    Tarako (Codroe) Chazuke
    Jadis H.

I love the chazuke and recommend it if you are looking for something warm and soupy, but not too heavy on a cold day. You'll receive a teapot with broth to pour over a bowl of rice with your choice of protein, such as salmon or cod roe, with bits of radish and seaweed. This is also my second time coming back for their dessert. There is a cup of hojicha served with the hojicha pudding, and a cup of green tea with the green tea cream pudding. It's not too sweet, the teas complement its counterpart very well and is overall super delicious :3

Preserved menu board and booth from Suehiro's original Little Tokyo location.

Bummed that Suehiro is over in the Old Bank District now...damn gentrifiers kicking longtime tenants out of Little Tokyo...but am glad to hear they've recently signed a lease with the Little Tokyo Service Center to return to their historic roots. That being said, like Kouraku over on 2nd Street, Suehiro was founded in the 1970s and has long been a neighborhood favorite for its post-war, pre-bubble, Showa-era aesthetic and fare. You're not coming here for California Rolls or ramen (which they offer, but that's not what they specialize in), but the dishes Japanese people consider comfort food...curry, oyakodon, tonkatsu, and reasonably priced box lunches. It's the type of working-class food one would associate with any solid small town diner, except in Japan...and if that's what you're looking for, I generally prefer Suehiro to its longtime competitor, Kouraku. Kenji, the son of the original owner and current proprietor is a staunch supporter of the community, having grown up on the streets of Little Tokyo, and along with Brian over at Fugetsu-Do, Ryusei at Mr. Ramen, and Philip at Azay are all second and third generation business owners that have been manning the barricades against gentrification and need our support! As you can tell from the businesses I tend to praise here on Yelp...I've long been a proponent of supporting locally owned businesses whose owners are active in the local community and reinvest in little league teams and donate to local schools, it's more important than ever to shop and eat local, and to stop offshoring our hard earned dollars to out-of-state corporations who take our money and pay for space tourism or supporting policies god knows what and where.

    Broiled Saba

I was craving Japanese comfort food for lunch yesterday since it was cold and rainy. Suehiro was a convenient option nearby, and most reviews spoke highly of their rice bowls and Japanese grilled fish set meals. My cousin and I were able to make a reservation very easily through Yelp. We were seated immediately upon arrival and placed our order soon after. Our meals came with miso soup, which was simple and clean-tasting, like most restaurant miso soups tend to be. BROILED SABA - 18.50 This was a set meal that came with a generous portion of broiled saba, rice, and a variety of side dishes. The saba was lightly seasoned with salt, and the skin was nicely crisped from the fish's natural oil. The side dishes were pretty solid, but nothing mind-blowing. I liked how homey this set meal was, rather than overly restaurant-style. My cousin got the sukiyaki, which was rich and slightly sweet with an abundant of toppings. I'd definitely consider getting that next time. Overall, the service was fast and hospitable, and the food was comforting and satisfying. The menu is quite extensive, so there's much more to try, and pricing is pretty reasonable for downtown LA.

Came here late night and it was a great option since not many solid spots are open that late. Ended up getting the soba set and overall it was really solid. The food hit the spot and portions were satisfying. Service was quick and servers came to check on us periodically. Location is pretty central in Downtown LA, which made it convenient, though the surrounding neighborhood felt a little rough at night. I opted for garage parking for peace of mind, while my friend found street parking. We also got the spicy tuna crispy rice appetizer, which was good -- nice crunch, flavorful, and a solid way to start the meal. Prices felt moderate for the area and portion size. Overall, a dependable late-night spot in DTLA when you want something warm and satisfying.

Real Japanese staff and greeting upon entrance! You can practice your Japanese! The service was too notch, standard for Japanese attention! I'm so grateful to have this new place in the neighborhood! The sushi was delicious! I love their crispy rice tuna, they put a jalapeño and avocado slice on top! The ramen is official, I got the tonkotsu! It's a smaller version but I like having to order a lot of different stuff! The gyoza was delicious, I can't wait to try more of their extensive menu! My friend got sashimi, and then got jealous and order a ramen like mine! lol They have a full bar and the wine was good too! The hot tea came with two tea bags, good enough to share and add more hot water if needed! This will be a regular weekly dining option for this single lady! Loved, Love, Lovely!

