I'm currently a member, I would like to make a few suggestions to help the YMCA become a better experience for all customers. I think there should always be a pool open for open swim not just a small section with one row for kids and parents alike to swim. There are three pools why not use y souths pool just for open swim so that the customers that come here feel valued. Many of us come here with children to use the pool and most of the schedule it's taken up for activities and when it is available for open swim it's not the entire pool. Secondly a hot tub is needed for people that have joint pain as well as soreness. Thirdly y club should be open to a wider range of ages at least 10 years old. My son loves coming here and the other daycares are for smaller children it would be nice if he could join with others without a parent present. I feel 5th grade should be an included age range. read more

I feel like a lot of the reviews were made years ago and a recent review is in order. My family is pretty new to the area and we love the gym. We tried a few other gyms first and nothing comes close to the friendly faces that we encounter at the gym. Viviana, Mads, Aze and Larry are a few of the friendly faces that will greet you as you walk through the door and say hi even when they're off duty. The childcare staff is excellent and made sure to help my youngest get comfortable and used to being away from mama. The childcare girls are a great team and love my boys. The workout center is great and I never have to wait for a machine long. The newly remodeled locker rooms are very nice and worth the wait. Shasta Family YMCA is amazing. I really enjoy working out and taking the classes. The child watch has been wonderful. My children really enjoy going. My son is so happy to see the staff he always blows them kisses when he leaves. They do really cute art projects. It makes a mama heart happy he is in a safe environment. We also do the toddler class he seems to enjoy the tumbling and the music class. we have made alot of wonderful friends at the YMCA. They have really expanded a lot of the programs such as family game night, book club, kid fit classes and kids night out. We enjoy swimming in the indoor pool on rainy days. Excellent pool and locker room. I swim there when I am visiting my in laws. Staff is professional and pleasant. I had a problem with my locker and they were very quick to help me open my locker. I chose to come to the Y after touring a smaller gym in Redding. I think the facility is actually pretty nice despite some of the negative reviews. There are two large pools (one indoor and one outdoor) and they are kept very warm year round, a lot of exercise equipment to choose from inside, an indoor and outdoor basketball court, a play structure for kids, and they even have a cafe area for those needing to get a little work done. Hope they've changed their check in system...my husband of 47 years died here three months ago; he checked in to do his workout, he supposedly passed out; they told me he received CPR and was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead and I was never notified by the "Y" as to his whereabouts. So...if you're loved one is going to this gym to workout, make sure they check in and have emergency information on file. Hopefully you will never have to experience what I have and been told by the "Y" that they just didn't know who he was!!!! read more

After some research and uneventful "free trials" I chose the Y because of their price and pools. The hours are a little inconvenient with my schedule; they ought to open earlier than 8 on the weekends but hey. The outdoor pool tastes a bit funky, I try to not think about it. I usually have no problem securing my own lane. Kickboards and buoys available. Cardio room is usually hopping. At first I thought the place was overrun with young kids just playing on the equipment and generally being in the way; they seem to have dissipated with summer. I haven't had any problems finding an empty machine to use. Zumba in the a.m. is crowded, I'd opt for the evening session if you want to see the instructors. I wish they had turbo kickboxing! The facility is great. But they don't emphasize rules enough. No one wipes down the equipment-- they should have signs all over with cleaning supplies-- every gym I've ever been too, including other YMCAs emphasize that each person wipe down machine after use. People stretch on machines or just today-- guy was watching videos on his phone in one workout room laughing out loud with volume on laying on floor. Why don't you do that at home! Respect the workout environment. Also same day was a man with his mail order bide 40 years younger hanging out using google translate to talk to her and watch her workout. -- next day gym was dominated by teenage boys loud and obnoxious and using every room, including quiet stretching areas. They don't shower it seems and you feel like your in a boys high school. -- tmi like the pool. Lap swimmers are respectful and mature. Wish rest of people were read more

