We stopped at Sugarpine Drive-In for lunch after Multnomah Falls and enjoyed it overall. The albacore torta and Larch Mountain ice cream were both delicious, and my SIL loved her Cuban pulled pork sandwich and Mauna Loa Volcano ice cream. My husband's waffle grilled cheese, though, was pretty disappointing, sad looking and tasted mid. The line was long, but understandable for such a popular spot. There's lots of outdoor seating plus some indoor seating, and I loved that they had crayons and coloring pages for kids. The staff were nice and the atmosphere was great. My main complaint is the mandatory 20% service charge. I understand the intention behind supporting staff, but it feels excessive when you order in line, pick up your food at the counter, and bus your own table, especially since the food is already pretty pricey. Still, most of the food was great and I recommend trying it.
Had a picnic at Glenn Otto park and ended the day with a drive thru experience at Sugarpine. The walk up line was LONG and I just wanted some ice cream so the drive thru worked best. 4 cars in front of me, took 15 min. Mauna Loa Sundae - chocolate soft serve with crunch hard shell. Macadamia brittle was delish .. I added Honeycomb for more crunch but it was a bit much. I loved this, it was enough to share too. Not a fan of the auto 20% charge! $13 for ice cream is a bit much.
Our friends highly recommended this spot so we made a point to stop here on our way into Portland. The scenery was beautiful surrounding the drive-in, which also has some indoor and patio seating. They have a nice big parking lot and it was free to park when we went on a Monday. There is a trail and playground nearby so it was nice to enjoy our ice cream after over there. I loved how they had coloring pages and crayons at the counter for the kids to kill some time while waiting for the food! I loved that they had some Asian inspired flavors on the menu which I was not expecting! I kept it simple with a grilled cheese which they serve on a waffle and I also added pulled pork for a small upcharge. The tomato soup pairing was so delicious and it was such a comforting meal in the foggy overcast weather. For dessert, we tried the rainbow brite seasonal sundae, which had these ripe mangoes and ube swirl inside. It was so cute with the little rainbow jellies! The vanilla soft serve itself was really good so I think I would've been happy whether it was a plain sundae or completely loaded like this one. We also tried the guava cheesecake cookie, which was huge and I loved the guava cheesecake filling. Sugarpine did not disappoint and it definitely lived up to the hype. It's a little bit outside of Portland, but definitely worth the drive for the scenery and the food!
Very crowded but Sugarpine drive in is truly the perfect location to grab a bite, a sweet treat, or a drink after a day at the gorge. I haven't been in a while but their menu has definitely elevated with many vegan options. The line was long on a Thursday as the parking lot was crowded. Once in a cool moon was delicious! All plant based and wow the ube cake was my absolute favorite, along with the blueberry soft serve. So refreshing!
Food: The regular price of their sundaes are about $10 but really $12 once you include the 20% tax. The flavors were good though. We had the Chery Colada parfait which was a vanilla with cherry and pineapple and the Once in a Blue Moon which is a blueberry ube mix. The cuban pork and boriqua bbq chicken sandwhiches were approx $18/$22 with tax and $17/$21. So you can easily spend over $100 for a family of 4 stopping for lunch. No judgement, just letting you know what to expect and you can decide if it's worth it for you. Service: Non existent in the sense that you stand in line order at a window and seat yourself if you can find a spot, your food comes up at a window, and you throw your own trash out afterwards, but they charge you 20% extra on every items. Why not just raise your prices 20% and put a sign that says no tips? I guess employees would earn more money when it's busy on a Sunday but make less when its slow? To each his own. I'm just letting you know what to expect. Ambiance: It's a walk up sanwhich and soft serve ice cream food place in a great location by the Sandy river. We came on a Sunday and it happened to be their Anniversary celebration so they had a dj and they were doing a collab with some burger place. On this day, it was either pulled pork or bbq chicken sandwhich options or the burgers and the sign said food could take as long as 55 minutes in addition to the line that was over 30-45min long. So we opted for their sundae specials for $8 and burgers because we assumed the burgers would be cooked faster while we were still in line for the ice cream. But NO! Despite no line and nothing being cooked when we ordered, the burgers weren't ready until long after we got our ice creams and finished. Burgers were actually a bargain! Only $48 for 3. So that was only $16 each. Parking was awful. Seating was not much better, we were able to find a table to share with others. I had been wanting to come here for years seeing them on IG and here on yelp but don't make it out to Troutdale very often. So I was happy to finally try them out. Unfortunately I don't know if it is always a 1-2hr commitment. I probably wouldnt make a trip just to come here, but if you are on the Sandy river next door, an ice cream to share is probably not a bad deal.
Visited on a holiday weekend expecting a long wait but this drive in knows how to handle a crowd! The line is efficient and ordering is easy (especially when everything that you see coming out of the kitchen looks delicious). The pork sliders and Caesar with shrimp were made with fresh and flavorful ingredients and I can't wait to try their next season menu! Second round was sharing every specialty sundae and we could not decide on a favorite! Plus the presentation of each one was absolutely stunning! I also ended up leaving with merchandise, their graphic designers are killing it!
This is just a fun spot by the river and it stays busy. I wish I was with my kids when I went here but the combo of blackberry, peaches, and the cinnamon for their summer special was chefs kiss
Make this your new summer spot. Impressed is an understatement when it comes to this place. This is a killer restaurant masquerading as a simple drive-in. My partner took me here on a surprise date and it is one of my new favorite spot! We tried the pulled Porcetta & Harissa sandwiches. Both were incredibly flavorful, creative, and surprisingly high-quality. The soft serve "Larch Mountain" also ROCKED our world. Definitely the best soft serve I've had. On the simpler side, their Gin Spritz cocktail was very balanced and floral. The service team were also incredibly friendly, organized, and efficient. They even made good on a mistake with our order. Lastly, don't sleep on the hats. I got one & it's my new favorite.
We were headed to Sunriver from the Portland area and decided to stop and get lunch on the way. This place had been recommended so why not? Located conveniently off the freeway and on the Sandy River, this little drive in has lots of indoor and outdoor seating. You can drive through and order or stand in line to order. They have lots of ways of ordering and convenience. It's a very pretty environment to eat lunch. Service was super friendly and they have lots of staff! The menu is seasonal. We ordered the waffle grilled cheese with tomato soup (sandwich comes with kettle chips) and the antipasto salad, as well as two giant cookies for later. The food was delish! I don't think I'd order the tomato soup without the sandwich. The salad was a small size--heads up. But the food was plenty for me and the hubs. You can order soft serve ice cream when you pick up your food order (you can pretty much order it all kinds of different ways--they want you to have the ice cream). They have 4-5 flavors, also seasonal, including plant based. They have magic shell in different flavors and sauces and toppings. Gourmet stuff and delicious! The ice cream was creamy and delish! We had vanilla with butterscotch shell and hazelnut waffle cone bites. Definitely worth a visit!
The important pieces: The environment is what is so amazing, it's at a park, it's beautiful, and they have yummy ice cream. The food is really good, but I had the shrimp roll, and some of the ingredients seemed like they were there to add an ingredient not add a flavor. Otherwise great stuff, it was a little pricey.
The only thing I'm bummed about is the fact that I didnt know about this sooner!! Sugarpine is awesome. After a good morning filled of hiking, we stopped by for lunch to refuel and were amazed. We had the Pulled Porchetta, Sugarpine Salad, and made sure we saved room for dessert because their icecream looked insane (it was). The food looked almost as good as it tasted. The sandwich was packed with flavor and kept you coming back for more. The salad was fresh and had great ingredients. For dessert we had The Larch Mountain Sundae and it was out of this world. They have some seating in the main dining area but the majority of it is covered outside. FYI, you order at a window and then they bring food out to you so it is self serve for the most part. They also automatically add 20%. Great spot on your way back into Portland. Highly recommend!!
Went on a Friday around 1:00pm. Walk up line was about 30 deep. Took about 20 min to order. Also has a drive thru. Ice cream comes out pretty quick. We got strawberry/pistachio I think. It was perfect. Strawberry purée was fresh. Lil salty taste with pretzel. Big cake like pieces. Yum. Lager beer was really really good. Ordered the chicken Marrekesh wrap. Forgot a photo! Wrap was pretty tough and I ended up just eating insides. Chicken was wonderfully seasoned and tender. Pretty onion heavy for me. Easy to pick off. Would try pulled pork next time. Seating inside is pretty tight. Outside has picnic tables and open areas where people brought blankets to hang. Would return.
Food: 4.5/5 Service: 4/5 Seating areas: 4/5 Located in a spot away from city, perfect little spot to stop by returning from hikes nearby or on your way into town. Service when ordering was great but just okay when grabbing our food. The food was tasty. I got pulled pork sliders - Pulled Porchetta. The portion was perfect for my post-hike appetite. Pulled pork was juicy, aioli was the perfect sauce they could have paired it with. Cookies looked amazing. Our soft serve ice creams were delicious - would def come back for that! Lots of vegan friendly options & toppings for whatever you're in the mood for. I guess my complaints come down to: paying to park (but I also assume it's due to the park nearby), seating is self-seated BUT only after you order making it harder for larger groups, bathrooms available being the park bathrooms down the path, and the 20% auto- service fee /gratuity for you to pick up your food promptly, grab your own water and buss your own table without any actual customer service outside of what you get when you pick up your food. Not trying to criticize their business model, just not understanding what the service fee is for & why it's not just embedded into their prices. I guess for my complaints, I'll do drive thru next time.

