will say Melissa is a star. She works her behind off and her work looks flawless. She is fast and efficient, bust she is doing a disservice to herself for having a mediocre stylist in her salon. The salon is in an area that has the potential to bring her in business that would make her some $$$ and very sought after. The shop is unkept. Cleaning it up and making it more appealing would make it THAT salon. Sharae is not worthy of working in that salon yet. I had crochet braids done by Sharae in this salon. They are unprofessional talking about clients. SHARAE HAS NOT BEEN TO BEAUTY SCHOOL AND IS NOT LICENSED, something that was hinted at by the questions she asked and I found out later. I'm considering turning her and the salon into the state. She used combs that were not sanitized, scissors that liked like something a kindergarten student would use to cut my hair and I ended up have to cut my own hair before Melissa took over. In addition Sharae attempted to take hair off of the FLOOR to fill in gaps in my hair. Not sanitary or cool. My crochet braids begin to slide out about a week later, the first falling out in the front and into my face while I was driving on 580 in rush hour traffic. NOT SAFE. After that it was just down hill from there. The braids in the back started coming down and popping out through the crocheted braids and I had to bobby pin them up. Needed to say I kept them in 3 weeks. That was $140 I have to her as a gift. Shame on her. read more

My last visit I brought in a picture of how I wanted my hair done with about 5 bundles of hair she used ONE my hair was so thin she rushed, if she would have taken her time my hair would have looked like the picture. Upon arriving late she also reeked of Mary Jane. Was told days in advance the price and when I asked for change she "didn't have any" so I was basically forced to pay double because wtf else can you do? Also as shauntel below me has stated, melissa is ALWAYS gossiping about former employees and how people are trying to ruin her on yelp...take some responsibility and stop contributing to the stereotypes of black salons! I have been gettin my hair done for years and I took a chance even though I saw some bad reviews. She has NO respect for her client's time, whether this may be from issues with other past clients. But if you want to expands your business I definitely think you should treat the new clients way better. Don't come at them like you have so many clients that they don't matter. Melissa is great! This review is for her. I had a hard time getting a hold of her so I originally went to Kianna. My full weave was cute but set too far back. I had her fix it a little but it still wasn't perfect. Also, some tracks came loose and I had to fix them myself. So when it was time for a redo I HUNTED Melissa down (looked at other shops but they didn't have her reviews). I'm glad she did. She identified the problem with my lace front that had caused Kianna to struggle and fixed it. My hair looks fantastic! The price is very fair too. I would downrate her a star for being so damn hard to reach but I get annoyed when people downgrade for that or price. I am rating her on the quality of her work and that is 5 stars. read more

She is very friendly and professional so making an appointment w/ her was fast and easy plus prices are reasonable. They have complimentary beverages and snacks which is nice. The shop is clean and the assistant in the shop does clean consistently which is also nice. I spent about 5.5/6 hours their only because my hairs pretty thick but overall really good experience here w/ The ladies. Answering all my hair questions without sounding like I was pestering her while she was doing my hair. I get my hair braided by Sharae, a braider in this shop. I was looking for someone new to braid my hair, and Melissa, the owner, posted a video of Sharae's work. I was so impressed that I contacted Sharae immediately for an appointment. I have not been disappointed; she does a fantastic job, and really takes her time making sure the braids are neat, and long lasting.
