Best Chinese place in the Columbia area. Chinese food has a tendency to all taste the same when you go to these pop-up stores. Sun Ming makes real authentic dishes though with actual seasonings instead of everything coming out of a packet. Their shrimp toast is the only one that comes close to what I used to be able to get in NY. Whenever I get the lomein I'm blown away by the difference of them vs. competition. On Mothers Day, I had the worst restaurant experience of my life. After placing a takeout order for over $85 (order #404), our food was given to us without any regard for its freshness and quality. The order was placed by phone immediately upon their opening (11:30am) and picked up by Noon. The bone-in spare ribs and chicken wings were hard and dry...so much so that we could not even give them away to our next door neighbors (overcooked yesterday's leftovers)! The "steamed pot stickers" were actually so cold that we knew they were taken out of their refrigerator and never even warmed up (yesterday's leftovers)! The "Beef Brisket in Clay Pot" entree was odd tasting and unrecognizable as being anything that should of been eaten. Both of the Lo Meins, Jag Jang and Vegetable, were so overly salted that neither could be eaten (possible excessive msg to preserve from going bad during storage). The mushroom fried rice and egg foo young were good and a saving grace to at least getting something that we could eat from the order. After dinner, with loads of leftovers still on the table, I called in explaining exactly what we experienced and asked to be credited for the items that we could not eat, the ribs, chicken, brisket and both of the Lo Meins and was told that they understood and would give me a credit toward my next order. I was not satisfied with this option, since I could not see us EVER going back and pressed that the credit be applied to this current order which they finally agreed to do. One hour after this I received a call from Tracy, who seemed disinterested in our experience and demanded I return the food so she could see it. In my opinion, she had the opportunity to both see and stop what the restaurant was serving before giving food to the Public. It is not our responsibility prove to a restaurant that what they are serving is doctored and leftover food. Tracy and her chefs know exactly what they were serving and should have tried to make the customer happy. I am an elderly 68 year old man, who went to this establishment to provide a Mother's Day treat for my wife, daughter and grand kids and all were disappointed. read more

Worst food I have ever had. Ordered an appetizer lunch and egg foo young. The shrimp toast was soggy, like fried dough, and had absolutely no flavor. We just moved to Irmo and our friend staying with us to help our family get settled in ordered from Sun Ming yesterday. Of what we shared, everything was DELICIOUS. We had great choices up North, but they fail in comparison to Sun Ming. Highly recommend this restaurant. It is a little pricey but worth EVERY penny because of the amount of food and quality you receive. Tried this restaurant out for the first time after reading reviews on how authentic the food here was. Ordered the appetizer spare ribs, half Cantonese roast duck, and garlic string beans. The spare ribs and string beans were done very well, but I mainly came to try the roast duck, and it was quite a let down. The meat was definitely overcooked and the skin was not crispy. Service was very attentive though, and the atmosphere is quite nicer than a lot of Chinese restaurants in town. read more

Best Chinese food I've had since coming to SC from the SF Bay Area in CA. Enjoyed the fried Pot Stickers, Lemon Chicken, Beef Tips, White and Chicken Fried rice. Far more than two of us could reasonably finish in one meal. Service was fast and friendly. I have been going here for over 25 years. I'm from the north and this was the best place. I don't like to complain but I have been three times in the past few months. The first time I ordered my standard roast pork egg foo yong and said to my husband. This isn't the same. I hope they're not going downhill. There were miniscule pieces of pork and a TON of onions. Then went for Mother's Day which has been a tradition for 25 years and ordered a wide array of food. All of poorer quality. Went again Friday night and again the egg food yong has hardly a few pieces of pork and a ton of onions. Not sure if I'll be back. Also found out different owner. So so disappointing. read more

I've stopped in occasionally with mixed results. This past week will be the last time. I stopped in and placed my order. I was told it would be about 20 mins before my order was ready. When I returned 20 mins later, I was told it would be another few minutes. While waiting, I couldn't help but notice large tables of people being seated. By now, 40 mins has elapsed and I'm still waiting for my food, while the large tables have already received their food. After nearly an hour, my food finally came out. We ordered a seafood and vegetable dish. It had several small scallops, and a few over cooked shrimp. This seafood came in a sauce with gobs of over cooked pea pods that was just clumped together. These pea pods were limp and not at all appetizing. In addition, we ordered beef chow fun. This dish wasn't all that bad. The flavor was good and noodles were cooked right, but where's the beef? There were a few strips of beef and that's it. The ribs we ordered were good. Finally, we ordered a seafood rice. This could've been great, but again, the seafood was over cooked, and tough. The owner seems nice enough, but given what you're charging, you better pay better attention to quality control. read more