Respectfully, we understand what a Cubano is. That is precisely why…
This place has been hyped up a lot, so much so that I made a special trip out here to try the soft serve and see what it was all about. The situation is like this, they really don't have their own parking at all. You have to pay for parking at the nearby park which is also where the bathrooms are. However, you can skip all this by going through the drive through, but it is a bit chaotic as you try to follow all the signs on how to get into the drive through, but be extra careful as kids and adults are paying attention and walk into the drive thru lane without looking. Since there is a wait for the drive through, they are smart to have QR codes to look at the menu while you are in line. They do have done picnic table setups for sitting down but also some tables inside Sugarpine. I think we waited about 10 min on a Sunday afternoon so it wasn't so bad of a wait. They do warn you that they serve a 20% service fee on top of your order. However, I don't understand why. I got no table service. Basically a guy took my order and handed me my ice cream cup. I usually give 20% for real table service. Not sure if this is one of those charges they use to give the employees certain benefits? It was unclear to me. I'll be honest, I was very disappointed in the soft serve offerings. It was chocolate or vanilla or a swirl but there was a plant based offered that is a little more which is a bit more interesting. We got one chocolate vanilla swirl and one blueberry ube kids cup (5 oz) The had coconut vanilla as well, but I did not try it. I paid my just over $10 charge which wasn't too bad, but since there is no place to eat these I drove into downtown Troutdale to Harlow Park where it is free to park and plenty of covered tables. While I enjoyed my soft serve, it wasn't really anything special to me that I couldn't find in other Portland locations. In fact, I've had better. I do appreciate the family run business and the local kids that work there, I think it is a great thing, but honestly toss lace seems best for a stop on the way back from a day at the Gorge, else I won't go out of my way for it. Nothing wrong with it as I said, it tasted fine, but it did t blow my mind either. I did not get to try their BBQ offerings so I can't speak for that but it did small good. I know that have $10 offerings for dessert that have toppings and such but for me the base or foundation of it all is more important to me. read more

