This is my favorite sushi place in londonderry / derry area. I'd love to give this place five stars but I cant because the host and bartender, who are also the lunch waiters have zero personality and care for their customers. On my first visit, with my family for dinner, they gave us a hard time about where we sat because we had 12 and 11 year old boys. The waitress we had was fantastic and so was the food. On my second visit, today for lunch, I asked for seaweed salad instead of garden salad with my $16 sushi lunch special. The response was "no substitution", I explained I was willing to take an extra charge, the response "no substitution", nothing else. I hope this place succeeds as I love it but I also hope they read this and start using some discretion with, and care for their customers. read more

This place was amazing the first couple weeks it was open. Then it went down hill fast. The spicey "anything" is mostly bread crumbs. The sushi is mostly "just ok" and some is flat out bad, like the eel my friends and I had there the last time we went. Also, They gave me the wrong pick up order. When I went back and dropped it off there was a guy who'd probably been sitting there for an hr waiting for that order. He was there when I took picked the order up. They took the wrong order they had given me and gave me my order. I went out to my car and literally a minute later the guy came out with the wrong order they had given me. They had given me and I had opened and touched. They did not remake it they just gave it to him. Gross. Needless to say me and all my friends have stopped going there. read more

i ordered my go to drink - Kettle One and soda. They gave me the cheapest, dirtiest bottom-shelf vodka money can buy. It must have been Zhenka, Gordon's or some other grossness. I know what Kettle tastes like. I mentioned it right away and the waitress apologized. Still made me pay for the drink though even though I didn't drink any of it and left full on table when we left. They got my 8 bucks but wont be seeing me again. If they're willing to do that it concerns me that they may be cutting costs in other sketchy ways. It was alright, not super attentive and the place was empty but after we paid our bill the waiter looked at the check/tip he literally came back with the book open and asked if the service was ok. I went there for lunch with the hopes of finding a good Asian style restaurant. They offer Sushi, hibachi and teriyaki options. I opted for the hibachi. I also ordered some chicken wings. The wings were good. The hibachi on the other hand was so salty I couldn't even eat it. I also asked for my meat to be cooked medium rare. The meat was so over cooked it was like rubber. I explained this to my server in which she apologized, but offered nothing. After paying $54+ tip, I walked out very disappointed and upset. On the drive home I called and spoke to my server and told her that I was upset to pay over $50 for a meal I didn't eat. Her response was...we don't know how to void it. You will have to speak with the owner. She also noticed that my meat was over cooked, but served it to me anyway. She took my number and it is now two days later with no call back. I was really disappointed with the service I received from Sumo Sushi this past weekend. My boyfriend and I ordered take out and were told to come back in 15 minutes. I came back to pick up our order about 20 minutes later and it wasn't ready. No big deal, I waited a few minutes more and asked the girl how much longer until it was ready. She went back to check, came back after several minutes, and seemed to have forgotten to check on it for me. I asked her again and told her we were told to come back after 15 minutes; however, over 30 minutes had passed and it still wasn't ready. She went back again to check on it and a few minutes later my order came. No one apologized and I felt like I was a nuisance to them for even asking to check on my order. First time we went we had to walk out because we had been waiting for over 20 minutes and no one even asked us what beverage we wanted. We decided to give it a second chance and the food my boyfriend ordered ended up being soup based and it didn't say anything about that in the menu. He didn't like it. They spilled water on the floor and no one came to pick it up. It was there even when we left. When the woman gave me my brown rice, she mentioned that she just took it out of the microwave so the heat was very uneven. The ambiance was amazing, but everything else lacked. Came out to Sumu Sushi tonight and I have to say they did a great job with the place. It looks so good in here. My daughter used to work here when it was Derry Kangs Kitchen and I will tell you its an upgrade. I hope that this place is the place that finally makes it here. The food was amazing the people are very nice. Not a sushi eater but my boyfriend said that it was one if the better sushi places hes been. Better then Wasabi in Salem. The only good thing I can say about this place is the sushi was delicious and it was presented well. My husband and I will not be returning. We got no service. We were brought to our table in which we waited too long for someone to come over to see if we wanted drinks. Several minutes went by and another girl came over asking if we wanted drinks. We explained that someone already took our drink order. To be honest we don't know who was our server was. Our drinks were just placed on our table without a word. The same with our food. We were never asked if we needed anything or if everything was alright. The only reason why I gave this 3 stars is because of the food. This was by far the worst service I've ever experienced in my life. Our waitress disappeared mysteriously for about a half hour, while my brother and I watched our sushi sit on the bar, ready to be brought to us. By the time the waitress came back, she attended to her other four tables before finally bringing our sushi to us. It arrived lukewarm. When I told her that it was really unacceptable that we waited for 45 mins, she said 'what do you want me to do about it?' And when I asked for a manager she said 'what do you want to say to him? I'll talk to him for you.' After her talk with the manager, she came over and said that in compensation for our wait, she can give us a free dessert. However when my brother and I ordered the desserts, she said only one person could get it free. Needless to say I will never return. read more

