Spoke with Tim from Mako who agreed with my husband that a French drain sump pump in the low corner would do the trick. To be honest I was terrified to do this, someone long ago convinced me never to break that slab. We had Tim install the new Sump Pump method & we have been bone dry ever since. As a side note, that ductless unit came in handy more than once when I had issues with my boiler. I turned on the heat and was not cold in the winter while I waited for the boiler to be repaired. My only complaint with this install is upstairs. The downstairs in my house has the familiar units on the wall for heating and cooling. Upstairs in my house I decided to do a hidden unit and vent through the wall. Looking more like a traditional air conditioning vent. We connected two rooms to that unit. Brian did the measurements and recommended the unit. Apparently there are two hidden unit sizes that are available. He picked the smaller of the two. Needless to say, it doesn't work. Years later of going back and forth with AWS, I still have the smaller unit in and I'm a little salty. This expensive unit does not cool the upstairs. I'm not holding that against them as a company however. I do wish I could get resolution. AWS also installed the plumbing and flowback unit for my inground sprinkler system. They have fixed and replaced several leaking pipes I have had in this old house. Even requiring to break walls in one instance. I think the biggest job was putting in a new boiler and hot water heater after the original boiler cracked and water was all over my basement. Man, getting that old boiler up the steps was a five man job!! I believe the boiler was the most impressive job. The plumber came in and was very knowledgeable. He pretty much re-piped everything going to that new boiler. Even had to run new gas lines because the old ones weren't up to code. What was really impressive, as pointed out by the inspector when he came, is the fact that they took the time to put the boiler up on concrete bricks. They also made sure to do new venting to the chimney and added the proper plumbing so pressure doesn't build up and I get an explosion. This wasn't a cut and Page job that you would get from a handyman but a real installation from people that know what they're doing. I get the unit serviced yearly and try to keep it purring. Most recently I was getting water spitting out of my second floor radiator. When I looked at my boiler the level of the water was all the way to the top which it should not be. I tried to drain it out but nothing came out of the spicket. I made the service call and AWS came the next day. Paul is an older plumber and comes with experience. I like that. Calmed me and made me confident in his abilities. He was very patient and explained a lot more in the hour he was here than I've heard in all my other service calls. First of all he told me I need to drain my water weekly from the furnace. That will become a Sunday ritual. This will clear out the sediment so it doesn't settle. I have steam radiators and of course everything flows back into the furnace. All of that sediment is no good. He reminded me to turn off the gas and the electricity to the unit in the warm months. I'm not using the unit going those times. From now on I will also make sure that I drain it yearly right before I turn it on because all the water from the pipes and the radiators come back down during the summer months. Secondly he told me I need to drain my hot water heater once a year. Connect a hose, put it outside the window and flush all the sentiment out. He also pointed out that this should have been a part on the water heater that helps keep the water clean. That is not a part of my water heater. When I replace this I will make sure. I think it's called a solenoid. Any plumbers out there can correct me. The last thing he offered is to change out my vents on the radiators because the brand isn't that great of a brand. What is really good is that he didn't try to break the bank when he came here. He cleared the clog. Drained my furnace from the extra water. Cleaned what needed to be cleaned and put a chemical in it. On top of that he did a preventative maintenance in order to get it ready for the winter. It was all under $400 and I think that's fair for a service call in this day and age.

Instead of resolving the issue promptly, he drove around for nearly 3 hours and then sat in his vehicle for almost an additional hour, claiming he was searching for a part that costs around $200. In the end, we were charged nearly $2,000 for a part that was installed in less than 40 minutes. This gives the strong impression that unnecessary delays were used to inflate the final bill. Highly unprofessional and unacceptable business practice. To make matters worse, the area was not even cleaned after the work was completed. We would not recommend this service to anyone.

My appointment was confirmed for between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. At 8:30 AM, they called asking if they could come immediately. I explained that my family was still getting ready for the day and that we only have one bathroom, so I asked them to honor the original appointment window. Then, at noon, I received another call saying the technician was on the way. They didn't arrive until about 20 minutes later. Two technicians came in, looked at the drain issue, and quoted nearly $800 plus tax. Because this is the only bathroom in my home and I needed the problem fixed, I really didn't have much choice. I approved the work. Here's the part that bothered me: the entire job took less than 15 minutes. To be clear, the drain is working and the technicians were professional. I have no complaints about the quality of the repair. My issue is paying nearly $800 for what amounted to a very quick service call. When the technicians walked out the door less than 15 minutes after they arrived, it was hard not to feel like I had just paid an emergency premium price for a routine fix. To make matters worse, I continued receiving automated calls from Roto-Rooter trying to schedule the appointment that had already been completed and paid for. That gave the impression that the scheduling and customer service systems are not well coordinated. If you need immediate service and money is no object, Roto-Rooter will likely get the job done. If you have time to shop around, I strongly recommend getting multiple quotes first. Looking back, I suspect many local plumbers could have performed the same repair for significantly less.

In fact, another HVAC company came and found that there was water in the inducer motor. He blew out the pipes leading to it and emptied the water out of the inducer motor. No need to replace the inducer motor and certainly no need to replace entire furnace. Tom either did not know what he was doing or was not honest about the problem. Please beware!

This is why I believe this to be true: Our AC relay was tripped because the fire marshall was here at our building, which is commercial and residential, and had to shut things off before his tests. I called A All and they said it could only be fixed manually so they came, spent 5 minutes, and charged me $398. That was 2 weeks ago. Bad enough. The next day the AC went off again, and when A All came back, they said that the relay switch was burning out, and although they bypassed it we needed a new one and they would order it. Then this past Saturday the AC would not kick on for 2 hours and we had a call in. It went back on so we cancelled the call. Then Monday AM, there was no air conditioning. I put a call in and 4 hours later no one had shown up yet. I called back and I was told that one of the vans had broken and the other guy had an emergency so the tech was going to come on Tues morning. Seriously, we felt like we were shoved to the side. Robert shows up on Tues. morning and tells us that the AC compressor is shot and we need a new one. We didn't even ask if we still needed a new switch. We told them to get us an estimate. We had not heard a word by Wednesday afternoon which I found strange. He then told us that it is unfortunately a common thing, especially when it involves a commercial unit where the tenant (me) most likely is not going up on the roof to inspect. He fixed what had been broken and charged me $369.33! Before I let A All know what I had been told, let alone that it had been fixed, I called to get the estimated price for the new unit. I had to wait an hour and that I would get a callback with the price. No call. So I called back and waited to speak with Tyler. Neither he nor Robert would get on the phone after the assistant told me the price. She said it was going to be $4800 for a new compressor, labor, and installation. So knowing that the compressor is perfectly fine as per 2 other HVAC companies, I now believe they were going to take my money and not even replace the "broken" one. They would have just restrapped, refiltered, and rewired like the other guy and pretended they did a whole new one. STAY AWAY FROM THIS RIPOFF!!
