Summary : Good work, expensive, slow. Details: just had arms on a suit coat shortened. $82 bucks just for that! Plus 4% if you use credit card. Had to make appointment to see her, then it took 2 weeks to get the suit coat back. I just picked it up so not sure about quality of alteration yet , but wife and others have liked her work in the past and hence recommended her. In my brief search for a tailor in LG area and beyond, it seems like there aren't a lot of choices. So perhaps the business and high price is supply/demand reality. I don't mind the appointment way of operating, but wish she had a website and other ways to communicate this and sign up. read more

Holy smokes. I was shocked at how much I was charged for four minor alterations (shorten the hems of three tees and the straps of one dress). $130!! Over $30 each for simple alterations. I've had alterations done at other places in south San Jose and Sunnyvale, and have paid a much more reasonable $12 to $20 for similar or even more complicated work. I guess I learned valuable lessons: Always ask the price first (I would've, but she was busy with a customer when I dropped my items off) and be wary when shopping in downtown Los Gatos! read more

I drove from Santa Cruz to Los Gatos to use Sumi's service--and it was well worth it. I called her for a price estimate on repairing a hole along the bottom seam of a sweater. She said it would probably be $10 to $12. When I got there, she confirmed the price as $10 to $12. She said that the job would not be perfect but that the repair would be good, hardly noticeable. I explained that I'd come from Santa Cruz and that if she could do it while I waited, it was worth extra to me. I meant that I'd be willing to pay upwards of $25. She said she would have it done in 20 minutes. She did, it was as she described (not perfect but perfectly fine), and she charged $12. Now, if only she'd move to Santa Cruz! read more

Who needs to go on a diet when you can have a brilliant tailor like Linh Mai, owner of Sumi's Tailoring! I have brought so many things to Linh over the years. Here is a short list: * Many pairs of pants and jeans to be taken in at the waist. She does not show darts in the waistband (as they do at Nordstrom). She takes off the top band, takes in several inches for me, and replaces the band. I am constantly looking at the pants, trying to figure out how she does this. But I am always left confused, but thrilled that I can actually have jeans that fit my small waist and curvy hips and thighs. * Linh took up my very beaded wedding dress, and charged me half the price I was quoted by a tailor down the street. * I have dress shirts and sweaters taken in at the waist, for a nice and flattering fit. * I once had a long dress shortened and reshaped into a knee-length dress. * Jeans shortened to bermuda shorts. * 3/4 length sleeves taken up to cap sleeves. * Trench coat taken in for a better fit. * Beautiful silk drapes made!! They are gorgeous! Linh is a gem in Los Gatos. I have been able to build a beautiful wardrobe with her. In fact, I would estimate that she has worked on over 50% of my clothes. From the first fitting, she was super detailed and caught every little thing (I'm picky and have high expectations for my wedding dress). Not only was the dress done right, but was done a little earlier than expected despite it being the prime wedding month of July. The price was reasonable for a high quality Los Gatos place. Pros: Two button up shirts nicely tailored with a super fast two day turn around. Linh is extremely friendly; you'll leave with a smile. But be sure to be very explicit to exactly what you want done. Linh is incredible and awesome with lace... my wedding dress came in 2.5 sizes too big for me and while my first fitting was super dramatic because I hated what I saw in the mirror, I had complete faith in her and all her pinning (and knowledge!) and by the end of the experience I had everything I imagined the dress would be... She is so cute and works so hard... would 100% recommend for lace wedding gowns (which are difficult to alter!). Note: it was expensive in total ($450 I believe), but my dress required a TON of altering and it was worth every penny. She also made a new silk belt for me because the ribbon on the one I ordered was too short (removed the appliqué and applied to a new ribbon). read more

This woman has her sh*t together! She got right back to me, gave me her cell phone number in case I needed to reach her when she was not at the shop, and turned my dress alteration around in less than 24 hours. Holy cow! In addition to being available and working to meet my insane deadline, Linh did a beautiful job on the hem, and everything worked out perfectly. Highly recommend! read more

