I have had Suburban Propane for about 5 years now only because it is a hassle to switch companies. They have been charging me $4.99 a gallon for propane for awhile until I did my research as to how much the going rate was for my area which was around $2.99 a gallon. I completely flipped out on them and when I asked to speak to a manager because the woman who answered the phone was a complete moron and couldn't answer my questions, she said hold on and then came back on the phone after a wait time of 5 mins on hold saying that the manager has agreed to lower my bill to $2.00 a gallon. I used suburban propane right before covid started. Before that I was charged when I did not need propane and felt like I was being scammed. Since then lost my job was basically homeless. could not pay the bill just like all my other bills Cause I lost my job then got covid In the hospital for a while. I was called and harassed all the time I was crying trying to explain they did not care. I was just called back today told I can pay on it in a month that was not good enough I was yelled at again and called back from them numerous times. I have never been treated so badly for something that I could not prevent. Now I'm in collections for some of the money that was added without my permission. Suburban Propane is a horrible company. They are totally inefficient and dysfunctional. I have a house in Gardiner, NY and have had nothing but problem after problem for years. They make it hard to switch service because they own the tanks and they know it's a hassle to change companies. If you're new to the area, go with someone else. Suburban is also the most expensive of all the oil/propane companies I've checked with. Whenever you call with a problem, all they do is reflect your feelings back to you and give you a litany of excuses. The one thing they're great at though, is getting the bill to you in record time. I would give a Zero if I could. Every one should report to BBB. I just got out hospital and called and told them this. Was on automatic refill. Just got home two days from hospital and no gas no heat. I called and said why no gas I just got out of hospital. No problem we can come but it a $269 charge. I was like what???? No way I paying that! They came next day and changed my card $387 not once but twice and never to this day credit me back. I sent back statements many times and still got calls and emails from them. Suburban is outrageous. They've been delivering oil to my home for 20 years (what an idiot I am) AND I have a burner contract with them. No problem finding my house for OIL DELIVERY (CHA-CHING a nice auto delivery for a $924 bill) -- but THEY could NOT find my home LAST WEEK when I need a service call. Asked the last technician in October why the cement was crumbling around the furnace - he said it "just happens over time." What I did not know -- until puddles of water started appearing -- is that the furnace was cracked and leaking. On its last leg in the middle of the coldest weather snap in 2 years. So I got a new furnace installed yesterday by a great plumber. TIME TO SWITCH. read more