I really enjoyed Sugarpine Drive-in! I got several items, including the seasonal Mauna Loa sundae (added matcha magic shell and miso caramel sauce), the grab and go Wagyu bologna sandwich, and a cup of the heirloom tomato soup. We brought our water bottles, so we didn't have to buy any drinks, but the drinks look really good! They have a thorough beer, cider, wine, menu, and really cute frozen margs. Anyway, I was really happy with everything I ordered! The sundae was so good! You can tell that they put a lot of care into the ingredients they make, like the macadamia-oat brittle was full of ingredients and brought a fun texture and a lot of flavors to the sundae. The chocolate magic shell had Kona coffee in it, which was a fun, tiny crunch and another good flavor. The Thai tea whip was the "cherry on top." I highly recommend adding the miso caramel sauce and Matcha magic shell! So yummy! Just as I said with the sundae, the sandwich and tomato soup also seemed to both have quality ingredients. The tomato soup was delicious, and the flavor was gorgeous with the roasted tomatoes and chive oil, though a bit rich. I definitely finished it, but I do think that having some of my sister's grilled cheese to dip into it was better than eating it on its own. The sandwich I got had the softest milk bread and was just a classic deli sandwich, but you can tell that again, they used quality ingredients. I felt like I got my money's worth for everything I paid for. The parking situation was great, we parked in the overflow lot across from the establishment. There was a five dollar charge, and if you show your receipt when returning to your vehicle, they give you a refund. Waiting in line wasn't terrible, we waited maybe 15 minutes? The only thing is that they have a ramp leading to the patio and a long line is inevitable, and the ramp is narrow, so if somebody wants to pass through with a stroller or a wheelchair, everybody on the ramp has to move off to let them through. When we got up to the front to order, something happened with their system, and they had to pause orders for a couple minutes, which didn't bother me, but I could see how maybe that might bother someone else. Either way, they were very nice throughout the wait. There are a lot of people there seemingly throughout the day, and we had a group of five adults and four kids, but we were able to find a picnic table with enough room easily. The picnic tables are also nicely set up with good canopies and the table itself felt pretty clean. Lots of Instagrammable foods and photos op spaces. read more
Very busy! I'd recommend only going on weekdays or right when they open if you can only make it on a weekend. They are busy for good reason. Food and ice cream are excellent. It's a unique menu that you really should try. Price point is a bit steep, but it's clearly not stopping anyone from visiting. Good place to bring tourists to, I'd say. read more
Being a 40 minute drive from home it definitely took a very specific day for me to want to go here and I finally had the chance to check it out this past week. Unfortunately I would say that I am quite disappointed in what I had here. The sandwich was super oily and didn't have any flavor that really cut the oil. In addition the price was quite high for what it was and they auto included a 20% convenience fee which I did not like. What brought it back a bit for me was the sundae. It was definitely some good soft serve and I would for sure come back again just for that if I was in the area, though it definitely doesn't warrant a long drive back. Service was great and the outdoor seating felt nice and clean. read more

