My experience here has been nothing less than absolutely stellar. I cannot recommend this place enough if you are looking to adopt a pet. I came in here to surrender a kitten that I found in a Wal-Mart parking lot that was in pretty bad condition. While I was here, I instantly fell in love with a 4 year old Amstaff that had been there since July. He was a little rough around the edges in terms of his appearance but his personality was so sweet & gentle. I knew right then and there that I couldn't leave him behind. The pup was heartworm positive and although I have owned plenty of dogs in the past, I didn't know much about heartworms. The shelter staff assured me that they would cover all the expenses of his heartworm treatment and that he would be just fine. I took him home for a long weekend sleepover and confirmed the following Monday that I would move forward with adoption. You can tell this shelter really cares about the animals that end up there because everyone I spoke to about my pup was beyond thrilled that he was finally getting adopted. You could hear the excitement in their voices. The morning I came back to finalize the adoption, the volunteer who greeted me was so happy about the news that she even gave me a big hug. It really touched me so much to know that despite the horrible things my dog has undoubtedly experienced prior to ending up at Sugar Land Animal Services, at least he was extremely well cared for and loved during his time there. During the sleepover, they provide all the food he will need as well as offered a crate, a leash, and even a harness. They feed their dogs Hill Science Diet, which is a great quality dog food. When you adopt your pet, they give you a folder of amazing coupons and vouchers that you can use immediately. They also provided me with the antibiotics for his heartworm pre-treatment and insisted that I call back if there were any issues or concerns. They really delivered on that promise because about a week after he came officially came home, he started vomiting frequently, had loud rumbles in his tummy, and stopped eating his food. I reached out to Sugar Land Animal Services immediately and they arranged for me to take him for a check up at a partnered animal hospital. Turns out he had giardia, which was treated with some antibiotics, probiotics, and special food. I just took my pup to another vet hospital for his heartworm treatment last week and the vet tech from Sugar Land Animal Services (I believe her name was Katy) was super diligent about keeping in touch with me the whole time regarding his status, updates, etc. I couldn't have had a better experience with adopting my dream dog! Big thank you to the entire staff here, everyone that I met and spoke with was super friendly and you can tell they really care about their job and about taking care of the animals. Absolutely horrible, the staff are not friendly, me and my boyfriend brought my dog to be sheltered and as they were saying they couldn't accept her, another family in the lobby happened to say they wanted her and I started talking to them and the front desk lady interrupted me rudely and proceeded to say, you guys must step outside to do that we don't do that in here. We stepped outside and 5 minutes later she came outside with another lady and they both said get from this area, then 10 minutes later while we're in the parking lot, she proceeded to come outside with 4 staff and 2 security guards telling us to get out knowing they had already called police apparently because they just pulled in the parking lot, they acted as if me talking to another family about giving them my dog was such an inconvenience and did the absolute most. I called to find out what to do with a dog I found and FIVE times I was hung up on after they said okay give me a moment let me see what it says or some other BS along those lines. This is NOT acceptable. I'm trying to help save a stray or lost dog and this is the service y'all provide to the city! Absolutely unacceptable. Y'all should be ashamed. I adopted my sweetheart from here. Honestly, i have no complaints! When I finalized Pumpkins adoption, they were very professional and quick about the process, and they also lowered her rate to $20 instead of $50. That included all her shots, microchip, and spay. I also loved that they let newbies take home small goodies. My dog caught kennel cough shortly after being adopted, and since they don't knowingly adopt out sick pets, they covered vet fees to get her better! They really want the best for their animals and I can tell they really care. Thank you for making this process so much easier than most places for me and my Pumpkin. read more

Do not waste your time. They are purposefully rude and just do t give a damn. I found a kitten in the middle of the road, bleeding from its head. I mapped the nearest animal shelter and drove here. The kitten, in fear had lost control of its bowel movements and out of fear, scratched and bit me. So I was literally covered in blood and cat poop, they asked me where I found the cat. Apparently that intersection belongs to the Missouri City Shelter so they told me to go take the cat there. I should have just said I found it closer and one of the ladies says," It's wrong to lie, but if you choose to live like that..." In front of not one, not two, but SIX employees just standing around. I understand now why people see injured animals and do nothing. Because of places like this. FYI, the gentleman at the Missouri City was very professional. Don't waste your time with Sugar Land animal shelter. read more

