Baby it's a cold 39° outside and a bowl of hot grilled chix pho in beef broth was tapped to nix the damp in my bones. At $16, the grilled chicken was aplenty , so much that it made for a full size 2nd meal. Moist with grill marks it had the signature lemongrass flavor though now submersed deep in the broth, it loses a bit of the beauty of fresh grilled chix. The beef pho broth however was much less intense and complex than I prefer (Pho Van) so somewhat disappointing but a great fill with aok broth on a cold day. Had to ask for Cilantro on side which was missing from bean sprout basil lime side plate that waiter brought promptly but said it was added to broth..hmm ok Hubby got the Seafood Basil Stir Fry $18 requesting no added sugar to kill the heavy hand in the sugar bowl that tends to creep in, and it was better as the sweet soy still is still used. Perfectly stir fried, shrimp mostly, 2 scallops and one large mussel, crisp veggies- snow peas, beautifully trimmed bells, carrots, w-chestnuts, his plate was cleaned ;) Top that with Kirin Ichiban draft only $4 every day, now that's a big deal! Close to the hubbub of Hawthorne proper south of 39th Ave/Cesar Chavez it's a short block to Bamboo House and years on from last visit, the updated decor is a huge vibe win. Gone are the umpteen jungle of plants and open tables of 80s and step into a bamboo den with wood caged lights, bamboo & rope open dividers and ceilingscape, more intimate turquoise booths, central long booths spaced with tables and a new bar, love it! We ordered pickup so I cannot speak to the entire experience but, we were delighted with Bamboo House! The ordering process was easy, the prices were fair, portions were plenty and food was great! When I arrived to pick up the food, it was ready to go(within 20 minutes of ordering), the staff member was friendly and offered utensils. Bamboo House might be easy to miss, but worth keeping in your lunch and dinner rotation. They're above the "cool" part of Hawthorne but worth walking a little farther. And they have parking! Getting a table is easy and service is quick. I was happy to see them on the Sandwich Week list recently and stopped by. Their sandwich was creative with Imperial Rolls inside and delicious, and we appreciated the vegetarian option. In the past I've also had their pad see ew, wonton in chili oil, and crispy tofu. I picked this restaurant, I was going to take my church group for April, after doing some research on them, but we were out of town, but we've not been here before, so I'd like to check it out now, to see why it's getting good reviews on YELP. 1. Parking on the spot, not on the street. 2. Nicely decorated, as you enter the room, was greeted, but couldn't see the greeter. (Behind the panel). 4. Able to sit where I want (window). 5. Given a menu, but it took us a while to order. (We're both supposed to be taking it easy, wasn't really sure if we want a big meal or just comfort food). 6. ALL the foods (appetizers) we ordered, were all comforting to us, tasted exactly how we want our Asian foods to taste, "very good, and flavorful!" 7. Waiter, kind and patient with us, but knows very little about the menu. We ordered the following appetizers: Crispy Imperial Rolls, Tempura Shrimp, Wontons in Chile Oil and Wonton Soup. Stepping in for the first time, we were immediately welcomed with a friendly smile, which was lovely. The atmosphere was good, but honestly, some background music would have really elevated it. It was quiet enough to easily overhear conversations from the only other couple there. Now, for the star of the food: the rice! It was my absolute favorite dish, bursting with incredible flavor. The salad rolls were also fantastic, and the meat and shrimp combination was spot on. I ventured out with the wonton soup, and while the broth was quite good, it felt like it was missing a key ingredient to tie it all together. The biggest miss for us was the wontons in chili oil - it had a sweet, almost fishy oil taste that wasn't what we were expecting. We ordered for delivery. Foods came within 20 minutes. We got free delivery as we ordered more than a certain amount, but delivery fee was just around $4 if we had to pay, which was very cheap. Canh chua has authentic southern style. Of course it's a bit water down compared to our homemade but it's quite good for a restaurant food. I liked how they packed it too: separate bean sprouts and herbs from the broth. The skewers were very good. Beef salad also flavorful. My picky Vietnamese mom liked everything. I