I booked my appointment with Sarah Nevins after tracking the screenshots of exactly-what-I-wanted to Sarah and Studio S. Sarah was actually the third stylist I've worked with in search of the perfect cool, high-contrast, ashy balayage that had been my dream haircut for two years because I'm based in LA. And she's the first one who got it right. My hair is particularly challenging because it requires lifting permanent color. Not only did Sarah meet the challenge but my balayage is beautiful. Sarah even added an additional flair a week later when we had an idea for the roots in front. Happily, I'm hoping to move to Brooklyn so I don't have to schedule my hair around my trips to NYC. I'm so happy to have found this place in the neighborhood! Korin was so lovely and offered me a beverage as soon as I got there. She did a great job giving me a dry cut and cutting my clip in extensions as well so everything blended nicely together. She was fun to chat with and made me feel so comfortable. I followed Scott here from his last salon and am thrilled that he's opened his own spot! Scott is an absolute genius with color. He has thoroughly transformed my hair and I will NEVER go to anyone else. If he decided to only see clients on Roosevelt Island, or while they were standing on their head the whole time, or on a pee covered subway platform, or in NJ (::shudders::) I would follow him there. That being said, Studio S is a WONDERFUL salon in an absolutely amazing location in Carroll Gardens (a block from the F/G!) My first time here was on their opening day so it was just Scott and I for the ~ 3 hours it takes to turn this (suddenly) greying brunette into a natural looking blonde. I HATE small talk, but Scott is an absolutely amazing person to chat with for 3 hours. I had a blast the whole time. A couple of other little things that really contribute to this salon being a first class experience (which, let's be honest don't really matter when you've found someone who can transform your hair, which is why I didn't care that Scott's last salon was teeny and perk free, but STILL): the shop is GORGEOUS and full of plants; they have cute little feet rests near the sinks. I've never, ever had somewhere to rest my feet while getting my hair washed/letting treatments soak in and I never missed them but now that I've experienced it, I'm shocked it isn't a thing everywhere! Game changer!; There's still and sparkling water and beer and wine. It was the middle of the day while I was there so I refrained From vino but I will 100% be partaking at my next (evening) scheduled appointment! The personal touch that Scott has always prioritized including texts for appointment reminders and incredible product recommendations (while never being pushy - at this last appointment I decided to go much cooler than usual and asked Scott if I should use a purple shampoo and he agreed and recommended one. While checking out I had to ask if they carried it. He doesn't care about selling product, just about his clients using the best products to achieve the hair they want) is of course amazing here. Scott is THE BEST. As someone with somewhat complicated hair (curly in the back/bottom layers, straighter in the front/on top; plus there's a lot of it and it grows fast; plus it's gradually graying), I never really knew what to do with my hair. Several good stylists made several ideas work really well, but in retrospect my hair never quite felt so much like "me" until Scott helped me gradually home in on a hairstyle that I love so much, is easy to maintain, and really feels like me -- stylish and fun, and uniquely me, without trying too hard. Service was quick and painless. For me the best feature of Studio S is the roomy salon chairs. As a fat woman, this is a legit concern when I travel, go to the movies, to a restaurant, and to the salon. I fit very comfortably in the chairs at Studio S. No squeezing in or hip pinching. It seems like a small thing but it's not when most of the world can be pretty uncomfortable for larger people. It was so nice to be able to relax and sit comfortably while I got my hair cut. I arrive there 10min after my time and was informed by the hairdresser she didn't have time to cut and dry my hair because she had someone else scheduled in 45min after my appointment and couldn't call to let the next person know because was short notice.
