My 2 kids and I came here on Sunday night. Our first time. We made a reservation for 6:30p and waited about 25 min. I noticed a ton of people were either arriving or waiting for their reservation. We noted it must be good! We started to lose patience then got seated. WOW! the service was impeccable. We loved our waitress! I wish I would've gotten. her name! My daughter who is super picky , ordered a California roll with no avocado .It came with a little avocado and we tried to not be difficult & kept it. The waitress was so sweet, she ordered my daughter mochi ice cream for trying it! Now for the food .. outstanding. my Son and I LOVED the fish. it was melt in your mouth amazing. Was in town on an anniversary date with my wife and found this spot across the street from our hotel. Thoroughly pleased. The service and food were top notch. We sat at the bar and were provided with great service by the Sushi chefs (who even provided us w free samples of fish we were curious on). We got blue fin and Kurodai sashimi along with the lobster roll and yellow tail roll. Their spicy edamame was an excellent appetizer to the already great food. We found this place on Yelp, so there's like 4-5 Japanese restaurants near Santa Barbara that showed when I typed in search. Although this is a new business and 25 reviews with 4.5 star rating, we decided to give it a shot and hope it is a hidden gem. We came in for a quick dinner before heading back to Orange County from Sequoia National Park. Starving so you know we were gonna basically think anything is damn yummy by the time the food is served. SO WRONG! Probably the worst sushi I've had. We ordered: Toro and Ikura sushi Chicken Donburi Avocado and eel roll Tempura Lobster Roll Check:$61.74 Here is what we felt inadequate and needs improvement: 1. Toro and Ikura sushi and avocado and eel roll: quality is like eating at a revolving sushi place or fast food sushi places. Worse than supermarket sushi. Honestly. 2. In the menu, there's chicken donburi and chicken teriyaki. When I placed the order I specifically asked the waiter if the chicken donburi was like oyako don. Waiter said no it's chicken teriyaki. Then why call it something else and mark the price higher than the chicken teriyaki and beef teriyaki? 3. Lobster roll was cut in 6 pieces. Thinly cut. Each piece is about 1.5 cm thick. Look it up on metric ruler if you don't know. The worst park was that it got pieces of lobster shell in the roll and I almost chipped my tooth. 4. Price was ridiculously high for the quality and quantity of the food. If this restaurant opened in LA, Torrance or OC it won't last a year. You can trick someone with limited experience with eating sushi but you can't fool with people who eat this kind of food almost every day. UPDATE ***** By the way, just an hour after I left I noticed that I'm getting rashes. And I am not allergic to shrimp, or any food. I can't believe it. There's delicious sushi in Santa Barbara! If you've been in the area long enough, you'll know that the Asian food around here is meh -- especially the sushi. For a city with some of the best seafood in the world, they really lack qualified sushi chefs and fresh ingredients for these fishy delights. However, Sun Sushi will blow you away with their hospitality and delicious dishes. Unfortunately, their omakase is no longer on the menu. They still have the six-step, however, and plenty of original rolls. Dishes like a dragon roll (eel, avocado, and a California roll) may be typical, but are done with very high quality fish. The seared tuna topping their box roll was buttery, slightly taut from the sear, but delicious with just a light dab of spicy mayo. I'm generally not a fan of cream cheese in rolls, but the variety of fish in their State Street Roll makes it all worth it. Their nigiri is also delicious. We skipped the fish ones and went for tamago (steamed egg) and inari (sweet bean curd). The rice comes wrapped in the tamago, which looks incredibly impressive, and the inari is light and refreshing. And their service? Fantastic. The servers are very responsive and attentive. One waitress was taking good care of a table where a woman spilled her water and hurried off while she cleaning up the area, and none of the people at her table even thanked the waitress for it. Here's your friendly reminder that the folks that work here may be paid to serve you, but you should treat them with respect and regard for the fact that they're likely working a job you said you wouldn't touch. I wish I could give them a fifth star, but I kept finding bones in my eel earlier today. Hopefully, this is a one-time occurrence, as I'd really like some more eel from here. It was just that well cooked. If you're willing to pay the premium, Sun Sushi is the way to go. We spent $34 each, and as folks in college and/or riddled with student debt still, it was a delicious meal we won't forget. You might have to hear some rude fellow customers, but please make this place your first stop when you want sushi in Santa Barbara. read more

