Co-worker/Friend and I decided to go check out Suehiro Japanese Restaurant for lunch. Arrived at 12:15pm today, Thursday and the place was dead. The hostess that greeted us and seated us was very friendly. The ambiance off the dining area was pretty nice. I thought their menu items were very good. The prices are pretty good also, in my opinion. The food we ordered came out pretty fast. Fresh and hot! My coworker/friend and I both agreed that the food we ordered were very delicious. We both enjoyed our meal. The service was ok. Our waitress was nice and friendly, but she was not attentive enough. My drink has been empty for quite sometime and she never checked up on us. Historically our favorite sushi restaurant in Ft. C but tonight was really bad. The tuna sent out on the sushi boat and rolls should not have ever been served. The color was brownish and not the bright red color one is accustomed to with quality fresh tuna. The fish smelled ok but a small bite had a flavor I can only describe as "diesel fuel". We notified the server who went and talked with the chef who's response was " it's a fatty piece so the color is different". I have eaten and purchased tuna in many places over the years and this statement is nonsense. They did offer to discount or make another but that wasn't the point. Craving a mini sushi feast for lunch, my coworkers and I did a quick search and made our way to Suehiro Japanese Restaurant. We ordered an appetizer and four rolls: stuffed avocado, Tijuana, tempura Philly, Kimi K, and spider attack rolls. PROs: ++ The sushi menu is HUGE! If you can't find something you want on this menu, I'm not sure if you're trying hard enough. ++ All meals are served with a bowl of miso and cucumber salad. The miso had some of the most tender tofu I think I've had. The cucumber salad was delish too. ++ The stuffed avocado was delicious, and we agreed both the temoura Philly, Tijuana, and spider attack roll CONs: -- There was a very weird taste to the Kimi K roll**. My fellow diners and I managed to pinpoint the off taste to the panko bread crumbs. -- The restaurant had a fishy smell when we first walked in. I'm glad we opted to eat on the patio. -- The menu is confusing! Given how large it is, it makes numerous references to other rolls to explain the current roll you want to know about. I swear one was three deep, referencing other rolls, which gets very confusing with a menu that size! -- I also find it unsettling that the menu is so large. It truly makes me question the quality and freshness of the ingredients. **I will note that when we asked our server about the Kimi K roll, she went ahead and discounted our meal for it, which was a nice touch. Eh, while Suehiro Japanese Restaurant was alright, and they handled our concerns about the taste of the meal, I don't think I would make my way back any time soon. read more

The sushi was so salty and poorly made I couldn't even finish it -- tasted like it had been sitting out all day. The rice was mushy, the fish didn't taste fresh, and everything just screamed "low effort." Service? Don't even get me started. We waited nearly 20 minutes just to get water, and our server looked like they'd rather be anywhere else. No greetings, no smile, just attitude. We were seated at this awkward half-table near the kitchen, constantly bumped by staff walking by. Not a single apology. We've eaten at Suehiro three times in the past few months, and this restaurant has never disappointed us! Outstanding fresh Japanese cuisine at a reasonable price, always plated and presented beautifully. The Miso Soup is the best I've had since we lived in Hawaii and their fresh Seaweed Salad and Tempura Shrimp & Veggies are spectacular. Oh, and the sushi? FANTASTIC, every bite is delicious! We've yet to find an item on the menu that we haven't raved over. Service is great and the ambiance is clean and casual. We just had one of the most enjoyable eating out experiences, thanks largely to our server Elex P. We did what we always do...take the server's advice when ordering. Elex recommended we start with the Mixed Nachos ($18.50). I went along but was not excited until it arrived. The "nachos" are tempura battered triangular nori (seaweed sheet). Really crunchy and tasty made better when you dip into the tuna poke. It's also a lot of food. We were nearly full after just this dish. I picked out the fried oysters ($8.00 for 6pcs). This was a hit. We ordered 6 special rolls in addition to the starters. All were excellent. * 007 ($19.50) * Calamari ($12.50) * Surf and turf ($23.00) * Alaskan ($12.50) w/o cream cheese * Blackened Lime ($18.50) * Chef's Creation ($18.50) - Inside: tempura shrimp, tempura asparagus, jalapeño, Tijuana mix; Top: Roulette mix, jay kewpie, seared sauce. The chefs creation and surf and turf were standouts. We told Elex absolutely please no cream cheese in anything. Elex would joke, ok extra cream cheese. He brought out a cream cheese only roll as the joke Chef's Creation. It was presented nicely with everything bagel seasoning. I was clearly grossed out, but was the only one who tried it. Stopped in on Saturday night with high hopes as my girflfriend and I have heard many good things about this restaurant. Sadly, our waiter kind of ruined the birthday dinner experience for us. He spent long amounts of time just chatting with friends at 2 other tables, our drinks were brought out after waiting nearly half an hour. We also ordered edamame as a starter and didn't get it until we were almost done with our dinner. We asked him about it and looked panicked and said, "uhh, someone else must have taken it so I'll have them make another one". The miso soup also came out with our dinner. We were there for nearly an hour and 15 minutes before eating. I hate to just come and complain because the food wasn't bad, but man that waiter just made the experience so poor. Keep in mind those are just a few things that happened over the whole hour and 45 minute dining experience. This is my go too sushi spot in this area of FoCo. They are always super quick and kind, allowing plenty of privacy for you and your friends at the table. I always recommend the nigiri since it always tastes super fresh. I also recommend the tempura, everything tempura is a must get here. I will have too recommend against the eel here since it tends too be dry (and sometimes with small pin bones). Otherwise everything is amazing. They serve complimentary soup and cucumber salad before your meal, provide absolutely wonderful entrees, and have perfect deserts too match. I wouldn't call this place authentic, but I would call it a must see if you are craving sushi. read more

