Well organized and has a good selection of Asian ingredients. I love to get Koon Chun salty plums to make my own salty plum soda. They charge $5.19 for a jar and I can make a lot of salty plum sodas with it. I use two plums, brine, lemon some sugar to taste and seltzer and ice. If you dine at Vietnamese restaurants, they offer salty plum soda at $5 a pop. Koon Chun is the brand the restaurants use. They sell the plums on Amazon for $20 for two jars. Save some money and go to Chinatown. Good prices but you need to shop around. read more

This store has a fantastic variety of noodles, I found almost everything I wanted including sweet potato noodles, buckwheat noodles, and a couple of sizes of rice noodles. And it's laid out in a way that's easy enough to find stuff. It also had a variety of dried mushrooms that I've been looking for, and everything was that really good prices. I found the woman at the cash register to be very helpful, she even came out from behind the register and helped me find something and choose the mushrooms that she recommended. read more

I come here often to pick up boba pearls and tasty snacks. The store is filled with tasty treats. It's clean and organized but, it's on the smaller side compared to other stores in the area. The staff here can be hit or miss. Sometimes, they tolerate your presence and other times, they are just downright rude. This was one of the few essential businesses that were open in Chinatown during the lockdown, which was a relief to us coffeeaholics. I got my cans of Cafe Du Monde chicory coffee here, during the time when NOLA was overwhelmed by COVID19. I will return here instead of having it sent all the way from Louisiana, or making Bezos even richer by using Amazon. Yes, I drink that much cafe au lait. If you like it Vietnamese style, the longevity canned sweetened condensed milk is right beside it. Personally, I avoid sugared milk and use plain soy milk for heart health and plant based protein. Protip: brew it in a French press with a little ground cardamom, or alternately, lavender flowers. FYI: chicory is good for lowering cholesterol and blood sugar. Speaking of COVID19, the grocery immediately put up barriers and did everything the health authorities recommended, long before the city mandated this. I felt safe to shop here during that weird time when almost no one was walking around Chinatown. Is 'Sun Vin Grocery' indeed an anagram of 'nervous crying'? Well, one cold winter day, I was almost in tears after being unable to locate my favorite Ginger Milk tea at some of the hole-in-the-wall grocery stores on Mott Street. Only to find it within minutes in one of the many fluorescent-lit, relatively spacious aisles of Sun Vin, just a short walk away on Mulberry. Grocery shopping is an unpleasant chore. But Sun Vin makes up for the mundane nature of the pursuit with its colorful assortment of fruit drinks, Pocky sticks, teas, candy and gummy snacks drawn from China, Indonesia, Thailand and parts of the world where the purchasing power of the dollar is still not deserving of mockery. I even found those tea cups that I bought at the French Concession and Tianzifang in Shanghai--they are fully 20% cheaper at Sun Vin! The checkout experience is no-nonsense and quick even if not friendly. Interestingly, every item in the receipt simply reads 'Grocery'--so much for SKU data and UPC codes. Then again, I quite like the abstraction, especially when what is concealed in the line items is my shameless love for cloying candy and sugary snacks. We have a winner in Sun Vin. The whole store is stocked with these little impulse buys like Japanese Lychee Gummies, Korean Red Ginseng candy, and Philippine Tamarind-Mango candy. It's remarkable how I've never been to this grocery store, for all the years I've been to Chinatown. Then last year, bestie showed up with some frozen haw gau for me. And unlike the haw gau you get freshly made to steam, these from Vietnam had no pork in them. They were good, and tasty enough to want to keep in my freezer. Bestie, like all Chinatown locals, knew no address and could only describe it as some place on Mulberry St. I figured all Chinatown grocery stores must carry it and hunted to no avail. So after a series of miscommunications, I finally got the location correct. And remarkably, this grocery store is the only place in Chinatown where I've been able to locate them. Because when even picky mom likes something, I know I need to stock it. Sun Vin is your average grocery store, perhaps cleaner than most. It's organized, with neat aisles stocked with the usual variety of foodstuffs. They don't sell any fresh fruit outside, so the outside of the store is neat and uncluttered. I have my usual favorite grocers, so I normally come in here just to grab some frozen dim sum from the refrigerated displays, pay and go. Service here ranges from totally ignoring you to acknowledging you when you walk in. The last time I came in the cashier looked like she might have had some durian stashed behind the register and was ready to fling it at me at the slightest provocation. Why she seemed so angry, I didn't know, since she had no discourse with me or anyone else. I did know I wanted to go home in one piece to steam some haw gau so I paid and fled. Despite the chilly anger displayed by staff that one time, I'd definitely return for the frozen dim sum and might even muster up the courage to explore the aisles in more depth. For those of us who shop in Chinatown for groceries, I can honestly say this is one of my favorites. Now, I know we have choices when it comes to buying certain items, and what I know about Sun Vin is the fact that they have great selections, good prices, and the layout make sense. Need oyster sauce? Done. Want to find a bazillion varieties of ramen noodles? They are here and for about 55 cents a pack. And condiments. And rice (what a shock right? LOL). And cookies. And preserved goods. Definitely much better than Kam Man, where the groceries are more expensive an the folks who work there are not only gossipy, but have an attitude. THIS is how I like my Asian markets---cheesy fluorescent lighting, cramped aisles packed with exotic and delicious foods. And, it's reasonably priced. If you've got a hankering for pretty much ANY Asian foodstuff, you've got to go to Sun Vin. This place is around the block from me, so it makes it super simple to run down and grab eggs, butter, or other essentials. They take credit cards but a $10 minimum is required. Great selection of vinegars, sauces, marinades, and oil. Though they don't carry fresh vegetables, there's a veggie/juice shop across the street. read more

