We used Style Matters for our June 2012 wedding and they were amazing! We started off by meeting with Spencer and telling him what we were looking for and what types of music we liked. When it got closer to our date, he gave us a few options for DJs and we decided to go with Max. Max had a survey for us to fill out with our preferences, which I thought was great, and then we met him in person. We told him our main concern was being able to reach both the older and younger crowds and he told us it would absolutely not be a problem. He was right! Our dance floor was PACKED the entire night. I saw people I've never seen dance out on the floor. A ton of our guests mentioned afterwards how amazing Max was and how they couldn't believe how much they danced. I forgot to eat our dessert and use our photo booth because I was out on the dance floor all night! It's been a month and I'm still getting compliments on Max. He's awesome! I was looking for a DJ company to use for my wedding, and after the performance I saw at my sisters wedding, I knew her DJ company, Style Matters was who I had to go with. Spencer, the owner, is one of the nicest people you'll ever work with. He genuinely loves what he does, and cares about your big day. He was very accommodating and also very responsive and answered all my questions. Really refreshing to work with a vendor who didn't create any stress and really worked hard to make our day perfect. His line up of DJ's is equally amazing, and we had to have "Major Taylor", aka Ralph Darden who was SPECTACULAR!!! He rocked both mine and my sisters weddings - we both received so many compliments on how great he was - some even said he was the best DJ they ever saw at a wedding. His energy and passion really hyped up the crowd, and his custom mixes and techniques are awesome. He truly has talent not only for his DJ skills, but also for the way he works with people. He met with us in advance to go over our thoughts, ideas, and vision for the wedding. I met with him a couple of weeks prior to the wedding and gave him a list of artists we liked, and things we didn't like. In short, we had a great experience with Style Matters and highly recommend them to everyone. Spence were very easy to work with. We met with him early on and went over details of the wedding. He was then in contact with us via email until the month of the wedding when we met our final DJ: Margot. She was great. She came to our house and met with us in regards to our musical tastes. As my now husband and I met dancing at a charity event and danced the night away - having great music and dancing for our wedding was our TOP priority. I got a strong recommendation for Style Matters for my wedding reception and after reviewing their website my fiance and I met with Spencer. Spencer was very receptive and listened. We liked him right away ~ the concept of StyleMatters, that the DJs truly love music and that they strive to not have "typical" wedding music. We were also very happy to find out that their DJs have worked our venue, The Ivy Room, and thus very familiar as to what was needed for set-up. We also wanted them to do the music for the ceremony which was in the courtyard. Spencer said right away a second set-up in the courtyard would be needed but was included in on the price! My fiancee and I developed a long list of music in the months leading up to the wedding. We highlighted the "must-haves" and "do not play". We were assigned Noah, aka "Weaponry". We emailed him our reception list and ceremony list. As I was nervous about how the songs for the processional would go together, I asked if he could attend the rehearsal and he said it would be no problem. That was the first time I met him and he was very nice. Words cannot express how happy we were with going with StyleMatters and being blessed with Noah. Noah is truly a professional when it comes to mixing music. The three songs we had for the processional were too long to play each in its entireity, he blended them so seemlessly you would have thought we planned it that way ~ which we didn't so thank God for Noah! As for our reception? Our number one goal was to have everyone dance their a** off! Noah did it to perfection. We danced the whole night and I don't remember the dance floor ever being empty. He blended all of our music together so well, that again, it felt it must have been planned that way ~ again thank God for Noah. Imagine a reception hall full of people, dancing in a circle, singing "Bohemian Rhapsody" at the top of their lungs! Our guests have been raving about our reception every since and it seems every day we look at each other and say "remember when they played this" or "remember that"? We used Style Matters as our DJ for our wedding, and they did an unbelievable job. Max was assigned as our DJ, and he was perfect. Spencer and Max were cool, easy and fun to talk to, and always very professional. Throughout the process of emailing them with our ideas and our tastes in music, they got a great sense of our