We were craving some Taiwanese food and decided to stop by Saturday morning. There was a short line as we arrived, because they were transitioning from their breakfast to lunch menu. We were greeted by a friendly hostess who took our order and told us to look for any spot we'd like. The Dan Dan noodles came out quick and was delicious. The noodles had a nice chewy texture and the thick peanut sauce and chili oil that coated it made it super scrumptious. The freshness of the cucumber and herbs cutting through the rich sauce balanced it out. The pan fried pork buns however were rather forgettable. The meat was juicy but I was left wanting more flavour in both the meat and the buns. I also wish the bottoms were a bit crispier. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to try their breakfast menu and other items though. Because peeking at the other tables they offerings looked delicious. read more

I was in LA for a work conference, and my colleague and I decided to come here on a double date one evening with our spouses. This place came highly recommended online, and I can see why! First of all, the vibes are sooooo good! From the dope music to the staff, I felt at home walking in the door. I love how the restaurant has an open air feel to it, where even when sitting inside, you're also right next to the outdoor spaces. I ended up sharing the Taiwanese popcorn chicken with my husband and ordered the wonton noodle soup. The soup was pretty good and fresh, but popcorn chicken stole the show! Just delicious. I have been to this Pine & Crane location countless times, and I would summarize it as an incredible value for the quality of food. If you're looking for an inexpensive, but also tasty, Taiwanese menu, this spot is it. I've been coming here for years, when I'm in town, and I've never had a bad experience yet. It's casual, food comes out quick, there is still and sparkling on tap, and prices are great! I've tried most things on both the breakfast and lunch/dinner menu, and not many things miss. The vibe inside was very clean and modern, making a comfy atmosphere in the daytime. I got the hot soy milk, the Dan Bing (egg crepe), and the daikon rice cakes. The hot soy milk was fine, it came in a mug (I was expecting a bowl). It also doesn't have the strong soy milk flavor I like. The daikon rice cakes were soft and crispy, and came with a soy sauce and spicy sauce. The Dan Bing was the highlight of the meal! The skin was freshly made, the texture was perfect, and it had a good amount of toppings. It was also quite nice for its price. It reminds me of the Dan Bing I ate back in Taiwan. Had lunch on a Wednesday afternoon and we were a group of 7 with a toddler and we were seated right away. The restaurant had both indoor and outdoor seating and the high ceilings made the ambiance feel really nice. The decor was simple and pretty. The food arrived pretty fast and enjoyed it. Loved the beef noodle soup with added chili oil. The popcorn chicken was really crispy. Also got to try the wonton soup, shrimp wontons, beef rolls, and mapo tofu. They were all delicious but the stand outs were the beef noodle soup and the popcorn chicken. Also stayed for dessert which we got the mochi, peanut and black sesame. This is the 3rd time I've been here and each time I love it more. Their flavors are well balanced and if you need more salt or spice you can add that with the side sauces. The popcorn chicken and Sha Gua Mian & Side Braised Beef Shank has been one of my favorites. I think everything I've had is a must try. We shared the dan dan noodles, the 3 cup Jidori chicken, pan-fried pork buns, and cucumber salad. I also got the soy milk, which I believe is made in-house. The food came pretty quickly and arrived before our drinks, in fact. The cucumber salad was fresh, and the cucumbers had a nice crunch. I liked the flavor of the chicken, but I thought it a bit on the dry side. The dan dan noodles and pork buns were excellent, however. The noodles were flavorful and had an enjoyable chew. The pork buns were tasty as well and filled with juicy meat. I also really liked the soy milk. It wasn't too sweet, and it had a nice thickness. The staff was friendly. We came around 8:00 pm on a Saturday, and the place was still packed. The restaurant has a fun, hip atmosphere, and I liked the setup. You order at the counter before finding a table, which made everything feel efficient and relaxed. We ordered the pork belly bun, Taiwanese popcorn chicken, pan-fried pork buns, beef noodle soup, and Hakka mochi. The MVP of the meal was undoubtedly the Taiwanese popcorn chicken. It was honestly better than many versions I've had in Taiwan, and I've had plenty. The chicken was crispy and crunchy without being greasy, and the meat stayed juicy rather than drying out. If you come here, order this. The pork belly bun was my personal favorite. The braised pork belly practically melted in my mouth, and everything was seasoned beautifully. Simple, balanced, and incredibly satisfying. The pan-fried pork buns were the only disappointment. The filling felt underseasoned, and the bottoms lacked the crispy crust I was hoping for. They were fine, but not something I would order again. The beef noodle soup was solid. The broth was excellent, with a depth of flavor and spice profile that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, the beef shank was overcooked