Today, I spent some time clearing out my father's home and helping my nephew, who'd been staying with him prior to his death, settled in a new residential situation. As I was driving through Danville on the way home, I stopped at the town square and decided to have a late lunch in the area. To be honest, I headed first to Square Burger. However, as a wheelchair user I was dismayed to see a step into their establishment. No go. I wasn't in the mood for Mayberry Cafe despite my love for the place. I looked over and realized this was a great chance to check out The Beehive. The Beehive is just off the square and shares a building with Two Guys Pies. The US 36 entrance is not wheelchair friendly, however, the back entrance has a nice concrete ramp (I did find the sidewalk a bit narrow - I noticed as I entered here that had I desired to visit Two Guys Pies there was a bicycle on the sidewalk that would have easily blocked my access). This is an attractive building. The Beehive has been here a little over 10 years. I'm not sure I'll describe The Beehive accurately - it's sort of a coffeehouse meets breakfast/lunch joint where you can also get fresh, local honey and other frozen goods to take out. They do catering and offer deli sandwiches, beer/wine carryout, a build your own salad menu, local meat and produce, and the aforementioned frozen goods. They also have a small retail area where you can buy honey, t-shirts, and other items. A good amount of their sweets utilize honey instead of sugar. I parked on the square in one of their accessible spots (parking is free, up to 5 hours for accessible parking but only two hours for others). I wheeled around the building - someone was planting plants/flowers and was super friendly and stopped his work to make sure I could get through). They close at 4pm on Saturdays - I arrived about 3ish. I ordered one of their combos that included a 1/2 sandwich, chips, and a drink. They do have unsweetened iced tea, fountain drinks, and a variety of canned/bottled drinks (including Choc-ola!). They also have a ton of coffee/latte type options. I found the prices to be reasonable. This is especially true given these are healthier options (though certainly not everything here qualifies as "healthy."). The employees were friendly. They were quiet, however, service was quite good. I loved the atmosphere. I had zero issues finding a wheelchair friendly table. I could independently reach everything I needed, though I'm sure they'd have assisted if needed. This wasn't a mind-blowing experience. It was simply a really good lunch in a pleasing atmosphere at a fair price. After an emotional experience like clearing out my family home (which isn't yet done), this was a great way to relax and calm the emotions. I enjoyed the sandwich, which is toasted, and they had Miss Vickie's potato chips. I'm not sure why it took me so long to stop here, however, I'd easily return for the simple yet wonderful menu, great drinks, warm atmosphere, and friendly employees.

It's very cool on the inside with vintage and Indiana-themed decor, tin ceilings, and, of course, a potbelly stove. The staff were friendly. But brother and I were very confused about the ordering process. There wasn't a lot of directional signage showing where to start and each step of the process. I watched a few other customers go through and they didn't seem like they had a problem so maybe it was just us. Next time I would probably just order online and pick it up so I could avoid the in-person ordering process altogether. I had the turkey sandwich and it was pretty good. I would say definitely a step up from your typical sub sandwich chain in terms of flavor and toppings options. I tried the chili mac as well. The chili is definitely à la Wendy's but I enjoyed it. The mac and cheese was good as well. I'd probably get either on its own but not together again. I also tried the Potbelly/Zapp's collab chips, the Hot Pepper flavor. They were good but are definitely not for everyone. When I visited, most of their fountain soda options were out of order so I settled on a no sugar added Pineapple Passionfruit juice/soda which was actually pretty good. We'll definitely be back - especially to try out their milkshakes!

