Authentic no frills store front that has the classic option of 'everything' that includes vinegar, oil, Pickles, etc. - what really tells me they know what their doing! This local sandwich shop has been around for a number of years. It's family owned and operated and I love to be able to support local businesses when I can. Especially ones like Subman. Service is always spot on and the sandwiches, oh lawdy, don't get me started! When I arrived at 2 in the afternoon, there was a line that stretched to the door, about 6-7 customers deep (social distancing observed due to our new friend, Covid) and continued to grow as I was there. However the line moves fairly quickly, so no complaints about that. The menu board is extensive with a wide variety of selections and combinations of freshly carved meats, cheeses and/ or chopped veggies. In years past, I've used this spot to cater work functions/ meetings. Tim, the owner worked with me to provide my team with amazing variety and great tasting sandwiches. All served with fresh condiments on the side so nothing gets soggy and staff could top off their sandwiches as they liked. You just can't compare this place to any chain sandwich shop. I loved Subman and wish there was one closer to me. I found it to be reasonably priced and the ingredients were so fresh. I love how you can choose all of your favorite toppings. I guess the older man is the owner, another young guy was there. I had no inclination as soon as I walked in that they were happy to be there. No welcome.. no smiles, no personalities. While out for a coastal drive adventure and soon found our selves in Encinitas by the afternoon, and hungry. Subman saved the day! We were welcomed with smiles by four sub chefs and the owner. I could tell that this spot is a Encinitas neighborhood staple and well loved by locals. It got a socal surf n skate local charm with the only thing that was missing was the beach since it's tucked away just a tiny bit east of the 5. It's a family owned business that has been in around for a long time, mentioning that they've seen generations of customers come in over the last 20+ years. It truly felt like a place you'd grow up with. I live to support small/local businesses! There are so many options of subs listed on the board but you can customize your sub from the size, bread, proteins (meats), cheeses, veggies, and sauces (try their amazing sauce). For myself, I got a medium size sandwich with all the veggies on squaw bread with deli mustard, oil and vinegar, salt and pepper. Also gave into some protein salami, ham, and capicolla, which was good, and i also think it's safe to say a meatless version would be tasty too. I was craving some cheesiness, but since I'm lactose intolerant i had to steer clear. Ezra, one of the sub chefs, mentioned I could bring in plant based cheese and they would be happy to pop it on next time, which I thought was very kind and accommodating. My friend got the the large Italian sub, finished it all in one sitting, and didn't need to eat the rest of the day. We also got drinks and some bags of chips. Lived in the area for over 30 years but never thought of going to Subman. I was craving an Italian sub and my older son recently told me Subman was the "best". So after Pickleball today, went to this location. Somewhat hidden but know the area well. Since recommended by my son, no surprise the sub was amazing. Got on squaw bread too. Help was friendly and talked a bit to the owner. Will try another sand next week. Highly recommended. Also got large sub, huge and fair price. read more

Stumbled upon subman (had never heard of it or seen it, and I'm in Encinitas all the time). Little ma and pa shop. SO GLAD I DID!! Such friendly and helpful workers, fresh and clean ingredients, and the cherry on top is their homemade "awesome sauce" which is a way better version of board and brew's. I have 30 minutes for lunch. I ordered a meatball sub and the guy told me it would be 5-10 minutes. I left and returned 5 minutes later and they had not started the order. My leaving was the excuse they used for not starting the order. They acted like they were going to start the order but I can tell they were not interested in doing the order. I canceled the order. My instinct told me this would have been a bad outcome. I'm grateful because it appeared I was probably saved from food poisoning as I took a second look at the cleanliness of the establishment. They make good sandwiches, but nothing earth shattering. As a local small business, providing basically the same product as larger, corporate entities next-door, you exist because local community members support you through their patronage. When you treat them as rudely as the owner treats certain customers, especially during business times or God forbid if you are a minority, you can expect negative reviews and losing customers. The sad thing is, it is obvious this business employees a lot of local teens, who are just trying to make an honest living, and they are candidly far more respectful and appreciative to customers than the owner is. I would honestly happily order from them when he is not present. Why they would work for somebody like him is beyond me. It's one of those businesses that tries to insist on cash only for payment, which tells you a lot. The order routinely gets orders wrong when he is ringing people up. I'm not sure if he is deliberately trying to sow confusion so that he can overcharge them or that he has that much disdain for people that he doesn't even care if it cost him business. He literally slammed my sandwich down on the counter because a trio in front of me could not explain the order to him in a mutually understandable way after many minutes of going through it. I tried to assist by explaining to him what they were trying to say about their order. This is after he ignored me, standing at the counter for easily 10 minutes, waiting to pay for my sandwich, which was in the toaster being unattended and got overtoasted. I still didn't complain about that and was happy to take the sandwich witout saying anything, but after he slammed it on the counter, I had to give him a piece of my mind and I'm glad I did.
