This is the only sushi place I've been to in Rapid City so I can't compare it to other nearby places but I really liked it! I'm pregnant so I can't have the raw fish sushi. I was sad because I love sushi and I thought I was going to have to get a rice bowl instead, but then saw that they had fully cooked options! I ended up getting the Matsuri roll which is cooked and was great! The service was great - it probably took them 15 minutes to make our food and the vibe of the place was great. The shumai were okay. I thought they were small. The poke bowl was fine. All ingredients were fresh. Service was slow considering that it was not busy since it was past lunch time. Though our server seemed to be new or in-training, she was pleasant and tried to do the best she could. When asked for the menu again, it took at least 10 minutes to get back to us. Meanwhile, I already asked the more senior waitstaff for the menu which she handed to us immediately. Dessert choices were limited to mochi, mochi ice cream, and sesame balls. Overall, would give a 3/5 rating: the food was not bad, the interior was cute with Godzilla posters from different years all over, but the service was a little slow allowing for the training/new status of our server. read more

Was in the area and had heard great things about Sumo, so I decided to stop in. I was not disappointed! Cozy restaurant with amazing food. I got the Crab Rangoons (so delicious I didn't even get a picture, I ate them so quickly. Crispy, light and well balanced), a spider roll (substantial and the sushi rice was some of the best I've ever had) and the Pork Bulgogi bowl. They aren't lying when they say it's spicy, but the heat was nicely offset with a generous helping of fresh veggies! Will definitely make sure to stop again when I'm in the area! read more

Almost missed this gem! I'm so glad we didn't. We had a wonderful dinner here with our little family. My husband and I are pretty close to sushi snobs and our bar is set pretty high but this place definitely satisfied our bellies! We started with seaweed salad, miso soup, and sashimi sampler. We loved how the seaweed salad came atop of pickled daikon. It added well to the combination of flavors. The sashimi had great texture and tasted so fresh. Then, our two boys received their kids sushi meal that came out in these adorable boats with festive umbrellas in their oranges! They devoured everything! It had all their favorites which we would normally order for them: California rolls, edamame, and sliced oranges. For ourselves and oldest daughter, we ordered (2) sushi combo 1, Tako octopus, and a Rainbow roll. We also had hot sake because any time we eat raw fish we drink sake! You should too! To finish off, we ordered all 3 flavors of mochi ice cream: strawberry, mango, and green tea. We all agreed on strawberry being the best and among our more matured taste, we preferred green tea. We also ordered Daifuku Red Bean Mochi. This was a unique dessert that we don't often see on the menu so we had to try it too! Had the Bulgogi Steak bowl and wife had the Teriyaki Chicken bowl. The space is small but quaint. Clean and none of that greasy or stale smell you find in alot of small dining room restaurants. Friendly staff. Good menu options. Bulgogi was very tasty and had good sauce. Much better than the Teriyaki chicken. We found the chicken bland, seem like the sauce was over the rice and not on the actual chicken. Still a good bowl. Also had the shrimp spring rolls. Fresh and tasty. Good peanut sauce. I would suggest using different shrimp or style (cut or mix)of shrimp. Just seemed too exact with each roll having 2 small shrimp in each. Either way, we enjoyed the place and the meal. read more

Meanwhile - Rapid City isn't exactly a foodie's promised land...and sushi, well...its Rapid City...you see any oceans? So, they are going to struggle on the larger sushi scene from a global perspective. So I tried to not be too harsh on the sushi in and of itself. I had a cold, tall, Kirin Ichi Ban! It was good and flooded my brain with memories of my days in Japan. The restaurant was clean, but in an old building. Don't let that distract you from the treats inside. I'm a gyoza snob...so I immediately ordered a plate of fried pork gyoza. Their gyoza was definitely sub-par. I.e. like grocery store level gyoza....good in a pinch, but I won't order it again. I ordered a sushi combo #1...the presentation was clean and excellent. A little soy sauce on the table and I was a pretty happy camper. The sushi was pretty standard and nothing to write home about. Even so, the place was packed at 1230 on Tuesday and we thought the service was good and we were served promptly. Spring roll was good and the peanut sauce was really good. Crab Rangoon was good. Oh Sumo... It saddens me that I have to drop the "ol rating" to this but I have to be honest with the people. This would be a 3.5 if Yelp was able to rate in such ways. The honeymoon period is over and I suppose I was able to take it all in and see clearly for the first time. It's still a great experience, but a few of the things I loved in the beginning just aren't there any longer. The warm super sticky sushi rice goodness has since become the same old rice that I've found at other restaurants. It made me weep a little if I'm honest. The cuts of seafood are still good. The customer service is still superb, and makes up for the wait time when the Itamae is preparing your meal. Sumo is still quality, and is still a solid and proper establishment for where we are in the world. I will visit a few more times and see what may come in the hopes of rating Sumo again. This hasn't deterred me from eating at Sumo, and it shouldn't deter you. It's still quality. It's just not what I remember from my initial visits. read more

I got carry out from Sumo during the pandemic and they were amazing and easy to get carry out from. My Mt. Fuji roll was AMAZING and the place is so cute inside. I can't wait to eat in here someday. It just had the coolest little vibe. There was a group of friends discussing the Toy Story franchise over their lunch and the decor just makes you want to sip miso and read a book while snacking on sushi rolls for the whole afternoon.