music tastes and were able to put together the perfect music for the wedding of these two music-obsessed people. The cocktail hour music was great, the dinner music was perfect, and the dancing portion of the reception...let's just say that we had envisioned a dance party with all our friends and families, and that's exactly what we got for the entire night. The dance floor was packed all night--parents, grandparents, college and high school friends alike! The night built perfectly into a dance floor frenzy. Max took requests from our friends but also managed to fit in all the songs that we requested as must-play songs. The DJ was the number one thing that we got compliments about during the night, and people are still talking about it a few weeks later. I think the best compliment I can give to Style Matters is to share how many people came up to us and told us how the wedding music seemed so "us." Our wedding on Oct 15, 2011 at the Morton Arb could not have gone off as amazingly if it weren't for the awesome DJ skills of Margot, our Style Matters DJ. As soon as I met her I new that she was going to nail the soundtrack for our wedding, as we had immediately compatible musical taste, yet she still understood the somewhat reserved taste of my wife and was able to cater to this throughout the entire evening. The mix-ins of Tribe and Mos Def, with Sara Bareilles, Edward Sharp and Ray L were seemless and kept the mood, and dance floor, exciting and packed. Margot was supercool throughout the entire meet and greet, as well as the event, and made it perfectly clear that she was there to not only give an amazing DJ performance, but also to make our night as smooth and carefree as possible. She didn't ramble on at the mic like a lot of DJ's do, as Ive noticed at some of the recent weddings we've attended. She accepted requests only within our style range though she was still courteous to all our guests. We loved having Style Matters as our wedding DJs. We had Scott who was wonderful. From the first time we met him, he was professional and worked hard to get to know what we wanted - and boy did he deliver. He balanced playing the many songs we had hoped we would hear, with being a good judge of what the crowd wanted to hear (and when) and making sure people were having fun on the dance floor. And none of that hokey stuff :) For a day of experience, honestly, we couldn't be happier - a 5 star experience. Leading up to the day of, communication was a bit spotty. We had to reach out to prompt them to send us the survey for the day of. While ALL staff were very LGBT friendly, they didn't have and LGBT friendly survey for us to fill out (so we had to fill out a survey with "bride" and "groom" on it). Sometimes, our emails weren't responded to for a week or so. And our DJ wasn't assigned to us until 2 weeks prior to the day. I wouldn't let any of this discourage any couple from using Style Matters (we are glad we did), but I would just use this info so you don't get nervous if the communication leading up to the event is a bit spotty. read more

Style Matters is awesome. We were behind schedule in finding a DJ for our wedding and I got a hold of Spencer. We dove right in and met the next day. He was professional, calm and confident that he would find the right DJ for us amongst a group of them that he works with. We filled out a very looooong questionnaire. We almost dreaded it, but as we went through it, we found it very helpful for us. It helped organize parts of the day decide on a lot of important songs. It also brought us to Kyle, who was the perfect fit for our wedding ceremony and reception. We met him for a beer to talk things over and afterwards we were confident that he was either man for the job. I never saw so many people on the dance floor so quickly at any other wedding in my life! Everyone complimented the food and especially the music. Let me start by saying I don't really rate people on Yelp. We decided to work with Style matters mainly because of the low price, compared to a lot of their competitors located in the Chicago area. Style matters has a system, meet with the boss and he assigns you to the best DJ for your specific taste. We scored Max "Abstrax" and let me speak for both of us when I say " YEEEEESSSS". My Wife and I are both classical musicians, so we had very high standards. Max met with us and ironed out our incredibly diverse song requests. We wanted classical, we wanted rap, we wanted taylor swift, we wanted Coldplay, we wanted the Beatles, and of course Frank Sinatra. He never even blinked, and just smiled at us and told us how excited he was. I honestly was not expecting what we received, I expected so much less, (no offense Max I just had no idea how great it was gonna be!!) I immediately noticed when he started working he has a great MC look and voice to control a room (in this case our wedding) which is no easy task in the three room setup presented by the delicious and Beautiful Salvatore's Restaurant, and over our loud friends. He