I have used her for years and always been happy with her work. Recently dropped off 4 dresses and prepaid before I left. My assistant picked up the order for me and I didn't look at it right away. It's been three weeks, which I understand makes things harder, but when I went back to find the missing item she found the dress but couldn't find the paid receipt (because it was already picked up with the original order) and can't prove that I paid for it. So my dress has been held hostage. Because she is unorganized. I will be encouraging my friends who use her to look elsewhere. read more

Finally! A great alterations place!! I brought 3 pairs of shorts to be taken in 1/2 inch or so on each side in the thigh area only (not waist) and she did GREAT. You can't tell at all, the seams look great and they now fit perfectly-- going to take everything here! read more

Overpriced and unreliable. I am writing this review in a desperate attempt that the owner, Linh, will see it and actually respond. I dropped two dresses off last Saturday and she told me they would be available for pick up on Friday, May 27. I arrive today to find a note on the window that they are closed until Tuesday, May 31!!! These dresses are for the holiday weekend and a trip to Hawaii I am taking next week!! Now, I have no dresses for my vacation and no way to contact Linh who is holding them hostage. Terrible reliability for the price. Believe me, she charges a TON too. If you don't mind when you get your stuff and money is no option, this is the place for you. If you actually want what you pay for and want your clothes in time, go somewhere else. From the looks of the other excellent reviews, I hope this is just a huge mistake and I will be happy to revise my review if things can be set right but for now I am devastated that the dresses I intended to wear on vacation and at an event are no longer available. read more

Sumi alterations used to be down-to-earth - Charging fair prices for good work and getting the alterations done in about a week. I have been there the last few times where her prices have not only gone up, but she doesn't get the work done when she promises them. Depending on the day she will raise prices on you. If you know of a better alterations shop in Los Gatos please post so we can go to a place where they do quality work, charge a fair price and perform the work on time. read more

SUMI SAVED THE DAY! My sister recently got married and the week before the wedding we were having a dress nightmare! The store she bought the dress from assured her she could have it altered just the way she wanted it, so to order a size that was about four sizes too big. Anyway, we got the dress, the store's tailor had the dress for a month to make the adjustments. When she tried the dress on, it was still way too big and the seamstress didn't make any of the changes on the dress that my sister originally asked for. Amidst tears and panic, my sister decided to take the dress to Sumi, with the hope that maybe she could work her magic. Sumi didn't flinch. She started pinning my sister up in all the right places and told us to come back in a week (two days before the wedding!) Needless to say, the dress was PERFECT and just what my sister had in mind when she originally purchased the dress. Sumi also took a dress that I got off the rack at Macy's and turned it from and Okay garment into a one-of-a-kind dress that I was complimented on numerous times during my sister's wedding. Linh is great and this is the only place I take my clothes for alterations. I am barely 5 feet so almost all my jeans have to be hemmed. A lot of dresses I get have too deep a v opening. Sometimes I have to have her alter my tank tops too since they are too loose around the chest. These are subtle changes that need to be made and done right. I even had fix a little thread that was sticking out from a sweater that could have been a big problem if it were left as is. I think she is fairly priced for being in Los Gatos and her workmanship. read more

Sumi's is the only tailor I will go to. Linh just knows what she's doing and her turn-around time is fast. I've had many minor alterations done by her. She understands the annoying female sizing standards and gives every dress, romper, and skirt the unique touches I need for it to fit my body. It's best to give her ample time to alter something for you, though. But I'm sure she will surprise you. read more

I just wanted sheer sleeves added to a dress and a strip of trim (I would provide) at the end of these sleeves to be added to the bottom of sleeves. First she told me she would charge between $125-$140, then she said at least $180 of course after a long lecture why its going to cost so much. Then I asked her how much then would she charge to make a new dress if I provided her the fabric and she said it would be at least $80/hour which is quite shocking. In any case, I took my trim and dress and left and found 2 other places, one would charge $35 and the other $40. I ended up going to the one that was closer to my house which was $40. I'm not sure if Sumi's just doesn't have the bandwidth or they are just incapable and uncomfortable doing this type of work, but I know they are over-charging for sure. I feel bad for people in Los Gatos who go to this place perhaps not knowing they are being over charged. read more
