Went to my favorite Japanese curry spot in Sawtelle called Coco Ichibanya. It is the comfort food that everyone enjoys. Back in the days there was Curry House but sadly they are all gone now. Coco is basically the last one standing. My go to order is the pork cutlet omelet rice with curry. The egg is fluffy and the pork katsu is crunchy, meaty and juicy. I order the level 6 spicy which is just enough spicy to give it a kick. The gravy like curry has hint of spices, sweetness and smooth finish. Each order is just the right amount of food. The Japanese pickles give the dish a nice crunch and you can add as much as you want. This location is in Sawtelle so make sure to check out the dessert spots nearby after your meal. I usually park by the Marshalls which has 2 hour free parking. read more

Super classic Japanese curry place! I grew up close to a Curry House but they sadly closed down years ago and so this brought back feelings of nostalgia like wowww I've missed this! Sawtelle and Ktown (the 2 locations closest to me) are both out of the way + traffic so I haven't actually had Coco Ichibanya in ages. Pork cutlet omelet curry ($18.25)-- Tastes comforting, homey... everything you want Japanese curry to be. The katsu is not exactly dry but not super juicy either? Can't beat the ones at tonkatsu places but it works as a topping for curry. The omelet was thin and wasn't anything spectacular so I wouldn't get the egg again. This place is known for its customization potential. Pick your rice portion, spice level, toppings etc... buuuut be warned that it can come with a pretty steep price tag. It'll add up pretty quick. The pickles on the table are great!! Goes soooo well with curry and helps cut the fatty/greasy feeling. Or if you're starting to get tired of the taste, have more pickles! The chili powder is good too. Tip-- FREE PARKING!! Just follow the signs for restaurant parking. The entrance is around the corner + drive 1 min further down. There's a ramp to enter. Take the elevator up and you'll be where the restaurants are. They'll validate the parking slip. To get down, just go back to the same elevator (insert slip to scan or else elevator button won't work). Japanese curry is just one of things you have to be in the mood for. This the second Coco ichibanya that I've been to. The only negative thing I have to say is I wish they gave more curry. The to go containers aren't the best because of how they are a lot of the Curry sauce gets caught in the ridges. But everything stays fresh. Japanese Curry will definitely spoil you! read more

First time trying Coco Ichibanya and at this location close to Westwood/Sawtelle. It's a pretty reputable Japanese curry place. Since it's in LA, you have to find parking and pay. Luckily there's a public parking garage right across the street for $10 or $11 if paying by credit card. Upon entering I was not sure if it was an order upfront and sit down to eat place or you order at the table and they still bring you the food. It was order at the table and they bring you the food. The menu is pretty large only because you can create so many variations of curry. You can add an omelet too. It's a pretty busy spot. Pretty down to earth place where some you see large groups and other tables just families sitting down together to eat. Pretty chill. Overall decent portions and very good curry and rice! Food I love curry and all types of curry. I've also had my fair share of coco ichibanya at different branches inside and outside of the US. I got the curry udon with chicken katsu and I have to say the curry most of the time at coco ichibanya is just okay and passable. If you want reliable curry flavor that you know then this place it and while I did enjoy my order, it could always be better. The curry itself was pretty good and hits you with good flavor but it was a bit watered down which I didn't enjoy as much. The chicken katsu itself was pretty good, nice and crunchy but still kinda tender on the inside. As a whole, the dish was pretty okay Service/Ambiance On a friday night, the place wasn't too packed and our party of 6 got seated pretty much right away. The egg was very fluffy and just added additional great flavor. We had a handful of waitresses who checked on us very consistently. Coming again to try it, I have to admit that it really hits the spot especially for a light brunch. We were seated and served fairly quickly. To match the ambiance of egg and curry, the interior is well decorated with lighter colors and very relaxing to sit in, especially for a calm afternoon. The curry had a good texture, not too light or too viscous. The rice was especially fluffy. I had their signature with omelet... and I have to admit that I've never see an egg made this paper thin, almost as thin as tissue! The amount of veggies and protein were appropriate, though a bit on the dry end. I can't say that I left feeling dissatisfied, but I also can't admit that it was the most satisfying meal, something ~ 3.5 / 5.0.
