Not a bad restaurant. Very good flavors, just small portions. Smaller than we were expecting. Plus our waiter looked like Edward Norton in his Fight Club era. But the overall ambiance is very bookish because it's a bookstore and has a library as well. When they bring the check it's in a small children's book which I thought was endearing. super cute combination bookstore and restaurant! we went here just for a quick little treat and catchup with friends. the environment was super cute, and the service was great. focaccia: very normal, nothing to write home about. fluffy bread and good rise, pretty flavorful olive oil chocolate cake: some of the most moist and decadent chocolate cake i've had! paired with a really fruity and delicious olive oil, and a salty whipped cream that offered great contrast to the richness of the cake. ricotta peaches: pretty normal. nothing standout about either ingredient, kind of just tasted like sour cream. overall, chocolate cake was the best item, but the environment was a standout as well! read more

We came for lunch included with an Italian lesson through Collina Italiana - Italian Language and Cultural Center. I figure if Italians like it, it must be authentic. It's a charming space with children's books in English and Italian lining the walls with a bookstore and bathrooms in the cellar. Our waiter was attentive. We had a set menu. Our appetizers included cheese, salami, foccacia, and shishito peppers. For lunch I had the gazpacho. It was light and refreshing with fresh dill and peaches. My companions had the sandwiches which they liked. I thought they were light on filling and the bread was a little too thick. For dessert we had choices of affogato, mango sorbet or a generous portion of tiramasu. The only negative was the tiny print on the menu. read more

I had such a nice time here for brunch on a Sunday morning. West village is sleepier on Sunday mornings so availability was easy at 10:30 but don't quote me. I had the sullaluna ice tea which is a fresh cold tea with lemon juice that turns from blue to purple when added. I had the crostone and it was delicious. Ben is such a great director and managed everything from greeting, seating, serving, and checking out. He is fantastic and I can't wait to come back because of how kind he was. read more

I discovered Sullaluna through the Red Dining Book, and I'm so glad I did. It's a beautifully curated "bookstore-bistrot" that specializes in illustrated books and authentic Italian flavors. Besides good service, the food was mid. The pasta price point of $25-30 is literally shocking for the quality and taste you get. I have made better pasta at home and that's not a good thing because I'm not a great cook. The pastas were bland and the flavors just did not blend well. This place is just fine, it's quality Italian but you would hope it is quality given the prices. Nothing stood out too much - but I would say I enjoyed the apps much more than the main pasta entrees. We got the roasted brussel sprouts topped with pomegranates, the crocchettes, and the burrata. My personal favorite was the crocchettes with the burrata (w some fried artichokes) being the most plain but we enjoyed all of them. Among 3 people, we split 3 apps and 2 pastas. Sullaluna is part bookstore, part wine and cheese bar, with shelves of beautifully illustrated kids' books tucked all around that make it feel super cozy and welcoming to browse. I recently stopped in for a quick catch up with a friend before dinner. We shared the Charcuterie and Cheese Board and the Mint Herbal Infusion tea, which fit the setting, but the actual cheeses and meats were not quite my usual type. There was a bit of gaminess in the selections that my palate just did not love. I'd still come back just for the ambience though, and I do want to try the Guancia di Manzo. read more