Friendly staff. Recent upgrades were made to devote more space to workout rooms and classes. There are two pools, an indoor and outdoor one. It's good to remember that the "Y" is very much a community outreach organization. If you are looking for "upscale" in a fitness club, this is not it. It's services and facilities are designed to give opportunity to all members of the community, regardless of their economic level. It is used by troubled teens, developmentally challenged adults as well as those just released from jail who may have obtained a free pass for the day so they could take their kids to the pool. With this in mind, do not leave valuables out of your sight. Even a lock on a locker will not protect your items during a workout. Unfortunately, bolt cutters are well-disguised in a gym bag. Keep your wallet, phone, keys with you. Lock your car and do not leave valuables in it. The "Y" does a lot of "good" in this community. read more

First time at YMCA. Went to the advanced yoga class with my SIL, sister-in-law. I was excited to attend with SIL and have some bonding time. I had to fill out a visitor form and have my picture taken, no big deal. The ladies I encountered were friendly. The place is huge, doesn't look that was from the outside! Man o man it was packed with people! In a good was of course. The yoga class was interesting, no fans, no a/c and LOUD music. Not my cup of yoga. I would call myself a level 1-2....mostly a 2. This was advanced with modifications when necessary. I did what I could but it was hard for me to easy my mind and listen to my body with the loud music and soft voiced instructor, accent and all. AND I was dripping with sweat, I wasn't liking this class. I was concentrating more on keeping my feet in one place on my mat with all the sweat it was soo hard! SIL and I left after an hour, it was an hour and half class. I did at least last that long! Yay me! I know the regulars are all accustomed to the instructor and her way of teaching but I was not. I felt she went too fast and was not through in her movements. But I'm just a yogi so what do I know?? Next time I'll not take the advanced class with that instructor. So my rating is purely on the class we took and the staff I came in contact with. I would like to take other classes with my SIL when visiting her another time. There was an indoor pool that had my name on it! LOL BTW~ the class was not Hot Yoga, instructor just chose not to turn on a/c or fans as SIL and I asked about it when walking out. read more

I've just joined and loving it. People are fun and helpful. I'm disabled and there's lots of help. Ill be lifting mega weight in no time! I watched for people being selfish or not wiping machines....honestly all we saw was the opposite. An excellent workout and NO DRAMA! YES! personally. NOT A "SAFE PLACE" as promoted. They have gym rules such as "Wear shirts/shorts at all times," but the place is filled with shirtless teenage boys walking around showing off, and the young girls at the front desk sure don't mind! I don't care to have my teenage daughter surrounded by sweaty boys when we go to exercise. Not to mention they sit at the machines, sweat all over and don't have any towels... disgusting. Another gym rule is "Use headphones" but you often see the employees in the gym playing loud music for their trainees; they couldn't care less that everyone else is paying the same high fees to be there. The YMCA here in Redding is the opposite of what I would think it should be, it is supposed to be about building strong children and familys; but it's main objective is collecting MONEY. The Shasta County YMCA runs it's membership and child care as I imagine the Gastappo would in Nazi Germany, I was threatened more than once to pay money I did not truly owe, or my child would not be able to come back to the daycare. I was volunteering as a child watch person, in trade for membership, and they are now demanding $25.00 for partial membership fees during the month i began volunteer service. I am leaving the YMCA and will not ever return, I have never felt more uncomfortable in any other .establishment. read more