This review are for visits made prior to current COVID-19 restrictions ( PLEASE STAY HOME and SLOW THE SPREAD): I went here after watching a youtube video on some go to places in Chinatown and as someone who loves Chinatown I'm always up for going to new markets to get some authentic Asian finds. It's your basic Chinese grocery store and you can find almost anything that you would need for any authentic Chinese cooking. I got a nice jar of chili oil and jasmine tea flower and leaves and a huge bottle of soy sauce. I didn't get too many things since it was my first time but I will definitely be back to get more since I'm interested in Chinese cuisine. It's reasonably priced so don't feel like you'll empty out your wallet in this place unless you go in there with the intention of doing so. I can't wait to make a return and get some more pantry staples that are needed for Chinese cooking. I didn't have any issues with the staff they were pleasant and I wasn't followed around the store which I appreciated because it's happened to me one too many times in other stores unfortunately. They did not have ube pocky, which I have been obssessed with since I first saw it in Virginia. And nowI cannot find it anywhere. wtf. Quick and easy transactions. The staffs knows where items are located at, when you ask them. They are helpful. Can soda are still .75cent here. You wouldn't find this price any where else. A great place! My sister loves sweets. This is the greatest place for it. Not only is there sweets, there are both American and Chinese stuff. Not only food, there is also rice cookers. It is like a store full of mixed Asian candies. I go there almost every week. It is a great place for snacks, either sweet or not. The price is great. The stuff is in good quality but the price is low. It is a great place and I recommend you to go there if you are in Chinatown or Manhattan. read more

This grocery store has a nice variety of Asian delicacies and for a reasonable price. But the service isn't as good as the groceries it offers. So far, all of the cashiers and workers have been amicable and friendly but this one cashier was snobbish. She accuses her customers of lying about the wrong change. But it was her that was wrong in the first place. She was too busy talking on the phone while working at the same time. She was intractable; she incessantly claims that she gave the right change. She even slanders the customer while talking on the phone calling them 'stupid' and using the 'F' curse. When finally she realizes that she was in fact wrong, she puts the blame on the customer by saying that they're taking it too personal but it was her who started the insults. A worker shouldn't treat one's customers that way. The problem could have been easily solved if she politely looked back at her cash register history. But no, she kept verbally attacking the customers even when they were leaving the store. read more
