Guess i shouldn't yelp on a sugar high. The owner reached out to me over email the same day i posted my review. They care what their customers think and offered to resolve the issue. I truly think it was square and not them. Ali - thanks for the nice email. @@@@ revised so cupcakes are tasty & you pay accordingly. This is more about my recent customer loyalty experience- which apparently they have changed, or Square (the credit card processor) has changed. Not sure which. I plugged my "number" to see if i had a "reward" (usually a 10% discount). it didn't "recognize " my number. clerk says "just pay" and try again. so i pay and plugged in my cell number - which i never give out - nothing from the machine - i ask the clerk - was it the right one? she says "yes" minutes later i receive 2 texts from square asking me to set up an account, WT?? Even though square emailed me my receipt. read more

The blueberry frosting cupcake is fantastic. I like how they're light and fluffy cupcakes paired with creamy smooth frosting. I really don't care much for cupcakes but these are superior in texture and flavor. The hot chocolate was delicious too! Not too sweet. Everything is reasonably priced considering the quality. They have a point system you can sign up for. $1 = 1 star. 100 stars and you get a free cupcake or something. 300 stars and you get 10% off the whole order. Cute idea. read more

We loved our cake so much!!! Sugar Lab Bake Shop was prompt with the delivery and we loved the taste so much (lemon cake with lemon curd filling). One minor thing (that is totally not a big deal because our cake was still beautiful and tasted great) is that the color was pink ombré and not pink to purple like we originally asked for. But all requests for the decorations of the berries was followed through perfectly. We loved everything and highly recommend this bakery!!! read more

New customer to this bakery. The new location is great and is what prompted me to get down to the area of the harbor and explore some. I've visited the shop twice and have to comment that I have been greeted both times upon entry which is important. It is best to arrive earlier in the day to have a better selection of treats. They have added online ordering which for me, is a huge plus and added bonus. First visit I got the Irish cream chocolate cupcake with ganache and an iced americano. I will say I am not a fan of buttercream frosting but choices were limited. The cake was moist and delicious. I would give it a 3.5/5. I wish there was more chocolate flavor and a touch more of the ganache (portion/ratio to cake) would have been nice. The iced americano I would forego. The second visit was around St Patrick's Day. I did place my order online for pick up. Got the lemon raspberry, snickerdoodle, and pot 'o gold cupcake. Once there, I ordered a chocolate chip cookie and a cold brew coffee. I have to say that the lemon raspberry but was absolute favorite. Great lemon flavor and the raspberry frosting was excellent. Buttercream was light and airy with a yummy raspberry flavor. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed The other two flavors were just ok. I ate the cakes left the frosting but won't remember them. Cold brew again was just ok. I like my coffee robust and with a punch and I feel they brew a bit on the light side. Not bad just not my preferred way to have coffee. Loved the chocolate chip cookie! Overall the texture, crumb, and chew of the cupcakes is great. All have been moist. I'm happy to report that. Nothing worse than a dry cupcake. I'm on the hunt for the "best cupcake I've ever had" and so far, these are good and high up on the list. I do have to say size is an issue. All 4 of the cupcakes I've purchased ($4) have been different sizes. I feel this needs to be worked on. Consistency is important and I feel they could be a bit bigger for the price. A nice lip is what I look for. Overall, I would purchase from this bakery again. The employees have been nice and welcoming. I haven't tried other items available or their custom cakes. read more

Stumbled across this cute bakery this weekend such a delight to find! I couldnt make up my mind on what i wanted so i grabbed several items. Everything i tried was moist and flavorful! Micki and her team were great! We used them for our wedding cake, we did a two tier vintage style cake that was beautiful! I love the tasting box you can order to taste all their different flavors. My husband and I had so much fun trying different flavors each night on the weekend we picked up our box. We ordered a small cake for pictures and two kitchen cakes for 250 guests. Stopped in here on a whim and was almost turned away by the fact that the menu on the wall was majority drinks and I wasn't looking for a drink. But my friend who was with me pointed out the pastry case so we went over to take a look. It was early afternoon and they had a limited selection of cookies and cupcakes. We each bought one thing and then went out and had lunch in the harbor shopping center. Afterwards, we ate our Sugar Lab treats and they were SO good we ran back so we could buy more. Unfortunately they were out of some of the cookies we wanted, but we did still find others to buy and they were amazing. I tried a super chocolatly cupcake as well as the lemon-drop cookie sandwiches with raspberry frosting in the middle. VERY highly recommend the cookie sandwich. Cupcake was also very good, though I ate it the next day so it wasn't quite as fresh. Still very rich and tasty (and so attractive!!) Definitely will return here. The staff at Sugar Lab are amazing! I showed them a pic of what I wanted, brought them the flowers, and the cake was perfect. We chose chocolate cake w/ buttercream filling and the Swiss whipped frosting on the outside was flavorful and light. Service was prompt. Store looked cute. Nice location on the harbor. We tried the coffee cake, macarons, GF snickerdoodle cookie and two cupcakes for $20.25 with tax/tip. The snickerdoodle cookie was fresh and soft. We tried two flavors (Fruity Pebbles & Birthday Cake) of macarons but couldn't taste a difference between the two. The vanilla and snickerdoodle cupcakes had a very cute presentation but both tasted very dry. The coffee cake also looked very good but tasted ok at best. read more

