I really wish I lived closer to the Scarborough location because this one just isn't it. The customer service here is typically cold and not very professional. The girls at the front desk tend to talk down to you, and if you decline one of their upsells they become noticeably rude or short. I always try to be polite, and I worked at a tanning salon before so I'm familiar with how things work, but I've been spoken to here like I have no idea what I'm doing. Going tanning should feel like a little self-care moment, but here it feels like you're inconveniencing them. I've never had these issues at the Scarborough location. If you can, go there instead or to Glow in South Portland! read more

Extremely disappointed with my experiences here lately. The staff is consistently rude and incapable of doing the simple tasks included in their job description. For how much it costs to tan here, the service and equipment should be top notch. I cancelled my account of many years today. The polite and friendly staff I have been accustomed to no longer exists at the Portland store. I live in the neighborhood. I am a long time customer and the latest staff are not friendly to me. The last several visits I left assuming the staff isn't nice to me because I am transgender. When I cancelled my account no one asked why leaving me to believe my business isn't wanted at a neighborhood business. I had a gift card to use and there was a disconnect between the local franchisee and corporate (which I think was corporate's fault). Either way I was less than thrilled with the color of my spray tan - it looked pretty orange. The machine felt new but I just didn't love the results. I was in and out quickly and the price was right - so if you're on a tight budget I'd still recommend STC. But if you have a little extra to spend I'd recommend just springing for a custom airbrush tan from a professional who will listen to your advice on shade / darkness etc. read more

Having been to a variety of Sun Tan Cities, this one is by far my favorite. This location consistently changes their light bulbs in all of their beds, and their machines are kept up-to-date. They also have plenty of staff working so that you are in and out very quickly, which is something I really appreciate, especially when comparing this location to other locations. Why not five stars? This location definitely tries to push their products or promotions, a little more than other locations, but the staff are typically nice and realize when you are really not interested. Definitely check this Sun Tan City out, especially if you are trying to tan on the run! read more

I've never ran into any issues with the Portland STC, besides an extreme under-quote on wait times here and there. It happens. I've done sales, and managed for this company, so I understand the pressures of selling lotions. I don't think this should effect ratings-it's not fun to push product for either side. They always try to sell to me, although I try to stick with the Waterville location for purchases as I know the staff there well. The beds/rooms/bathrooms and salon in general is one of the cleanest I've encountered. Not the usual hand marks on the beds, lotions on the walls that seem to be a staple in other salons. They always seem well-staffed, too. read more

Being an original Biddeford Sun Tan City customer, I was pleasantly surprised with the Portland Sun Tan City location. Luckily, being that I live in Portland, I am planning to make this Sun Tan City the only one I go to! First, I feel that this Sun Tan City is always appropriately staffed. When I have come in and it is busy, there is usually at least 2-3 employees on the computers registering and singing in guests. Then when it's a little bit slower, they still have appropriate staff members to assist with cleaning the beds, organizing stuff and doing the laundry. So great job, Portland Sun Tan City! Also, all the staff is extremely friendly and helpful and they all seem to work really well together which is great to see. I thought the beds where the same everywhere..... but I was wrong! The beds here are amazing. I have the fastest membership and for some reasons the beds in Biddeford are different than the ones in Portland. The Biddeford fastest beds have an open face with these reflectors that I think are used to tan your face. However, the Portland beds have a covered face with some great bulbs to help get your face nice and tan! For some reason, I feel that I get a better tan in the Portland beds. Regardless, Sun Tan City is by far the best tanning option that I've ever had ANYWHERE. But if you looking for an EVEN better experience, I highly recommend coming to the location in Portland on Forest Ave. read more

No! It took me 6 months of phone calls and literal "screaming" for my credit card to stop being charged long after my contract ended and I had cancelled. This is certainly a reflection upon the franchiser not necessarily the franchisee-that being said the attendants at the Forest Ave location were always kind and helpful. read more

