This restaurant was terrible. We waited about 10-15 minutes before the waiter finally came to our table. He took our order and brought my tacos, but the meat was burnt. As soon as he dropped off the food, he turned around and left without checking on us. By the time I had a chance to say something about the burnt meat, he was gone. It took another 20 minutes before he came back to our table, so I never had the opportunity to tell him the problem when the food was first brought out. Unfortunately, they did not return my money. The waiter basically dropped off our meal and disappeared, and no one came back to check on us for a long time. Because of that, I ended up paying for food that I didn't even enjoy. The food here is traditional weekend mornings at abuela's house. Corn tortillas are just as big as the flour tortillas. Beware of the corn tacos...they are huge and give healthy portions in the taco. The younger staff is a bit lacking in customer service, but we lucked out with an awesome waitress, where I felt like my aunt was taking care of me. The place is very economical for the portions they serve. I recommend going. I give a 3 only because some of the staff needs retraining on customer service. read more

Went to eat beef soup. We were served soup when I asked for chips and salsa. I was told there would be a charge. I asked why a couple days before when we ordered same thing we got chips and salsa without asking or charge. I was told not lunch time. It was 11:45 and told them I just ordered lunch item. So I told them to take soup back and I was leaving. I was bullied my lady cashier that I had to pay for it anyway even though I hadn't touched it. They added an extra tip warning!!!! I was already on the fence on whether to keep going to Sunrise. The food is good and the Panchos especially come with a lot of fajita meat for a good price. However, I've heard lots of reviews about the restaurant having rats in the past (on the news even) and there was a post about someone having a fly on their plate. My friend also had gotten a burger with bone chips and he told them after the first bite, didn't eat it and sent the food back and was still charged for it!!!They argued that it was balls of grease but he showed them that it was hard and it was bone and likely to chip his tooth. Still dummy me wanting good food and a good deal, I just decided to stay away from ground beef. Also, the uncleanliness reviews were 1-2 years old and it looked clean inside the restaurant so I thought they surely had cleaned up their act. I got my food to go. I added a tip and kept my filled in receipt to reconcile as per my norm. When I looked at my Discover bill, I noticed they had added an additional $2 tip to what I had already tipped!!!! I was there on July 15. Ordered a chicken sandwich with fries. But the chicken sandwich was so small and the fries were cold that I actually lost my taste for the food. I have taken snapshots of the food that you can barely see the chicken is sandwich or just the fries. The owner was there at the time and I suggested he actually turn on the fan since it was too hot and never turned it on. The owner just ignored us and was very unfriendly at the end as well and it it seems he just wanted payment for the food. That was his main concern. How disgusting!!!!!!. So it had been a hot second since I've been to this restaurant. Decided to have breakfast with mom and I ordered a taco of lengua on a flour tortilla. (My fav.) As I opened up the taco to add a little bit of salt I noticed a little bit of skin still on the meat. Not a big deal, just take it off. Then another piece, then another, then another, then another ..... I did let the server know that he needed to inform the cook that lengua should be peeled before served, perhaps he doesn't know. After peeling so many tiny pieces , I took the first bite, was already cold by now, but whatever, just eat it. I took a second bite and it made my stomach squeamish a little bit because the tortilla was super soggy at this point. I am assuming the lengua was not drained well when they served their soft tortillas. Bite number three is the one that did me in. Apparently I bite into a really hard, rough and bumpy piece of skin that was left on the meat. So that piece of skin rubbed my tongue and my pallet just the perfect spot to make me gag so bad that I had to spit it out into my napkin. I could no longer eat that taco. I most definitely did not want to eat anymore. But to appease my mother, who was enjoying her food, I ordered a small soup and asked the server to please remove it from my ticket. He assured me it had to be done at the register. Needless to say the cashier refused to remove it off the ticket saying that I ate the entire taco and left maybe about an inch to an inch and a half. Even after informing her that there was more than half of the huge taco on the plate and that if she opened up the napkin, she would find the regurgitated taco there, she still refused to remove the taco off of my ticket insisting I ate that discussing "food" and that the napkin was empty. I refused to pay her