I have had Suburban Propane since last summer and I have had nothing but problems with them, and I have no choice but to use them because I live in an apartment complex. First they charge a $500 deposit which is required for all people in my apartment complex, and if you don't have it, you don't get hot water or heat. It's basically a monopoly because we have no choice. Second was when I had the propane turned on in my name, I was charged for 3 days that weren't mine. Then they charged me 16 gallons for 13 days in August for my household which is only 1 adult. So basically they were saying I used 16 gallons of propane in 13 days just to take a hot shower daily. Then when I called to find out why, they said "oh our tech read it wrong, it was 8 gallons", which is weird because I've never had a reading where it was an exact number, it's always been like 5.4 or 10.3, never an exact amount. Then I told them that even 8 gallons seemed unlikely. They ended up waiving that bill (because they got caught). After that I never received a regular bill. Once I didn't get a bill for 7 weeks, then another time I got 2 in one month (which meant I paid service fees twice that month). When I called and asked what their billing/service period was I was told that it "depended on what they had going on and when they could get to me" and that it was "when they could get to it". I'm also now paying $2.93 a gallon, which is a huge spike since I got them, and I was never once informed that there would be an increase in my prices. This company should just close it's doors. We have used two different offices, one in NY and one in PA. The one in PA overcharged by $3 dollars a gallon or pound to the current rate at the time. We sold that place so we didn't have time to yank them. The Chester NY office was much worse. They filled a old no longer used tank without permission with propane. They claim to have delivered two 250 gallons of oil within a month span. When we stopped the automatic oil delivery we have only used a 100 gallons in 5 months starting in February. When we bought the place and had Suburban come check the system out the technician stated he thought there maybe a leak on the propane system but it should be ok. It was not ok, we had to have another technician come out and fix it. The final straw was when we scheduled new lines to be run to our newly renovated kitchen in which a gas fireplace and stove were going in. We had to wait one month for the propane install and when the day came to install the lines and as we waited for the technician, he called to say they don't run lines inside the house. They couldn't tell us that a month earlier when we could have planned for it. The technician even showed up almost 3 hours late to reiterate his phone call message. ZERO STARS to the worst customer service ( DEBRA, KENNY and AMANDA) money stealing company!!!!just had this company for 2 months and their service fee is ridiculous!!! The pilot went out I couldn't turn it on they had someone come to my house a week later to look at our fireplace. We had no heat for a week!!When the service guy came he told me nothing is wrong just the pilot went out. He's name was George he was super nice and showed me how to turn it on. The whole process took 20 min because he was teaching me few things I should know about. but unfortunately he said the company will be charging service fee. I was okay with the fee since he had to come all the way to my house but when the bill was 135.00!!!!! This was absolutely crazy fee!!!! Plus I found out there is 10.00 charge to fill your tank , I spoke to Amanda and see if there is any other hidden fee I should know about of course she was rude and didn't know what she was talking about. She said the charge per gallon always change for example it can be 1.59 per gallon or 1.89 per gallon or MORE?!!!! Why do we have a contract if the charge always change??!!!! I asked her couple of more questions and all I got from her was i don't know..??? Ridiculous!!!! It took them almost a week to come to my house but still they didn't give me a break and when I called for someone to come all they said was if it's ASAP it will be 175.00 charge!!!!I told them no just have someone come and they never mention about a fee for 125.00 for someone to come look at our fireplace. I found out Everytime they come it's 125.00 plus tax it will be 135.00 even if nothing was broken and if they didn't show up for over a week it's ok with them??!!!!! They don't care about customers that been waiting with NO HEAT!!!!! plus whatever they do it's Extra MORE MONEY. I asked Amanda to have someone else call me I talked to Debra very rude!!! didn't want to listen just kept saying this is the price , she said Its only 125.00 nothing is free giving me attitude..when I said what about the time I waited for someone to come without heat is that ok??!!!And no one mentioned about a fee for someone to come how is that my fault?? Suburban is a company that lies a lot and then becomes vendictive when you try to resolve a situation with them. My regulator froze on my tanks causing my furnace to go out. I had to leave work to diagnose the problem. I realized it was the regulator. I called them and they told me they would send out a tech. I confirmed with them that there would be no charge. I got my bill and received notice of a $249.99 service charge. They refused to resolve the situation. Difficult to prove because they confirmed verbally that there would be no charge. read more

If I could give Suburban Propane ZERO stars I would. We were customers of Modern Gas and Suburban Propane bought them out back around August 2013. Since then prices have increased on average $.50 a month. I called them when it went up a dollar in one month and the guy told me that was happening all across the USA, my mistake was believing him. Today's bill was $5 DOLLARS A GALLON, which I had to figure out since they never leave a bill or email one. I immediately started calling other providers in my area, the going rate for my zip code is $3.39!!!! Needless to say I will be switching providers as soon as possible. Do not use Suburban Propane if you do not wave to? They are completely unreliable. Last winter they did not fill our tank (we are on auto refill) and it went empty in the coldest day of the year in 30 years per the news reports. Our house shut down. Fortunately a friend was staying at our house (we were not there) to notice the house stopped heating up and called for emergency refill (2am and they showed up 6am). Fortunately, our pipes did not break and damage the entire house. After complaining to they them were not apologetic nor did they try to compensate us in anyway. Later in the year they also did not keep refilling the tank even when we called to let them know it was low. Avoid at all costs if you can and find another provider. As a former employee this company is the worst. I got a job here because I thought it would be a good experience and fun to have the chance to work with my father. But the management is horrendous treat good employees horribly and bad employees like gods. The plant manager constantly berates, sexually harasses the girls in the office to the point he made one of them cry. And when ever Human Resources is called not only do they do nothing but sweep it under the rug they actually right up the person who called in the first place. Though the service techs that actually know what they're doing ( my dad and man named George) the newer one are more likely to screw up because they were never trained. And every review I read on them about price and customer service is almost spot on except for one of the actual office girls Krista who knows what she's doing and is very polite and patient. I am a new customer and new to propane. So far I am very impressed with the quality of the customer service. Everyone at this office is extremely nice and helpful. The guys that came out to hook up the propane were also very nice and competent. I don't know about the prices because I haven't shopped them and I'm assuming they are priced a little higher than some other small companies and for that they will lose a star, but otherwise so far so good! read more