did everything we asked, and he did it with bold choices. He seamlessly transitioned from one song to the next, with no audible break, unless of course he wanted there to be one for dramatic effect. There was a moment when Max made an incredible transition between some hard pumping rap, to the Beatles, this transition was far from subtle, which added to it's genius. He knew exactly how to keep the crowd pumped up. He often made us wait for the "drop" by isolating the openings of songs, which in turn made people want to sing, and made people get really excited. NEVER could we have imagined how much awesome occurred at our wedding, once we started dancing we never stopped. He kept everyone dancing and excited for over 2 and a half hours; NO ONE EVER LEFT THE DANCE FLOOR!!! No easy task with a dance floor one quarter hoosiers, one quarter business men, and the rest classical musicians. If you work with Style Matters, request Max, he not only is super chill, and an incredible DJ and MC, but he also will surprise you in the most incredible and unexpected ways. We had String Theory play at our ceremony and cocktail hour and they learned two special songs for us that had me crying all the way down the aisle. They were incredible and made our ceremony truly unique. I had my wedding in October of 2010, and I can tell you that one of the best decisions I made was hiring Style Matters. My wife and I were very worried about hiring a DJ that would focus more on lights and inflatable props than making sure our guests had a good time. I could not of been more pleased with the way everything turned out. Our initial meeting with Spencer was very low pressure. He was a true professional. Spencer ended up assigning us a DJ that he thought would best fit who we were and how we wanted our wedding to go. Our DJ for our event, Max, was perfect. I am usually very discerning and can be very picky. One of my biggest faults is that I tend to complain too much. Max gave me absolutely nothing negative to say which is saying a lot for me. This is an accomplish in and of itself. He met with us and nailed down the tone and theme of our wedding, he showed up early, and played music that kept our guests dancing the entire night. I have been to so many boring weddings where no one dances. Our event, thanks to Max and Spencer was a complete success. We could not have asked for a better DJ than Max from Style Matters. In fact, we could not have asked for a better overall experience from start to finish. Spencer was extremely responsive from the first email I sent. My now husband and I felt totally at ease when we had our first meeting with him. I was confident that we were in good hands. About six weeks before the wedding, Spencer matched us up with Max. Max came over to our place a couple weeks before the wedding to go over a timeline for the evening, to get our must plays/do not plays, and just to generally chat about the vibe we wanted at our reception. Again, I knew Max got us and couldn't wait to see what he had in store for our wedding. Whatever expectations I had going into the wedding were completely surpassed. Max was AMAZING. He helped remind us of our timing, got us through a slideshow and toasts flawlessly. And then it was time to dance. And everyone danced. Really. Everyone. The dance floor was packed from the first to last song. My husband and I couldn't pull ourselves away and danced all night. At the end of the night I was really sad that the music had to stop. We had that much fun. There was a line of people waiting to tell Max how much they enjoyed the music and all my husband and I kept saying to each other was literally "wow, he was awesome. This was crazy." Perhaps it was our slightly inebriated best man who said it best when at the end of the night he told Max "dude, you rocked a lot of d*cks off...seriously." We got married on 10/6/18 and Dustin was our DJ - he was incredible! We met a few weeks earlier and liked him from the jump, and he gave us some great advice about the songs we were choosing, and even provided us with a list of songs to help us with our final decisions. Dustin did the music for our ceremony, cocktail hour, and the reception, and everything was perfect. Everyone was on the dance floor the entire time, and were shouting "one more song!" by the end of the wedding. We made it a little difficult by telling him we like all types of music from all eras, and with only a few "must haves" Dustin hit it on the head. He suggested we go with Kyle as the DJ for our wedding and we agreed! We met with Kyle about a week before the wedding and my fiance and I both loved him. He made a list of things that we liked, asked us questions about things we haven't even thought about yet- and basically made us feel completely comfortable and relaxed about that part of our wedding. The day of he was completely professional and was so great at picking music. He took guest requests and was really good at weeding out the ones that he knew we wouldn't like as the bride and