Caesar Salad and Marinated Artichoke Hearts. That's what I thought the menu says but it turns out to be yummy grilled Artichokes, that includes the heart. For the last few years, I've been looking for an authentic Italian spot in north county that has a reasonable price point, good food, and a nice atmosphere. I think I finally found that here at Forchettina. It's a fairly casual spot, but the decorations are very cute and a little kitschy (in a good way!) As soon as I walked in, I could tell it was likely going to be an authentic Italian restaurant, as the servers and cooks were all speaking in Italian. The service was great, and our server was very kind, funny, and helpful in his recommendations. We got the carbonara, parma pizza, cannoli, and a couple drinks. We really enjoyed our main courses as they were both very tasty, well seasoned, and well cooked. My boyfriend had been craving carbonara lately, and he said this definitely hit the spot. The pizza had an excellent crust, had the perfect amount of toppings, and was not soggy. For dessert we shared the cannoli and it was very nice as well. One of our friends might have just introduced us to our current favorite Italian restaurant. Looking for freshly made pasta with delicious sauce (made from Italian canned tomatoes) and ready to be surprised with their flavorful special soup of the day? Look no more. Give Forchettina a try! You can thank me later. We were here for dinner on a Sunday. There's enough parking right in front of the restaurant. The ambiance was so great with festive vibes and a Christmas tree right in the middle. Several tables were occupied, but there was enough room for us and we were seated right away indoors. The owner of the restaurant is a friendly lady who handed out our menus and took our orders shortly after. The daily special soup was Minestrone. It was perfect for our chilly night, packed with veggies. Next, we had Spaghetti Bolognese -- it was so light for a pasta with irresistible sauce and noodles. Incredible rude staff. Placed a pick up order, they missed an item that I ordered. All they had to say was "sorry we missed that, what can we do to make this right," instead they say "so, you want "free food" now?" New owners and a much more classy and cozy design but annoying music as most pizza places seem to have. Very attentive staff. A much bigger menu including pasta dishes too. Pizza was 5 star for us and was. New York style. We're from that area and love NY style. Delicious sauce, cooked perfectly and correct proportions- not cheese overloaded. Meatballs were good, about a four but have nothing on Rosanna's. They really fell down in the eggplant parm sandwich. Huge portion and the bread was amazing and unwieldy to actually eat but I can deal with that. The eggplant itself tasted smokey or burnt-- it was not fried in olive oil in the typical Southern Italy way. It's also not breaded like Italian American style but that's fine. The smoky taste was really odd. But what killed it was the salt level. It was inedible. Everything else there leaned salty but this was just too much. Neither of us could eat it. Eggplant parm is one of my yardstick items when I go to these restaurants too. Decent assortment of alcoholic beverages. Next time we'll try the pasta and salads. But for now I can only recommend the pizza. read more

I think this is a very good italian spot that is underrated due to its location. It sits within a very popular series of food plazas as you drive along el camino real, but it's particularly tucked away and hard to see. Perhaps that's part of its charm. As for the food itself, i am of two minds: on the one hand I really like the pizza- but I hope the staff is encouraged to keep making them as **** italian as possible ****. We have a lot of pizza places in the area that serve good thick crust, thick cheese american pizza. Not nearly as many that as truly italian in make. I think thin crust, almost wet like buona forchetta. I've had it both ways here but hopefully they'll get their consistency down. Either way the food and vibes were excellent. read more

UPDATE: I'm modifying my review (I had previously given an updated review that was a little more negative), as perhaps I was a little too harsh, and we want to support this restaurant. What I will say is simply this: the last pizza we had had too much cheese (very unlike what you'd get on a pizza in Italy, but more like what you typically get in the US - perhaps American customers are simply demanding more and they are responding, which is natural). (By the way, this is not to say they don't make good pizza - compared to just about anything around here, they are superior. I do not get the high stars. I have been here twice. Didn't love it the first time but came back to try again since it has high stars. It was worse than first time. I got pasta with pesto and there was almost no pesto on it! It was dry and tasted like pasta with a little bit of basil. The garlic bread is made on pizza dough and although I could taste that it could be good, I couldn't bite it! I had to grab it with my back teeth and tear. My children didn't like their pasta either. I just came here with my friends and we ordered 2 vodka sauce pastas (one GF), and pesto pasta as well as a gluten free margarita pizza. This was extremely disappointing as we were here in the past when it was "forchettaboutit" and our food did not taste the same. It was SO much better before. We waited over 30 minutes for our food when they were not busy at all and there was no wait, when we asked the update on our food and the guy (we confirmed it was the owner) was rude and said "theres a whole restaurant before you guys" which was just not necessary. The pizza was cold and extremely saucy and looks like it just had bagged mozzarella cheese thrown on top and a piece of basil and then they called it a margarita pizza. Our friend got a kid size pasta, and we got the regular size and the portion sizes were literally the exact same. The regular size was extremely small for the price as well. Both of the vodka sauce pastas had completely different color sauces that did not look the same at all and really just did not taste good. This dish does not taste anything like before and was really disappointing. We were extremely disappointed in our experience here and will not be coming back. read more

Searched for "pasta near me" while cruising through Encinitas, and this spot came up first. Only 7 minutes from La Costa Resort, so I gave it a try. The entrance is a little tricky (shared with Alice and Rubio--the restaurant is tucked behind them), but once inside I ordered the calamari fritte and chicken parmesan sandwich. The calamari was fried in fresh, clean oil--big win since I can always taste old oil. The chicken sandwich was crispy, perfectly toasted, and they even offered extra parmesan cheese. I was tempted to get pasta (been craving it!) but the two dishes filled me up--so pasta will have to wait for next time. For dessert, I went with the ricotta pistachio cheesecake (if I got the name right) and it was the perfect way to complete my evening.