and a bit too dry (乾) for my liking. For dessert, we had the Hakka mochi. It was served warm, pleasantly chewy, and not overly sweet. It was a nice way to end the meal and made me curious to try some of their other desserts next time. This was overall a fantastic meal. There vegetarian options were so delicious that this meat eater enjoyed it more than some of the non-veggie options. The caterers did a beautiful job of set up. HOW DOES IT WORK? They offer menu at the front when you walk n into the restaurant. You would order and pay first, and then they'll give you a number stand. It is self-seating so you'll place the number on your table. They offer some utensils at the tables but it is also self service so you can get your own bowl, plates, utensils and water. FOOD I came with a large group so we ordered a good number of dishes. All the dishes were delicious, flavorful and above and beyond for what I find it to be more a fusion-Asian restaurant. I particularly liked their brown sugar milk team as it comes with boba and grass jelly. And their mochi was SO delicious. This would be a place my parents would enjoy a lot. Came here twice for lunch because it was at a convenient location for me, and both times was good but not amazing enough that I'd make a trip out for it if I were further away. Below are the dishes I tried, ordered from best to worst. Wok tossed basil eggplant ($16) : 5/5 my favorite dish. The eggplant was very soft and thickly cut so it was juicy and the basil flavor was strong. Taiwanese popcorn chicken ($13.50) : 5/5 very good spice with the chicken crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside, served with lots of basil Dan Dan noodles ($12.50) : 4/5 flavor was good but noodles a bit over cooked Pork belly clam shell bun ($7) : 4/5 tasted pretty authentic but wish the meat was a bit bigger since I felt like I had more bun left over Cucumber cold appetizer ($5.50) : 3/5 flavor was just ok Cold soy milk ($4.25) : 3/5 standard tasting soy milk so nothing special. I didn't like how they put in a bunch of ice though and as I was drinking it, they started melting on the hot day and at the end was very watered down Shrimp wontons ($11) : 2/5 I didn't enjoy the wontons nor the sauce. Lacked some spice and wontons had too much green onions and flavor was lacking otherwise Brown rice ($2.50) : 1/5 do not order brown rice! I've come to the realization that Taiwanese food may not be entirely for me. That said, Pine & Crane's dan dan noodles are literal perfection. We often pick them up as a side to whatever meal we're making at home, and they somehow tie everything together beautifully. They're peanuty, saucy, and the cucumbers add the perfect crunch. My fiancé usually hates cucumbers, but even he loves them in this dish. I've also tried the popcorn chicken, spicy shrimp dumplings, and grass jelly. I found the rest of these a little underwhelming, but I think that may come down more to my personal taste than the quality of the food. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive with placing our items and clearing out dishes after we gobbled through. My favorite items include their fried pork buns, Dan Dan noodles, and my paper crane cocktail! The noodles were scrumptious, they came with finely chopped fresh veggie and no flaws. The peanut sauce was to perfection in my opinion. The crispy fried buns also were amazing, and were surprisingly strong flavored pork, and of course had great textured exterior. I have been here more times than I can count now. Whenever I have friends or family in town staying in DTLA I always take them here. Pine and Crane is the sister restaurant to Joy on York, which is one of my all time favorites. I think I still personally love Joy more for their thousand layer pancakes, which Pine and Crane doesn't serve. They serve the same Dan Dan noodles and Mapo tofu though and those are both amazing. The one big difference here are the crispy rice cakes and mushrooms. Now those were probably the best NEW thing I had (the Dan Dan are amazing at here and Joy). These were really great though and would come back for them. I also tried to three cup chicken and the Taiwanese sticky rice. Those were both pretty good. Order off the menu at the front counter and grab your beverages and they bring you your food or other beverages if needed. We ended up ordering to share family style. We got shrimp wontons, a beef roll, cucumber salad, beef noodle soup, popcorn chicken, and a sauteed eggplant dish. Not sure if we just ordered really well or if we were really hungry, but every dish was delicious and really hit the spot. I ordered a few things initially so we could get a table, then went back to order more. They specialize in Taiwanese dishes, but they're served as small, shareable plates, kind of like tapas. My wife had been craving the three-cup chicken, so I ordered that and the shrimp wontons, which are also good. I wish I had checked if the wontons were spicy, especially since my son was with us, but they were only mildly spicy, which he enjoyed. For my second order, I added minced pork on rice, Taiwanese popcorn chicken, and Dan Dan noodles. Everything was great; we didn't dislike anything. My favorites were the shrimp wontons, Dan Dan noodles, and Taiwanese popcorn chicken. My only complaint is that it was a bit pricey for the portion sizes, but I understand that's DTLA.
