I haven't been here in over a decade and wanted to revisit. Sub station has a classic sandwich shop feel with the wood interior. The sandwich had a good amount of meat and the bread was soft. This place is the best place in Bakersfield to get sandwiches. I love the staff and the food. Anytime we come in the staff is always friendly and welcoming. Such a great small business to support. I really recommend getting their #1 with extra vinaigrette and banana peppers if you like flavor lol. Overall love this place and it's a must. I used to love this place when it first opened but now it's a pretty average sandwich. I normally can't make it in time to eat here since they close at 330 pm but today I was able to since I was able to get out of work early. I was really looking forward to that same great taste and texture that used to love but it definitely fell short today. Bread was soft but dry and the ingredients used tasted pretty average to me. We haven't visited Substation in awhile and on our recent visit, we did not feel welcomed at all. I use to live in this neighborhood, so we visited more than we do now. The place hasn't changed much and it's not hard to find. Just know Substation is in a very busy area, so good luck during lunch time. As soon as we walked up to the door, there are "enter" only and "exit" only signs which is a good sign they are practicing safe/social distancing measures. It wasn't busy at all. There were 2 people eating in the patio and no one inside but us. They had two workers. When we walked up to check the menu on what we would like, we took a little while since they have a variety of sandwiches on their menu. While standing there trying to decide what we wanted, we felt rushed. The lady taking our order was extremely rude and not welcoming at all. My first question was, "what happened to your tritip sandwich"? Her response "we have never had a tritip sandwich." I continued with "oh, the one downtown has a triptip sandwich." Her response "we are not affiliated with downtown, we never have been." Okay so I moved on from that and while I was trying to figure out what I wanted my husband ordered a sandwich for my son, then realized after they have specialty sandwiches and he would probably want that instead. So he asked her to change the order from this to that, which she was fine with. Then he ordered his sandwich and her response "so then you don't want the other one?". He said yes, I'm ordering 3 sandwiches in total. She was not pleasant at all, very pushy and not happy to be there. I ordered the brisket sandwich and you can either get it with sriracha Mayo or bbq sauce and I asked for sriracha Mayo with bbq on the side and to add lettuce and tomato to my sandwich. When we got the sandwich, no bbq sauce on the side. I think she was already annoyed that she didn't care. I can definitely understand if it was a full house and we were standing there holding up the lines, but we were literally the only people there. Then to top it off, we waited 45 min just to get our sandwiches. After she took our order she moved over to the counter where the other lady was building our sandwiches one by one while the other one that was rude just kept chatting it up. She didn't even help the other girl. Not sure what their protocol is there, but I sure hope she was not the owner and just a random worker, because if that's how business is being ran during these hardships during COVID19 then they must not like business. With so many different sandwich places in Bakersfield, this one is definitely not on my top 10. There are so many other local sandwich spots that are extremely friendly and happy that you're supporting them during these crazy times. I won't be coming back. The sandwiches were mediocre and the attitude is definitely not worth the visit. We didn't come to ruin your day, we came because we were hungry. Hope this was just a one time incident. New hours , and apparently some new people , still a treat to go there , the man behind the counter carries the whole place with super service , very hard to fine anymore , mini sub and salad bar with fill you up with maybe a small portion to take home , well run . Still the best run sandwich shop in the area , cant be beat , worth the drive if going in that direction to a ball game , hockey etc., with the new hours , its even better ! read more

Food was good! I recommend the #1 it was tasty... The customer service was lacking, although I did notice that there was one young lady with glasses and a pony tail that was on register, I would just like to say she was amazing, and has excellent customer service! She made us feel so welcomed. Really not a great sandwich. The turkey wasn't great quality and I didn't get any dressing (mayo? Mustard?) on my bread. Completely dry bread is my biggest pet peeve. If I could give 0 stars I would for this particular experience I had today. I come here all the time and get wonderful customer service experience. And the food is always amazing. Today the food was amazing but I was helped by a young lady named Andrea. First she has no idea what she's doing. She's rude. She was short with me when I asked questions. And she just looked so unhappy to be there. In these times we are so lucky to have jobs but some people don't have appreciation. Be grateful to have a job and smile. A smile goes a long way and I think this girl needs more training. I hope she gets it or they put her in the back. read more

I learned that the Sub station downtown and this Sub station are not owned by the same people. They have super identical menus though and they taste exactly the same. So I'm a HUGE fan of this place. The subs are everything I want when I think of a sub. Good, thick bread, vinegar and oil, tasty deli meat... I'm in heaven with each bite. I'm a toasted sub kind of girl so I stick to the hot sub menu. All are delicious but I like the basic turkey and mayo. The fixings are provolone, lettuce, tomato, salt/pepper, and oil/vinegar. They have extra to add on. I saw cream cheese as an add on to any sub and that's intriguing to me! The price is average. 7.95 for a sub and that doesn't include a side or drink, that's separate. My total usually comes out to $12 something for a sub, side and 20 oz drink. The staff is ALWAYS friendly. For as long as I've been coming here, I have never received bad service and I've never had to wait long for my name to be called even during their lunch rush. The restaurant is very clean, has plenty of seating inside and outside under their covered patio. If you're a fan of sub sandwiches and have yet to try this place, I highly recommend! read more

