If you think you know hot dogs, you need to try this before you really know hot dogs. Our group tried three different versions and they were all fantastic. I highly recommend the Katsu sumo dog, over the top in a very good way. The atmosphere is a lunch counter with open seating and floor seating nearby. First come, first serve, but we had no problem finding space. Service was great, and the staff were friendly and pleasant. I didn't get that good smokiness or smoothness from what I remember of my last meat hot dog over two decades ago. I ordered it with chopped onions (thought it could've used more) & squirted on mustard & ketchup. $8.50 + $1 upcharge for the vegan dog. I liked the unique menu of hot dogs available. I ordered the California Dog which included Guacamole, pico de gallo, mayo, furikake, tempura crunchies, cilantro. It tasted fresh and it added veggies to something that doesn't usually have veggies on it so you can say you ate some fiber. I was in the food market super hungry and decided to give Sumo Dog a try. They serve hot dogs a million ways. I went with the Bacon Banh Mi hot dog. It's a beef hot dog that comes bacon wrapped and topped with pickled daikon & carrot slaw, cucumber, lime, jalapeño, spicy mayo, furikake, cilantro. I'm definitely a person that likes to modify cause as much as I like to eat there is a long list of things I don't eat. I didn't get the jalapeños , cilantro or spicy mayo on mine because I don't like any of those ingredients. I also tried the sparkling yuzu white peach. It's like flavored sparkling water. Everything was fresh and tasty. I usually keep it basic and only add ketchup to my hot dog so eating it with toppings was different for me and I really enjoyed it. The employee helping us was Alison. Shout out to her. She was really nice, answered all the questions and even offered to put the spicy mayo on the side just in case I wanted to try it. It was as spicy as I thought it would be so I didn't add it to my hot dog but I appreciated her hospitality. There is a counter with a few stools for Sumo customers only and I decided to stay and enjoy my meal while there. This is a food vendor at the public market Oxbow in downtown Napa. Where all they sell is different flavors of hotdog. They have a Vietnamese banh mi dog with the pickled veggies, a few different other Asian flavors with wasabi, and one with scallions, and a California dog that is basically like a Mexican hot dog. We tried the Muso katsu; which is miso flavored batter deep fried hotdog like tonkatsu woth a bed of Japanese mayonnaise teriyaki sauce, cabbage sauce on top. It tasted nice and crunchy lotta different texture with the country cabbage on top however $12 for a hotdog is a bit pricey. Even a Korean fried dog is half that price. They were not that busy. But took your order quickly. My dog had to be deep-fried so it took a little longer. Which I didn't mind because it was located in the market with a bunch of other stalls so I just went shopping around while waiting. It was clean and for the type of space the design was fitting. We went to eat at a nearby restaurant but the Mrs wanted to bring me here since I have never been before. Let's start off by saying this whole entire area The Oxbow Market looks like a hipsters wet dream. Personally wouldn't come here again as everything here is over priced. I saw Sumo Dog and wanted some snack as I was still hungry. I tried their godzilla dog which was awful. The bun itself tasted old,hard, and cold. There's a sign that says "Happiness is a warm bun" but I think they forgot to actually warm the bun for me because it was hard and cold. Don't get me wrong I know it's just a hotdog and I wasn't expecting some gourmet handmade hotdog but this hotdog had the look of a pretty decent hotdog (maybe looks like a Nathan's hotdog) but tasted like a low grade Bar S hotdog. The rest of the toppings on by hotdog were just as bad, the chili tasted like canned chili but if they took all the flavor out of it. I've had better chili from a fast food drive thru. We tried the sushi tater tots and they were sadly also disgusting. Its not the fact that it was rice that was offputting but it tasted like they used microwaved rice to make the tots. Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. The service is fine. Nothing extraordinary but not bad just really there to take your order and hand you the food. My fiancé and I were looking for something to eat around the Oxbow area and came across sumo dog. Sumo Dog is new restaurant that recently just opened in the last month. This is my first time hearing about Sumo Dog, and they are known for their Japanese inspired hot dogs which immediately caught my attention. Who can go wrong with anything Japanese ingredients with a hot dog combination?! I ordered the sumo dog, which is a hotdog dog with wasabi relish, pickled peppers, spicy mayo, teriyaki sauce, furikake, minced onion, and nori. I also ordered the bacon banh mi, which is your standard banh mi ingredients along with a bacon wrapped hotdog. The bun from touch alone was super soft and buttery. The banh mi hot dog tasted amazing and this was my first time trying a hotdog with banh mi inspired ingredients. It was refreshing and savory. The sumo dog also tasted amazing with the most perfect texture with a juicy tender hotdog and a extremely soft bun. All of the ingredients meshed so well together, and none of the ingredients felt like it was out of place. Parking isn't an issue as there is a huge parking lot behind the market. The service was quick, and the lady at the register was very kind and knowledgeable of their menu. They do have some individual seating options located right in the front of the restaurant, but there are also tables in the middle for larger parties. Sumo Dog in the Napa Oxbow Public Market is the latest location for this small, Indio-based, national chain. They've gotten a lot of attention lately because of their rapid expansion into high profile sports arena locations (like Yankee Stadium, Golden 1, AT&T, etc.), so I wanted to check them out. They just opened on Saturday (Feb 1), so this Is their first week of operation in Napa. The menu is basically divided into three sections. The first section is made up of traditional American hot dogs like a Chicago dog, chili dog, and New York dog. The second section is made up of Signature Style Hot Dogs. As you can guess from the name (ie "Sumo"), this is where they fuse Japanese ingredients with American hot dogs. The third section is a handful of sandwiches and burritos. (Chicken Katsu, Sumo Chopped Cheese, Breakfast Burrito, etc). Long story short, I thought the three things I ordered were visually attractive, but ultimately had so many different toppings added together that the flavors and textures all muddled together into one big mess. I ordered: - Godzilla Dog (footlong all beef hot dog, beef chili, togarashi cheese sauce, wasabi relish, pickled peppers, spicy mayo, teriyaki sauce, furikake, onion, jalapeño, and nori) - Miso Katsu Dog (butterflied, breaded, and fried hot dog, miso mustard, coleslaw, tonkatsu sauce, mayo, furikake, scallions) - Tater Tots, "Sumo Style" (beef chili, togarashi cheese sauce, spicy mayo, teriyaki sauce, pickled peppers, jalapeno peppers, furikake, and nori) Just looking at the list of ingredients I wrote above, you can probably see what I mean. There's way too much stuff on each item, and you can't taste anything distinctly. I really do like the idea of fusing Japanese ingredients into American hot dogs. But I think that they would be much better served by picking one or two (three, tops) ingredients that complement and make sense together. As an example... I love that they took a hot dog and prepared it katsu style (breaded in panko and then fried). But I would choose to just top it with a little slaw (dressed with a sesame dressing) and tonkatsu sauce. Personally, I think those three things would compliment and harmonize with each other, and would be much more impactful from a flavor standpoint. It was an interesting and novel experience, but I don't see myself craving anything I ordered enough to reorder. I'll probably go back and try some of the other things like the Chicken Katsu Sandwich or the Chicago Dog (I love a good Chicago-style hotdog). Jeffery Lunak, the chef/owner of the concept, was there and I got a chance to chat with him a little. He's the former corporate chef for all the Morimoto restaurants, and a really nice guy. And I think that it's incredible that he was able to turn his pop-up concept (Sumo Dog started as one of the food stalls at Coachella) into the successful national chain it is now. The Miso Katsu was prepared like a Katsu and served sliced in half with cole slaw, tonkatsu, spicy mayo and furikake. Didn't really care the sushi rice tots.