As I was planning my son's Avengers themed 2nd birthday party, I began to search for a local bake shop that could recreate intricate designs for Iron Man, Captain America, and the Avengers logo. I found a reference photo from Pinterest and I have to say that the cookies we took home were absolutely gorgeous and exactly what we were looking for for our son's party! I emailed the shop about a month out from the party date to begin discussing with them my ideas for the cookies. They were so quick to respond with pricing and other details! I paid half up front then the final amount when I picked up the cookies the day before his party. From beginning to end I enjoyed working with Sugar Lab Bake Shop to create memorable cookies for the occasion. I highly recommend this shop for any baked good needs - especially custom cookies. I have purchased cupcakes and cookies as well as bars and macaroons and they have all been excellent. My kids love the treats baked here as do my wife and I. Not only have we enjoyed the treats at home but I have also purchased assortments for the staff where I work. So when you hand an assortment of cupcakes to 39 people and everyone loves them I think it's a good consensus. The owner is passionate about the products they create and very much involved in the day to quality control of the baked goods and customer service. We ordered the dessert bar that served 175-200 for our wedding on 8/12/23. It was an amazing variety of desserts from, mini cupcakes, cookies, tarts, cheesecakes and pies. They were a hit with our guest! Almost everything went. What was left over we gave to the servers and they were very grateful! I would recommend this to everyone! I would also use them again! I had a cousin ask about the dessert bar because her grandson will be 1 years old soon and I hey want to do the same thing. i found this place just last year and had to check out the hype they were promoting for unicorn day and ordered a variety of their cupcakes and cookies. The bakery was beyond stunning and clean. The cookies were moist and delicious and the cut out unicorn cookies were nice and snappy like a good sugar cookie should be however the cupcakes fell short for me they were nice to look at but the actual cake lacked the power of flavor it promised we didn't finish any of them. I didn't get much feedback when I asked about items and even mentioned it was my first time here so I didn't have any idea on what would be a good start (popular items) it was a bit discomforting but I had already gotten there and was determined to celebrate with my girls who were excited to see the items. Maybe if the staff would have been more interactive it would have help our experience and item choice. read more

GLUTEN FREE!!!!! I go every week to load up on my gluten free pastries with my morning coffee. Scones, muffins, cupcakes, cookies. There is always a Gluten Free option. And I love how they change the flavors monthly. I get so excited to taste the new flavors. The scones and muffins and lemon crinkle cookies are my absolute favorite. They are light and tender and moist and so freaking delicious. It makes me truly love Gluten Free and I don't have to feel like I'm restricted. And they recently had an event in store for Harry Potter day! All HP decorated, flavor-inspired and the store and employees all decked out. Love it. read more

Ventura Harbor has many sweet option: ice cream, chocolate and a bakery. Due to the somewhat drizzly cold day we opted for a bakery shop and beelined for Sugar lab. On this day there were very few baked item options. The lady at the counter said the had sold a lot earlier in the day. We opted for the remaining gingerbread cookie with frosting and the chocolate cookie with peppermint coating. The chocolate one was really good, almost like a brownie with peppermint, Yum! I don't know if I have been watching too many holiday baking shows, but I have learned that when making gingerbread, make sure the signature ingredient stands out, ginger. The cookie was light on the ginger. I had wished the frosting on top was more interesting, maybe with maple or cinnamon in it. The cappuccino I had was pretty good. Inside was a few tables to sit out or you can sit and enjoy the view of the harbor outside. read more