I was not impressed with my visit here. If you were thinking of typical drive-in food (simple burgers, fries, milkshakes), this is definitely not the place to go. When ordering inside, it felt dirty as there were so many flies which made it feel unappetizing to eat inside. The person taking my order wasn't very kind, either. Luckily, there is some picnic table seating outdoors. I ordered vanilla ice cream (expensive!) and it was good, but I would recommend you check out the menu before you stop by. read more

I visited Sugarpine on a cold Sunday afternoon and saw a long line for both the walk-in AND drive-thru. Despite the weather, there were really people standing outside. After having the Chicago Beef Cheek Bourguignon and Blood Orange Sherbet, I can totally see why they would. My party and I decided to go through the drive-thru. It was a bit of a wait but our order was long so it's understandable. The Blood Orange sherbet had that great tangy flavor I've been craving so that fulfilled mt sweet tooth. The name is a bit intimidating but the flavor was sweet. As for the Bourguignon, I feel like the chef was previously a sharpshooter/marksman because the food sure hit the spot. The bread wasn't too tough, the meat was tender, and the jus added extra to an already amazing meal. If I HAD to change something, I'd love for them to come to California. read more
I love that the menu rotates! It's nice to try something new and we enjoyed it for the most part. I thought the prices were fair but a few of our group felt it was more expensive for what it was. The waiting was difficult even on a cold weekend day in the winter, as the space is tight and you have to try to find a spot to wait in while the staff go off a waitlist for an open table. The tables outside were cold despite the heater on an especially windy day. But the wait for food seemed less than in the summer (maybe 30 minutes versus an hour plus), as was the line (but it was still popping!). Everyone enjoyed the larch mountain sundae and the moose tracks sundae. The blood orange croissant one was also good but not a crowd hit. The salmon chowder was well liked, but the beef cheek bourginon was not for me with the pick of cheese though I can imagine others would like it! Looking forward to our next visit. read more
This is a must try type of location if you're visiting Oregon. The menu rotates, so I'd recommend trying something seasonal and add a grilled cheese to it! Also, add a kids size (or larger) seasonal sundae to any order. They are usually a collab with a local chef - so it's a must have! Service is always prompt and friendly, the restaurants always tidy and inviting, and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. It can get really busy, so go early! read more

