I've been a long-time member of Sun Community Federal Credit Union and never expected to be treated the way I was over a simple $250 fraud dispute. I filed a formal complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)--Case #250729-22734418. Once their review completes, it should be available publicly in the CFPB database. I encourage anyone else affected to file as well. I was scammed using Zelle -- a growing issue across the country -- and even after providing solid documentation, Sun Community denied my claim without even trying to resolve it with Zelle. I was told that because I "authorized" the payment, it didn't qualify as fraud, despite the fact that I was tricked. They brushed off federal consumer protections (like Regulation E) and refused to take accountability. I've since filed a formal legal complaint and am taking the matter to Small Claims Court to fight for what I'm owed -- and to prevent this from happening to others. What hurts the most isn't the money -- it's the lack of care, responsibility, and basic customer support. I've closed my checking account and will be severing all ties once my balance transfer is complete. If you're looking for a credit union that protects and values its members, I strongly suggest you look elsewhere. read more

Don't bank here! This credit union is even worse than banks as far as predatory fees. Yes, their overdraft fees are a few dollars lower but if you go over by less than $1 they will charge you $33 fees endlessly. I have literally gone broke banking here. Advice, if you're living paycheck to paycheck, don't bank here - you will end up paying for their salaries and Christmas party. Also, their transfers and debits and credits take suspiciously long and always seem to work in their favor as they program their system to do so. read more

Very courteous and nice employees. Informative. Given the sheer small size and lack of resources this credit union offers, it is EXTREMELY difficult to speak to a live representative. Get ready to drive to the office in person to get anything important done. Website and app has bugs/errors. You will barely reap the benefits of a credit union. Really awful situation if you NEED to speak to someone on the weekend. It WILL NOT happen. I'm just going to stick with a large conglomerate bank. first and foremost, I would like to say this is hard to deal with. I've been a victim of identity theft they allowed an individual to open up an account and take a personal loan out under my name The compliance manager will not return any of my calls or emails the branch manager at this location, Vanessa Corpuz she does not respond to any emails. She only responded to only one email out of the several emails to be exact 11 emails I sent to her. She only responded to one. The credit union didn't even respond to any correspondence when it came to the lawsuit that was filed. They probably won't even show up to court. Beware they let anyone open up accounts do not do business with them. Find a better credit union. read more

We made a mistake when we went to Sun Community FCU to open two accounts - we didn't make an appointment! We were in the middle of a move to Cathedral City and just didn't think it through. But did they say, "Go away and come back when you have an appointment?" Absolutely not. Vanessa Corpuz, the Assistant Branch Manager, cleared her morning for us. While she got the process started, Alfredo at the tellers' counter (sorry, but I don't remember his last name) took all of our preliminary information. He was terrific. Then we moved into Vanessa's office to finish setting up the accounts. We were probably in the bank for two hours and I'm sure it was an inconvenient time, but Vanessa was professional and friendly throughout. I can't say enough good things about the experience and how happy we are to be banking with Sun Community. They get our highest recommendation. They froze my account and are holding my money hostage because I work in cannabis. They happily accepted my direct deposits for over a year and they clearly said where they were coming from. I don't know what changed but you should not bank with them and you should cancel any accounts with them you have. I have been a customer of Sun Community Federal Credit Union in Palm Springs for decades and I needed to get a personal loan immediately to help my son replace his two air conditioning units for his home which had both broken down. Karina Perez, Service Representative, assisted me by listening to my situation, gathering important information. She then explained that a loan can take from one to two days for approval. I told her I understood but his family had no air conditioning and it's 116 degrees outside and he has 3 kids with no AC. Karina called me 3 hours later with the most incredible news; that I GOT THE LOAN and I could come and pick up the check! Wow, I was so happy and could not thank Karina enough. Normally what takes 2 days to get approved, Karina accomplished in a few hours. She really went above and beyond to help me during this emergency and I can not express my gratitude enough for what she did for me!!! JH read more