for it but my mommy, being the conflict avoider that she is , just paid the cashier. I informed the cashier that next time (which there won't be for me) I would openly throw up on the plate so they can see it clearly. I informed her that I would definitely be posting something online to let people know. She quickly started to whisper to see if there was anything she could do. There was a man sitting at the table by the register. Apparently, he is the owner's son. She explained to him the situation, and he just shrugged his shoulders and walked to the back of the house not giving one shit about his customers. Lots of fond memories of this place growing up and eating here with my parents. Finally was able to bring my own kids here for breakfast today. The Barbacoa was delicious. My husband's fajitas were exceptional. My kids devoured their pancakes, eggs and bacon. They also love how they each got their own orange juice tumblers so they didn't have to share. Lol. The fish was barely cooked and in huge chunks. Also contained artificial crab and God knows what kind of shrimp it contained. Service was bad, no refills. When I confronted the manager, she got defensive and said they've been serving the caldo like that all day. Yikes. I am not a fan of Tex-Mex food. Let me just say that right now. I've been to this spot once before after an art show at the Weslaco Museum (which was awesome!). Last time I had tacos and I remember liking them but they were a bit greasy. Still delicious and low priced though which is always what we are looking for right?! This lovely day after Xmas I ordered a small shrimp cocktail. It was lovely and delicious but pretty spicy! It had a ton of little chopped up jalapeños which I ended up digging out. I got a whole basket of crackers which cracked me up :-) On a side note my friend ordered a Michelada and she totally hated it. My parents brought me left overs (Tacos mexicanos de fajita) and WOW. The tacos were beyond flavorful! I'm a huge taco fan and have visited my fair share of places in the valley but THESE stood out. I'm actually disappointed that this place has 3 stars...I even talked my friend out of coming here for his birthday because of the reviews but I wished we would've visited here instead! We got up from the table and left. We have been going here for years and this was our last trip. Just picked up a botana for two and a chicken quesadilla. Main part of the botana was delicious but the soup that came with it was just a large cup with juice, no veggies or anything. Feeling a little sick I always start craving some caldo to keep the germs away. However, when you're at work in a city you don't nagivate except for your office and back home it gets a little harder to find quality food. With sniffles and a headache I asked my boss where the best spot for caldo in Weslaco was and she, without hesitation, said Sun Rise Cafe; so I put an order in for a large caldo de res, and off the previous comments on yelp, an horchata. Considering it was a to-go order and caldo (as in already made, left stewing all day) the order was of course ready in no time and sitting and waiting for me as I walked in. The large is perfect for two servings (today's lunch and tomorrow's). When I picked up I asked for extra limes (becuase usually restuarants give you the key limes, tiny, no juice, and you need about 15 to get your caldo just right). Lo and behold when I opened the bag at the office the limes were HUGE and the original amount that they gave me was more than enough for my large caldo. something that has NEVER happened. so right off the bat I was impressed. The caldo was a perfect piping hot, not scalding, not luke warm... juuuuuust right. The tortillas and rice that came with it were delicious. Hearty, homemade corn tortillas and rice i started eating out of the foil bag instead of waiting to put it in my soup. The caldo itslef was perfectly steamed, although the veggies were a little big which at first glance worried me. Nothing was finely chopped but rather huge half potatoes and two to three inch thick carrots and zucchini. Usually this would be a problem since restuarants don't slow cook things enough for this to be cooked all the way through but at Sun Rise everything in the caldo, veggies and meat included, were slow cooked to tender yummy-ness. The vegetables and meat came apart with my little plastic spoon with little to no effort. Most definitely lived up to the boss' recommendation. The horchata was a little sweet at first, but not artificially but rather becuase there may have been a little too much condensed milk. It tasted exactly like the atole my grandma and mom make so that was a nice little food flashback for my tastebuds. All in all amazing food and drink I'll definitely be trying other things on the menu soon. read more

Some of the best chilaquiles I've ever had. The flour tortillas were noticeably home made and delicious. The waiter was really good, my drink never went passed half-empty. Had a principio de menudo, the spices were perfect!! Will definitely be making this my breakfast place in Weslaco. read more