BEST service, and the owner is so sweet! We've been coming here for lunch or breakfast and love it. Reliable, yummy comfort food and lots of it for the price. The location is also right across from my favorite vintage store as well!!! Definitely on my restaurant rotation.

Came with a friend on a holiday and was able to find street parking easily. Not sure if that's the norm as I tend to avoid DTLA which is known for bad parking. I've been to the original location many years ago and I was excited to support the business in their new location. Interior was great! Nice and clean and I loved sitting in the cute booth. Food (3/5) I was pleased by the depth of flavor in the sukiyaki, however the beef was very overcooked and the broth was extremely salty. The broth itself was great but could just have used some extra water or less salt. The veggies were also a little overcooked for my liking as well making them extra salty from the broth. Service (4/5) We arrived at 12:30 and although the place was mostly empty, it still took a while for them to bring us water and take our order. We also never were offered water refills. Service was still friendly and people were kind. Overall, I still have a soft spot for Suehiro but will try other menu items next time!

I love going for late night meals and snacks, especially when I feel like reading and doing some work. The staff is always pleasant and friendly. Suehiro has a good history in Little Tokyo since its opening in 1972, and they are one of the oldest legacy restaurants in the area. Sadly, a few years ago, the landlords were unwilling to honor the five decades in Little Tokyo and had raised rents and driven them out. However, due to the loyalty and love of the community and organizations like Little Tokyo Service Center, they will return to Little Tokyo. Prior to the move from the first street location, I remember it being like a time capsule, an old diner with fluorescent lights, photos on the wall about its past, and handwritten signs. The Downtown location is a few blocks from Little Tokyo in Historic DTLA on the corner of 4th & Main St. Reborn in a modern downtown space, they blend the industrial textures with contemporary warmth. There's a lot on the menu. Japanese comfort food. Curry. Hamburger. Yakatori on Tuesdays. Ramen and udon. Sushi and sashimi. Teriyaki. Rice bowls. Omurice on Mondays is something I have yet to try. If you can afford the extra egg on the dishes, it's probably a good idea.

Clockwise- white rice, cold tofu, natto, miso soup, omelette.

I had never been here, but saw Kenji's videos about his weekend breakfasts, and had to check Suehiro out. The space is well lit, bright, and welcoming. Not only is Kenji the nicest person, but the food was AMAZING! I had the omelette, as well as the natto, chawanmushi, tofu, rice, and miso soup. It's SOOO much food I had breakfast the next day too! For $5 more, you can have a great variety of unlimited tea, and he brings out a selection of mochi you can purchase as well. I can't wait to come back, and again to try the lunch/dinner as well. Very highly recommended!

Super cute restaurant with awesome ambiance. Food was delicious and service was great. Came by after a concert and the restaurant had a pretty decent crowd. Wasn't empty but wasn't super packed. We ordered the Sukiyaki which was DELECTABLE and an equally good Takoyaki and Agedashi Tofu. Honestly still thinking about the Tofu. The rice flour shell for it was so crispy and the tofu was super silky. Flavor was incredible. Definitely will be coming back here. This was one of the most memorable restaurants and meals for our staycation. Overall rating: Food: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Menu: 10/10 Restaurant Vibes: 10/10 Price to Overall Dining (POD): 10/10

I have been here twice now and want to keep coming back to try the entire menu! The food is always fresh and is very delicious. I have had their udon and cold soba which were flavorful. Each time I've been, staff has been very welcoming. I recommend this place and will be back to try the rest of the menu. The restaurant is very welcoming and modern. I especially like sitting at the booths and watching out the windows.