All this shop cares about is money. Tried tanning for a trip and all they did was to try and up sale me. They tried to charge me extra for upgrades which I did not ask for as well. I asked to start very low (6 minutes) and was put in for 12. NO apology, no advise on what to do for the burn I will get. And to top it off when I asked to cancel the membership due to not being able to tan due to burn they said no. Don't visit this shop. Would not give me phone number to contact corporate and was very rude. read more

This place definitely has that corporate feel about it, but without all the seriousness, as the front desk staff are really young, immature and came off as unprofessional. That said, they were nice, but it's about what you'd expect from a place like this.. I didn't have high hopes, but I waited until last minute and HAD to get an instant tan for a corporate event. This was my first experience in an automated spray tan booth! I've only had airbrush tans before done by a person. The "posing" in there was a little funny. When I got out, I thought my skin had kind of a funky color going on. I think the bronzer color is just different? but as the day went on, I noticed it was getting darker. The following day, I showered and my tan looked a little spotty and uneven. Almost like it was missed in spots from my awkward posing. It was fine for my event, but about 2-3 days later when it began fading, it came off in these large, blotchy patches!! It was then painfully obvious that it was definitely a SPRAY tan and NOT a real one! Luckily I was able to scrub it all off. This place is probably fine if you do traditional tanning, but I wouldn't recommend the spray tanning, as it didn't last and seems really cheap. But again, you get what you pay for! read more

Bad news. I went for the first time today because it said 8 AM to 8 PM online ... I got here at 1120. and the door said "late opening today. 11:30" ... so I sat in my truck and waited 10 minutes. But at 1130, the door was locked. The gal behind the counter said "closed until 230"... no notice ...I have wasted time... this is a poorly run organization. beware! I just went to tan (not aware of the on line check in policy) and was rudely greeted outside by an obviously untrained employee with an "DID YOU READ ALL THE SIGNS!". I had read all the large print signs about face masks (which I had on) since it is easily seen....however on another piece of paper, with very small print, a paragraph is written about appts and on line check in. So fine, I went back to my car to check in and I hear the same annoyed, extremely unprofessional tone being used on another client. Then she started saying how "stupid people are and that they can't even read" and how "she could have 8 big signs outside saying STOP and everyone would just walk right in, cause they're all illiterate." I opened my door to let her know that I heard everything she just said and that I don't appreciate being talked about like that and that she should not be talking about any clients like that. She did not even attempt to apologize, she said she was talking about people "yesterday"!?!?! I don't care what, when or where, without us stupid, illiterate clients SHE would not have a job. Sun Tan City obviously needs to train their employees on customer service skills, cause they are severely lacking!!!! Also, what if I couldn't read!?!? Hey Sun Tan City, how about a BIG sign saying "On line check in and Appts Only!" so everyone can clearly see it. Also, not having rude people standing outside questioning if we can read and just simply asking "did you check in on line or make an appt?". Also, that same employee was standing directly outside the entry door, talking with another women who was smoking. That also is just very rude to expect your clients to walk through cigarette smoke and then have to stand there in cigarette smoke to read multiple small print signs. I will not be back. read more