I've ordered takeout from here a few times before, but this was our first time dining in. The calamari was delicious as well as the nigiri on the boat (which my husband stated was more like a surfboard). Our waitress said the boat should be good enough for 2-3 people and it definitely filled the 2 of us up. I wish there was at least 2 of each piece so we could each have one, but I think it'd be really good for someone who is having sushi for the first time to get to try the different fish. The salmon and tuna tasted very fresh. The service was very good and our waters were refilled often. The booth we sat in was nice and private and it wasn't too busy during lunchtime. I finally went back because I was in the area and craving sushi, they were open with two tables seated for lunch. I ordered the Lobster roll because it sounded delicious. The meal came with soup and cucumber salad which I thought was a nice touch. But my lunch was $27 without tax or tip for one cut roll and an overpriced glass of wine. I don't mind paying for quality but this was far from it. The nori was thick and chewy, unable to bite through it. It was like black leather and wouldn't tear at all, ask for a knife! I picked up one roll with my hands and tried to bite through it, even using my back teeth. The waitress insulated me. I said "I've never.. " and she said "Never had sushi before?". I said NO, I've never had sushi I couldn't bite through!!! No apologies, just correcting me and telling me that's the type of nori they use so he tried to cut it thin, and no kidding - the rolls were cut very thin! I peeled it all off and left it on the plate, leaving the place hungry. She never asked me if I wanted to order a drink, I had to flag her down after I finished my soup. I found a piece of plastic wrap in my sushi. I know the fish is wrapped in plastic wrap, so I'm assuming the chefs accidentally cut some of the plastic off when they were slicing my fish. read more

I ordered take out and got the dynamite lunch special which comes with two rolls of your choice. The actual dynamite dish was served warm and although full of flavor I will not order this again. It was good and I had to try it cause I didn't know what to expect but Just not for me. Ordered appetizer, 2 drinks and food all in one shot. Sushi came out first, 20 mins after ordering. Then came the drinks. Sushi was ate and drinks were had. Then came the appetizer and second meal together, both cold. Ordered a second drink and was done eating by the time it came out. Last time we were there the experience was almost the exact same. The dynamite bake was tastier than I expected, with high quality rice topped with fish and baked mayo served in a pot pie tin. They said that the wait would take 20 minutes when it actually took 40. still with high hopes since the food looked good. we got an appetizer of calamari and it was good but was over priced for an appetizer. we got 3 sushi rolls and wow they were way overpriced. one of the rolls was mushy with no flavor and the other roll's tasted funky. Very nice atmosphere, great outdoor seating and very accommodating servers. I started with a wine (Kim Crawford) and ordered a variety of items (cheat day sushi). BI was really enjoying my wine, until I was finished. Thinking it would be really nice to have another...Took 10 min to order a second. Oh, and no food after 30 min. Ok, no big deal I'm enjoying the atmosphere, until it's oddly taking way too long for the number of people in the restaurant. I'm sitting alone, so it's getting a little uncomfortable. The server would not make eye contact, which usually signals that they know and can't do anything about it. Ok, as I said above no big deal, I'm now enjoying my second glass of wine and the weather is beautiful outside. Finally it comes and it's pretty good. Everything was fresh and decent size. When finished I asked why it took 45 minutes to be served. I was told they were slammed with take out orders. Ok, note to staff...PLEASE let your customers in on that piece of information. Maybe I would have stayed and maybe not. 45 minutes is not bad when you have more than one person...just an idea! Overall I like this place read more

Felt very brushed off and not at all appreciated as a paying customer.(this is not the 1st time and has become their "MO" hence this review. I generally tip 15 to 20% for pick up since I'm not eating in, but not if this is the treatment. Acting manager had no idea how to help the situation. If you sat where we did (a 2 person table between the bathrooms and kitchen) you can hear and see everything the chefs are saying, interesting content. Nice location, great patio. The restaurant is becoming somewhat cluttered with junk everywhere and sitting inside isn't really enjoyable unless you get a secluded table in the back. We were awkwardly sat against the servers bar, entrance and host stand. Which is honestly their worst spot in the restaurant and your conversations are drowned out by the sounds of the servers & chefs banter, and complaints when things are in the weeds like our dinner was last night. If I was basing this review on just last nights dining experience I would give it 3 stars but it's typically pretty decent, so try to sit out on the patio. Food for some reason does take longer here to the point where you start to get hangry on all occasions we've eaten here. The sushi here is pretty good for Fort Collins, they have a pretty extensive menu, and even the bento boxes & entrees have caught our eye. They do serve complementary cucumber salad and miso soup. But this doesn't make up for the fact that all their rolls seem to be around $18 each. It's definitely over priced for this restaurant which easily becomes an over $100 meal for an ok experience. We don't really have a favorite roll they all taste pretty good but don't stand out from each other, except for a select number of rolls like their big chill cucumber roll, or blackened tuna wasabi lime (but whatch out for the actual lime wedge w/skin on that your supposed to eat, lime zest would be edible & better for taste). Presentation is nice and always taste fresh. They are really heavy handed with the jalapeño and cream cheese has seemed to infiltrate over half of there sushi menu which keeps us from order a lot of the rolls but it can't be avoided. Cheese on everything is definitely a culinary Fort Collins theme so that's not surprising but personally we hate to see cream cheese in any japanese food. read more