The people at the Palm Springs branch are courteous but the banking experience leaves a lot to be desired. If you like an account where every transaction is "nannied," this is the bank for you. Today, I had my groceries and it kept declining at the register. Debit, credit, swiping, and using the chip didn't work. When I called, I was the 12th caller in line. Guess what happened when it got to my turn? It shifted to another automated system. Imagine needing to get food or fuel and not being able to because of a bank that doesn't allow you to make purchases. I even tried to use the ATM - willing to pay the service charge - to no avail. I'm going to withdraw my money and close my account in the morning. I'll be there before the doors open. That's not all, by the way. I deposited a check on a Friday that was supposed to clear on the following Monday. It didn't clear until the following Thursday. It clearly stated that it would clear on the following Monday but when Monday came, the date changed to Thursday of that week. Who has time for a bank that operates like that? I know I don't. As I mentioned, the people are courteous and professional but the banking practices have been so bad that I had to write a review. Heck, I couldn't even add my SCFCU account to my Mobil SpeedPass (to purchase fuel). Oh, that brings up another thing. I was glad I had cash on hand because my card was declined at a Mobil gas station in Palm Springs. I'd give them zero stars if I could. This is definitely not a 21st century bank. First off I never get my cards sent to me in the mail problem #1 and secondly when I go into the branch I'm always met with a attitude especially from Christine. She talks condescending and is always asking personal questions. Since moving to the Palm Springs area three years ago, I have been looking for a bank or credit union where they care about who you are, and I finally found one that really stands out! Sun Community in Palm Desert is awesome, and I don't mean that lightly either. All of their staff in that location are genuinely friendly and really do go out of their way to be helpful. From the first time setting up my checking account about two months ago, through the current experience of securing an auto loan, I only have great things to say about my Sun experience! Kudos go to Amy for all of her terrific assistance! I also have accounts at both Bank of America in Cathedral City and Altura Credit Union in Rancho Mirage. You can count on both to always have long lines and 'could care less' staff. B of A has only one teller most of the time (really?!?) and Altura is not the experience I would expect from a credit union. You are the customer and you do have a choice. Why would you want to put your money with a business that doesn't care about you? Sun Community is totally different, they are there to help their customers and it really does show. Sun Community is a federal credit union, whereas, Altura is not, and it does pay to know the difference. I highly recommend Sun Community Federal Credit Union!!! read more

When I saw that this Credit Union had a 3-star rating I was a little confused? And then I saw it had to five star ratings and a 1-star rating from a typical type, you know the ones that have to find a reason to blame everyone else for their failures I spent my life placing 15 30 million dollars worth of loans monthly with different banks and credit unions. I have been nannied by the best hahaha and I have been with many banks including Wells Fargo Bank of America First Interstate Security Pacific Home Savings and Loan First Interstate Washington Mutual you get the picture. I embarrassed myself in this Branch 6 months ago by doing or saying exactly what the person that raided them one star had done, and wanted to blame it on them, in fact I think I said I was going to take them to court over it, and yes I did write them 5 stars because they not only did not kick me out of the bank they actually bent their own rules for me without me even asking them to do it. There is a reason I stuck with this Bank, I mean Credit Union there is a big difference. After my daughter explain to me how it was my fault, not really my fault but I didn't do what I should have done and wanted to blame someone else for my failure. But the bank was so good and their app is so easy to use and everything works so well and when you call, they normally answer right away for me, but I don't usually blame them for my problem at the moment, I just ask for help and they give it to me. So if no stress, no drama, no lines, no waiting, no typical BS, then yes this maybe what you have been looking for and hopefully the person or gentleman that rated them one star either came to his senses and decided to keep his account open just like I did, then his next rating will be 5 stars. This rating pertains to Sun Fed in general and not specific to the PS branch. Sun Fed is the MOST unprofessional banking organization that I have ever worked with. No matter what time you call the call center, you get a recorded message saying "We are experiencing higher than average call volumes." If it happens all of the time, it is NOT higher than average. It is piss poor customer service. I opened my account in July with both savings and checking. A month later, I still had not received my checks. I called and waited on hold for an extended period of time. I was told to wait another week. I waited two weeks and called again, spending some time on hold. This time I was told the checks had never been ordered and they would place the order. Another month passed and no checks. I called again, waiting on hold an extended period of time. I said I wanted to cancel those checks and order new ones. Originally, they were going to charge me for putting a cancellation on the lost checks. It took a conversation with a supervisor and indicating I would close the account to have them put a hold on the lost checks without a fee. Finally, I received the checks. Since then, I have been bombarded with life insurance promotions and other insurance promotions coming to me as a Sun Fed customer because they have sold my contact info to untold number of companies. They promote signing up for "eco friendly" electronic statements, which I did. But they have no problem selling your personal information to companies sending you a bunch of dead trees. SUN FED IS ABSOLUTELY THE MOST UNPROESSIONAL BANKING INSTITUTION I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. read more

The staff does not seem to be trained on active listening skills given that I was interrupted repeatedly while trying to explain that a Bill Pay transfer had not gone through.