This place is a nice sandwich shop with nice people working inside. It is in a huge plaza and there is decent parking. The sandwiches are good, meats are good, veggies are fresh, it is served on soft fresh bread. The sandwiches are not a very good value though, for almost eight dollars they serve a pastrami sandwich with much less than a quarter inch of meat. If you like your sandwiches with little protein, it may not be an issue. But honestly, it was the least pastrami I have ever seen on a sandwich, and in Bakersfield I usually pay $6.50 to $7.00. Not sure if I will be back, maybe come with wife, she would enjoy the salad bar, it looked great. read more

Ordered a hot #9 with avocado. This is beef and turkey with provolone on wheat bread. One sandwich 1 small bag of chips and 2 drinks. $17.00. All would have been fine except that the sandwich came to me severely burnt. The 2 girls behind the counter apparently didn't care that it was burnt and certainly did make any effort to rectify the sandwich. Over the years this has been a great place to eat and can't help but to think the owner would not have found this acceptable. read more

It has been a while since I have actually "Yelped" but I feel as if there isn't any other way to get the message across to the ownership of this Sub Station. My family and friends have been coming here for the last 20 years and have always LOVED THE FOOD. It's not the same since Beth left. Time and time again we have received horrible service. Each time we have had any issue with our order, from a simple "you forgot to add sprouts" to "can I have a paper bag", it has been a HORRIBLE experience coming here especially the last year. The employees never seem to be happy with their job, talk down to customers and do not try to make anyone happy. We will NOT be coming here again. read more

Karla and Kaylee you rock I have been coming to this place since I was in high school/ college and it still has that same appeal as if I stepped foot back 20+ years ago. This was always my go to sandwich and salad bar favorite. They always have had the best subs and salad bar fixings I've ever encountered. I reminisced with the ladies about how I would go broke coming everyday when I was younger. They told me that the place has changed ownership many times but every owner has promised to keep the same tradition of tastes and experience. I've been telling my wife all about this place forever and she finally got a chance to come try it out. She was blown away with the subs and that they even offer GF bread. So disappointed!!! Should've read the reviews before going. It seems this place has gone down hill in the last year. My husband and I were looking forward to eating here. We have been to this sub station a few times (last year-ish) and the subs were always great. Went on a Saturday at 10:30am to get subs to go. The place was not busy (which it usually is) so I was expecting a good sub, nope. We ordered turkey subs #12 & #5 (with bacon). Both subs had 2 very very thin slices of turkey and wheat bread was a bit dry and just too much bread. Cheese was weirdly small and centered on sandwich. One sandwich had onions, and one was supposed to have oil and vinegar and it didn't. Guess they don't know their own ingredients. They were generous with bacon that's why I gave 2 stars. Lastly, they had a special for teachers $2 off if show badge. I didn't see sign since it was off to side, think the cashier could have mentioned it. I may go back but I will check sandwich before leaving. read more

I've been digging Sub Station Stockdale lately and have been trying a variety of things they offer on my lunch hour. In addition to yummy subs, they have a fantastic salad bar! For $3 and some change you can do one trip and stuff a bowl filled with goodies. It's more expensive if you want the all-you-can-eat portion. But I've learned to squeeze a lot into the bowl and get my money's worth. They also have a decent selection of soups. I've tried the ministrone lately and it was good with my salad. A salad, soup and drink will set you back about $10. They also offer delicious cold as well as toasted subs. In addition to the regular size, you can get a mini/half sub (which is quite large). The mini subs only come in certain varieties but are overall worth it for less money. The subs come out fast and they actually write down what you owe on a ticket and do the math themselves. Kind of charming. They do take credit cards too...unlike a previous yelper assumed. Lastly, I enjoy the dining space here. If it's a nice day they have a great patio to enjoy your lunch on! read more

Don't know what has happened to this place but it's not likely we will be returning. I've been to the one downtown several times and the only complaint I had was the price, so it wasn't a weekly lunch destination. However, I was with family members recently near Stockdale and wanted to show them how good the food was there. I am considerably disappointed in the quality of the product at Stockdale. The sub roll, which is one of my favorite parts of the meal, was not fresh and very dry and crumbly. For the high price I expect better in not only quality but also quantity. Three 8" cold sandwiches and one drink was almost $40 and the food was only mediocre with not a huge amount of meat. None of us were happy with our meal. I'll try the one downtown again some day, which will hopefully be better food. The good point at Stockdale was the polite staff. That goes a long way with me, thus the two stars. read more
