A great spot near the Crypto.com arena! Despite the line, we put in our orders at the counter and got a table fairly quickly. We shared the dan dan noodles, the 3 cup Jidori chicken, pan-fried pork buns, and cucumber salad. I also got the soy milk, which I believe is made in-house. The food came pretty quickly and arrived before our drinks, in fact. The cucumber salad was fresh, and the cucumbers had a nice crunch. I liked the flavor of the chicken, but I thought it a bit on the dry side. The dan dan noodles and pork buns were excellent, however. The noodles were flavorful and had an enjoyable chew. The pork buns were tasty as well and filled with juicy meat. I also really liked the soy milk. It wasn't too sweet, and it had a nice thickness. The staff was friendly. You order at the counter before finding a table, which made everything feel efficient and relaxed. We ordered the pork belly bun, Taiwanese popcorn chicken, pan-fried pork buns, beef noodle soup, and Hakka mochi. The MVP of the meal was undoubtedly the Taiwanese popcorn chicken. It was honestly better than many versions I've had in Taiwan, and I've had plenty. The chicken was crispy and crunchy without being greasy, and the meat stayed juicy rather than drying out. If you come here, order this. The pork belly bun was my personal favorite. The braised pork belly practically melted in my mouth, and everything was seasoned beautifully. Simple, balanced, and incredibly satisfying. The pan-fried pork buns were the only disappointment. The filling felt underseasoned, and the bottoms lacked the crispy crust I was hoping for. They were fine, but not something I would order again. The beef noodle soup was solid. The broth was excellent, with a depth of flavor and spice profile that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, the beef shank was overcooked and a bit too dry (乾) for my liking. For dessert, we had the Hakka mochi. It was served warm, pleasantly chewy, and not overly sweet. It was a nice way to end the meal and made me curious to try some of their other desserts next time. This was overall a fantastic meal. Was such excited to try their Taiwanese food and overall it was really good. There was mix of well priced items and others that felt expensive. It is self-seating so you'll place the number on your table. They offer some utensils at the tables but it is also self service so you can get your own bowl, plates, utensils and water. FOOD I came with a large group so we ordered a good number of dishes. All the dishes were delicious, flavorful and above and beyond for what I find it to be more a fusion-Asian restaurant. Below are the dishes I tried, ordered from best to worst. Wok tossed basil eggplant ($16) : 5/5 my favorite dish. Don't think about it--just go to this place. The food is incredible. When you walk in, you order at the front and can either take it to go or grab a seat inside. The process is super easy, and they have food runners bringing everything out while you wait. Our food came out pretty quickly, and you could tell it was freshly made. Our favorites were the beef roll, fried chicken, and pork buns. If I had to pick just one, the beef roll is IT. The rice wrapper has the perfect crunch, and the cucumber salad that comes with it was SO good. I'm not even a big cucumber fan, but this changed my mind. I have been here more times than I can count now. Whenever I have friends or family in town staying in DTLA I always take them here. Pine and Crane is the sister restaurant to Joy on York, which is one of my all time favorites. I think I still personally love Joy more for their thousand layer pancakes, which Pine and Crane doesn't serve. They serve the same Dan Dan noodles and Mapo tofu though and those are both amazing. The one big difference here are the crispy rice cakes and mushrooms. Now those were probably the best NEW thing I had (the Dan Dan are amazing at here and Joy). These were really great though and would come back for them. I also tried to three cup chicken and the Taiwanese sticky rice. Those were both pretty good. Had a long layover in LA after my flight to San Francisco got canceled, so instead of sitting at the airport for 6+ hours, I decided to finally check out Pine & Crane in DTLA. It's been sitting on my saved list for a while, and honestly, this turned out to be the perfect opportunity. The space itself is bright, clean, and welcoming with warm woody tones throughout. Casual setup where you order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. I had already looked through the menu beforehand, so the real challenge was narrowing down what to order for one person. I failed at that... and I'm very happy I did. Started with the Pig Ear Salad 滷豬耳朵. Braised thin sliced pig ears dressed with soy sauce, chili oil, sesame oil, scallion, and cilantro. OMG. So good. Tender, flavorful, perfectly braised, with that satisfying chewy texture done right. Also got the Fried Peanut Salad 五味花生 with garlic, cilantro, scallions, vinegar, and Thai chili. Super crunchy, bright, refreshing, and honestly addicting. I added a cup of the Hot & Sour Soup 酸辣湯 too. Organic tofu, beech