I went Easter Sunday to celebrate my daughter's birthday. I managed to find parking a block away even though when I drove up it seemed impossible. The crab cakes are huge, the mango slaw and drinks were delicious! The cabbage was not to my liking, it had no flavor. The hostess and our server, Akin, were great, however it was freezing and it took 1.5hrs. to get our drinks. We ate with our coats on. Came here last Saturday for my besities bday. At first I was worried because the service and staff were friendly which is not a good thing for Caribbean restaurants (if you know, you know). The front part of the restaurant has a better vibe for my preference because its dimly lit and more of a loungy feel. The escorted us to the back section as we were a group of 5, to the BRIGHTLY lit back which felt underwhelming when it came to the decor and vibe. Anywho we most of ordered the Jamalasi Snapper which was delicious! And the BIGGEST shock of it all, even their macaroni pie was the best ive had because again, if you know Caribbean restaurants, you know how bad macaroni pie usually taste at most, well in my case all, prior to here. The Calypso Wings were also good. The waiter Akim was a gem! Great service and personality! Only reason I wont give it 5 stars is because I ordered a Hugo Spritz (not Hugo 75, which is what they had on their menu) and it was served in the wrong glass and was somewhat warm. I didn't request a change but didnt order any more drinks after that. Only a few places know to make this perfectly. Another reason is they were out of a lot of items including sweet plantains and oxtail (typical Caribbean restaurant behavior). Lastly, their billing system! The charge us tax if we pay with card. Not feeling that. The tax should not be my responsibility. Also, keep in mind that gratuity is 20% automatic for 2 or more which is hilarious. This place is a hidden gem! If you like soca and dancehall music this is the place for you. Who doesn't want to be serenaded while partaking a meal that checks all the boxes. Wow. Idk if I came on a good day, but they had a $65 dinner for two. Two appetizers, two entrees, one dessert & two wines per couple. I had to ask three times & two different people to make sure I was hearing right and they didn't skimp on the portion! I was so stuffed I had to take the coconut bread pudding to go and half of my salmon/mashed potato entree. The four jumbo shrimp with sweet plantain & a green tamarind sauce was fulfilling & delicious. The Prosecco was perfect with a dried orange slice, making the whole experience seamless. The music was good at the place. We opted to dine outside because the weather was wonderful. Caribbean music was playing through the speaker which we enjoyed during our dining experience. Service was absolutely fantastic and professional the entire time. They made it even more special when they knew that I was celebrating my birthday. Chileeeeeee! So I will give them a true chance BUT the bar better stop playing! I visited this establishment for the first time on a Monday night for a party. It was for Cree's bday. The DJ was good. The bar???? I asked for a drink menu they showed me a food menu. We just wanted something to nosh on since we planned to drink. Fries were $9. I said no thank you. I asked again for a drink menu. They said they didn't have one and that they can make any mixed drink. I ordered a rum and coke and a can of ginger ale. Why did the bartender tell me $15 for the rum and coke- that wouldn't have been a problem if it was a regular sized cup. Not to mention she filled my cup with ice to the top, the cup was a small dollar tree cup that you rinse your mouth out with in the bathroom. The can of soda was $5. I came here this past weekend for a birthday brunch with friends! The indoors is very nicely decorated with lots of light bright colors and gold accents. We checked in for our reservation and went to the back. FYI, there is a front room and a back room. The brunch menu is pretty simple, however, keep in mind they don't have a bottomless option. So we opted to do a rum punch pitcher and the jerk wings to start. There was a delayed timeframe in which we got water and the rum punch. We received the wings first before the water and our rum punch. The rum punch was good, there could've been a bit more punch in it. When it came to the timing of the food it was pretty on point. The wings were extremely delicious. The meat fell off the bone and they were seasoned well. As a lover of spicy food, the spice is there, so if you aren't someone who can't tolerate spicy food, maybe have them tone it down for you (if possible). For my entree, I had the calypso fried chicken and waffles with a side of macaroni pie. So, I will say the sauce on the chicken is soooo good! I requested dark meat, and my friend ordered the same thing (without a request), and his chicken portion was a bit more than mine. In addition to this, my waffle was a bit soft. The macaroni pie I was a bit disappointed in, it did taste good when dipped with the calypso sauce. The chicken carried the meal. I tried a bite of the mango shrimp which was very good as well. We ended up getting these complimentary shots that were a combination of sweet, spicy, and a bit strong. There were a bunch of emotions behind the shot, but I enjoyed it. Then came the birthday cake! The presentation was cute! It was a chocolate lava cake and it was pretty good! I just felt like the cake was falling apart a bit too easily. If your a fan of Sugarcane in downtown Brooklyn you will easily fall in love with its sister restaurant Sugard. I was surprised that such a cute spot was nestled in the heart of the Caribbean community of East Flatbush. The Rogers Avenue entrance is the tea room/lounge, cute for large parties or a afterwork vibe. The Newkirk entrance is decorated nicely with browns and gold's and looks like when its warmer will provide outdoor dining and we were told that they have a live dj on Saturdays. We sat in the back room which was spacious, nicely decorated and had a dj. Our waitress Diamond was great, very friendly & attentive. I started with the spicy mango chow margarita, it was heavy, just tasted like a mango margarita, no spice, no chow flavor. I switched to the sorrel basil mojito which was better, not as sweet. Hard wings have been common in all the restaurants I've been to lately due to them probably being from old tough chickens because they are so big. Crab cake was full of real crab, but could use a little more heat, zing, and seasoning. This restaurant is in my Friday rotation and I will continue to return. The flavors from the chandon-bene and mango honestly reminded me of the dish -- however this is too sweet of a drink. While I was anticipating for this to be the trini version of a spicy marg -- I was hoping for it to have a little more spice. If you like sweet drinks then you might love this. To start with we got the jerk wings and the mango bacchanal shrimp. I wasn't expecting the shrimp to be fried but the mango sauce that it came with added a nice level of sweetness. The jerk wings were by far some of the best i've ever tasted. Packed with SO much flavor and paired super well with this honey mustard like dipping sauce. For my entree I went with the jambalaya shrimp and got a side of macaroni pie and rice and peas. Their rice and peas is like a pelau (which immediately brought back memories of sunday dinner at my grandmas house). If you grew up in a Caribbean household, (specially a trini one) the flavors of some of the dishes here are bound to evoke nostalgia. Everything was 10/10 from the food to the decor to the space.