groom! It seemed like he was very in tune to how people reacted to certain songs to make sure to keep guests on the dance floor. We got so many compliments about the DJ! It's hard to judge yelp these days because people either respond if they are super happy (5 stars) or super pissed (1 star). So, you could say the reviews could be biased. I don't want to add to the cliche's of 5 stars on Style Matters, but I have to say, Spencer is top notch, world class, and a true professional. Out of all of the vendors we worked with, one of the best. He is responsible (responds to all emails within hours, except when he is traveling) and is all about YOU. And, when you are bride, that is super important. We ended up using Style Matters (for DJ) and String Theory for the ceremony and couldn't have been more pleased. String Theory coordinated directly with my officiant so I didn't have to be involved at all. Spencer suggested Noah (aka Weaponry) as our DJ. We were concerned at first since we weren't sure if our music styles matched, but both Spencer and Noah worked with us to ensure the day was to our liking. End result? My biggest fear (no one dancing)...never came true. Noah had people dancing till the very very end and the guests wanting more. First off, apologies for the heinous 1.5 year delay on this. Book these guys for your wedding as we did, or any other event, and you'll be happy you did. Right off the bat, we knew style matters was right for us. Spencer invited us into his home where we were able to get a read on his own tastes, which definitely jived with us (RJD2 album art on the wall, etc etc). The process was like that from that point forward: casual conversation about us, him, the DJs on the SM team, and what we'd like to happen vibe-wise at the wedding. He recommended Dustin, who we met with a little while later and he was a great fit. Dustin was able to play the right tunes through are ceremony on cue, and then kept the party going with great music the entire evening. AWESOME NOTE: They take your "do not play" list to heart. Dustin totally denied requests for the chicken dance and Bon Jovi amongst others (at our request!). As much as we love our families, knowing some weird uncle or +1 jokester couldn't ruin the vibe made us rest easy through the magic night. Slight bummer note: We weren't able to use wireless mics for the ceremony, but apparently that was because the venue (salvage one) would have to much feedback or something like that. Dustin installed a mic stand and all went well, but worth noting when you're looking into sounds options with your DJ. If you consider yourself having good taste in music, and appreciate a friendly, casual process with all the professionalism you need, call these guys and get the conversation going. Spencer was the DJ for our wedding, and man did he do an unbelievable job. We had only one real request to ask of him..make sure every is out on the dance floor the whole night, and he delivered. He had a real good feel for the crowd. Just after dinner, he noticed our guests were looking antsy to hit the dance floor and he encouraged us to open it up asap..we agreed..and man was he right..the second it opened up every person in the room flocked to the dance floor. Some of the feedback and comments: 'you know its an awesome wedding when you look around and every single person is out of their seats dancing', 'my 65yr old uncle, due for knee replacement surgery got out into the dance circle and was dancing around with his cane', 'people i've never ever seen dance were out dancing the whole night'. Spencer had asked ahead of time what type of crowd would be at the wedding, i.e age, etc. I'm not sure if most DJs do that, but they should..he was on point, hitting songs that really brought back memories. Here's the situation- 14 Days prior to my wedding, came across some SCATHING, awful reviews of the DJ I initially hired. Panicking, as my wedding is 2 weeks away (nonetheless, on NEW YEARS EVE), I turn to yelp to find a replacement. Contact Style Matters at 11:36PM. Spencer responds to me within 4 MINUTES "We've got you covered"..... knew at this point I was in great hands. Spencer is amazing. He immediately earned my trust (obviously), but nonetheless, for a demanding DJ day, did not try and give me a run for my money knowing I was in a desperate situation. Style Matters is phenomenal. Spencer sets us up to meet with our DJ, Ryan a few days later. My husband and I sat with Ryan for about 45 minutes and knew immediately we were in great hands. He is not only a pro, but we share a very similar taste in music. I gave him a list of the songs we absolutely did not want played, and gave him a few recommendations on what we'd love to hear. He chose the rest, and he ROCKED IT! I cannot emphasize how happy I am that our initial DJ misfortune turned us to Style Matters, and we cannot have imagined our wedding day without the phenomenal talent of Ryan & Style Matters. He made our wedding SO memorable, and we LOVED his suggestion for our big "New Years Eve Countdown"- it was a huge hit. His presence was much more than I could have ever imagined- he flawlessly handled all of the introductions & MC moments of the night. Our DJs name was Andrew and although I wasn't able to meet with him before our wedding; my husband assured me that he would do a great job! He did not disappoint! We honestly had a packed dance floor the entire night! People I would have never expected to dance were out of their seats "breaking it down!" Andrew did a great job of having a mixture of classic oldies songs with songs from today. One of my bridesmaids exclaimed the next day, "Wow I have never seen such a packed dance floor!" I cannot recommend this company enough! They are organized, have a great system in place, and talented DJs. I also personally recommend Andrew. We worked with Style Matters for our August 2018 wedding at Ovation (if you haven't booked your venue yet, you must consider, it's the most beautiful and perfect space). After going to Ovation's soiree and checking out some of their DJs, we immediately fell for and requested Margot. And it was one of the best decisions we made!! Margot is incredibly talented and did the most amazing job keeping the party raging all night long. Our friends and family and parents' friends (all of whom have diverse musical tastes) were on the dance floor the entire evening! Margot played to our requests, hitting all of our "must plays," but also read the crowd expertly and threw in some fun surprises. After our last song (ain't no mountain high enough), she surprised us with an encore, Chandelier by Sia. The party erupted in interpretive dance moves, I was lifted in the air by my friends, and it was one of the most exciting and joyful moments of the night. We hired Style Matters in 2019 for our original wedding date on 4/25/2020 and then had to reschedule to 10/31/2020 due to COVID. Spencer was great to work with the entire time and was very flexible and accommodating for our new date. With all the stress of planning and reducing guest counts and shifting with the times we didn't have much time or energy to put into our "playlist" but we filled out the questionnaire and our DJ Max took it from there and killed it! As most others have already stated, Style Matters crushes it! Spencer was very easy to work with, even when we changed our minds about certain aspects only a few days ahead of our wedding. Props to him for making everything seamless from start to finish! We had the string trio play at our ceremony and they were amazing. DJ Pascale was the quintessential DJ! First of all he was completely responsive by email, phone and text the week of our clients wedding on 6/21/14. Beyond that , Andrew was easy going and accommodating with a few twists and turns that always seem to happen at events . Andrew just said "No problem or your got it". Overall, we had a wonderful experience with Style Matters. Spencer, the owner, was super professional and responsive. He paired us with a DJ based on an extensive questionnaire my fiance and I filled out together. DJ Intel, Jason, was incredible at our wedding, giving us the best dance party we could have imagined. He showed an incredible feel for the pulse of the crowd, and had some impromptu responses to the best man speech and to calls from the crowd during the dance party that were amazing, really contributing to making it such an amazing night. I am so happy we decided to work with Style Matters and String Theory for our wedding on 6/13/15. String Theory did a beautiful job for hour cocktail hour on the Chicago River, we are happy we opted strings for this portion of the night. Andrew (DJ Pascale) absolutely killed the reception. The floor was packed from ages 12-85 all night long. My feet hurt so bad the next day from non-stop dancing, high-kicking, crowd surfing, and stupid hilarious moves. He was so professional while introducing our wedding party and speakers. The perfect amount of direction, without the cheesy interjections, whistles, props, and dance demo's. THANK YOU Style Matters for being the opposite of your typical wedding DJ's. For those anxious planners (ehh em, me) just understand you won't get officially matched up with your DJ until about 30 days before the event, then they typically meet with you a week or two beforehand. This had me a little nervous, but after some communication was worked out we had Andrew lined up for us and spent at least an hour with him going over our preferences. All the five star reviews for Style Matters are right on. Max was the DJ for our wedding on August 8, and he did an incredible job. The second the mother/son dance was over everyone jumped up and filled the dance floor. It was packed from beginning to end, even though our wedding took place in a VERY hot tent. We had a very wide age range at our wedding, and Max got them all dancing. I couldn't be happier with Style Matters, and as the other reviewers have said, Spencer is great to work with and is extremely organized and responsive.