mushroom, carrot, bamboo, woodear mushroom, and egg. Super comforting with a really balanced tang and peppery heat. Not overly thick or heavy like a lot of Americanized versions can be. Exactly the kind of soup you want during a long travel day. For noodles, I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles 擔擔麵. Sesame-peanut sauce, cucumber, cilantro, crushed peanuts. Delicious on its own already, but I ended up adding some of the fried peanuts from the salad into the noodles and it became even better. Then the Three Cup Chicken 三杯雞 with sesame oil, soy sauce, rice wine, and Thai basil. I do wish it had a little more wok hei, but overall the flavor was still really comforting and savory. Extremely good with rice. Had a glass of Gewürztraminer alongside everything, which paired surprisingly well with the spice and aromatics. Their wine list leans more organic / natural wine focused, which felt very LA in a good way. Ended up sitting at a high top next to one of the managers and had a great conversation throughout the meal. She ended up hooking me up with the Traditional Shaved Ice 傳統刨冰 with grass jelly, red bean, boba, sweet potato balls, taro balls, brown sugar syrup, and condensed milk. I was already planning to order it anyway, and wow... I finished the entire thing. The brown sugar syrup was incredibly fragrant. The service is very friendly and helpful, which is not a surprise. Came here with a couple of friends for dinner. Same style of ordering as their other locations. Order off the menu at the front counter and grab your beverages and they bring you your food or other beverages if needed. We ended up ordering to share family style. We got shrimp wontons, a beef roll, cucumber salad, beef noodle soup, popcorn chicken, and a sauteed eggplant dish. Not sure if we just ordered really well or if we were really hungry, but every dish was delicious and really hit the spot. I ordered a few things initially so we could get a table, then went back to order more. They specialize in Taiwanese dishes, but they're served as small, shareable plates, kind of like tapas. My wife had been craving the three-cup chicken, so I ordered that and the shrimp wontons, which are also good. I wish I had checked if the wontons were spicy, especially since my son was with us, but they were only mildly spicy, which he enjoyed. I'm not sure why though but for some reason, I'm getting a gentrified type of vibe here, as I do many times when I dine out in DTLA however haha. What a little gem this restaurant is! After a long day at LA Comic Con, we were beat down tired and had a hankering for Taiwanese food. Instead of driving there, we opted to Uber instead which was a smart decision, as there is only DTLA street parking available to the public. There was quite a long line but it went fairly quickly and we were seated in about 25 minutes. Yes! Note: the restaurant is fairly small, so if you plan on arriving with a large group, it could take longer to get seated. There is outdoor seating though. How it works: you order what you want and pay for your meal before getting seated so make sure you peruse the menu in line while you wait. Just so you're warned, these are small plates. Here's what we had: -Wonton Noodle Soup: it was a bit of a blistery day so this was perfect to warm us up! Shrimp wontons, baby bok choy, flavorful broth and noodles. Yum. -Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken: this was our fave. Jidori chicken, crispy thai basil. It tasted rather bland, but I could tell the food and produce in it was fresh. The noodles got cold almost instantly; I think it's because of the cucumber. Maybe if this dish was spicy it could be better? I just didn't like it Shrimp wonton -- 4/10. This dish wasn't much better :( It was also lackluster. It felt like it was missing salt and some other kind of flavor that I couldn't put my finger on. It was bland. Lovely and spacious eatery serving some of my favorite Taiwanese dishes! I was in LA for the weekend and came here for brunch since it was just a short walk from the hotel. As I arrived, I realized that it was still early and only the breakfast menu was available, which was fine cuz I enjoy Taiwanese breakfast very much. Ordered savory soy milk, rice ball, egg pancake with cheese, and pan fried pork buns for my family to share. We enjoyed almost everything. Have to say though, wished that the Chinese donut was more crunchy inside the rice ball, and more filling in the rice ball as well. Otherwise, everything else was on point. Lastly I want to praise the service staff who went the extra mile and gave us an extra cup of soy milk that she had the kitchen warmed up, after I mentioned to her the supposedly hot soy milk was lukewarm. I've been here a few times, and each time has been wonderful. I'm a big fan of the popcorn chicken and minced pork on rice--very straightforward dishes, no surprises, which is my style. Waiting times depend. I've been here at different times of day, lunch, and dinner. Most of my experiences, it can get a little hectic. The wait for tables, etc. It's street parking and can be difficult to find, depending on the day and time. read more