They are criminal! Their prices are the highest in the area and their service charges are outrageous! They said because of the size of my house (which is very small) they had to classify me as a 4 person family (for 1 person) and if I didn't meet the minimum usage for a family of 4 that I'd be charged the minimum anyway AND a penalty for not meeting the minimum. The lady in the office actually told me to bake cookies to up my usage (which would have been funny if she wasn't so snotty to start). I already knew of Suburban's reputation and to stay away but their tank was already here when I moved in so I thought I'd give them a try. When I told them to come get their tank out it took 6 MONTHS of weekly calls before they finally came. When they took it out the driver maliciously bent the line coming out out my house which would have cost me a fortune since it's so old but thankfully I found an honest company who was able to fix it for nothing when they installed my new tank. I switched last year and have calculated that I've saved at least $300 just for cooking gas! I now use a company that has honest prices and no service charges and great service. read more

AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was a customer for over 20 years, they began coming out a lot more often and putting in like $30 worth of gas and charging all these other fees for the deliveries bringing my $30 to $100, I called to explain I do not want them to come out so often as we don't use that much and they said that's their schedule. The final breaking point came the following month when I received a rental charge for having their tank. I have gone over 20 years without having a rental charge and now they wanted $75 a month to rent it. When I called to question it they said it was in the contract, funny thing is I keep all of my paperwork and had the original contract which I pulled out to show them. They said by law they can change it and that'[s our only option. I said we are cancelling come get your tank. They said no I needed to drop it off at their location or we will continue to be charged. We have been using this company since we moved into our house two years ago. They would come fill our tank, leave a bill and we would pay it off. Unannounced to us they decided to change our account to "Will Call", and did not inform us. We woke up today to a house that was 60 degrees and continually dropping. We called to see if they could service us, being that it is Sunday we figured they would charge an emergency fee. Since we were unaware that we were changed to will call we asked if the fee could be waived. We spoke to Brian in emergency service and he wasnt given permission from his manager to waive the $175 and informed us we would be required to completely fill out tank and pay over $900 upfront. Needless to say, we are stilling in our freezing home with no help from them. I think this is enough to say we are highly unsatisfied and would not recommend this company to anyone. Do your research before linking up with a propane company in your area. If there is any other options beside Suburban Propane, go elsewhere. read more

Moved into a house we bought with a propane tank. With all the chaos of settling into the new house, we didn't get around to calling about propane service until a few weeks later. When I called Suburban (spoke with Tahlia), I was informed that there should have been a lock on the tank (which there was not). Asked if I cut it off...which of course we didn't. She then said they would have to remove the tank unless we continued service. Told her that I needed to call around other companies before picking a company and would get back to her. Called back within two hours, and left a message with main call center to have Tahlia call me back. Never heard back that day. Called the next morning (today), was transferred to main call center yet again, and woman said she would have Chester call me back. Said I did that yesterday and nobody ever returned my call and said I would call back. Received a call immediately after I hung up with main call center from Tahlia. Told her we chose another provider and needed the tank removed. She said it was removed the day before (didn't think to look when we got home last night)! They didn't even notify me that they were going to be coming on my property!!! Our new tank isn't being installed for another 5 days. I understand that we were using the tank without a contract/rental agreement, but you would think that they would have some common courtesy to notify us that they were going to be removing it! The company I was with for years, locally owned, was bought by Suburban and that was the start of the problems. For two years I had to call and renegotiate the price with every fill up. They were always $1.50 to $2.50 over the other local suppliers. With my last fill up they charged $4.85/gal in Feb. 2017. I made my usual call and was told if I didn't like the price they could come and pick up the tank. After contracting with another supplier for $1.90/gal. I told them to come and get their tank. They did come and get the tank but charged me $40.00 to get it, plus they charged me additional trumped up charges so that the credit for the propane that I owned that was in the tank was far less than it should have been.