Thus, I'm also trying to snag a few more reviews before my life returns to a bit more normalcy. I'd been curious about Danville's Two Guys Pies, a sister restaurant to The Beehive located in the same two-storefront strip center at the corner of Main Street and Indiana Street. Parking is a little tight here in a parking lot behind the restaurants. There are a couple accessible spots including one with a small aisle to allow for safe exit for wheelchairs. The parking spot is directly across from the building and there's a pretty good concrete ramp. I have noted there are times when longer vehicles block the somewhat narrow sidewalk just a bit. The last time I came to this building, I went to The Beehive and looked down and realized that Two Guys Pies would have been blocked had I wanted to go there. There's a couple glass doors. The dining room includes a bar area, a handful of traditional tables, and a few more booths. I really only saw a couple smaller tables (which I tend to take since I'm often dining alone), however, I was able to snag one. Two Guys Pies obviously specializes in pizza, however, they definitely have a more extensive menu. They advertise having the best salad bar in Hendricks County. There are appetizers, wings, sandwiches, wraps, pasta, calzones, rollers, bombs (I will admit I have no idea what bombs are), a kids menu, daily specials, family specials, and more. There's also lunch specials from 11am-2pm. I ordered a 7" pepperoni pizza (essentially a create-your-own option) along with two breadsticks along with unsweetened iced tea. The breadsticks came with cheese (I don't know if marinara was an option - this was delivered automatically). The pizza was definitely a thin crust. It was quite good and I would easily order it again. The menu says it comes with eight slices - just be aware it is only a 7" pizza. Those "slices"are smaller. The breadsticks were good, though I'm not sure I'd order them again at $2.99. You can order larger quantities. The service was welcoming. I enjoyed watching the atmosphere. It's clear it was a mixture of regulars and some maybe not so much so. The servers seemed relaxed with the customers. I liked that one older customer dining alone, in particular, seemed to get some definite human connection. The dining room has large windows. There are five widescreen televisions - all were showing sports, though there was some variation. I enjoyed this experience. You could also easily park at the town square and make it the one block east to Two Guys Pies. Service was great, the food was good, the prices were fair, the atmosphere was welcoming (though at least two kids acted like they'd never seen a wheelchair or an amputee before) and I'd easily return. While my time in Hendricks County is winding down, at a hard time in my life after my father's death I've enjoyed getting to know this small town a whole lot more.

The menu hangs above cases of fried chicken, fish and potato wedges. Gizzards are a popular menu item. Chris takes your order. My husband wants a 3-piece chicken meal with cole slaw. I select a Buffalo chicken wrap that comes with fries. Ricardo, Chris' son, comes out and asks how spicy hot I want my chicken and I ask for mild. Wow, what great service! They tell us to grab some drinks and have a seat. The dining area is small with three or four tables that seat two. Most people come in for carry out. Chris laughs and jokes with a customer in Spanish as he cooks. I sip mango nectar. My husband's 3-piece meal has four pieces of fried chicken with a cup of cole slaw. The chicken is hot, crispy and moist, not too salty, perfect. The fried batter is thick and flavorful. This is great fried chicken. The slaw is finely chopped and creamy. My wrap with fries comes out on a beautiful white platter. The wrap is huge, and the chicken fresh, hot and moist with lots of crispy lettuce. The fries are batter fried and fresh. The portions are generous. My meal was delicious. Ricardo and his sister checked on us a couple times, thanked us for coming and told us their story. I felt like family. We split a bowl of soup and they kindly served it in separate bowls for us, which I appreciated. The soup of the day was corn chowder and wow, I was surprised how good it was, I do love soups. I'd never tried corn chowder before, but it was creamy, flavorful, and comforting. I ordered the half salad/half sandwich combo. The smoked salmon niçoise salad had a blend of interesting flavors and the dressing paired perfectly with it. For the sandwich, I chose the BLTEA, and unfortunately this was the disappointing part of the meal. The avocado on it was clearly overripe/bad, so dark, mushy, and it gave the sandwich an unpleasant taste. I removed as much as I could, but it still affected the flavor. It was a bummer because this spot usually tastes very fresh. I've had it before and the avocado was fresh, along with the orchard salad which I loved. I would say the orchard salad is my fave. They make their dressings homemade and the dressing for the orchard salad was delicious. The service was still very friendly, and since they were slammed busy, I didn't feel like making a fuss about it. Everything else we had was enjoyable. The inside is small and quaint since it's a house turned restaurant, so it has a cozy but lively ambiance when crowded. One of the best perks here is definitely the made from scratch desserts. I love checking out the dessert case because the staff will happily explain each option and answer questions. There's something oddly satisfying about watching them slice the desserts too. I took a lemon cheesecake to go and absolutely loved it. I've also tried the blackberry wine cake which is a staple and delicious. A seasonal dessert that was really good was the pumpkin pie. You really can't go wrong with home made desserts here.