First time going to sugarpine for food, and I must say it's just as good as their sundaes! Got the caul of the wild plant based sandwich and it was one of the best vegan sandwiches I've ever had. Cauliflower was roasted to perfection and all the toppings and aioli that came in it were incredible. Also got a bergamot ale which was so unique and refreshing. As always, incredibly friendly staff and great service. They know what they're doing at sugarpine! read more

Located about 30 mins outside of downtown PDX, Sugarpine is a great spot to stop by for lunch before or after your hike on the Gorge. Or grab lunch to go, head down to the Sandy River, and spend the afternoon soaking up the sun! Such a perfect way to spend your day. The food is always amazing and ever rotating, the soft serve is a must for a hot sunny day, and I love that they have plant-based options too as I am lactose intolerant! The staff here are so so kind and have their service down to a science. There's almost always a line, but it does move fairly quickly. Order at the counter, take your buzzer and then find an available table if you're planning on eating there. They have limited indoor seating but lots of outdoor spaces to choose from. If you're looking for a quintessential Oregon summer day, start your day here! read more

flavorful and fresh food here with thoughtful selections of ingredients and recipes. i really enjoyed my tri tip sandwich here, the chimichurri sauce was a perfect complement to the meat which was seasoned well (not too salty!). my friend had this interesting vegan cauliflower burger that looked like fried chicken almost. we also split one of the fun sundaes and i found the soft serve icecream to be so creamy and delicious, reminding me of the icecream i've had in japan and taiwan. i would say this place is a must stop if you're driving through. with seasonal menu changes, there's always something new and fun to try! read more

We came in a Sunday afternoon after an amazing hike through some of Oregon's great waterfalls. Upon arrival we could see that this was a very popular attraction as the lineup went around the building. They smoke all their beef and pork in house which is really shines through their many featured dishes. The lineup time to table was approximately 45 minutes and everything we had was well worth the wait. Every dish seems to have its own unique flavour so it's hard to describe. I'd just say leave room for as much as you can. Best to share as many dishes as possible. The auto 20% gratuity added on top kind of threw me off but it is what it is. read more

Sugarpine is such a staple pitstop whenever I have friends and family wanting to visit Multnomah Falls. Thankfully during this fall afternoon it wasn't so busy when I stopped by. This time I ordered tomato soup and their waffle grilled cheese. Simple, but perfect for this fall weather. Thankfully we had a chance to sit in their covered patios as it wasn't as busy as previous times I've been. read more