I feel like this is a common sentiment for this place: FINALLY a good sushi place in Derry! Service was prompt I was seated with a glass of water within a minute of entering the door. I chose to sit in front of the sushi bar, because let's face it, it's more fun.The sushi chef was engaging and answered my questions honestly as to which fish were fresh--as in new, rather than not previously frozen--and which were not prime. "No bad fish here" is what he said when I asked which were older. I later discovered that he was right. I had both a salad and miso soup for appetizers (one came with my meal, the other was additional). The salad was crisp, well presented, but average. The orange dressing was the same standard dressing you will get at any Japanese restaurant. The miso was hot, had plenty of tofu, but again average. The same good quality soup you can find anywhere. The average appetizers do not bother me, however, they were exactly what I wanted, and expected. I ordered the Regular Sushi combo. I had missed the lunch specials by 30 minutes, though I was slightly peeved that they did not extend the special, as the chef recommended the plate I wanted, but I understand I was late and rules are rules for a reason. The sushi was presented beautifully. I had salmon, tuna, octopus, and suzuki (striped bass) as well as a California roll. The salmon, tuna and striped bass were wonderfully fresh. The octopus was unfortunately slightly chewy and rubbery, but arguably fresh for octopus in New England. As squids/octopi go in this area, it was some of the best I've had. The California roll was surprisingly good, and held up on it's own. I am sick and tired of Cali rolls as everyone has them as their standard go to maki. Each component was fresh and the whole roll well put together. Overall my experience was pleasant, surprisingly good (for Derry), but alas expensive for the quantity--but then again, the quality was spot on. I will say though, I'd rather pay more money for a good night out in Derry, than the same expenses after driving 30-50 minutes to Manchester or Boston. read more

The first time guest of Sumo Sushi will find the start to a positive experience when they first review the menu. Unlike countless other "asian" restaurants, the diner will find an exclusively Japanese themed menu. Reviewing the menu, there is a staple list of the expected roll sushi, though there is no underlying description of what goes into these items which might differentiate them from other restaurants. A common example of this is the Philadelphia roll, sometimes called the Bagel Roll. Some restaurants use uncured Salmon with Cream-cheese, where by the diner finds the later ingredient to dominate the Salmon. Others, used smoked Salmon, and achieve a delicious and enjoyable food-experience. On a second page, they list the more elaborate rolls. Upon examination, there are a few near-redundant items where what separates one roll from another is but one ingredient. The Sushi: For the first dining, I sampled the Spicy Tuna roll, and the Spicy California roll. These two items offer a general introductory standard. The first thing you will find is the presentation of the dish raises the general bar of dining establishments for Derry. Artfully presented and clean, Sumo Sushi definitely presents itself as being a serious place to dine. Sampling the "Spicy California Roll," this style opts for the toasted sesame seeds over the masago roe. I suspect that Sumo Sushi toasts the seeds in-house, as they added a fresh accent to the bite. There was disappointment, in the otherwise excellent piece, in that there was no actual "spice" to the food. Typically, a spicy mayonnaise is made from Japanese Mayonnaise and Sriracha sauce. Here, western Mayonnaise was used with a touch of Sriracha for color. An easy item to contrast, the Japanese mayo is a lighter offering with a more mild flavor while the Western Mayonnaise is a sharper, more heavier flavor with a stronger vinegar component. The vinegar was the dominant note in this piece of sushi, rather than a smooth orchestration. The rice itself was surprisingly well done, if a bit modest. Unlike many grocery store made Sushi, which either go too far in the sugar or vinegar component, the rice used was tasty and balanced, if not a little light. A little more of the sugar-vinegar mixture would bring out the rice and hit perfection. The story repeated itself with the Spicy Tuna Roll. There is an excellent freshness component to the dish, but it was still too modest in the flavor department. There was no heat component to the spicy aspect, but happily there was also no dominating vinegar component. As a straight Tuna Roll offering, all that is needed to hit perfection is a slightly stronger rice aspect. A main course: To my delight, Sumo Sushi offers some traditional favorites for mains: Chicken katsu, Tenpura, Udon soups, and more. For this trip, I ordered the Chicken Katsu. This meal includes Shiro Miso soup (white miso), which is a very mild and light soup that has not been as aggressively fermented as Red Miso. This is the kind of soup you want when you're feeling a bit under the weather. The dinner also included a salad with a ginger dressing. The greens were clean and fresh, with a crunchy bite to them. The Chicken Katsu was almost overwhelming in portion size. Two breast fillets, portioned, fried, and then cut into strips before being placed on your plate. This was, perhaps, the only part of the experience in which some of the authenticity felt lost. Many more traditional restaurants serve up your meal in either the compartmentalized bento-box style trays, or classical Japanese single-purpose plates. In either case, there is a sense of balanced portioning and presentation, which one did not get with this serving. This was the only point where it felt more like an American-Chinese restaurant, than a Japanese restaurant. Service and Atmosphere: Sumo Sushi's dining area has that much valued sense of cleanliness. The air is clean, the floors are kept, the seats look good and the tables are fresh as one would expect from a recently opened restaurant. The wait staff are still getting into the rhythm of operations, but are courteous and attentive. The restaurant carries a wonderful feel of a dining establishment in a larger city, with an active night life, while being tucked away in an unsuspecting part of Derry. Overall Positives: Wide selection of items with a sole focus on Japanese food. Well made, and fresh for reasonable prices. Attentive wait-staff and clean restaurant. A diner could frequent the restaurant many times in succession and be able to enjoy something different each time. Suggestions/Improvements: Dinner items could benefit from sizing, portion and presentation re-evaluations. Some high-end rolls appear a bit redundant. Details of the common rolls would be nice. Switching to Japanese Mayonnaise or similar approach to reduce the stronger vinegar note would help bring the sushi towards perfection. read more

My wife and I have had two meals here, and each time they were fantastic! The tuna sushi and yellowtail sashimi were amazingly fresh. The rolls are wonderful and flavorful as well. I don't eat sushi but the hibachi food was excellent. The lobster tail was especially good. The rice and vegetables were freshly prepared. The drinks were reasonably priced and the service was excellent. I look forward to going there again soon. read more
