Visited Monterrey Cafe for lunch. Restaurant has a nice traditional look and feel. Ordered the Tampiquena plate. I requested beef fajitas, two cheddar cheese enchiladas, a crispy corn taco with ground beef filling. The plate included rice and beans, guacamole and a choice of tortillas. I asked for flour. When my plate arrived the food looked hot, tasty and freshly made. After giving everything on my plate a try, here is my subjective assessment of the meal. Again, this was my only visit so I didn't try anything else. Service: 5 out 5, servers were friendly, helpful and attentive. You can tell they take pride in their jobs. They all wore matching black T-shirts. They refilled my drink and stopped by to ask if I needed anything else. Atmosphere: 5 out 5, not fancy but who cares. It was clean, comfortable and inviting. It feels like it's been there since 1972. Food: 3 out 5, although the items on my plate looked fresh and tasty, I felt only two items really stood out. The crispy taco was the best item on my plate. It was crunchy and delicious. The flour tortillas were freshly made and delicious. However, the beef fajitas were bland and chewy. The cheese enchiladas seriously lacked flavor. The cheese filling and enchilada sauce could and should have been better. The rice and refied beans were flavorless. Overall, the flavors were muted and I would say needed more seasoning. I wanted to give it a higher rating. I may try going again in the future but I'll order something different. They serve breakfast too. read more

Everything about this place was nothing short of amazing. I'll start with the service!! All the severs were kind and were always smiling. Very helpful when my mother in law had trouble understanding the menu. One of our servers explained in detail the plates and was so patient about it. The food! I thought the menu would be all Mexican food but it's more like Mexican and home cookin. They offer fried chicken!!! My plate was a "mini" but very generously served. This spot has been around a long time, and I'm surprised that nobody has taken the time to review it yet. I had the "Quiky" which is a Chicken Fried Steak w/ your choice of fries or onion rings [both hand-cut], a salad, and a dinner roll. The CFS was fork tender, and the onion rings were fantastic. My Auntie had the Fried Chicken w/ Fries, and she said that the chicken reminded her of Grandma's. That's a really good thing!! The steak and enchiladas were very good but the steak was over cooked. The steak was flavorful but hard to eat. The fries were good and the beans were great. My wife had the chicken soup which had lots of potatoes and vegetables which she said was very good. Not a fancy restaurant but clean and neat. They must have changed owners because the food was like leftovers from yesterday and heated in the microwave. The chicken was very hard and had no taste while the onion rings we're burnt and overlooked. Seems they use other people's leftovers which placed a bad taste in my mouth. I've eaten at Monterrey before but I'll have to wait before eating here again. The staff answering phones and delivering food to my vehicle was excellent, the food... not so much. Every temperature you could think of was in the order. Cold, hot, warm, not so warm, and colder. Then because of the different food temps the food good, dry, then horrible. It's like they made the food before, chilled it, heated it on the stove, then in the microwave before sending it out. The food I ordered was a Quickie, a minibotana, and a side of fries. This place is very unassuming and you're likely to miss it if you aren't looking but if you take the time to go in you'll get some very good food. The menu isn't the most extensive but the portions are some of the best bang for the buck that you'll get in Weslaco. I recommend the Taco Madre (Spanish puns ftw) which I barely managed to finish, those with small stomachs prepare yourselves. Delicious breakfast! Oh my god! It was amazing and so fast. Our service was great and we were so full. I had an egg breakfast taco with rice and salsa verde and my boyfriend had a breakfast plate with potatoes and chorizo, beans, and a hashbrown. This is my favorite restaurant in the Weslaco area, and any area of the Rio Grande Valley. Parking is on the side (can exit behind the restaurant) or on the street of downtown Weslaco. The menu is large and has too many choices! It even has breakfasts, including oatmeal, which was real real good, for any type of restaurant. They quickly bring out great chips with REAL delicious sauce, that one can tell has been freshly chopped with tomatoes, jalos, cilantro, onion, etc. Service is fast and delivery of the food is fast. There are tvs to watch if one wanted to. I usually order the chicken tacos, and am always happy with it. Prices are reasonable. Service always great, often get two waiters, as the food preparer, I believe, often delivers it. I would eat here every day if I could! My number one! read more

Tonight I got to enjoy my very first carne guisada from Monterrey Cafe. Simply one of the best dishes I have had the pleasure to taste! These wonderful folks, along with the Weslaco Crimestoppers, donated these wonderful meals to front line workers staying at the Hampton Inn. Their kindness and generosity was overwhelming.