WOW! Such a hidden gem! I got the cold dipping noodles and the salmon bowl and it was SOOO refreshing and extremely good. The salmon bowl has a bit of wasabi marinated tho so I would be careful if you can't eat spicy. Servers were great and the place looks like you're in an actual Japanese restaurant. SOOO COOLLL!! Would come back 100%

Ambiance: it's located on the corner spot on main street, stylish decorations inside, sofa and regular seats and bar tables available, they also have an outdoor patio area Service: very friendly and patient with questions, although it's hard to get attention from servers, and they tend to be very busy during rush hours Food: variety choices on their regular menu, and they have seasonal items and lunch specials HAYASHI RICE - **** their signature cooked beef stew with rice, and the Hayashi sauce contains beef, onion, tomato and mushroom, tender beef and rich in flavors, recommend Miso Soup - *** served with most set menu, average taste Price: moderate portions and reasonable prices, expect $25+ per person for a comfort meal

Back in the days there was Curry House but sadly they are all gone now. Coco is basically the last one standing. My go to order is the pork cutlet omelet rice with curry. The egg is fluffy and the pork katsu is crunchy, meaty and juicy. I order the level 6 spicy which is just enough spicy to give it a kick. The gravy like curry has hint of spices, sweetness and smooth finish. Each order is just the right amount of food. The Japanese pickles give the dish a nice crunch and you can add as much as you want. This location is in Sawtelle so make sure to check out the dessert spots nearby after your meal. I usually park by the Marshalls which has 2 hour free parking.

Sawtelle and Ktown (the 2 locations closest to me) are both out of the way + traffic so I haven't actually had Coco Ichibanya in ages. Pork cutlet omelet curry ($18.25)-- Tastes comforting, homey... everything you want Japanese curry to be. The katsu is not exactly dry but not super juicy either? Can't beat the ones at tonkatsu places but it works as a topping for curry. The omelet was thin and wasn't anything spectacular so I wouldn't get the egg again. This place is known for its customization potential. Pick your rice portion, spice level, toppings etc... buuuut be warned that it can come with a pretty steep price tag. It'll add up pretty quick. The pickles on the table are great!! Goes soooo well with curry and helps cut the fatty/greasy feeling. Or if you're starting to get tired of the taste, have more pickles! The chili powder is good too. Tip-- FREE PARKING!! Just follow the signs for restaurant parking. The entrance is around the corner + drive 1 min further down. There's a ramp to enter. Take the elevator up and you'll be where the restaurants are. They'll validate the parking slip. To get down, just go back to the same elevator (insert slip to scan or else elevator button won't work). Japanese curry is just one of things you have to be in the mood for. If you're craving then this will definitely be the spot for you. Otherwise it'll be kinda meh so just depends on you! Free parking in this area is a great bonus though.

