I made a color consultation appointment with Nelly with an interest of doing highlights (without bleaching) on my jet black hair. Nelly supported that if I didn't want to bleach it then don't bleach me. She pulled out some inspirational photos for me and suggested that I do a full balayage. We agreed on the color (caramel). So the day of my appointment comes, and the whole process took approximately 2.5 hours and I love how it came out. My hair does not feel dry and still looks/feels fairly healthy. Nelly only takes one customer at a time, so I had the whole salon to myself. She's very warm and very easy to talk to. We shared many funny stories on a nice Saturday afternoon. Literally left the salon 10 min ago. First - I have good hair and I do know what I wanted. I wanted half a head of bleach highlights. Part of me was ready to protest any services that most of the stylists try to push - cut, blow out, etc. but Nelly asked me once about whether I wanted to do anything extra and didn't press. As well as she didn't commented on length or shape of my hair. That makes me come back for a hair cut, actually. Second - it was extremely fast! And the result was exactly what I wanted. I'm glad everyone else had good experiences here so I honestly expected a bit more than what I received. The haircut was good, not great, and the overall experience left me shocked. I don't actually know that I would go back even if I was in a pinch and here's why. I usually don't leave bad reviews but this place left me with one too many annoyances. I made an appointment for 3:30 and arrived several minutes before just so they can tell me they were running 30 minutes behind, which turned out to be 45 minutes. I would've really appreciated a call from them. I went for the wash and cut, and decided to skip the blow out for an extra $10. Little did I know that a blow out meant blow drying your hair. Unfortunately the stylist disappeared to the back and the owner rushed me to pay so I left the salon with a full head of wet hair... I have never experienced that before, ever at any salon. To top off the whole experience, after handing the owner my credit card to pay, I took cash out to tip. She spotted my cash and insisted that I paid in cash and refused to swipe my credit card. read more

I did a lot of research online and found that nelly did amazing color correction (i started doing it on my own so it was a mess). Nelly is the one constant. Fact is the "relationship" began that long ago and she has been cutting my hair since. I usually book last minute and she always finds a way to fit me in; sometimes coming in earlier or staying late just to accommodate. I was so nervous going into this hair appointment as I have yet to find a great place in Hoboken... until now! Nelly gave me EXACTLY what I asked for and I couldn't be happier. I wanted to go darker, but not black. She gave me the exact color and cut of the picture I showed her. Keep in mind I called her to schedule an appointment yesterday, when they were closed and she called me back within an hour to make the appointment. I went to Nelly solely based upon her reviews and that is why I love Yelp. She has incredible reviews because she truly does incredible work. I have never been to her before but she still took me as a last minute appointment and exceeded my expectations. I usually come in with low expectations first time going to someone since I have had my hair screwed up so many times in the past. Nelly asked what I wanted and perfectly delivered. She didn't cut too much off or give me funky layers. She even gave me the perfect amount of blonde for February. It's obvious that she takes her job very seriously, cares about her customers and does a phenomenal job making them happy. Today she highlighted my hair (a full), cut and deep conditioned it, as well as styled it. I honestly couldn't be happier with the outcome, especially as a first time customer. She leaves for Ecuador (where she is from) for a week tomorrow and she still managed to work a full day today even though she has so much to do to prepare. That's work ethic and that goes a long way! I went to Nelly a few weeks ago after having my highlights botched (read: orange) at another salon in Hoboken. I was extremely upset as I had an event coming up that week and my hair was incredibly brassy and fairly damaged. Nelly was 100% realistic with me as to what my expectations should be. She told me ahead of time that she would do her best to get the orange out, but that in doing so my hair would likely come out blonder than what I had originally wanted. I told her to do whatever, anything would be better than what it looked like at the time! I could not have been happier with the results. Nelly took my hair from that truly awful orange color to a beautiful ash blonde. She was right in that it was lighter than what I had originally had in mind, but it worked with my skin tone and at least it was a natural -looking hair color! She also showed me the back of my head because apparently the stylist who botched my color had also botched my cut and I didn't even realize because I was so distraught over the awful brassiness. She fixed the cut beautifully and didn't even charge me for it. I will definitely be coming back here from now on! The price is great for this area and Nelly really could not be better at what she does. read more

Not understanding all the rave reviews. Based on them, I booked an appointment with Nelly. I was so excited to meet who I thought would be my future hair stylist for life. After my visit, I am sure neither of us could pick the other out of a line up...and that suits me just fine. I called the salon and made an appointment - specifically with Nelly. In fact, I spoke with Nelly to make the appointment with her. I showed up to an empty salon (admittedly about 7 minutes late, though I did call to say I was running late) and was told to take a seating in the waiting area. After a few minutes, a woman approaches me and asks what I want. I told her (as I told the woman at the desk) that I was there for an appointment with Nelly. The woman advises that she is Nelly and asks if I would like to get my hair cut by someone else instead. Um....AWKWARD! I'm the only customer in a salon with TWO stylists and the one I made the appointment with is blatantly pushing me off on the other woman. After a little push back, Nelly reluctantly agreed to cut my hair - like she was doing me a giant favor. I should have walked out then and there and just had really long hair until I could find a stylist I can actually work with. Now, $75 (plus tip) poorer, I have a crappy, uneven haircut and am no closer to finding my lifelong stylist. Will sooner cut my hair myself than waste my time and money at this place again. Color was good but the cut was horrendous. I asked for two inches off. Nelly cut my hair (dry before she did my highlights) and cut about 5 inches off on my left side and 4 on my right side. Now the salon is closed for a week and my hair is noticeably uneven. read more

Went in for a partial highlight and cut. Customer service was great and they did an amazing job! Nelly did my cut and another woman did my color (didn't catch her name). Both were fabulous. I usually wait to get a groupon/living social/etc. to get my hair done to save money, but after a bad experience trying to use my coupon at a NYC salon, I made a last minute appointment at Studio 12. They made my highlights look so natural and Nelly did a really great cut--completely worth paying the full price. Their customer service and non-pushy sales techniques were refreshing.