We had a reservation at 5.30PM on a Tuesday, we arrived early and were promptly seated. The restaurant is a bistro/bookshop, and it's very nice. We only saw children's books, not sure if that's all they sell. We ordered two glasses of the house red wine, and it was OK. For appetizers we ordered the marinated olives and the tagliere salumi e formaggi (charcuterie board). The olives were kalamata olives in oil, which were fine, and the charcuterie board was good, especially the cheeses and the fig spread. For our entree we ordered the ravioli ricotta e porri (house-made ravioli stuffed with ricotta, leeks and lemon, tossed with Butter, Parmigiano and preserved Lemon), the NY strip steak cooked medium, and an order of cavole arrosto (roasted cabbage, parmesan dressing and focaccia crumble). The ravioli were not very flavorful, the flavor was very light and we could barely taste the leeks and lemon. The NY strip steak arrived a little too rare for our taste, and the roasted cabbage side was good. For dessert we got the torta all'ollio EVO e cacao (chocolate olive oil cake) and it dry, not as moist as an olive oil cake should be. Our server, Eggy, was great, he was friendly and knew the menu, he recommended we get the roasted cabbage, which we would not have ordered otherwise. This quaint restaurant in a bookstore is as unique as it sounds. Nestled in West Village, this place has a very cozy, eating in your own apartment feel. We ordered the fettuccine and bolognese pasta and both were delicious. The pasta was fresh and both sauces had flavor without being overpowering. We also ordered the tiramisu which had a nice balance of flavor to it. Overall the menu is fairly small but it feels like anything that is on the menu is delicious. Unassuming and quaint find in the west village. Sallaluna offers a fresh cuisine within a bookstore. With warming temps, this will ultimately be a popular destination given its open-to-air dining experience. Ordered the fried rice croquettes, gnocchi and orecchiette. Had a lunch reservation on the weekend and were seated on entry. The service was friendly though a touch slow. Was hoping to get another drink order around the middle but was unfortunately unable to get one in. We ordered three types of pasta which were all good. Portions weren't too big but I did leave generally satisfied. We also ordered a salad which was refreshing. The best part of this place is the ambiance. It tastes like home-made pasta and the portion is moderate- not like typical American portion Ambiance: 5/5 i personally love books so i love how they were able to make a book shop into a cafe / wine bar. The most adorable Italian bistro-bookshop combo! I would return for the ambiance alone. I love the soft lighting with the books-- the glow adds such a warmth and coziness. If you come you absolutely must venture downstairs to see the entire store. As for food, we ordered the gnocchi alla sorrentina and pastiera napoletana (sweet ricotta pie) for dessert. The gnocchi was good, I liked the sauce a lot and it was very cheesy. A tad on the mushy side for my taste, and I wish there was more basil. The pie was tasty. The orange flavor was quite strong. I'm not partial to citrusy desserts; if I had known this I would have ordered something else. It still enjoyed it though. I like how the crust reminded me of pound cake. Overall, I would return. I would love to try their cacio e pepe and their tiramisu. I'm dissapointed they took their pesto off the menu though. I came with a friend around 12:15 on Saturday and we were able to get a table immediately, though had we come 20 minutes later we probably would have had to wait. Sullaluna is my new favorite happy hour spot in the village! It's so cozy and the $9 aperol spritz for happy hour is one of the best I've ever had! The ambiance is amazing and I love how you are free to wander around the store(be sure to check out the collection of books in the basement as well!) and grab any book from their shelves(the Italian children's books are so cute!) to bring back to your table while waiting for your drinks to arrive. Finally got around to trying Sullaluna for dinner, but unfortunately, a less than stellar experience. The vibe was still warm and friendly, but service was lacking and food was hit or miss. Our server was kind, but dishes weren't cleared between courses, and she was sometimes hard to find. We ordered the cicchetti - basically three different bruchetta. They were all tasty enough, with a variety of purees and toppings, but we had no idea what we were eating. It would have been nice if we were informed. Also, the menu promised octopus, but there was none that I could see or taste. I ordered the ravioli, which our server explained came in a butter and sage sauce. The ravioli arrived in a somewhat gloppy cream sauce, no sage to be found. We got a very interesting radicchio salad - too bad we ordered the radish salad. My husband ordered his pasta with optional sausage and truffle. While there was sausage in the dish, there was not even a hint of truffle. And so it goes! Finish up with an overly rich tiramisu and an exorbitant bill, and my final recommendation is - stick with drinks and snacks! read more

Sulla Luna is one of those rare NYC spots that feels like you have stumbled into a little slice of Italy. It is an independent bookshop and Italian restaurant with roots in Venice, and the concept alone is charming but the execution is even better. The space has such a warm and inviting vibe, surrounded by shelves of books that make you want to linger for hours. We ordered the Tonnarello al Limone, and it was excellent. Simple, bright, and full of flavor, it completely hit the spot. Every drink we tried was also fantastic, thoughtfully crafted and balanced. The staff was friendly, engaging, and clearly cared about creating a welcoming experience. What stood out most was how relaxed everything felt. We were never rushed to order or pushed to clear the check, which has sadly become rare in NYC. Instead, we got to enjoy the meal at our own pace, and that made the experience really special. Absolutely ADORE this new cafe!! So cute and cozy - this is the perfect spot to read a book or get work done with some coffee/tea and light bites on the side. The cafe doubles as a bookstore with children's and illustrated books beautifully displayed on shelves and tables throughout the space. The service was great, and the staff was very attentive and kind. I ordered a matcha latte, an espresso, and a cornetto. The matcha latte was pretty standard and not as rich/flavorful as I would've liked, but this is likely not the type of place to go to for a matcha latte anyways. I did enjoy the espresso and the cornetto, which was delightfully crispy and flaky on the outside and soft on the inside with pistachio filling. The powdered sugar was a nice touch as well. This was an Instagram spot that my friend I was eyeing and we snagged a reservation this past weekend for a lovely brunch! The matcha lattes DO NOT come sweetened, but they give/have sweeteners for you to adjust the flavor. I am a bit of a matcha snob -- and I thought their matcha lacked flavor. For food, we ordered pesto pasta and bruschetta. I LOVED the Bruschetta. The lemon zest on top was a nice touch. For the pesto, it is very true to its flavor, but it wasn't mind-blowing or anything. Overall, I felt the food was okay, but the excellent service and the amazing staff make up for it all (hence the 5 star)!!! The staff was very accommodating and extremely sweet. PLUS, they have the cutest plates/cutlery and the whole place is beautifully decorated through and through.
