Been looking for a bakery in Boston for years since moving here and finally found this little gem. Cookies are fresh and lots of variety (chocolate chip, m&m, oatmeal raisin, sugar, black and white, etc). They have slices of cake and whole cakes. Cupcakes galore and not going to break the bank like most bakeries in Boston. Love the (seasonal) Guinness chocolate cupcake. Frosting on cupcakes are fresh and ample. The mini tarts will satisfy any picky dessert eater: fruit tarts, chocolate tarts, pie tarts, cookie tarts! Highly recommend the eclairs (mini and regular size) and the macaroons covered in chocolate are to die for! They also have lobster tails and Italian cookies. Courtesy of a Groupon voucher deal, we picked up an 8" Strawberry Shortcake $28.99 and a large cannoli $3.35 for nearly half off. The cannoli was meant for another's tummy, so I didn't get to enjoy it, but... I did scoop up the sizeable glop of filling that had stuck to the paper plate that the bakery had used to carry the pastry before they placed it into a box for the trip home. Mmmm... creamy dairy goodness... The Strawberry Shortcake consisted of two layers of light cake (cake, not short cake biscuit), filled with fresh whipped cream and a semi-cooked strawberry filling, topped with several strawberry halves. It looked yummy, and was yummy. Not too sweet, fruity, creamy, goodness. *** 12/2013 visit *** Decided to try to well touted Brambles (99 cents) - a light flaky pastry encasing a seedless raspberry filling. They're actually pretty small at about 2 3/4 inches in diameter, but they are tasty, and I preferred it over the raspberry turnover ($1.79) in all manners except for cost. The pastry in the turnover was a bit thick. *** 9/2016 *** Good job, Sugar Bakery, on the cake we ordered. It was well received and folks asked me where we got it! It was $45 for a 12" cake which serves 25-30 people. In reality, half of our cake fed the 25 or so ladies in attendance. We're lightweights, I guess. But with whipped cream frosting, it was $52.99. Whipped cream frosting is tough to decorate, so they recommended either chocolate shavings (but my cake was not chocolate, so I felt that might be misleading), or $5-7 for a garnish of glazed fruit. Such a cute shop inside and out. But one word: confusion. I have never been to Sugar Bakery so it was somewhat overwhelming on choosing the (what I thought would have been) perfect treats. I got an Oreo cupcake, vanilla cupcake and a cookie with butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips. Presentation-wise...BEAUTIFUL. Taste on the other hand was disappointing. The Oreo chocolate cupcake did not taste like chocolate at all. It tasted flavorless, literally. It was like I was eating an invisible cupcake, all I got out of it was texture. The Oreo frosting was a tasteless creamy sugared topping. The vanilla cupcake was good (according to my mom). She said it was your average vanilla cupcake with a smooth vanilla frosting. The cookie we split was overwhelming with butterscotch. Both white and milk chocolate chips could not be tasted. Overall, an interesting experience but I would like to go back to taste other pastries they offer. They make anything your little heart could desire! read more

Okay, I am updating my review to five stars because the brambles are so freaking good. This is literally a review for the brambles, not the bakery in itself. I was lucky enough to be in the area again and so I came in again to get four brambles. 99 cents each and SOOOOOOO delicious. No need to get anything else here. I bit into it and took the time to appreciate it - the pastry is REALLY flaky. I was observing that the pastry had very distinct layers and there is a thick crust of granulated sugar on top. The filling is just the right amount of sweet/tart and a perfect consistency - not too sticky. This is like the best mini berry pie or fanciest, most delicious pop tart you've ever had. For real, this is top stuff and I don't say that lightly. I will definitely dream of these and miss them. I can say it's one of the best food items I've eaten in the Boston area, up there with a Mike's plain cannoli. Don't waste your calories or belly room on anything else except for the brambles. read more

That pastries were amazing. The bramble had the perfect amount of jam. We tried a good sample of cookies, cupcakes and Italian pastries. I would have give it 5 stars but the server was for some reason angry. So much so that when she put the cookie tray back in the case she slid it so har that a half dozen cookies flew off the tray. I love that this place is open later during the week. I came here for a dozen of miscellaneous cupcakes for a birthday and was not disappointed. I tried the Oreo, carrot cake, and seasonal pumpkin cupcakes and loved each and every single one. Sorry, no photo this time due to scarfing them down. The cupcakes were moist and the frosting was not too sweet. A dozen roughly costs around $30 and is well worth the price! Street parking was easy to find and the service was extremely helpful. Note: either carry out the boxes or bring a reusable bag to carry out if you don't want to pay for the paper bags (I believe it's a 5-10 cent charge). read more