Our experience here was excellent from start to finish. We found two cats we wanted to adopt at Petsmart. They put us in touch with Trisha at the shelter who informed me the cats had already been adopted. I was heartbroken! She invited me to come to the shelter and see if I could find another pair of kittens.....and I was so sad I almost didn't go. But I did and I found the cutest, sweetest, prettiest pair of 5 month old kittens! They are well socialized, loving and have glossy coats. I was really impressed with the cleanliness of the facility and the care that was given to the animals. Everyone we encountered was friendly and super busy-animals are always being fed, cleaned and played with. We took our kittens home for an overnight stay and we knew they were for us. I took them back in and they were microchipped. Robbie had all my paperwork ready and set up an appointment for their neuter/spay (and they use my vet, Dr. Hendrix, which is awesome because he is great and I am very picky about my animals). They sent us home with all of the vaccine info, food, toys, blankets and litter. We also received coupons from Petsmart and a free pizza promo code from Papa Johns! Nice touch! I am so happy with our sweet babies and so glad that we found this shelter. We had been to SPCA (nice&clean but few kittens) and BARC (in a terrible neighborhood and a huge wait to adopt). I came 8 hours away to Texas for a work trip! My brother found these 3 kittens in really bad shape stuff molded to their eyes so I gave them some milk and removed the stuff from their eyes. I called this place and they said I could bring them then said I could not because it wasn't in their "jurisdiction". I get that but I also told the woman that I had NO WHERE ELSE to take these kittens and I'm in a hotel that I can't bring them into So I would have to leave them outside because I have NO CHOICE and this woman straight up told me I could go to jail for saying that on a recorded line. All I have been trying to do all day is help these kittens. Do not recommend this place!!! read more

I actually started coming here as a volunteer and was extremely surprised at how well each animal was taken care of, including their nutria. They all get play time and are really taken care of and treated properly if they have problems. I locked eyes on this one tri colored dog the first day I volunteered and after a few times volunteering, I had to take him home. He was well taken care of and had all of his up to date shots AND they took care of the neutering. I think the 100 dollar adoption fee is well worth it. IMO it should be more with all the care they get. If I hear that someone is looking for a new pet, I recommend this shelter in an instant! They are also no kill!! This is a great shelter. They let you take any animal over for a 'sleepover' for up to five days before the actual adoption. The volunteers there are very friendly compared to the staff. This was my first time going to any animal shelter and overall they are a nice shelter. The cats are well taken care off, and played with during the day by the volunteers. The downside is that I wish the staff was a little more friendly when it comes to adopting a cat because if you really want to find home for the animals the first thing is to be nice to the customers because in return we are also looking for a loving pet to have. read more

We have visited numerous rescue shelters over the years. I have never been to one that was as clean and organized as Sugar Land Animal Services. The staff were all friendly and helpful. There were more employees present than I've ever seen in an animal shelter. They were cleaning, assisting people looking for pets and loving on and caring for the animals. They had a huge selection of cats, dogs and rabbits. The cages had plenty of space and comfort for the animals. It was more like an animal hotel. We went there to view a dog we saw on PetFinder, but found a different one more fitting for us. The staff were all very patient with us while we visited with multiple pets. We were also able to take our first choice home with us on a "trial" basis before doing paperwork or exchanging monies. They just copied my driver's license and had me sign one form. It was easy peasy and pleasant. We really lucked out and found our trial to be quite successful. I called them the next day (even though we still had another day to decide) and told them we decided to adopt. They got the paperwork ready for us quickly and just as friendly as ever. The cost of the adoption doesn't even cover their costs. In fact, it doesn't even come close. They truly just want to find these animals a good home, and they do so with their hearts. I couldn't be more pleased with their facility and our ultimate results. read more