I placed a pick up order yesterday. One of the dishes that I ordered from their menu was "Mandarin chicken" aka orange chicken. I got home and opened the carton and this is what was inside - dry chicken with orange wedges. Needless to say, I wasn't expecting this at all. I didn't take it back. I am a second-generation American-born Chinese guy who knows what real Chinese food is like. I have eaten Chinese food in Hong Kong, San Francisco, and New York City. If you want real, authentic Chinese food that is the closest thing Columbia has to a big-city Chinatown eatery, this is it. The place has a huge menu, including many traditional Chinese items that would be unfamiliar to those who have only eaten Americanized Chinese food. There is a board at the entrance listing specials, including real Chinese vegetables. The restaurant is very clean and pleasant, with excellent service. It has some big, round tables with lazy susans for large parties. The big tables are most frequently populated with big Chinese families. It's a good sign. All of that said, I would advise that if you are not adventurous and would insist on ordering Americanized items like General Tso's chicken, you are missing out on what makes this place the best. I'm sure they do a fine job on egg rolls, egg drop soup, and sweet-and-sour pork, beef and broccoli, egg foo yung, and fried rice, but that stuff is the same everywhere. Go outside your comfort zone and order something different that you can't get at every fast-food Chinese joint in town. Tell the server what flavors you like and ask for help choosing something from the authentic Chinese menu. You'll be glad you did. read more

I am reviewing this as a Vegetarian. Sun Ming is one of the few places that actually has a Chinese menu with more traditional flavors than what you find in American Chinese food. The vegetarian sections of the menu are a little light because many of the dishes are meant to be served family style as a side, not an entree. This is easily remedied however by asking for a tofu substitution on many of their other menu items - just me smart about it. The last time I was there, I had their fermented cabbage with pork made into fermented cabbage with tofu. Sour, salty, fermented ... divine. Warning, fermented cabbage is not a starter dish - you may interpret some of the flavors as spoiled instead of simply fermented. If they ever decide to serve DimSum I will upgrade them to Six Stars. read more

Very clean and friendly restaurant. Huge menu selection of both authentic and American Chinese fare. I was with a group of 11 and using the Lazy Susan in the middle of the table we shared each others entrees. It was a delightful feast! From Tangerine Chicken to Walnut Shrimp to a Beef Eggplant dish that melted in your mouth. No problem with separate checks either. Good place for a quiet meal for two or with a loud large group. Sun Ming is the only restaurant I would recommend in the area for more authentic Chinese food. The location is pretty convenient and accessible; it is off the I-26 in Irmo on St. Andrews Rd. right past the railroad tracks. All the other Chinese restaurants in this area aren't necessarily the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten (Miyo's, a very popular Chinese restaurant in the Columbia area, has decently fresh ingredients), but the flavor everywhere around here is always kind of light and/or bland, and generally just a little bit off compared to the chinese food I grew up with at home and at restaurants in the Los Angeles area. Sun Ming doesn't serve the best Chinese food I've ever eaten, but it is by far the best in this area. A random note for anyone that might be interested: I have heard that Sun Ming also serves dim sum, but I have not confirmed on what days they do this, nor the quality and breadth of the dim sum they offer. At Sun Ming, the menu have two sections, one with the standard Chinese dishes (served in individual portions) and one labeled as traditional Chinese cuisine (which I would suggest ordering off, it is in the center of the menu they provide at the restaurant). The dishes in this section are prepared family-style, meaning that they are served with the intention of everyone sharing in the dish, instead of one individual dish for each person. This is the typical way to serve Chinese food, as it gives everyone a bigger variety of food to choose and eat from. Had a luncheon with 4 friends yesterday. Not many people dining for lunch yesterday, a Tuesday, so if you're concerned about getting in and out during your lunch hour, it shouldn't be a problem. Served very quickly and very friendly service. I asked if I could order something that wasn't on the Lunch Menu and was quickly brought the full Dinner Menu. I ordered Chow Fun which most Chinese restaurants do not offer. This is one of my favorite dishes and I was not disappointed. Generous serving and I took 1/2 home with me in addition to an order of Mongolian Beef for dinner last night. My husband loves the food from Sun Ming and was looking forward to his favorite. It was wonderful. My total bill was $21. That was lunch for me and dinner for 2. Not bad! My friends ordered from the Lunch Menu and had Sesame Chicken which came with broccoli and one ordered Fried Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. Their meals came with an egg roll. All commented their meals were excellent and the price was $7.50 plus drinks each. Everybody needed a take home container. Quality Chinese food with very pleasant surroundings at an affordable price.
