I'm not much one for sandwiches, but a friend recommended this shop to me. One a day my stomach went on crazy growling mode, I paid Lottie a visit. Entering the shop, you will be greeted by loud music. Be ready for that. You will have the option to dine outside, if the weather provides it and the seats are empty. The hosts are wonderful and very accepting with a positive attitude. Smiles and all. I ordered the Jim because it was the only sandwich I could eat. The majority of the sandwiches contain meat, so I would not recommend this for vegans or pescatarians. Jim was delicious and I consumed both halves of Jim flawlessly. Either hunger overruled me, or the sandwich was that satisfying. I do recommend the shop, but with limited options for non-meat eaters, I truthfully would rate Lottie and Zulas, 4.5. My tastes are likely just different as the reviews for this place speak for themselves. We had the Jimmy (as a salad). It was too smokier than I imagined but tasty. We also had the Vinny which was fine, a bit spicier than I thought it would be, but I'm a wimp. The service was fine, not overly friendly but adequate. The food is 4 stars, the service 3 starts, but the real bummer was all the plastic. Plastic container, plastic cups and we were eating in. They asked if it was to go and we said no, but everything came in plastic anyway. Really charming shop in the Eliot district. It's not on one of the main roads so never ventured out this way but glad we did this time after searching breakfast sandwiches on Yelp. No lot but parking is free in the area and across the library. Upon walking in you get to see the space is decorated with plenty of stickers and a mixture of different types of seating by the window, booths, and shared tables. It has such a vibe with the music too. It was our first time here and came at the cusp of breakfast/lunch so we asked the staff on their recommendations. We had to try their sausage on the bolo roll (thicker roll and recommended by staff vs. muffin) and the travis. Both sandwiches were well portioned and stacked. These sandwiches are soo unbelievably good! Ugh. I couldn't breathe while they were going down because I wanted them down so bad. I went into an altered state. I got the Ricky Italian and the bread was so crispy and the giardinara was so delicious and they warmed the meat so all the oils mixed together to soften the crispy bread so perfectly. My boyfriend got the Charlie. Flew into Portland and spotted this little gem as I was aimlessly driving around. Had the breakfast sandwich with sausage. It was a good sandwich and the sausage had solid flavor. I wasn't blown away but it is definitely worth coming back for. I'm sure the coffee here is excellent based on the clientele and reviews but unfortunately I don't drink coffee. They make great sandwiches! My wife and I stumbled upon this place while in North Portland. The menu is quite appealing. Warning: no substitutions. Regardless, there were plenty of good options. They also have side salads, like potato salad, for sale in small and larger containers. The ambiance is gritty by design, with stickers all over the tables, but not really on much else. The wait for the sandwich was longer than I would have expected (10-ish minutes), but the woman who took our order was extremely friendly. Their menu is stacked with delicious-sounding sandwich creations. From classics to crazy. We got a Mortadella Melt and the special Kitchen Sink Grinder to split and boy did we need to split them. These chonkers were big and stuffed with cheesy goodness, well-prepared meats, and a concoction of condiments of your dream. Seriously, the first bite into the Mortadella Melt and this spot became our number one sandwich place. The sourdough was toasted perfectly and every bite was just so dreamy with sweetness from the caramelized onions that paired so well with the fried mortadella and sauces. An out of body experience right here. The Kitchen Grinder was also very tasty. The roll was lightly toasted adding a nice crunch to the crust. Again, it's full of all sort of meat and gooey cheese, refreshed by the shredded cabbage and pickles. Still a solid sandwich but didn't quite blow us away as much as the melt. I was initially intrigued bc I thought it said smoked beef melt but upon the servers recommendation I went with it and was pleasantly surprised. Took one look at their website, salivated all over the pics, wiped my screen and said, "We're going here for lunch!" Here's the down low: ::: PARKING ::: Street parking. I did not see any Parking Kitty signs so we parked down the residential street nearby. An adjacent parking lot, across from Lotties, is a permit parking lot only. I wouldn't risk it. :::: SERVICE & DINING :::: No issues with service. The cashier dude was patient, but helpful as I took a lot of time deciding on which sammich to order. As for dining in, its really like a small cafe with only a few tables and plenty of stickers. Like a skate shop. Nothing fancy, but in general the dining area seemed fairly clean. ::::: N.E. GRINDERS ::::: "The #22" ($15) aka a Reuben with pastrami AND it's on marble rye! Its gotta be marble rye or it ain't a real Reuben. Kraut, Russian Island dressing, and melted Swiss cheese; GAWD it was love at first bite! And for the dill spear, they give you Bubbies. Gotta love Bubbies pickles! OH, and you know it's a good Reuben when you smell that toasted rye bread. "Operation Plunder Dome" ($18) aka the OPD, or simply their meatball sub. The six and eight inch subs were a few bucks cheaper, but I got the footlong, and shared the other half. This too was enjoyable! Marinara sauce, melted mozzarella and provolone cheese, ugh instant gratification! :::::: From L to Zula :::::: "L" for LOVE this shop! Love their sandwiches and subs and everything about them! I highly recommend giving them a try, even if you're not a local! It's a chill little shop with a $15 average sandwich price. There is one thing that stands out, and that's the record shop inside. I had the JEFF - moist chicken sandwich with mayo, mustard, red onion, AND bacon for crunchy smokiness and cranberry for brightness (& pretty) on sourdough. Sandwiches were SO generous. We could only eat half! We are looking forward to NEXT visit....Travis, Carl, Vinny, etc. Ambiance was artful and funky. Hip hop was too loud for us but certainly energizing. Orders are made at a counter and delivered to the tables wrapped in butcher paper (appropriately). Some folks ate in many took out or ate just outside.