Private swim lessons with Heather at the YMCA in Redding have really paid off for our grandchildren who are 5 and 7. They only get lessons when they are visiting us from LA yet they have made amazing progress. I have been a member the YMCA since 2008 (11 years) and love it! I love the fact that all ages go there and that they cater for everyone. The staff are friendly. The classes are great and lots of them to choose from to suit your needs. The equipment is great. The pool is great. I was impressed with how much they went out to put on a great Halloween party for the little kids with smoke machines, elaborate decorations, candy stations, staff dressed up. My 4 year old loved it. I've had nothing but good experiences with this gym. The employees are all very friendly. Everyone seems to know eachother on a name basis. The classes are what YOU make of them, which I love. Instructors are generally very knowledgeable and offer modifications specifically for you if you just address your personal health set-backs at the beginning of class. Otherwise the classes can be challenging! The day care is great! I've been dropping my now 7 month old off since she was 6 weeks and honestly if she hadn't bonded so well with the employees in there, I may not have gotten back into shape so fast post-pregnancy. It's clean and well attended. The facility overall is wonderful I would say. I don't play basketball or swim but it seems like the place to do it, there is always something going on! The staff is awesome and the Y provides so many important services for the community. The weights are in good condition and aside from the occasional lame man that can't seem to rerack his weights, they gym floor is clean. Unfortunately there are many times in the afternoon when I come to work out on my way home from work where the place is overrun by obnoxious teenagers. Seriously it's over run. I came in about a week ago and found that the women's locker room was wall-to-wall teenage girls and I literally had no place to change. There also aren't a variety of cardio classes available-they are all the boot camp style classes or Zumba. There are tons of other group exercise formats out there, just not at the Y. The issues with the teenagers have become so troublesome that I find I'm not able to use the gym in the manner I would like. In other words I can't go there and be guaranteed that I will have locker room availability to even change. It's disappointing. read more

Hey, this is a nice gym! It has everything you can think of for working out & plenty of them, its clean, usually pretty quite, the employees have always been pleasant. I never have problems having to wait for equipment or the pool. I've been using the Y for over a year & have never had a bad experience there. Only reason not 5 stars is the men's locker room is a little small, it can seem a bit crowded a times. The price is right! read more

Spent all the time doing paper work for a discounted rate for 1 child and they wanted to charge $65 a month. No thanks, I am appalled that this place is receiving taxpayer money as a community service. Being a nonprofit organization, the Y did not get input from it's members in regards to the $650,000. plus project that destroyed a full basketball court, to put in a fitness center for fat people. It's really nothing new, just a program to help young people become more fit. SERIOUSLY?? Redding has fitness centers all over town that don't charge as much as the Y. So why did they do this? At the time, both basketball courts were being used by old and young alike. Now the one court left can not handle the overcrowding for people that want to play. They said that they intend to sign up 1,000 new members with the new fitness center. I seriously doubt if that happens. People will become fit when they are ready. You can't force them to the Y. I now come to the gym and when I see it so overcrowded, I just turn and drive back home. What a waste! I guess they never heard of, 'if it's not broken, don't try to fix it'. With that much money passing hands, I wish someone could investigate the YMCA and it's board members to see if someone is getting a kickback. Nowadays you just can't be too careful. Not coming out with this earlier to its members is very suspicious. They should have been more transparent. Shame on them! read more

The YMCA has had a great reputation until the new director took over. I was a volunteer for over 4 years and have seen the changes. Now it still has the great programs, but some of the people employed there are really rude. Especially the women in charge of the volunteer program. They hire their friends and act like they own the place. It's a complete joke. The computer room smells, the computers barely work. The place is filled with so many homeless & low income people that it's a nightmare to even work out. There is nothing wrong with low income, but when it comes to hygiene well you'll see if you work out there. You can smell cigarettes on the volunteer staff and they smoke near the building. The place is way too crowded to even get on machines anymore. I've been a member on and off for over 20 years and the Y is not the same. It's a real dump to put it mildly. The staff act like snobs like they are somehow so important that we should all bow down to them. It was once a great family place and now it's a typical YMCA like in the bigger cities with the feel of low class. It's unclean and smells. I was sick so much from all the germs in the place because they don't clean it like they use to. Most of the long committed people I know have dropped their memberships because it's lost the appeal it once had. Thank goodness there are other gyms. But if you can't afford to go anywhere else then head to the YMCA. You will get criminals that volunteer there too, plus a whole range of lower class employees and members. Good luck! It's sad that it isn't the same, but when a city gets bigger and a director doesn't care about the place this is what happens. read more

The remodeled cardio/weights area and workout rooms are fantastic! I always work out in the morning, but even if I go in the evening I never have to wait for a machine. We pay about $80 a month for a family membership, which is not too bad, although I wish we would get more of a break on the classes/camps/etc. read more
