It's not the quietest of locations, and dog owners stay away (no pups, strictly enforced), but for the baller, shot caller or 40 inch toddler - this playplace is A-OK!

With "freedom" for the kids... that means they really just choose whatever they want. Perhaps I ought to have understood more clearly that Mario Kart and iPad games were going to be options. And taken that into consideration with my child's proclivities. He also had a hard time meeting other kids and making friends. Not usually difficult for him, but he said kids already had cliques and the older/bigger kids were condescending and mean. Oh well. So be careful if signing up your child for language they are not familiar as my experience has been that they won't enjoy it.

Yes, Morse-Kelley, yes…read more Full court (albeit unmarked) hoops/skate park hybrid with still a second (third?) half (triad?) dedicated to the kids and eaters. Benches, both covered and un, stay fenced out from where the action takes place, and this setup attracts a wide variety of park-goers: skaters, squirts (the full playground is wee but brand new and totally rad), Sixers and sunning snackers savoring salami sandwiches. Eat the alliteration with a spoon, y'all. I do hope the abundant surrounding residential spaces will keep a close watch on the grounds, as Spring Hill deserves a public space like this and has the community to make sure it stays in great shape.

The renovations gave us a beautiful pavilion and well kept much needed bathrooms. 4th of July celebrations occur on the Thursday before the 4th. The police shut down that section of Broadway to all cars and the area gets packed with people. They have street vendors selling balloons and glow sticks, fried dough, pizza and other normal fair food. All leading up to what I believe is a great fireworks show in the Ville. Added bonus- it's like a mini reunion seeing so many people that I grew up with...

Capt. K and I visited the Trum Field Playground after hearing they had water sprinkler that had…read morebeen turned on during Memorial Day weekend. The playground is small. A single climbing structure sitting on a woodchip area. It's in good condition and seems to have been built/installed very recently. There are 2 toddler swings, 2 big kid swings. The highlight was definitely the sprinkler. It basically involves a push button that activates a sprinkler set in the ground that shoots straight up. The sprinkler consists of 5 mini-steams, so its good if your kid wants to put his/her hand in it. The other nice thing is that the sprinkler area is fairly well shaded, so I could see it being good for really hot days. My biggest complaint of the park is the surrounding area. It feels like an industrial area with the Somerville City Offices right next to it. There's a busy street next to the park that is trafficked by many large trucks. Also the train tracks are right next to the sprinkler area, which can be awesome if your kid is into trains (which thankfully Capt. K is) or kind of scary if they're not into loud noises. So to summarize, it's a serviceable park with a sprinkler located in an area that isn't aesthetically pleasing. As parks with sprinklers become a necessity in the hot days of summer, I'll be adding Trum Playground to the rotation for the sake of variety. But it's not really a "destination" playground.

Clarendon Avenue Park is our second favorite park for our 1.25yr old. There's a massive climbing…read morestructure with parts good for toddlers and parts better for older kids. It sits in a giant sand area with a ton of toys that live in the park (including some excellent truck/car toys). The sand is in pretty good shape.... not too gross, but not the cleanest either. There's also a large circular pavement area with a good number of tricycles, push-cars, scooters, and other assorted vehicles for your kid(s) to push around. This area gets some good shade in the late afternoon, so it provides some nice respite on hot days. My biggest complaint of the park is that not enough people use it. Capt. K (my son) and I are often the only ones there. I don't know if this is due to the park abutting Mass Ave (so there is a lot of traffic going by) or if there just aren't many families that live in the area. However, if you go on a weekday from 11am-12pm, there are usually 3-4 daycares that converge on the park. But it can get a little too insane for Capt. K's taste. In short, if you can walk to this park, I would definitely add it to your playground repertoire, particularly as an afternoon spot. There are so many toys to play with, it's easy to kill and hour or two there.