i will not let this go. this animal shelter has never been anything but unprofessional. not only i, but my friends are animal lovers and will stop on the side of the road if we find a lost dog. this has happened twice now to just me, finding dogs and trying to bring them in. They are not attentive, so rude and degrading, was trying to gaslight my father as if it was his fault he tried to save a dog off the street. the pulled out this bs rule about where we found the dogs is not in their district. WHAT DOG SHELTER TURNS AWAY DOGS???? these people make my blood boil and i am not the only one other friends tried to bring in a husky they found and we're rudely turned away and told to go to a different shelter 20 minutes away. this place needs to be bought out by real animal lovers. because the people that run this place are assholes pieces of shit who just want a good tax write-off. i won't stop til this place is shut down or i have even thought about buying out the place myself. it's just appalling to me how these people can call themself a shelter, and make us drive farther away from where animals owners might be. i will be taking further actions against them. they better count their days. read more

We recently relocated to the area when our cat ran away. We went to every shelter we could think of distributing flyers and following up. Sugar Land Animal Services was the closest and one of the first places we visited. While there, I saw this sweet little grey tabby purring and rubbing up against her kennel for attention. Her name was Sarafina, and she was the sweetest cat (right next to my former cat). A month later, we stopped by and I couldn't believe she was still there! We never did find our old cat, so we decided to take her for a sleepover. During sleepovers you can take them home and see if they adjust. We have two dogs, so it is important that everyone get along. After 4 days, she was taking naps with the dogs on the bed. Here is why this shelter is the best: 1. Lots of variety! I didn't see the dog area, but if you are looking for a cat, they come in all shapes and colors (orange, white, grey, black/white, black, brown, calico, stripes, kittens, adult cats). Sarafina was an adult cat with the heart of a kitten! 2. The animals are socialized. Each cat is taken out of their kennel and played with. There are plenty of volunteers that devote their time to this. 3. You don't have to fill out a form just to look at a cat or dog. I ran into this problem at the SPCA. Too much bureaucracy for me. 4. No long, slow moving lines to stand in. This was another problem at the SPCA. Overall this is a place where you can go, take a look at the animals, play with them, take them home for a trial run, and adopt if you wish. They pay to have the animal fixed (excluding medication costs) at a local vet hospital. Microchipping is also included and is done on the spot if you are adopting. The adoption fee for our cat was $85, which is about $20 more than the SPCA, but the quality of the service is worth it. This is a little known shelter, but I highly recommend it to everyone looking to adopt! P.S. To find the place: After turning onto Gillingham Lane off of highway 90 you make a left ( I believe it is the first left). Go to the end of that little road. It's the building with the red awnings over the windows. Or you can just follow the signs to "Animal Services." read more

Awful experience. My husband found a stray cat minutes away from this location. They refused to take it in because technically we live on the border of two districts. I cannot believe how they can refuse an animal in their area due to a technicality. We live off Eldridge in fort bend district. 7 minutes away! Rude employees who obviously don't care about the animal. Why would I drive 30 minutes across town to take the animal further away from where it's possible owners live. read more

We adopted our second dog from Sugar Land Animal Services. We saw his listing on Petfinder and went over to meet him. The staff are super friendly and organized. The facility clean and animals are well cared for. We adopted our baby for just a small fee that covered his vaccinations, neutering and microchipping. This was the best adoption experience ever. The people who work here are incredibly rude . They are not welcoming at all, and always are rude when asked questions . I have been here a couple of times looking for a kitten and every time I come the lady who works in the cat room asks me if I'm serious about adopting or is rude everytime I ask her questions. We found 3 stray kittens in our neighborhood and took them to the Animal Services. We only recently learned Sugar Land had a no-kill animal shelter and am so glad that the city has a budget for the facility. The place is very clean and organized. The staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful. I hope more people know about this place so that they will adopt the adorable animals there. It's a great place to volunteer as well. This is a great shelter. They have a "sleepover policy" meaning you have to take the animal home for 3-5 days and be sure it's the right animal for you before you actually adopt it. This keeps people from adopting an animal that turns out to be the wrong fit for their family. I've been volunteering there over three years and everyone who comes in loves the "sleepovers". read more