am 100% Vietnamese, born and raised in Viet Nam until I was 20 years old. I am so mad at how places like Bamboo House called themselves Asian Comfort Foods and strayed so far from authentic Vietnamese foods in the name of fusion and to cater to non-Vietnamese and non-Asian customers. Full disclosed: (1) I am in search of authentic Canh Chua and Thịt Kho/Cá Kho Hột Vịt in PDX since my beloved Miss Saigon Bistro was permanently closed a month or so ago, (2) Against my reservations after reading multiple mixed reviews about Bamboo House, I still decided to give them a chance before I made my verdict, (3) I did not see any reviews about Canh Chua and Thịt Kho, so it was a red flag, yet I still wanted to give them a chance to proved me wrong; and oh my goodness was I in for a momentous disappointment!, (4) I even called ahead to ask if there were any Vietnamese (owner, staff, and kitchen crew) at all to at least gave me that assurance that it would not be all Americanized Vietnamese foods. Service was friendly and prompt since I was the only patron during my stay. One party left as I walked in, and another came in as I left. There were three picked up to go while I was there. Spacious sitting room with plenty of room for groups and a private table with a divided wall toward the back. On the menu was printed Asian Comfort Foods! I was left angry and in disbelief with the food quality and the inauthenticity of dishes I ordered and falsely advertised, printed, and posted on the wall and their menu. When I got my food, they were not like what was listed on the menu or a photo posted on the wall for "Braised Eggs" and "Caramelized Pork." I pointed out to the only white waiter-he said this on the phone when I asked (I could hear the kitchen staff and one front staff rolled silverware and spoke Vietnamese the whole time); he politely told me, "That is not our picture." Canh Chua Cá/Sweet and Sour Soup, $17: way too sweet without any hint of sour at all, three pieces about palm size of white Swal Fish fillet, lot of bean sprout, but not much of other veggies, came with a cup of steam rice. Thịt Kho/Vietnamese Caramelized Pork & Eggs, $16. You have to look at my collage photo with this review to see the false advertisement in print for yourself. At least on their printed menu, it listed "fried eggs." It was Liquified, NOT AT ALL Caramelized. Again, watch my clip to believe it. As for taste and flavor, it was way too sweet. I should have stopped there after the two dished above, yet I wanted to be fair and had the whole experience, so I ordered the Iced Milk Coffee for $6.00 (I asked and was confirmed that it was indeed the Vietnamese Coffee/cà phê sữa đá). Again, it was too sweet and too creamy. Black Sticky Rice Coconut Ice Cream, $6.00: the only item on the menu for dessert. This typically serves with sugar topping, so I applaud them for pairing it with coconut ice cream for sweetness. The ice cream had no flavor, and the sticky rice was undercooked. My total check was $45.00, so Not Asian Comfort Foods! At this point, I would not drive back to this side of town to give other items on their menu another chance. If you want non-authentic Vietnamese Foods, then by all means, have at it with Bamboo House! Otherwise, there are better foods elsewhere in PDX. Bonus: they have their own parking lot! P.Y. I popped into Bamboo House on a recent December trip to Portland and couldn't be happier that I checked 'em out. The weather was COLD with a capital C that day and I was definitely craving something hot to warm me up. Their House Pho delivered. Filled with delicious meat and tendon (my fave), it was massive, filling, and hit the spot before the long drive home to Seattle. While waiting for my food I enjoyed a Thai Ice Tea too - always a fave. The service here was quick and friendly, and the place was clean. Wow! Such rich, strong flavors! Be adventuresome with this menu, everything we've tried has been a surprisingly good and very rich flavor! Tonight, we ordered the dumplings in chili oil and the fried tofu appetizers first. The dumplings were interesting... all the flavor of typical pork dumplings in slightly sweet chili oil sauce, but... none of the burn your face off heat. Normally, those two things are a trade-off and you find dull flavors when spice is removed, but here... somehow the flavor was intense, but the heat was not at all strong (I like hot and spicy foods, but this did not disappoint at all). The tofu, now that was the standout of the evening! The tofu was fresh, fresh, fresh