My relatives and I get our hair cut by Esther. She's friendly, frank, and fast. My cute Korean style bob with wispy bangs was achieved within 15 min of sitting my butt down on her chair. I asked for some additional adjustments to hide my balding hairline and she complied without question and even other options to make my hairstyle even cuter. I was right to trust her instincts. For hair above shoulder, it's $20 and hair length at shoulder is $25. It probably cost more for longer, but whatever it is, her pricing is very reasonable. For follow-up bang trim, it's $15, so might as well go for the full cut. NOTE: - Bring pictures of what hairstyle you want and address any concerns you have up front. Ask for her honest opinion. - Don't expect a high-end spa experience of hair washing, conditioning, scalp massages, post-cut blow out, free product, etc. - Come with clean and dried hair so she can see your natural hair texture and shape and know what she's working with - You may feel she's super chatty, nosy, or naggy, but it's because she totally cares about her clients and their wellbeing. I saw a sticker showing she accepts credit card, but for $25 haircut, I don't want to undercut her profits any further, so I paid cash + tip. Esther is an awesome and great hair stylist. She's been in this location for over 20 years and is great with hair and has been cutting my hair and my wife for quite a few years. She's reasonably priced and does everything that a high-end salon will do. You must call for appointments although she will take walking when she's not to busy. One of the best stylists I've been to in years! I've been to Esther's salon twice. The first time I took a photo and she cut my hair just like the photo. The second time I forgot the photo, so I trusted Esther to do her thing. My hair grew out beautifully. I have wavy, frizzy hair so it's hard to cut. I also love Esther's salon. Just before restrictions lifted, I decided it was time to get a summer trim. after moving to the area, I was in need of a new stylist and Yelp brought me right to Sun Beauty Salon's door. Esther said she'd be done momentarily and asked me to wait outside. once the previous guest left, she sanitized the space and welcomed me in. Esther is absurdly kind, and patient! We chatted throughout while she got to work. I'm in love with the cut. Oh my goodness, Esther is absolutely fantastic! When I arrived, I was freezing because it was super cold outside. With a big smile, she offered me straight up coffee or tea to warm me up. Such a generous gesture, she definitely put a smile on my face! Then I showed her what the previous hairdresser did to my hair and how I didn't like it. She asked me if I have photos to show her on what I like and I immediately showed her on my phone. My previous hairdresser messed up with my hair because she didn't do my shaggy layers properly. So Esther patiently explained to me how we can fix it and also give me the look that I want. Within 10 mins, she beautifully transformed my hair! She gave me compliments about the way my hair looks and she asked me if I want more layers when she was done. I asked if it was possible to add a bit more layers and she happily did. She said "Always listen to the person when you cut their hair. It's not about what you picture in your head, it's about making them happy and do what they ask". Only $15 plus the tip, I was wowed by her fantastic work! This is my second year in Chicago and I have visited two salons so far. I paid way more to have a haircut that I'm not pleased with. This salon is a hidden gem. I hesitate to write a review about it to let everyone in on the secret! I get my hair colored by Esther. Not only does she have convenient hours and availability at the last minute, but she is very reasonably priced. Especially for Andersonville. Color and a blow-dry is $40. I feel incredibly safe there during the pandemic. She takes the temperature of each customer, sanitizes regularly, opens door when weather permits, and allows just one customer in the salon at a time. Best kept hair salon secret in Chicago? I think so. I just paid less than $20 for a haircut (INCLUDING tip!) by Esther that I routinely pay $60 for at another salon. Not to mention how fast it was! I didn't opt for a wash and I would say I was in and out in 25 minutes- including the time Esther took to show me easy different ways I could style my hair for different looks. I debated writing this, as I've been coming here for a few years and was generally happy before my last cut. The woman who owns this place was always nice, she even seemed to remember me even though I came in maybe once a year. I have long hair and I would get my usual trim, long layers. She was always trying to talk me into shorter layers and one time, she wanted to go for bangs and I agreed. They looked great, I got compliments on the street. They were a pain to grow out, of course. According to the stylist at the fancy place I got my hair dyed (balayage at Epoch Salon) it was a good cut so I felt great about saving money. One time there was a bit of a wait, but not too bad. The owner is sweet, but the last time she was trying so hard to sell me some conditioner she's got, her comments and compliments felt forced and fake. But the main point is, I brought in a picture, discussed the cut in detail, we agreed on the length to cut very clearly, 4 inches, and then she cut off 8 inches. It was WAY shorter than what we agreed on. Also the layers were too long so I almost have triangle head and it's just basic (as in basic white girls) almost "the Rachel," which I'm always desperate to avoid and give lots of instructions not to angle down from the face and is not at all the cut my picture had. I just wanted to get out of there. When I said it was way shorter than I expected, she said I had a lot of dead ends, however, I wish I'd been told before the plan was changed! I asked about the long layers since she'd always been into cutting short layers, and she said, next time you can keep the shorter layers but the bottom part will have grown out. There won't be a next time, I feel betrayed. read more

I hate having my hair cut, and I hate paying a lot for it even more. Which is why for the first few years I lived in Chicago I went to supercuts and once even had my sideburns completely shaved off, among other nightmarish experiences.
