I don't know why I thought this would work, but it was pre-COVID during AX, but we were under the impression that if we left the PvP zone of Little Tokyo and ate in K-town instead, we would avoid the crowds. What a mistake that was! Not only was there AX crowds there craving the classic taste of Japanese curry from the CocoIchi franchise (especially with the food ecological niche of Curry House being gone), but the regular weekend crowds were there too. Super packed and it's not the biggest restaurant either, so it was a bit awkward loitering around in the waiting area/half outside. But at least we were dropped off by an Uber so we didn't have to deal with how bad Ktown parking and traffic can get. It took awhile, again, since it was busy, but we were able to be seated. Very busy and loud inside, given the circumstances of our visit, but it's a casual sit down restaurant so no biggie. What I like about all CocoIchi franchises is that if you drive up the heat high enough, it's actually spicy unlike other Japanese franchises/restaurants and usually, if I want a good kick and slow burn without forgoing flavor, I'll do around a 5-6 level spicy. It does get pricy, especially since it's literally priced by add-ons, but it's slightly cheaper (a couple cents) if you get a smaller portion of rice, thus giving more of a chance to enjoy the curry and have your toppings absorb the curry sauce. My go to are usually either the spicy teriyaki chicken (if I get this I won't get any other protein) or the thinly sliced beef or minced beef cutlet. I also love their vegetable cream croquette and if I'm feeling really hungry, then I'll make it an omelet. With all these customizations though, you're looking at potentially $25+ per person just an FYI. Overall not bad, just not a location I'd go out of my way for. read more

The food here is good, but the service today was some of the worst I've experienced. A female staff member with brown dyed hair (today - January 18 - in the afternoon) was incredibly rude and unprofessional. We had to ask for everything multiple times, and she seemed more interested in giving us attitude than helping us pay our bill and leave. I've worked in customer service myself, so I understand being busy, but there is no excuse for a total lack of communication and a bad demeanor. She didn't apologize for the wait or even speak when dropping off the bill. If you work in this industry, you have to do your part for the business. The management needs to retrain this specific floor staff immediately. I have never had a food service staff in my life (and I travel a lot) give you a bill with attitude when you are just trying to pay your bill. Honestly, if I was the manager - I will sit her down and give her feedback. She needs attitude change. I have also visited Coco Ichibanya in other countries and the multiple times I have visited especially the ones in Japan - they have taken customer service with a great care which is part of their culture. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the curry here. I would recommend the omelette curry. I tried it with both the pork cutlet and chicken cutlet. The pork cutlet was way better than the chicken. The curry had the perfect thickness and texture, while the egg was nice and soft. Everything is very customizable, but it costs extra to add more spiciness and toppings. I would just stick with the regular or mild spiciness level because the level 1 spiciness was already too spicy for me. The mild level is not spicy at all. At each table, there is a container of pickled daikon radish that you can have with your food. I love adding lots of it in my curry for the crunch. The baked keema cheese french fries was a very good side dish to share. It was loaded with flavor and served hot and crispy. You can ask for free 2 hour parking validation. Japanese curry is one of my favorite foods. Which is perhaps why I was slightly disappointed by my meal. It wasn't BAD, it just wasn't what I was hoping for. Japanese curry is very much a comfort food for me. I almost always get chicken katsu curry, which is basically a Japanese take on fried chicken and gravy. So, fairly simple, but delicious. However, there were a few things that were lacking. First, the curry sauce was on the runny side. I'm accustomed to a thicker, more robust sauce. The flavor also wasn't quite as intense or umami as I have found at other Japanese curry places. On the other hand, the service was excellent. I think I got my order in about five minutes. And I did like the fact that the pickled vegetables were on the table (along with a spice to give the curry a kick.) Did I leave the restaurant full? Absolutely. Would I go again?