The only thing we can say to Sugar Lab is THANK YOU! Our dessert table was a hit. Our guests kept telling us how delicious the sugar cookies were, how moist the cupcakes were and how beautiful everything looked. We did a tasting with Ali and Micki and fell in love. It was easy to schedule a tasting and equally easy to work with them. Every email we sent was answered promptly and we felt comfortable working with them. We opted for a dessert table with a small cutting cake. Our dessert table had: red velvet, cookies & cream, white chocolate raspberry cupcakes, sugar cookies, mini triple berry pies & mini apple pies. We also asked for delivery, set up & rented a few cake stands. Overall it was such a positive experience. We can't thank the staff enough! My husband (!!) and I definitely recommend Sugar Lab! read more

Gah. This place is going to ruin me! The frosting on the lemon and peanut butter chocolate cupcakes is DIVINE! Came in this afternoon after hearing about them on Yelp. It wasn't too busy when I arrived (around noon) and I'm sure I could have gotten 1 of everything! The girls behind the counter were friendly, and I like the openness of this shop (minimal décor) doesn't clutter the environment. They had a "cake" along the side wall and we were invited to sign it! Neat touch. Here's what I ordered (please don't judge my piggyness): Vanilla cakepop-I ordered this but was given the Snickerdoodle one instead. Normally, I'm not a fan of anything Snickerdoodle, but this accident quickly made me a fan! The cake was so moist and flavorful, but I especially liked the sugar coated on the outside. Made it taste especially like candy! Salted caramel macaron: There's caramel in the middle of it! Very good. Set of 6 mini cupcakes. As I began my review, my favorites were the lemon cake and peanut butter chocolate. The frosting on both was so good. What other adjective can I choose besides good? Yummy? Outstanding? Flavorful? Outstanding. I will be back sooner rather than later. I'm hooked! read more

Wasnt thinking too much about this place but wow..wow! Cupcake was SO good. We are still thinking of the gluten free one. So decadent. Ordered 2 gluten free chocolate raspberry, one sugar cookie, lotus drink and strawberry shortcake cupcake and ice coffee. Cons: lotus drink way too sweet. Total price was $33. Pretty pricey but I realized she put in an extra gluten free cupcake which I didnt order but paid for. All good as it was so yummy. The coffee was also very good and helped with cutting some of the sweetness. Let's say...we ate these treats before we had lunch at Andria's and as we were eating our food, we were still talking about how good the cupcakes were..lol! You gotta try it if you are in the area. I absolutely LOVE Sugar Lab. They've got some amazingly creative cakes, cupcakes and treats. The macarons are THE BEST I've ever had. The team working there are all super friendly and outgoing. I've never had a bad experience and highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a sweet treat or cake. With COVID-19 they went above and beyond when they're able to open. I was able to pick up a bunch of goodies and they even sold some extra yeast so I could try to bake some stuff at home. 10/10 the best cake shop in the County. read more

Obsessed with Sugar Lab cookies!! Their service at the shop and online is amazing. They made our wedding favors and everyone loved them not only because they were absolutely gorgeous but because they tasted amazing too. Our out of state guests keep asking us to ship them more, hah. Established in 2012.

Ali Davis and Kelly Shirk opened The Sugar Lab in April 2012, just a few months after Ali graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a degree in biology. They decided take their passion for baking and open a bakery. Since then, this Mother-Daughter duo has continued to develop new recipes from both their own ideas and customer requests.

Meet the Business Owner: Ali K.

Ali graduated in December 2011 with a B.S. in Biological Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. During college, her love of baking and cake decorating flourished. Whenever she had spare time, she was baking for her sorority sisters, close friends, and co-workers. After gradation, she kept coming back to baking; nothing else seemed to satisfy her. Just a few months later, her dream became reality

From the start, Sugar Lab offered us several options for our wedding cake, allowing us to choose what would best suit our needs. We decided on a small 2-tier cake (which technically is not part of their "wedding" selection but worked perfect for what we needed) for an intimate touch, and the journey to creating our dream cake was nothing short of delightful. To ensure our cake was as delicious as it was beautiful, we went to their location and picked up a tasting box to decide on our cake flavor and frosting. Sugar Lab had an array of delicious combinations that made it so fun to choose. Every cake flavor and frosting we tried was a delight, but ultimately we decided on a vanilla bean cake with a cinnamon cream cheese frosting! When it came to the look of the cake, I shared some inspiration photos with Sugar Lab, and they were not only able to accommodate our vision but were also transparent with pricing. Above that, Cheryl did a fantastic job with fixing our last-minute problem when another Baker canceled on us a few days before my son's birthday party. She matched the design of the invitation, and made the most beautiful incredible cake for him and his first birthday. Honestly, I could not recommend more.