Service was well paced with the first course arriving in a few minutes followed by the main. We didn't have high expectations for the cold tofu and okra but it was delicious and the tofu soaked up the soy based sauce and was balanced by the slight crunchiness of the okra. The waffle fries were exceptional - double fried with a curry aioli sauce. The tonkatsu and ramen were also great. The tonkatsu had a light, crispy batter and the ramen was so delicious, with the addition of corn, peas, black fungus and bamboo shoots, truly comforting. The burger was a hit, too. Juicy and flavorful. The small details here didn't go unnoticed, the unique plates, nice bamboo chopsticks and cute hippo candy plate. We chose to sit in front by the open windows since it was such a nice afternoon but the dining area further inside was welcoming, too. Update- was really looking forward to dinner at Chubby Curry. My friends and I have patronized this…read moreplace since it opened. It was our go-to place for almost two years. We hadn't been in about 6 months and decided to drop in for dinner before a movie- Wow, has it changed- and not in a good way. There were fewer staff and they were spread thin, with not even half the tables full. The place was a little unkept. The menu is all digital- so we had some questions ordering our favorites. We got the Wagu steak with rice and curry and the breaded chicken breast. When the Wagu arrived it was unrecognizable- brown and looked over cooked - no pink. The entire dish was completely unappetizing. It was sad looking. I tried to show the server that this looked nothing like the menu photos in the front wall. He was already flustered and told me "to calm down ma'am" and that is "how it comes- we put soy sauce on it." The calm down nonsense was a real put off. My next question was, why is a restaurant putting soy sauce on perfect Wagu? None of the menu photos show soy sauce. We have never had soy sauce drenched Wagu here ever. The amount of soy sauce - if any-- is up to the guest. We all have our sodium preferences, right? I personally liked their Wagu plate as is. I tried to get the server to follow me to the front wall to show him the photo of all their Wagu dishes on their front wall and he was really not happy. Those photos were how their food always looked- fresh- colorful and delicious looking. The comparison was stunningly different- he would not hear it - and was visible upset with me. Sending this back caused quite a problem- more like an argument with the server who insisted this is how Wagu comes. It does not and I posted a review previously with photos from several visits to this once fun to eat at place. They offered to remake it and I caught the server and chef's convo. Chef was bewildered with the whole no soy sauce thing. The server came back with a small piece of Wagu in a service cup to show me what their Wagu looked like before the soy sauce bath. It was not the bright fresh pink. It was gray, like it had been prepped a couple days ago and refrigerated. Completely unacceptable and not appetizing. I told them to please not remake it. It would be a waste and please Just remove it and we'd order something else. The server was so upset with me he told me he would remove everything and not charge us at all. I felt that was unfair to the restaurant and his attitude was like don't order anything, and do not come back. My guy friend insisted that we pay and the server came back with a bill for just the chicken. I gave him cash for everything we ordered including the Wagu, and he brought me almost all the money back. I was particularly insulted by this. This was such negative energy- I did not want to touch it. I left all the money on the table and left. Message to the owner- replacing servers with digital menus does not lessen their work. it increases their time explaining what dishes are and how dishes come. You need more people because servers have more work in less time. I really felt for this server and did not feel any of this was his fault. The quality drop in food, the excess work due to digital menus, and food not matching the promises made in photos at the front wall from opening day are not your server's fault. We were expecting the same consistency and were sadly disappointed. We will not be returning.

I really like the texture of their pork. And the tonkatsu sauce flavor is SPOT ON, which is very important! My sister LOVES the corn soup. It IS tasty, and so is the miso soup. I also like the salad dressing that comes with the side salad for an entree. For me, tasty salad dressing is a must or I won't eat salad! A paired with some super super soft bread? That's a combo that will win me over any time. Don't forget to add their sauces! Fruit sando is a MUST if you're missing Japan. Sour strawberries paired with sweet cream, what's not to love? Egg salad sando- this one was delicious but maybe I could skip on it, I wish the egg salad was just a bit creamier. Menchi Katsu plate- portion size was crazy first of all. The burger was nice and crisp on the outside, and tender within. Seems like there is a common theme with their meats here. The service was also amazing and the cashier is super friendly. I wish there was more seating ! But it's a small quaint spot, so I kinda get it. Definitely wouldn't go with a party bigger than 4 people if you all want to sit together.

Despite only having one person working, the food came out pretty quick and it was delicious. Also the fries are a must have, especially with the curry. Overall, really good curry spot so definitely give it a try!!

There is a QR code at the register for you to order yourself. The worker there did not give me any direction on whether I should order myself or he could take my order. It was not busy and it took a few minutes of me trying to get the online order to work for him to ask me to take my order. I ordered the Spicy Grilled Vegetable Curry Rice ($15.50). The curry was not spicy at all. It was the same non-spicy level Original curry that my father-in-law ordered. They either gave me the Original or their Spicy and Original mean nothing. The portion was small for what it was and my curry was mildly warm. The curry flavor was not bad, but I wouldn't come here again for it. I get that this is downtown Pasadena where quality is not reflected in their prices, but dang, I felt ripped off. There used to be a Champion's Curry in Irvine and it was far better compared to this one. Sadly, I won't be returning and I can't recommend this place to anyone.
