Plus it doesn't run on weekends which is a big bummer, and sometimes the trains only run to Waukegan instead of all the way to Kenosha so you have to carefully check schedules.

Since it's the end of the line it has a small yard that stores the trains when not in service. As far as action goes it's pretty boring but since it's the end of the line but you can catch them stacking up or leaving the pool as they start up and shut sown for the day. You can check the Metra schedule for arrival and departure times for photos or videos. Since the Metra station is not super active on the weekends the bonus is that the Kenosha street car stops here plenty of times and will take you to the lake, museum, harbor and through a sliver of the down town for you to ride of for pictures and videos. There is plenty of public viewing access with out trespassing and you can walk in the station for platform viewing. The station was useful to me when I lived in Kenosha for people to visit me from Chicago but those days are over since I moved, now it's the Amtrak intermodal station for my needs.

That said, unless you're coming from the east, you should really be using this station. I value the Crystal Lake station for several reasons: * Ample parking spaces, whether adjacent or right across Main Street * Convenient automated payment options: cash, credit, or commuter card * It has an agent who can answer all your questions and sell you the ticket you actually need (plus you pay less if you buy from the agent) * It's close to the end of the line, which means more seat availability inbound to Chicago * It has several convenient scheduling options to and from Chicago * And lastly, there are two coffee shops within 50 feet of the station: Trax, which is in the station itself, and Grounds Coffee Bar, which is immediately north of the station One other note is that the conductors who run these lines have been really friendly, and I have really been on every train in the morning from the 606-636, and outbound from 625-663. If you've been a loyal Pingree user, or if you're thinking about commuting, you should definitely try the Crystal Lake station!

It's small but offers a fair amount of parking, including overnight parking in the far lot. Off-street parking is only $2 a day and payable at machines near the station. On our last visit, only one machine was working, which caused the line to backup when the train was already waiting in the station. There's not always a ticket agent on duty (if not, you can buy yours on the train), but in my experience the building has been open if you need the restroom. There's also a small coffee stand if you want to grab a beverage on your way to the city. The station is pretty small, so if you arrive early I'd recommend either hanging out in your car or walking over a couple blocks to the shops if they're open. Bring cash because you'll need it if you have to buy your ticket onboard.

The station itself is small, not a lot of room inside. If taking the train during winter months, you'll most likely want to wait in your car until the train arrives. There is plenty of parking and it's a very reasonable price. The train tickets are very reasonable, as well. I've never had a late train or any issues what-so-ever. This is commuter train line. That's one thing to keep in mind if you decide to take this down. It will stop. Over and over and over again. But even with the stops you make good time, and it's WAY less stressful than making the drive yourself!

To refresh your memory: Paris Hilton breaks down in a ghost town without Nicole Richie. Now hear me out, people do arrive here... typically 5-10 minutes before the train arrives (understandable because I wait in my car until the train actually pulls up), but my House of Wax reference is pointed directly at the supposed coffee shop that's inside the station. Allegedly called Church St. Cafe but I haven't confirmed. Has anyone ever actually gotten coffee here? I love my Starbucks, but I would be 10x happier supporting a local spot if they would just, for the LOVE of caffeine, open up. And no this is not a COVID thing because I've had this dilemma since early 2019. The hours are wonky and unpredictable because I've literally caught the train at this station at every offered time between 5 am and 12 pm. I digress... The only fair thing for me to do is to compare this station to other Metra Rail Stations and so I will say it's not the best or fanciest, but it does the job, it's in a nice area, and it's reliable. There isn't a terribly large amount of seating outside or inside (although I've never seen a single soul inside) and a limited amount of bike racks although most people seem to just chain their bikes to the little fence. Location-wise, it has that hometown feel and is only a block away from Woodstock Square where you'll find a movie theater, restaurants, bars, and in the right season, the farmer's market. It's worth noting, you cannot purchase tickets here, but you can get them once you're on the train or through the Ventra app. How much you enjoy your train ride is dependant on what time you ride, what car you choose, and if you have snacks. Not all train cars are created equal... there's a couple of quiet cars at the front and back, newer cars have electrical outlets, a select few have wi-fi (only fast enough to check email), and the super new ones have cup holders. On the upside, seating choice is usually unrestricted because Woodstock is practically end of the line with Harvard the only stop before (if you're going into Chicago). Keep in mind, if they say the train leaves at 7:48 am, the train absolutely leaves at 7:48 am. Use the Ventra app to track the train and see if there are any delays, but there usually aren't. And COVID procedures are enforced on the train based on requirements in Chicago and the state. All I really want out of this train station is to add some more benches and to sell me a cup of coffee and maybe a cheese danish. I need the former because they do fill up quick and on the warm days when I do decide to wait outside, I often find myself contemplating sitting on the ground. And I need the latter because just take my money.

First to Review! ! ! *YAYE*…read more This Metra Station is directly outside the gate Corpside of Great Lakes Naval Service Training Center, and is the most affordable means of getting to downtown Chicago (on Saturday and Sunday an unlimited ride pass is 5 bucks) At the train station is a coffeeshop/drycleaners/misc goods that sells pretty good turkey + cheese croissant sandwiches, ice blend coffee drinks and they carry $5 earmuffs that don't look like the dorky ones that leave an elastic mark on your forehead :)