and fried in tempura batter (why hadn't I thought of that? most recipes proscribe potato or corn starch). Dipping this in the sauce, which reminded of a more condensed version of pho broth was so great. I want more. I want to order just a table full of apps next time OK, on to the mains. Miki had the Tofu and Eggplant, while I had the Vietnamese Beef Soup. Miki's dish was also quite strongly flavored, though a bit sour for her tastes (she just doesn't like sour things), though I found it once again, intense and wonderful. My Beef Soup arrived BOILING and it kept bubbling for quite a while. Once it was no longer molten, I started eating meat and carrot with baguette dipped in the soup. The baguette is probably An Xuyen, and was crispy on the outside and fluffy-wuffy inside and soaked up that broth wonderfully. Oh my, this was SO good. It was like a Vietnamese spin on pot roast, with meat so tender and easy to cut with a spoon and broth again like a super intense pho. Altogether wonderful. We ate until we could simply eat no more and had leftovers that were enough for dinner the next day (the amount of rice they gave us was unusually generous, but all portions were that way too). And, they are so nice here. I've eaten here with friends before and had the Pho, which was very good and service was always so friendly and open. When we left, we asked our server for a tiny favor. I won't repeat it here, because then everyone might start asking and it might be a problem. But, he quickly and graciously acquiesced, really helping us have a wonderful evening not just here, but shopping nearby. I finally had a chance to try this restaurant that I've now walked by probably 3-4 times. The owner is honestly so nice and was very welcoming to talk about his restaurant and how he came to take it over recently. First off, I enjoyed the skewers (they came as 3), they came with a peanut sauce that was delightful to dip in. I did also get to try their baos but not my fav. Then I ordered canh chua which is one of my favorite Viet soups. There were 2 options for protein, swai and shrimp. Usually the soup is served with catfish, but the owner did inform me that they changed this to cater to folks (ppl of Portland) not used to bones. :( cmon y'all let the food of my ppl be cooked properly. The soup was good (a very shareable portion! As it should be), but not my fav. Still, it was very nice they offered this soup, I feel like it's a rare find mostly in Portland. The restaurant is more focused on individual entrees with a few dishes for family style fyi. But still I'd definitely say give them a chance and talk to the owner about the food and how it's usually made! Great pho! Location: They have a small parking lot outside of their restaurant and plenty of indoor seating. The restaurant itself is very clean and spacious. Food: I ordered their rib pho and it was so good! The meat fell off the bone. The broth was also delicious. They also have a small bar where you can order some beers and other beverages. The food here is also very reasonably priced. The rib pho was $17 and the portion was pretty big. Service: The servers here are very thoughtful and attentive. The food came out fast, and they consistently check in with the table, we got our check fast, and they even asked if we wanted anything to-go. Came here on a weekday and it was surprisingly busy. The waiter was also the sweetest and didn't even break a sweat despite being the ONLY WAITER working that shift (he even confided in us that he wasn't supposed to work but he came to help -- God bless his soul) so it was understandably busy. Shared the chili wonton which honestly I would've just had by itself with a bowl of rice on the side because it's a good portion for 1. The sauce was soooo yummy that I even kept dipping the complementary shrimp chips in them!! We also shared the salt and pepper calamari as an appetizer and it was so good! Even the onions were ridiculously delicious and they're just toppings, not the main part. My entree was the crab noodle soup and it was A LOT! The portion was huge, the broth was flavorful, and they didn't skimp on the crabcake (Viet version, not the ones you see at Bonefish Grill lol). If I lived there, I would've gladly taken the rest home but I was on vacay with my gorlfriends and we've had a packed itinerary with other food places. I've been here a few times during the lunch hour on weekdays. Every single visit, I am the sole customer. Which is another reason why I did not have high expectations for this place.