A wonderful experience. I visited the Thursday before Christmas and needless to say it was busy. But the display cases were full of delicious and beautiful looking goodies. It took a little time for me to choose which treats to buy as gifts but the girl who waited on me was patient and very nice in telling me about each thing I pointed to. great baked goods, poor customer service. the young lady in the black/gray zippered fleece and baseball cap who wrote the birthday message on the cake i purchased about ten minutes ago not only squished two of the raspberries on the cake, but also had unique writing such that it was difficult to distinguish her Rs from Ns, rendering the message questionable. she apologized for mushing the raspberries yet, to add indignity to the experience, she charged me 20 cents for a bag and then failed to assist me in placing the cake in said bag. when i requested help from the other employee, she mumbled something inaudible regarding not offering to help me (because i had been on the verge of chiding her for charging me 20 cents when she messed up part of the cake) and then, huffing and puffing, assisted the other employee with entering my cake in the bag. never returning. too bad as this has been my go to for cakes for years. one bad experience, though, is all it takes for loyalty to be erased. read more

Can't believe this got anything less than 5 stars This is the best bakery for cookies cupcakes or sweets in Boston: the breadth of choices is more than any north end bakery and better - I brought cookies to a party and people freaked out, then cupcakes and more the same reaction, I brought their m and m cookies to a pot luck type event and all different people asked separately to bring some home, every single thing is delicious. I also feel like fairly priced. Anyway, totally a happy surprise and for me an unknown gem, can't recommend enough. Coffee good too. Also not a game changer but I love that everyone in their is working....sounds funny but when you go to say a Whole Foods or Starbucks, there are like 4 people behind the counter and one customer looking at them like "hellllooooo just need a slice of turkey" and this shop has all attentive, nice, bustling employees who seem to take pride in their shop, as they should! read more

I ordered a gender reveal cake (for twins im expecting) this past weekend only to cut into it to find no coloring in the cake as I discussed when placing the order. It was incredibly disappointing and really ruined my gender reveal. I called that day to let them know of the mistake and got an apology... kind of expected something to make up for it. I am really still upset by the experience I had. That said, the cake was very well decorated, tasted great and I was so impressed by the bakery overall. This place is the right balance of oldschool bakery (they have all the goodies my grandma would have picked up on her way home from the hair salon, back in the day) and new-school technique and flavor. They are super reasonably priced, friendly, and everything I've had is delicious. I gave up sweets for Lent and THIS was the place I chose to break the fast of 40 days. They did not let me down. A Spoon Full of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down. If you haven't come out to West Roxbury, the Sugar Bakery should be reason enough to get in your car and take a little road trip to Centre Street. My suggestion would be to make this your lunch time plan as the bakery is very conveniently attached to the Real Deal Deli. I've had the Boneless Buffalo Sub which was amazing. There are two sizes, a small and a large. Unless you haven't eaten for several days or plan on having your sub for lunch and dinner I would suggest getting the small. You can also pick from wraps and paninis as well as a bunch of plates that you can get for your super bowl party! But, back to the bakery. You can get anything from gourmet cupcakes, cakes, cinnamon rolls and cookies to a flat tire which is only $1. You should also keep in mind that breakfast baked goods are half price after 3pm! Needless to say, there isn't enough I can say about this bakery and I truly look forward to eating my apple and walnut turnover. So...let's review... 1. Haven't been to West Roxbury yet? Sugar is adorable. Very hip and modern. The cupcakes are stunning and they are as good as everyone says they are. There was a wide variety of flavors, even cotton candy, which did not sound remotely good to me. I almost died when the woman said there was a peanut butter cupcake, as peanut butter is easily one of my favorite things in this world. The peanut butter cupcake was good, however, my favorite was the simple yellow cake with chocolate frosting. The cake was perfectly moist and delicious. The chocolate frosting was not too sweet, not too hard and not overpowering. In my opinion, it was the perfect cupcake. I was asked to bring a baby shower cake for three of my coworkers for a joint baby shower. I had heard about this bakery from my mother, and had just gotten off the plane ready to try out Sugar. I was surprised that it was open on a Sunday, late afternoon. Pleasantly surprised. I found a parking spot on the street right across from the bakery. When I walked in, it was very busy, every seat was taken and it is already a very small place. The aromas swirled around of fresh baking, chocolate, and pure sugar. My father and I showed up, ready to buy an assortment of pastries and sinful goodies for my mother. They also sell coffee, in which my father politely ordered for us. We got a few muffins, and just about every cookie that they had in the bakery.
