Ordered the Derry roll...got something else. Wasn't the Derry roll. I will admit the sushi is really good here but Jesus they customer service is horrible. Ivy needs to work on her interpersonal skills because everytime I go in there I deal with her and there's literally no hello, no thank you for spending $55 on dinner takeout, literally all she does is ask your name, swipe your card and hand it back to you. Amazing sushi and service!! If you're considering... do try! Came here on a Tuesday night a little before 6 pm. We were the only ones in there at first, but then the place started picking up. Our server was prompt in her greeting and she was VERY friendly and helpful with the menu. The menu is huge. You can tell the main focus is the sushi, but they also do teriyaki dinners, hibachi dinners (they just don't have the hibachi tables), tempura, dessert, etc. We started with the sweet potato tempura and age tofu. Both appetizers were delicious. Tofu was cooked to perfection and the sauce was not overbearing. For our entrées my Mom had the 13 piece sashimi dinner (which came with a house salad) and I had the Derry roll and Spicy Tuna roll. Derry roll consists of shrimp tempura topped with spicy crab meat. The sushi was delicious. Fish was of such a great quality and the presentation on each dish was BEAUTIFUL, especially the sashimi dish. There was even a light up glowing ball under the ice in my Mom's dish which was a unique touch. They really take the time to present their skills to each guest. For dessert my Mom had the tempura banana with ice cream. HUGE dessert. There were about 6 pieces of fried bananas delicately arranged around a scoop of ice cream in the middle with chocolate drizzle. She loved it. I had the tempura ice cream with caramel sauce and it was good as well. The tempura ice cream was similar to other places so if you're looking for something different definitely try the banana tempura or the tempura cheesecake. Prices are really reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. For hot tea, two appetizers, a hibachi takeout meal, an order of sushi, an order of special roll sushi, a sashimi meal and two desserts we only paid $87. While there is great sushi outside of the Boston area, I would say Sumo takes the cake for being #1 for sushi AND presentation. We will definitely be back! read more

First time customer! I was craving some sushi and decided to try this place. As I walked in with my kids, two ladies were so friendly. I ordered takeout so it was quick and easy. Don't order take out over the phone - they will mess it up. We ordered an L02 and D03. We were charged $39. The entire order was wrong. There were no Shumai or California Rolls which were supposed to come with the L02. There was shrimp which we didn't order. I tried to use the online ordering but it doesn't seem to be working. My husband brought the food back and they said that they don't have the lunch menu on Sunday's which is what We ordered from. There isn't anything that I saw on the website that indicated they didn't serve from the lunch menu. It would have been nice if they would have told me that when I called. They weren't able to put the money back on our credit card so they gave him a gift card. I think that's a load of crap. This is the first time that we ordered from Sumo Sushi and this isn't a great first impression.maybe I'll give the gift card to my son. I don't plan on going there again. Let us be honest, Derry is not the epicenter of the culinary universe. If this place was located in Boston or NYC it would get 2 maybe 3 stars. The Sushi is decent. I had a couple pieces of toro. They were just okay. It didn't taste that fresh. I'm not expecting it to be like the Tsukiji Market, but it shouldn't taste like it's been sitting out for 2 days at room temperature. I had 2 different rolls they offered. One was the Derry and the other was the Lobster Feast. The Lobster Feast was the winner. The crab is definitely out of a can and not fresh at all. Also if you are a Japanese restaurant why are you serving Chinese dishes also? All that being said, the service was fantastic and the food came out quickly. I went for the first time and had their "Ultimate Vegetable Roll" and the "Avocado Cucumber" roll. Not only were they incredibly good, but the presentation was unexpected with a flower on the plate and everything. Same waitress we had the first time, who did not know the difference between cellophane noodles and udon noodles. This time my wife ordered tonkatsu, or port katsu, and the waitress corrected her by saying it was pork cashew. This place is almost a hidden gem tucked away in a far corner of the Big Lots/Shaws plaza. The ambiance is hip and modern (slightly reminiscent of a nightclub) with colorful lighting. It's definitely a great spot for date night. The sushi is yummy and the portions are bigger than expected. At other sushi restaurants, my husband and I usually order 3-4 different rolls to split but here, we couldn't finish the 3 we ordered! Oh did we try, though! My only complaint about the sushi was some of the sauces were a tad on the salty side. The prices were reasonable and the service was fast. We were surprised how quick our sushi came out. This place has been totally renovated since it was Kang's. It has an authentic Japanese menu, minus all the other stuff of the hybrid Asian restaurants that have an identity problem. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre and the prices astronomical, which I guess goes hand in hand with being in the massive former retail space that it inhabits. A solid option for sushi or American Chinese cuisine. I sat down ordered crab Rangoon's, the fantasy roll, and a Mai tai. The Mai tai was good, I would say it's one of the better ones I've had. The crab rangoons were phenomenal! They don't give you many but they are piping hot and all sorts of delicious. The fantasy roll is yellowtail/tuna/salmon/avacado with three very delicious sauces wrapped in soy paper. The presentation of their sushi is beautiful, however I believe they made a mistake by plating my brothers sweet potato roll on the same plate as my fantasy roll. I personally don't care that we used the same plate, we are brothers haha, but his had fried sweet potato tempura in the middle and it warmed the plate and by extension my sushi. The temperature of my roll made it very hard for me to enjoy as I'm used to cold raw fish. The wasabi mayo was a welcome surprise though, and def took the edge off the disappointing temperature. All told I feel like this was just a simple oversight and I plan to return and update my review. Stay tuned! read more

Thursday nights are our date nights. We just moved to Londonderry and was worrying that there would be no good sushi restaurant in the area. We used to rave about our favorite all time sushi place in concord nh. Wellll I have some good news for you! Happy hour Monday-Thursday 3-6, 5$ mai tais.. awsome drinks! This place is exceptional and made our first visit over exceeding our all time favorite place for sushi. The staff were so welcoming and wanting to make sure we were happy with everything. The Kani salad was like a crab salad on a bed of lettuce excellent proportion! We ordered the crazy maki, fantasy roll and White House. The fish was so fresh and huge! The amount of fish they put in there rolls was unbelievable. We sat at the sushi bar and watched them make everything. Such a talent. Decent Japanese restaurant that also has some pretty faithful Chinese dishes as well. Sushi quality and presentation are quite good along with noodle & tempura dishes. Interior is well though out and has a flow that makes sense. Haven't had a bad experience yet and it's one of the only Japanese restaurants in the area unless you go to Salem, NH or Manchester, NH. In a sea of hum-drum Americanized Chinese restaurants in Derry this one does stand out as a great alternative in the realm of Asian cuisine. Like a few said already finally a real Sushi place in Derry. They are open at 11:00 till 10:00 Mon - Thur, 11:00 till 11:00 Fri-Sat and Sunday noon - 9:30. They have Dine In or Take Out. Sushi was very fresh, well priced. We had the 3 maki roll lunch special for $11.95. You have 18 rolls to choose from along with Miso soup or salad. We had the Tuna roll, Spicy Salmon Roll and Shrimp with Cucumber Roll. All of these are quit a bid bigger than most restaurants, they had more fish and nice pieces of fish in them. Usually when you get a Tuna Roll it is about as big as a quarter, mostly rice. The Tuna roll was about the size of a 50 cent piece, mostly tuna and not too thick rice on the outside. The Tuna was very fresh and a nice cut. The Spicy Salmon was even bigger in diameter. Very fresh again with lots of salmon. The shrimp roll was good also, very well proportioned. The spicy was good not real hot like some places make. My wife said that the Miso was good. I had the hot tea and it was very tasty very nice flavor. We also had the Shumai which was as good as the rest of the food. We like lots of wasabi, the wasabi was fresh and had a good kick to it, hot but cooled down well. The wasabi did not have the after taste some places do, it had a very nice constancy. I also had some Ika sashimi (squid). The pieces were again a nice portion, rolled and place on top of fine shredded beet strings, very fresh and great flavor. I came back a few days later and ordered the Yaki Soba w/chicken for take out. The meal had fresh red and green bell peppers, carrots along with Bok Choy, noodles and a good amount of chicken. Working in Derry just got a lot better! The staff are always very friendly and quick. The atmosphere in the restaurant has a very nice modern feel. The sushi is presented very nicely and usually includes some art either a drizzle or a flower. During my lunch breaks I'm usually one of 2-3 customers in the building (hopefully this will increase). This place was amazing the first couple weeks it was open. Then it went down hill fast. The spicey "anything" is mostly bread crumbs. The sushi is mostly "just ok" and some is flat out bad, like the eel my friends and I had there the last time we went. Also, They gave me the wrong pick up order. When I went back and dropped it off there was a guy who'd probably been sitting there for an hr waiting for that order. He was there when I took picked the order up. They took the wrong order they had given me and gave me my order. I went out to my car and literally a minute later the guy came out with the wrong order they had given me. i ordered my go to drink - Kettle One and soda. They gave me the cheapest, dirtiest bottom-shelf vodka money can buy. It must have been Zhenka, Gordon's or some other grossness. I know what Kettle tastes like. I mentioned it right away and the waitress apologized. Still made me pay for the drink though even though I didn't drink any of it and left full on table when we left. They got my 8 bucks but wont be seeing me again. If they're willing to do that it concerns me that they may be cutting costs in other sketchy ways.