Decided to try this place since it got good reviews so far! I came in around 5pm on a Saturday night for takeout. I was happily greeted by the host and the sushi chefs behind the beautiful bamboo wall. I ordered the spicy yellowtail roll, soft shell crab appetizer, I love crab! And a cali hand roll. They can make handrolls of any of the menu items. Took only 15 minutes or less since they weren't very crowded maybe 8 customers. And happily on my way home to savor the sushi! The host guy even offered me ice water while I wait since it was like 85 degrees today! I would have given them a 5 star since the sushi and soft shell crab was outstanding but they forgot to give me wasabi and ginger. I'll definitely be back! Next time on a Tuesday or Thursday night when they have freshly flown in fish from Japan and have a special menu to reflect the freshness. read more

I love sushi and i love sushi even more here on the west coast because the yellowtail is OFF THE HOOK. So much more flavorful than i'm used to! So Sun Sushi is great because they really do focus on sushi- there are a few other dishes they offer like tempura but i mostly saw sushi on the menu. I love love love spicy tuna on crispy rice- consider trying it because it is yummy. We mostly got regular rolls and only tried 2 of their special rolls. Amazing! We went to Sun Sushi last for the first time last night and are so happy we did! The recent reviews are right on!! The exterior of the restaurant, tucked into a corner of a plaza, down plays the deliciousness that awaits you inside. The interior is simple, clean, tidy, nothing fancy - it really lets the quality of food speak for itself. Patrons can sit at the sushi bar or at tables. The eatery is smartly compiled of two-top tables so they can easily be shifted around to accommodate large groups. One review I read mentioned showing up as close as you can to opening time because this place is popular and a wait list does form. They were right. We fortunately called ahead and got our name on the list (for 2 people) and we're promptly seated on a Saturday evening. Shortly thereafter the number of people grew. I ordered the Seaweed salad and it was so good even my husband, who is not a fan of seaweed, liked it! We tried the Volcano Roll, Spicy Tuna And California roll. Delicious!! You can tell every ingredient is high quality. Every piece tasted fresh, flavorful and you can tell a lot of thought has been put into everything. Prices are very reasonable. There is a list of specials that likely change often because they're written in a white board. I'm excited to go back and try more of the menu!! This restaurant has to be one of the best sushi restaurants you can find in Santa Barbara. The service, the fish, the prices, the atmosphere... Simply just wow. Please, do yourself a favor and dine at this restaurant. We loved every single dish we ordered. In particular, the Tsukiji market special. Yes, the famous fish market in Tokyo! They receive these fish from Japan, and you can taste the quality. Well worth the money. I don't remember all the names of the fish, but the servers were so knowledgeable, and explained each type. The dessert was so tasty, we ordered the ice cream tempura (yum!), and two slices of cheesecake. We chose the mango, and the matcha green tea. This has got to be one of the best Japanese restaurant in SB. I highly recommend it to everyone who is a Japanese foodie! They have a good variety of food on their menu and they even have sushi omakase style. All the ones that me and my friends tried were really delicious and the fish is of high quality and fresh. Their salmon skin salad is outstanding and by far my personal favorite out of all the foods we tried. The ambiance made my dining experience much more enjoyable as it reminds me of Japanese restaurants I went to when I was in Tokyo. Service is of course excellent which is always the case with Japanese. Very friendly staff, accommodating and attentive as well. What a great find! Stumbled across this place on Yelp when another place that looked good had a phone number that went straight to voicemail when I called for reservations. I can't believe I never went here before. I live a mile away and have driven by it so many times. I only had 3 items here. I thought 2 out of the 3 were delicious. I had the Box Sushi, which is a seared fish and crab sushi. I was really delicious. I will be back for that very soon. I also had the tofu agedashi which is fried chunks of tofu in a beautiful light broth. This was also delicous. The only think I didn't like was the crunch roll. I'm sure other people would like it, but after eating the box roll I wasn't impressed. I can't wait to go back! read more

The outside look of the restaurant may throw you off, don't fret -- the inside is cute and pleasant. My experience with Asian food in Santa Barbara is that overall there is a lack authentic and good quality Asian food. Sun Sushi is an exception to that. The quality of fresh fish is excellent. When it comes to sashimi and nigiri, there is no way of hiding or masking subpar ingredients. I had both the toro, uni, yellowtail and a few other times which were all very good.