Well I have not visited this location too many times but I must say that All their employees are very sweet, kind and alawys willing to help in any way that they can. They truly make you feel like part of their (Cun Tan City) that I'm truly considering to sticking to going there for all my tanning needs. The staff are just excellent and very kind emploees, Who to really care about their quests. I do recommend everyone and anyone wanting a trusted pace to tan and also be able to feel very acceptable wanted and warm by all staff so therefore there's no judgement whatsoever, And I wil most definitely continue to do and dress up my tendon needs with my Sun City. I love Sun Tan City and I love tanning and getting that vitamin D. I am very frustrated at my latest encounter with the customer service team at Sun Tan City. Pre-Covid in 2020, I purchased the Birthday Bash package allowing me to tan for the rest of the year. When the pandemic hit, I was unable to tan. I then had to quarantine and no longer wanted to tan. After realizing I had used the Birthday Bash membership maybr 4 times since I purchased it, I contacted Sun Tan City to see if a refund could be issued for reasons being the pandemic and inability to use membership. On December 19, 2020 I messaged with someone named Janet on Sun Tan Citys app, and after a bit of messaging, she responded and said "I have now processed this for refund. You will receive notification within 7-14 business days." You can imagine my excitement. A company supporting there customers during a time of need. A pandemic. At least thats what I thought. It is now January 7, 2021and I still hadnt heard back so I reached out on the messages through the app again. Today I was messaging with someone named Ashley. When I asked Ashley about my refund that was supposed to be processed last month, she said that the refund was denied. I never received any notification of this being denied. I am shocked and dissapointed with her answer, so I try to explain further what I had explained to Janet previously. The best Ashley was able to do was take my phone number and submit a ticket to go over why I was not notified of the refund denial. I had been tanning at Sun Tan City for many years pre-covid, and now I am sure they will not have my business post-covid. read more

As soon as we talked in we got a super bad vibe from the lady's working. Not friendly and gave rude looks. Jacked up the prices from what we saw online and from friends reviews. Drove an hour to get a tan for prom and the both the oompah loompah were bitches so we left and found a better place. Wouldn't recommend. read more

I have had to call a total of 10 times to obtain a refund that I still have yet to receive. Sales rep at the desk advised me of a prepaid amount that was incorrect causing my debit card to be charged twice. In addition the sales rep told me that my contract was risk-free and I could cancel it anytime, as I had advised her that I only wanted a single visit because as a mother of three young children I can never be too sure that I won't have an emergency financial situation, only to find out that I cannot in fact cancel for a total of six months. I was reassured a total of three times that I would have nothing to worry about and I was only receiving a reduced price for as long as I wanted to continue my contract. This is quite possibly the most Shady business experience I have ever had in my adult life. It's a shame because the beds are fantastic, but absolutely not worth the trouble. read more

Just signed up as a new customer. Your first tan is $4 but they only let you go in for 1/2 the max time which isn't the greatest, but understandable if it's federal regulations. The place is nice and clean and the beds are above average. I gave this place three stars because of the customer service. The "director" of this facility was nice but slightly judgmental. I understand it's a business and you want to sell me your overpriced lotion, but I was kindly not interested. You don't need to bash the lotion I bought online. I'm an adult. The girls at the front desk are very unprofessional. They are always complaining within customer earshot, drinking coffee and soda and this past time I was there one girl was chomping on gum. On the plus side, this is a very clean place to tan. The beds are clean and sanitary. And I do get a nice tan. If the customer service was raised this would be a five star establishment. read more

Stay far far away. My 17 year old daughter was misinformed about an expensive membership. Manager apologized and told her to leave and call corporate for a refund . When I refused to buy all the ridiculous add-ons for the spray tan (cream to put on before you spray tan to "even you out", cream to put on after you spray tan to "seal your tan", moisturizing sprays, etc., etc.) I was told: "And since you didn't buy the pre-tan cream I'm going to put a note in the system that says if you have any problems it's because of that." I had been going here for at least 8 years for spray tans. The tanning experience itself is fine, but the staff is not. You will either get someone who doesn't know what they're talking about, or someone who is rude. I purchased a "bundle" of two spray tans, and the teenager behind the counter told me the second spray tan would remain on my account and confirmed it would not expire. Three months later I went in to get my second tan and they told me it expired after 60 days. They didn't believe me when I explained how the girl helping me told me it wouldn't expire, and the "manager" essentially called me a liar by saying "I know she didn't say that because I trained her myself." Horrible customer service. I tried explaining that I get tans so infrequently that I never would have purchased the bundle knowing it expired after 60 days, and I specifically asked her if it expired and she said no. I won't be going back here due to the rudeness of employees. I've heard good things about Local Acapulco in South Portland, so I will be giving them my business from now on. read more