Being completely honest the food is not worth a single penny. The beef sandwich the beef was raw with lots of fat on it, and zero flavor. They charge you a dollar for a pickle spear and don't even tell you. On top of that, there is a 20% added mandatory gratuity for a place that you serve yourself, clean up after yourself and pick up your own food. So what am I paying 20% for? Ridiculous, would never come back again. If I could rate it a zero I would. read more
Very cute drive thru ice cream and light food spot in a park. I think it was be a good spot for a date. We found this spot by accident and it was very busy. They had delicious grilled cheese sandwiches (we got the original, not the fall themed one) and decent cider. The tomato soup was okay. The pulled pork sandwich with slaw was good but a little messy. They give you a little buzzer so you can walk away and then come back for food. Tip: the drive through is basically only drinks and ice cream. If you want any food, plan on going inside. It could be different when you go but while we were there, at least one car reversed out of the drive thru for that reason. Tip 2: bathrooms are in the park and are a bit of a hike, like 3 minutes away so plan for a walk. Tip 3: try to get a spot inside if you have more than one person in your group. While in line, all of the tables that had walls (inside and in the walled tent) got filled up. read more
This place was hyped up so much that we just had to go. Hubby got a meatloaf sandwich which was really tasty, and had shredded cabbage in it so it had a nice crunch. It also came with a side of sauce that originally I thought might've been tomato soup, but wasn't. Very unusual sauce, thick and really, really good tasting and very different. so I would say the meatloaf sandwich was a hit. I got the sweet potato that had miso and Parmesan cheese, etc. in it with bonito flakes on top. What we call sweet potato in New England is different than what they call sweet potato out here in Oregon. This was yellow flesh and different tasting, and very interesting. Though I wouldn't order it again, it was baked nicely. We had to try the ice cream for dessert, so we got three kitty sized. Was good but very expensive. 3 kid sized were $26. Our 3 lunches were also expensive. Everything has 20% added of course. Son got a plant-based sandwich that had squash and vegetables and roasted chickpeas and candied walnuts in it, and it was with some creamy sauce that was kind of yummy. Thick slices of Delicata squash and other veggies. This is not the must visit lunch place that I thought it was going to be. I'd recommend you skip this and find another place. read more
We visit Portland about once a year and Sugarpine is usually on the itinerary! It's a nice sweet treat especially on a warm day. There's a parking lot but it gets pretty busy so be mindful. I notice they always have an updated menu with specials so you'll always be able to try something new. The desserts are pretty decadent so pretty shareable in my opinion! Plenty of outside seating, would def split up the group to save a table while a few put in the orders. read more
We went for the apple month in collaboration with Kiyokawa Family Orchards & the food is was fantastic. We ordered the hot spiced apple cider, the orchard melt, the apple cider slushie float, bruleed sweet potato, and the Japanese beef curry rice bowl Price wise they do charge an automatic service charge (20%) which was fine with me. The only thing is the cashier definitely tried to upsell without mentioning it was extra which was kind of annoying. Hot spiced apple cider ($5 + $1 for kettle corn & cold foam whip) - was a little too sweet for my liking. Orchard melt ($15) - was delicious. The waffle was buttery, the pork belly was tender & the thinly sliced apple added a nice crunch. Apple Cider Slushie Float with Vegan Pumpkin-Maple ($10 + 2 for pumpkin maple soft serve) - the slushie was too icy. The pumpkin maple soft serve was alright. Bruleed Sweet Potato ($7) - would get again. The potato was so soft & the Parmesan miso butter added a unique taste. The herbs & bonito flakes made it aesthetically pleasing. You only get 1/2 the potato though. In the picture on the online menu it looks like you get both halves. Japanese Beef Curry Rice Bowl ($17) - perfectly for the crispy cold Oregon weather. Warm curry with sweet potato, carrot, onion, smoked brisket, pickled veggies & herbs. read more
Sugarpine is a loved gorge food stop and for good reason. It has a whimsical, old-timey feel with lots of seating (mostly outdoors). I came on a weekend and was prepared to wait, yet thankfully despite a line, I received the sundaes in 10 minutes, as they were extremely efficient. I got the seasonal tropic thunder sundae. The vegan pineapple and coconut soft serve it came with was tart, creamy, and not too sweet. I also loved the moist rum cake topping, which were big for cake bites. My boyfriend got the larch mountain sundae complete with the most decadent vanilla and chocolate soft serve. The overall presentation and creativity with the add ons for their sundaes is unmatched. I appreciate how sugarpine cultivates so many rotating seasonal menu items and am looking forward to coming back to try more! read more

There's indoor seating, but it's not very cold in there and they are closing early because of the heat! Check their instagram for updates!
