Did the Sultan Bakery change owners? This was my 5th visit and the first two (1.5 years ago) times were great but the last 3 have been below average. I will just review my last visit March 21 2010 here, I ordered a Philly steak sandwich with mash potatoes + a bowl of Clam Chowder and 1 Pop. The girl took my order and said help yourself to the cooler for the pop (no glass just drink out of the can). They brought all the food at once about 25 minutes later. The sandwich was average but the mash potatoes and gravy were off (I think it was packaged gravy mix) and the Clam Chowder was warm but not hot. On a 1-10 scale I would give it a 3 out of 10. Plus topping off my experience I have had a upset stomach plus a couple of bathroom visits for the last 24 hours. I will not be back... read more

Love the food here. I've never had anything but the sandwiches on their fresh baked bread and I love it. Whenever I visit my family, I eat here at least once or twice. Their staff could be a little more courteous, but it's a bakery type place and they are always super busy so I'll give them a break on that. Their food is totally worth it. read more

I would recommend this place. I really enjoy the size of the breakfast sandwich. It is not all greasy like other places and it will definitely fill you up. However be prepared to wait, in my opinion it is worth the wait. Maybe it is the time frame I pick to visit there but the line can be long. Not a good experience for us. We walked in excited for a small town, bakery sandwich and received something far less. From the start the girl at the counter was rude and unpleasant. Not a deal breaker but not a good first impression. We ordered a chicken club sandwich for ourselves and a grilled cheese for our daughter. When the food came the chicken club sandwich was a burger on a store bought bun and the grilled cheese was made with 2 slices of American cheese. Neither of these were in the description on the menus boards. When we asked if we could have the chicken club on bakery bread our friend at the front counter didn't even respond, just gave us a sort of sneer and walked away. They did bring the sandwich back on bakery bread though it was still a chicken burger but on bakery bread. Our 2 year old daughter would not eat the grilled cheese. We have stopped by the Sultan Bakery for several years now and it appears the tides have changed. It used to be the place to stop in for a great sandwich or a pastry. But the family and I just stopped in there the other day, it wasn't busy, maybe two tables had people sitting down and then us at the counter. The waitress sat in the corner, ignored us, then walked by us three times without saying a word or any type of eye contact. After the fourth pass she stood at the cash register and looked at us. So, I started the conversation by asking if the two trays of small powdered doughnuts and small sprinkled doughnuts was it for the day for pastries. The waitress rudely advised that for that time of the day, 2:30 pm, I shouldn't expect anything else to be there. The wife and I looked at each other and my kids had a confused look on their faces. We stood there for a moment and my wife said she didn't want to be there, so we left. I understand we all have bad days, but that particular situation was uncalled for. So, Sultan Bakery the family and I will no longer stop in on the way to a camping trip, vacation on the other side of the mountains or during our weekly ski trips during the winter. read more

I ordered the hot roasted turkey dinner. I have had better and worse (not too many though). The gravy had way too much pepper and the spices on the vegetables were horrible (I think they were trying to make old vegetables taste better). I also ordered a large chocolate cup cake and not sure exactly when it was baked as it was very stale on the top. Service was terrible I was never once asked how my meal tasted. The only comment that was given was directed to my daughter about not eating her chicken strip so she can eat the cupcake (not sure what business it was of her to see my daughter ate her chicken strip). A gem. Absolutely. The perfect trifecta of generous portions, great taste, and reasonable prices. Last time there I had the sausage breakfast sandwich on their own white bread. It was A+++! My son had steak and eggs with the same bread toasted. He loved it. Both of us had cookies to go and they were really, really good. You will stand in line, and the lady behind the counter is busy, but once you order the food comes out pretty quick. They could speed things up a bit by having two lines - one line for the food orders and one line for the donuts & such. A perfect stop on the way up to (or back from) the pass area. The kids had German chocolate cake. I had the fish n' chips. My fiance' had the BLT. We ordered a soda to share and the kids asked for water. After sitting a while my fiance' went up to ask for waters when they never came. The lady acted rude and stated that her shift hadn't started yet but did rudely get the water. I later asked for mustard and was told it is in the back and that she would get it and she acted like I was putting her out. It never came. There definately wasn't a warm inviting feeling going on this day. Now to the grub. The fries were decent and cooked correctly. The fish was from frozen which isn't always bad of course, but this fish was not too good. The BLT was really very very good. Without the delicious BLT this would be a 2. Without the rude service it may have eeked its way to a 4; but probably not given the grease sogged fish. This is either the first or a rare time I'm giving a 3 to a place that I will never go back to. Being treated with that level of rudeness left a bad taste in my mouth. It's too bad because the BLT is right up there in the tops of BLTs I've eaten before. read more

The meat seemed old and tasteless, slapped on a bun with BQQ sauce squirted on top, well not really BBQ, I guess they ran out that so they mixed BBQ with Ketchup thinking we can't tell, but we could, the bun was obviously a microwaved rubber thing. I've been coming here since I was 8 years old - so for 25 years. The food is all American classic diner style food. Massive portions, comforting and locally run. I've always been a fan for nostalgic reasons and obviously just the good ol fashioned food. However, the service here has really plummeted in recent years. The food looks awesome but we tried their baked goods. Delicious and well done. The danish with the creamed cheese was delicious and fresh. I can see why there are lines. There is plenty of staff for cleaning tables and preparing food but the poor girl at the counter had to collect money, get the baked goods and other things. She really needed help. If the bakery fixed their service it would be 5 stars. It's a popular place for hikers and skiers but service really sucks. Loved this place after a long hike. Got the pork chop lunch and the portions were huge and hearty. Solid pan fried chops with mashed potatoes and stuffing. People rate this place like its a fine dining establishment. They want filet mignon for 10 bucks... For the price they put so much thought and effort into their food.
